I did it with half watermelon one pomegranate a lemon and some orange juice powder stuff and tiny bit of sugar.. Mum said it was best drink he has ever had
In mexico we'd drink Agua Fresca with every single meal in the summer. Melon, Strawberry, Mango, Pineapple, Guava, Guanabana. The distinctive thing I noticed was that it was never very sweet. I don't think they ever added sugar. It quenches thirst much more effectively if it's not very sweet.
Whoaaaaaa! YOU CAN MAKE IT OUT OF TAMARIND?! I only know how to make chutney. My parents tell me that in Pakistan, they would take ripe Tamarinds from the trees and open them and suck them, because Pakistani ones are sour but very nice.
Incase ya didn't know, it's a joke from CesCooking (Sandra Lee) where she says to pour ~2 shots of vodka and DUMPS LOKE 1/4 OF THE FUCKING BOTTLE HOLYJESUS
I've been enjoying this for several years now and found a very good use for the leftover pulp. I mix it with a little simple syrup (I suppose just sugar might work) and froze it in popsicle moulds. The kids love them.
Tip: cut watermelon into cubes and freeze it as replacement for ice cubes because it won't melt into water and ruin the drink and the taste won't effect it
After watching this video, I've made this three time already! My whole family loves this, and I cannot get enough. I even use the white parts that aren't as sweet, and add a little extra simple syrup. I also tried using just sugar instead of simple syrup, but the sweetness tasted kind of fake, whereas the syrup enhanced the sweetness of the watermelon. I'm going to try this with mint leaves tomorrow, thank you for this video :)
I LOVE doing this with watermelon, with very little sugar. It's fantastic just as it is. To fancy it up, I make a summer punch that blows everyone's socks off. It starts with the same pureed watermelon, only without the water. Fresh mint and strips of lime zest are infused in the simple syrup, and the juice from the peeled lime is added -- that mixture can be made ahead of time and kept in the fridge. Then it's finished with club soda before serving. I leave it up to guests to spike it if they choose to, but I think it ruins it.
144, and they aren't platinum per se. Those are the steel straws places like Starbucks sold until some over caffeinated consumer stabbed the inside of their face, and they were recalled. Because "for the children", I think. In reality, the aforementioned children had likely discovered they made excellent blowgun barrels, and shortsighted parents complained... #parentsjustdontunderstand
Thank you John. I bought a bad watermelon (bad texture) from Walmart and was going to throw it away but then I remembered your recipe. This is an excellent case use for spoiled or poor quality fruits 🍉👍
i found your channel a few days ago. but to be honest, at this point i just like your videos the second i find them. the quality, the puns, the directions, the recipes... everything is great!!!
OR you could do it this way and at the end to like 2/3 juice and 1/3 carbinated water. it would make it fizzy and it would also taste like the watermelon juice :p
i made this today!! with my own variation... after i strained the watermelon i added the symple syrup and i kept it in its own container. then i pour some sparkling water in a glass with some ice and mint and add some watermelon! its so delicious
oh wow, thanks! I ran into this just when I was thinking about the giant half watermelon remaining in my fridge...I'm getting thirsty just looking at this awesomeness
I have put over ripe cantelope in the blender with orange juice and it's soooooo good. Nice frothy texture.....almost creamy. And it wasn't nearly as pulpy as you might imagine.
Yep, in fact there are versions of agua frescas with cantalope or honeydew in Mexico and Central America. They are made the exact same way, but you'd have to adjust the sugar/simple syrup to taste as those two fruits can differ widely in terms of sweetness. Enjoy!
I make my watermelon water with a splash... or a lot of vodka or tequila, and I'm mexican and I live in México and we leave all the fiber parts that gives it a lot of texture and body. I enjoyed this video, love this channel! :)
You can do this with almost any fruit! Including mango, papaya, cantaloupe. Also, you can avoid adding the sugar and reduce it in a saucepan. It should intensify the flavor without adding sugar, as well as thickening it.
This is sold at our local swapmeet as well as cantelope juice wirh chunks of original fruit. Some Mexican restaurants in town are starting to offer it now. Hope it catches on as its my favorite drink now
Cook rose syrup + water instead of sugar water. It will add a beautiful pink color/smell and everyone at the party agreed that I evolved the original recipe into crack.
Great recipe! Making simple syrup (shaking/stirring) without heat improves taste and texture of the beverage if you wanna take it a step further. Might even freeze some for watermelon “whisky” cubes Thanks!
Wish I had seen this video YESTERDAY!!!!! I had a watermelon that was very sweet but pulpy not firm. Just couldnt deal with that so I trashed it. Now I know how to deal with that almost perfect melon. Thanks Chef John!!!
This proved to me that americans really eat a lot of sugar. This is an extremely common drink in my country, but we don't use any sugar at all and it's very sweet.
Yep Americans eat a lot of sugar, Mexicans eat a lot of beans, Irish eat a lot of potatoes, English eat lots o bangers and mash, Asians eat a lot of rice, Indians eat a lot of curry, French eat a lot pastries, what's your fucking point?
i jus made this i didnt have a strainer i used a Coffee paper thing to get rid of the pulp its freaking amazing and its better if u use fruit juice it taste so much better

