What a lovely example Andrew, kudos to the owner for getting it back to as new and keeping it standard.....given the relative lack of performance (I gather they are about 160hp and with the synchro drivechain pretty heavy by comparison to a regular GTI) that's arguably quite a hard thing not to steer away from.
One of my kick myself moments was back in 2004 I was offered a 1 owner, nigh on immaculate German registered (still on the original German dealer plates) 1991 or 1992 Tornado Red 3 door big bumper G60, with all the unusual spec you wouldn't typically find in the UK, think it had done about 65k kms, had been lightly fettled with a reduced pulley and was making in the region of 200/210bhp. It seemed like quite alot of money at the time so I didn't buy it......I should have 😭

Had one of these for 5 years, did a stage 3 or 4 on the supercharger, really cannot remember is was so long ago. The only other thing i did to it was put on a free flowing exhaust. Thought it was pretty quick until i got spanked by an Audi TT mk 1. Did not realise how fast it really was until selling it. The buyer took it for a test drive and frightened the life out of me.... he just floored the pedal at every opportunity and it did not disappoint. Saying that i will never let a buyer test drive any car i am selling, i will do the driving. Do i miss it?.....yeah i do, wish i had kept it. By the way mine was not a Rallye, it was the 2 wheel version a bit quicker without the weight of the 4 wheel drive system.

Thanks for adding this video Andrew. Never owned the Rallye but have had 4 Mk2 G60s, including 1 Syncro which is even more rare than the Rallye but without the flared body. Found that car slow and disappointing to drive although the feeling of RWD-ness in a Mk2 while pushing hard in the twisties is something. The Mk2 you'll REALLY enjoy would be the regular FWD GTi G60. It's lighter, really fun with all the power going through the front wheels. Safety issues aside, my favourite ever car (bold statement) and I've owned lots of amazing German cars, too much to list here. Now go find a good Mk2 G60. Wait for the oil temperature to reach at least 70c then give it all it has on your favourite B-road. You'll love it! I have a primitive video on my channel of acceleration in my slightly tuned one owned for many years but sadly sold as too young to take to the US. 😥

Bought a mint one of these 7 years ago for £7,000. Still have it. 😀 Found out after it was running a stage 2 Jabba supercharger and a smaller pully. Genuine 145mph car - proved from the gearing. Remember these were designed for WRC, so 200-220bhp is easy without putting too much stress on the engine. Scary the value now!

Lovely car. "The headlamps are pretty poor in the dark" Was this the era of VWs where the headlamp current was fed through the dash switch? This led to significant losses through the wiring. My mate had an 86 Audi 80 Sport to which he'd fitted a headlight relay pack - made a massive difference in light output.

  • @joncooke479

Lovely to see another one restored, they are slow in standard form a few tweaks to the engine and suspension and they drive like they are on rails with the four wheel drive working as it should. Never a quick car however the power is usable all the way through the rev range not taking it past 6k in any gear as the supercharger is not a high reving unit but if maintained correctly it will never let you down .I've owned mine for over twenty years and has never let me down, parts are pricey and a nightmare to get hold of. Bash the panel work up and you will wish that you hadn't.!!

Brilliant! I was hoping you would have a video of this car when I saw the photos on your twitter page the other day!
I remember when peoe used to be quite adamant that these were a normal mk2 gti with a bodykit and Jetta lamps added by the owner 🤣🤣.
These were the ultimate mk2 for many people and back when there were dedicated companies set up who used to import them from mainland europe they were very much the must have mk2, sadly quite a few were overly modified I recall for performance, which just detracts from the whole point of these cars, they are special and are best left standard for me at least.
Is there to be a video of the Brian Laban car too please Andrew? I know he held that car in very high regard and it now looks amazing now its fully restored, I love mk1 and mk2 golfs and I trust they were well received at the gathering you attended there? 👍👍

My Wife is about to change her Up! Beats TSi & hoping to test drive an Up! GTi - although the 5dr version seems to have vanished from the VW website configurator...

Didn’t know this existed. Obviously never sold in the US or imported. It could be now as its way beyond the 25 year mark. So, this is almost like the Golf R decades earlier. Not a hot GTI, but a top shelf performance Golf, but even more limited and expensive in its day. I would love a Mk2 GTI but they are rare here in good condition, nothing like the abundance that Europe has.

Looks immaculate, credit to the owner to do such a thorough restoration,
Question I've often wondered with the Rallye, it looks like a CE2 car with the hazard switch on the column but then it uses the single digit CE1 style cluster, I know it was made right on the changeover years but was it a mix of the two or something different?

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  4 роки тому +1

Geek alert! OK so early Mk2s had the hazard in the switches on the dash, not steering wheel cowling, was this 1990 MY. And early cars had the overheat light in coolant gauge, later ones had it in the array of bulbs.
So this car has later hazard switch but earlier cluster. Was this clearly defined in standard Mk2 Golf production, ie did you get them together or not at all? The first Rallyes were on an F reg so were definitely 1989 model. G reg can be 89 or 90 but James' car is a 1990. I reckon they just fitted CE1 until they ran out.

It's the four wheel drive that adds the weight. If you have 250bhp at the flywheel you loose a minimum of 80 horses through the transmission so dear Brian at Jabba sport confirmed when we dyno'd it many moons ago

Never known why when people love their hobbies so much why they get all coy over the costs.......people like me are interested in costs vs the work done. All well and good ssying your big hiuse extension was delayed 3 years.....huh? Lets stick to cars. Just say it was 50k 75k etc....

Sorry about that, it was windy which I presume was the issue for your during the interview, the rest was OK wasn't it? It's hard to prevent wind noise especially in interview situations, it actually took 3 goes to park in area that was sheltered and sadly we drifted away from the building. Getting us together has proven tricky and not doing it because it's windy would have mean't no package at all. If it's because of the face coverings, can't do much about that.
