I’ve worked as a main dealer tech with VW & Audi since 1997. The Rallye was rare even then, in fact I only worked on 1… it was during a time when VW & Audi were making really special things, G40 Polo’s, Audi/Porsche RS2’s, Mk3 Golf colour concept GTI’s, harlequin’s & The Corrado, the list is almost endless & I’m glad I started my career when I did… nothing is special anymore, modern cars are soulless with no character… love your videos Jonny, thank you 😊
I ran a Polo G40 for about 4 years, 35 miles each way to work. Great little car, quick and economical, although the brakes could be a bit iffy in the wet.
Love it. My only comment would be to correct you on the Golf Limited (sorry!) The 16v G60 Limited was the most powerful VW made up until the R32, there were 71, and most went to vw personnel. Built on 5 door body shells they were all black I believe, ran small bumpers and had signature blue stripe on the grille (and an offset VW Motorsport emblem)
Epic find, Jonny. Always loved Rallye Golfs. I think the red Mk2 you showed (pictured at your show) is a regular G60. The G60 Limited was a bit of a sleeper: five-door shell, small bumpers, single headlight grille with a black VW roundel and a nice little Volkswagen Motorsport badge with matching pinstripe. I believe the earlier ones were finished in metallic graphite grey and the later ones in metallic black. I seem to recall they with came with BBS RM split-rims. Last time I saw one for sale it was going for about £60,000. A lot of money but worth it IMO.
That’s awesome, looks to be in rather good nick too, interior looks almost brand new. The German temporary plates expired in 2001 (06/07/01 to be exact as the plates say), so it must’ve basically sat for 20 years. Coincidentally I think 2001 was the last time those wheels looked cool!
I was at ( the now long gone ) McMillans VW in Bolton doing my work experience from school when the first G60,s came through and one of the sales lads took me out. I was 15 and it is ingrained as a very good day in my crazy car life. Another brilliant film Johnathan thank you for the memories pal xx
Definitely a bonus! I had 2x 4WD Mk2 Syncros in the 90s, converted one with an 8v GTI engine and 1 with a 16v GTI engine... then I spent my house deposit on a Mk3 VR6 2.9 Syncro.... Now I run around in a Mk5 TDi 4Motion, so my 4th 4WD Golf... love em :)
I remember seeing these back in the early 2000’s when I started getting into cars, and I wanted one so much! Love the blown arches, and the supercharged engine. It’d be a real pocket rocket now, not quick by todays standards, but still offering that “analogue” driving experience
Note to self Jonny, take tools and a full car cleaning kit on your future barn finds, you mentioned a beetle in a field ! I'd forgotten about that video I watched yesterday 🤣
Jonny, great channel and I look forward to each instalment. Just to help you with your Mk2 Golf nomenclature: “Golf G60” (LHD FWD, not officially imported to the UK, and the red car you had at your event), “Golf Rallye” (as depicted in your video, it’s not a G60 Rallye), and finally the “Golf G60 Limited” (5 door shell, synchro, all Schwartz metallic, LHD, 70 built, 16v G60 motor). I hope I recall the details after a 30 year hiatus.
Had a Mark 2 Golf GTI in Tornado Red from new in 1986 (replaced a Polar White Astra GTE that was written off). Absolutely loved it - it just felt so solid and so much feedback driving it compared to the Astra. Sold it to my brother in law after a couple of years and got a new 205Gti. That rattled more after just 4 weeks than the Golf ever did. One car that I wished I could have kept - happy memories. Loved the G60 Rallye at the time but financial circumstances meant it was way out of my league. Think that the grey really suits the muscular shape of the car. Just a shame about the wheels...... Keep on doing what you're doing Jonny - these finds are getting even more incredible. Best channel on You Tube.
Johnny there’s a clear need here for Late brake/S&S branded car covers. Sell them for merch and bring them on carchaeology trips and give them to those in need. You’ll extend the life of so many deserving motors!
I had a normal G60 in the mid 90's, probably the best car I've ever owned and still regret selling in favour of a VR6, but hey when your 25 you need newer hotter faster wheels all the time
Love it. I have a bare engine block for one of these in my garage along with a Corrado G60 project I’ve been slowly restoring. Rebuilt the engine and the G-Lader myself. Hopefully see the road next summer.
Had one of these in the early 2000s for 4 years as my daily. Loved it. It was a money pit and sucked up all my wages but enjoyed every minute of owning it. The only car I’ve ever regretted selling too. Long live the G60 Rallye. 🫡
What a shame it’s just been shat on wasting away instead of restored and admired by someone like me who bloody loves the mk2 particularly and the G60 even more 😍😁👌🏼

G60, I never got around to owning one, but I had 3 X 92 polo g40s and an 89 g40, all bought crashed, in my french department (46) at one point I owned all but 2 they ever sold there. The handling was erratic, huge lift off understeer mixed with the odd bit of snap oversteer as the chassis was too flexible. I fitted 6 point cages and strut tie bars to mine to solve the issue. Huge fun.