+asdf It's been a while, but i only recall really needing to strain Pineapple (super awful fibers) and Tamarind (pretty rough pulp)
Whoaaaaaa! YOU CAN MAKE IT OUT OF TAMARIND?! I only know how to make chutney. My parents tell me that in Pakistan, they would take ripe Tamarinds from the trees and open them and suck them, because Pakistani ones are sour but very nice.
(Meanwhile, in Canada)
I never add sugar and it tastes pretty good tho.
+Shawn Curtis ohhh Tamarindo is my favorite. Fuck...I'm homesick now
I tried it with two cups of Vodka and it was very memorable but I can't remember why.
willyb933 thanks for the idea, im gonna try this lol

this is a good tip. thx!
Watermelons are mostly water so I don't think that would work
Legit Name Yeah but if you use watermelon cubes it won't dilute the drink with bland water as when you use ice cubes.
Or just freeze some watermelon juice. Whole fruit might get soggy and tear apart.

Nice fam
i didn't realise he didn't use any lol
LMAO
He edited the scene out.
Cayenne on watermelon is actually awesome. Missed opportunity.
I'd skip the sugar myself and just add a little lime
I'm with you. I'd use honey and water but i think if you choose the right melon there would be no need
I'm with you
You need the sugar or else it won’t taste good
YES! I use lime or mint.
Or Salt

This was such a lifesaver last summer. Honeydew agua fresca was also incredible. Thanks Chef John!
I've only just found this video and I love this guys voice and diction. As refreshing as the watermelon!
My daddy loved his watermelon ice-cold and sprinkled with salt!
Wonder how this would be served in a salt-rimmed glass?
Add lime and tequila. A perfect watermelon margarita.
Tastes great with a lemon tajin rimmed glass 👍
I can't eat watermelon without salt but I need mine too be room temp or a little warmer. My teeth are toooo sensitive for ice cold melons 😖
salt salt is a must have for watermelon...

What If I used carbonated water in place of the plain water so I can make this sort of fizzy?
Quit playin' dumb, you know it would be absolutely awesome...
you blend the carbonated water you will lose all the bubbles inside
JamesWen91 you could blend the watermelons itself then mix it with the carbonated water
OR you could do it this way and at the end to like 2/3 juice and 1/3 carbinated water. it would make it fizzy and it would also taste like the watermelon juice :p
Or you could make it like in the video and then carbonate it with a 2 liter bottle and a little dry ice.
I grew up drinking all kinds of agua frescas,Strawberry,Rice (orchata),Watermelon, cantaloupe etc....this video takes me back

I add a few leaves of mint and a pinch of pink salt.
