  • Our version of The Beach Boys classic "Shut Down". Its a car race between a '63 fuel injected Corvette Stingray, and a '62 Dodge Dart with a 413ci engine. While the Dodge takes off with raw horsepower, the lighter Stingray adjusts and catches the Dart at the end. Classic American Tradition, Auto Racing!!!

    Enjoyed the photos. Reminds me when we would go to the strip on Saturdays and buy pit passes so we could see Don Garlits, Tommy Ivo and all the funny cars. I loved to smell the nitro and feel the exhaust flames against our legs as the drivers got ready for another round of elimination. At that time they were just breaking the 200 mph barrier on the quarter mile.

      The jokes on you. $4,500 in 1963 requires $65,000 now. The cars then were not burdened with expensive unnecessary safety equipment and were cheaper to build.

    I like the Beach Boys song but it's a myth and only Chevrolet wishful thinking. I out dragged a 427 Chevelle with the 300 while I had it out on a test drive. The 413 suffered no power loss at top end, it just keeps pulling harder until it hits redline at top end.

    Horsepower = torque x RPM. Actually , the Stingray makes up for the Dodge's superior displacement and horsepower difference by developing more torque because the fuel injected engine can obtain higher RPM. That is why there is the reference that the Dodge's carburetors are "starting to drink". The Dodge has reached it\s RPM limit , while the Sting Ray can crank up RPM. The race strategy is to defeat the Dodge's big torque lower RPM by using the Stingray's smaller torque but higher RPM. This is why the Stingray is going to "tach it up". RPM on an engine is measured by the tachometer, and to "tach it up" means to push the engine to higher RPM.
    Once that is understood, the song makes sense. This is why the Stingray driver has his "pedal to the floor". It's also why the Stingray breaks traction (my Stingray is wide , my slicks are startin' to spin) so he has to back off the clutch to regain traction while holding the high RPM, which in turn is why his clutch's pressure plate is burning.

      More torque then a max wedge 413, I see they must of legalized LSD and mushrooms where you live. A small block factory car will never out torque a big block no matter who makes it and I don't care if you turn it 10,000 R.P.M. At least a 100 ft. pounds of torque difference at half the R.P.M.

      Brett Denise Gibbs I had a 66GTO 389 3 dueces and a four speed, pretty hot, but no HEMI slayer, later I had a 68 Vette convertible 425horse 427 with a four speed, probably quicker than the Pontiac, but not a HEMI slayer either, on a good day with a good holeshot , maybe, but nothing launched like a HEMI Cuda, I had a 454 half ton pickup, no traction on take off but really fun to burn the rubber off of. When I had the GTO a buddy had a Challenger 4406pak pistol grip four speed and we were about even. Then there were the bikes which where faster than the Mopar legends, H1 500 triple two stroke for the 1/8 mile, and I had a kz1000 z1r that beat the 500 in the 1/4, and topped out over 160. The long background was to show basis for the admiration of the Elephant motor , back in 05 I bought a brand new Rumble Bee with a Hemi, still have it and still love it, but it is NOT like the old one, but it would still take out Corvettes around the same year as it, MOPAR just can't leave them alone, always have something a little faster.

    • @Colt-tf6xf
      @Colt-tf6xf 4 роки тому

      Brett Denise Gibbs one more little story. A coal stripper back home wanted a pickup to best a local business man that had a HEMI in a 68 Dodge 1/2 ton, a real beast, so he went to the GMC store to order one and it was supposed to be a 396. He got killed in a small plane and they were sort of stuck with it, but the Big down payment he had made gave them ability to discount it quite a bit and my uncle bought it. I never knew for sure what it was but it would beat any 396SS Chevelle that came around. It had 2 four barrels and a four speed, and I suspect it was a 427 at least, and only got 4-5 miles to the gallon and my cousin was 16 or 17 and the pickup had to go. It likely would have beat the 68HEMI pickup

    • @Colt-tf6xf
      @Colt-tf6xf 4 роки тому

      Brett Denise Gibbs probably the main thing that bugs me about corvettes is that GM would not allow Pontiac to pursue all of their potential performance because they likely would have exceeded the flagship sport platform of Chevy. Chrysler had no limitations and did so. The government bailout of GM was a mistake to say the least, had they been allowed to go broke the UAW likely would have lost their stranglehold on the industry and all of the divisions could have rose up from the ashes as separate manufacturers with new negotiated labor contracts instead of dumping Pontiac, Olds, and Saturn and Volvo and Opel. Now, GM is on strike and nobody is going to win. They really never paid back the bailout, merely supplied the govt with way overpriced Suburban and Tahoes and pickups at double the realistic price and we got screwed big time.I guess I feel like a rape victim in prison, you know they're gonna do it again.

      @@brettdenisegibbs6533 not envy, more disappointment. The time and money they've poured into R&D should have resulted in a much better car than what is offered, which comes back around to the bailout money, if GM wasn't so top heavy and had better management it wouldn't cost so much. The real reason for the corvette reference goes back two years, the song by thr Beach Boys. My wife needed/wanted a new car, didn't even consider anything GM. She picked a Wrangler Sahara and she loves it. I like it pretty good too, ride handling, looks real cool. We live on a mountain, perfect buggy. Gotta go to bed 🛌

      Both were great engines,the early 413 was prone to overheating,I remember crews throwing bags of ice on top of the motor between drags,the SBC didn't suffer those inherent problems and you could beat on them all day ..no problem

      @@brettdenisegibbs6533 here's a philosophical reply to the Corvette existence. GM is an overseer corporate management company that headed half a dozen or more auto manufacturers that were in constant competition with each other and all other car companies for a market share. To be the most popular was an ongoing struggle that GM kept swatting down ie; Pontiac had it for a while, then Olds, then Chevy, then GMC got Pontiac v8s in their pickups and on and on, GM never let anyone make something that would outshine the Corvette, Olds an Pontiac both had v8 two seaters in the 50s, but GM merely stole the innovation and gave them to Chevy. Even Ford figured out that putting a bigger motor and more carburetors would sell more tbirds, then Macnamara came along and put a back seat in it and ruined it. No Corvette SS. When you look at the current big picture of how much tax money has been plowed into GM to keep it afloat, dumping Pontiac, Oldsheimers,Saturn but keeping the corvette, hanging Cadillac nameplates on it and trying to mass-produce an exotic car that the masses not only can't afford, but will likely never generate enough revenue to justify the R&D that went into it is certainly a wasteful slap in the face to American taxpayers, why can't we get one and write it off?

      Brett Denise Gibbs I really have to go to bed, but I was referring to comparing the corvette as a world class car like Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghini, Ferrari, even Porches, but Chevy comes up pretty short. Even now with composite framework their v8 is a pushrod alongside some fairly elaborate valve trains, and our masses can't afford them anymore. Back in the sixties a new one could be had for around $4000.00 or so, now, it is out of reach, and still half or a third of the cost of Bugatti. Been fun hanging around with you again, have a good night

      @@brettdenisegibbs6533 thanks for the "good guy" reference, I really try to be good, I believe we may have been at disagreement before and parted affable then too. For me, two words sum up my opinions on MOPAR, and they are "Hemi Denny". Back in the old days, 70s, there was a guy that trolled the Cadet drive in restaurant in Kittanning PA with a Hemi GTX, two four barrels. I went down in a 66 389 3x2 4speed GTO, and informally got smoked. Hemi Denny was the man. A few rears later I went down in a 68 427 4 speed convertible , only one four barrel, and Denny did it again. That's the baseline I have for my opinions. Never had an L88, but hardly anyone else did either, Andy Africa in Clarion PA had a 65 425horse 396 vette, but he really never beat on it much and it might have been the BigDog around home but the value was out of sight early on so we never knew. The old Beach Boy song about the 413 pretty much cemented the status quoe on MOPARvsCorvette forever, they always had something faster, and more often than not it was Hemi powered, however they had 6pack 340s that in race tune could whoopass a 426. In 1978 the fastest production vehicle in America was the "Little Red Wagon" Dodge pickup thanks to pollution standards. The SRT10 pickup with the aluminum v10 came out a few years later and could break the 200mph barrier twenty years before the production Corvette could, and even now their claim is still in dispute as to whether or not a production model has the ability to do so. I had a Corvette, liked it, don't miss it much and don't want another one, they cost too much are just about as useless as titts on a boar hog. A kid working at a gas station cannot afford the payments on one today without selling a shitload of crack on the side like they could have in the 60s.I have a Rumble Bee now, I like it. If "Hemi Denny" is still around, he'd still smoke my ass, but if a Corvette comes around that's not an old big block, he probably won't like my pickup. Have a good day Brett!😉 btw, in traffic out and about when someone hammers by in a Hellcat or whatever MOPAR, they can really make a racket and disappear, there was a helicopter cop chase in Texas recently where the guy got away from the kopperchoppers and the news choppers on TV, he was good, white Challenger I believe. Just to throw you a bone, Hennessey and others have made some very fast Chevy stuff, but they also made faster Vipers....
