As a Nintendo and Super Nintendo fan at the time, I was envious of these Sega games that pushed boundaries a bit, with the apex being Toejam and Earl. Great video, thank you sir.
Kid Chameleon is memorable especially because despite being a relatively minor title it was distinguished with its own comic strip in the UK Egmont-Fleetway "Sonic the Comic". Alongside Decap Attack it was perhaps the most obscure title STC picked up. I wrote a follow-up for STC Online years ago and several pages were drawn but editorial decided to scrap it.
Kid chameleon surprises me. It's not that well known and didn't sell well. But when I was a kid, I remember seeing commercials for it all the time. On TV and in gaming magazines. They also had it playing at the Genesis kiosks at toys r us and Sears.
Great video and they were a loss to the Saturn, it still baffles me why very few Megadrive games came forward to the Saturn in any capacity especially Streets of Rage. As for Sonic, I always felt that the stage in Sonic Jam was actually a good starting point for building a 3D Sonic game for the system. Just imagining a world where the Saturn sold better and thinking what Sega Technical Institute, Sonic Team, Am2 and Team Andromeda could have come up with. Such a missed opportunity

Starting to think I'm the only person that loved Spinball. I thought it's music was fantastic, if a bit repetitive. Gameplay hasn't held up, but I loved exploring it's section-based boards. Plus that robo snake in the ball pit always ignited my imagination.
I didnt discover it until I got one of the small Atgames "single toast-belt buckle" systems, I had to get that cartridge and enjoy the game. It's an amazing game with a dark, but funny story.
Great video! I started at STI as an environment and character artist just as they were starting work on Kid Chameleon. It was a great place to work and a group of very talented people… until it wasn’t. After the teams split things got weird. STI had several games that, had they been able to finish them, could have gone on to be A+ titles; ie Kinetic/Jester, Astropede, Spinny & Spike. By the time I left in 1995 the writing was on the wall that STI’s future was seriously in doubt. (And it was definitely no longer an enjoyable place to work) I have no idea why Green Dog is said to have been done by STI?!?! I have NO memory of it and I was at STI from 1990-1995.
Great episode, Lord X! It was amazing to remember those titles with this new perspective you gave me. Yeah... I can only imagine all the great titles they could’ve done if the teams were better handled. Really a business issue. Thank you!!

You know, it's funny. But seriously, I know some people don't like Kid Chameleon or Sonic Spinball but they were and still are some of my favorite games on the system with Chameleon being one of the first games I played on the Genesis when we would rent it (yep, renting consoles was a thing for the younger audience). By the way X did you see the little 12 minute vid from the guys putting together “Streets of Rage 4” with the interview of Yuzo Koshiro and how he approached the music he created for the game based upon his influences and experiences creating the music for Streets of Rage 2? If not I highly recommend to watch it ASAP! It’s amazing.
Something I always wondered with Dick Tracy for the Genesis. In the instructions, it says "The Kidd" can be found, and he can give you more health during the game. Problem is, he isn't in the game. Possibly the developers removed him or he was never finished? Is he in the Master System version?
As kids me & my cousin would just leave the Sega on if there was no way to save or use passwords, It would get a lil warm but it never seemed to do anything harmful to the system, there was NO WAY we were gonna jus throwaway all those HOURS we put in!!! Same with the PlayStation, broke kids didnt have memory cards lol
Due hard arcade was funny Especially that part you run into the bathroom and u see a guy in front of the urinal bouncing up and down like he’s dancing and peeing at the same time
Thank you SEGA Lord X for all of these wonderful sugestions, because now I have cool game to spend my time and keep the good work, because I like so much your work👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Sonic Xtreme being canceled really bummed me out as a kid, that was the game that made me want a Sega Saturn. I used to look at articles about it all the time in game magazines.
I feel like Sonic Spinball had a lot of potential, and could have made a solid spin-off series for Sonic. If it wasn't rushed in 3 months, it could have had more levels and more fluid gameplay. If you turn the game speed on in options to fast, it actually makes it a bit better. This should have been the default speed.
I really like Sonic Spinball, also folks forget it launched at $30. I"m so glad Sonic 3 wasn't isometric, I never was very good at those kind of games :). Also I don't think Jackson's legal problems were the issue, he didn't like the Genesis' sound chip.
I think it's much more of a reason that he was in court defending himself against child abuse allegations. Bad PR. But I guess people will always choose the explanation they prefer lol.
Great video, as always. As for your comment re: why Sega never gave a Die Hard-style treatment to the SOR series... actually they did. Kinda. As you may know, Core Design began development of a 3D game which was to become the 4th SOR, but Sega declined. That project continued nevertheless & eventually became the PS1 brawler "Fighting Force". A game which, in my opinion, shares many of the same elements as Die Hard Arcade.
Sonic X-Treme is a game that makes me dream. More like a fever dream. Granted, if it actually went out, i bet it wouldn't be as memorable as it is from those strange concept video. After all, the concept is a bit like Bugs but with a better physical engine and presentation... And a funky camera. ... But i have a weird obsession with "how developpers tried to make 3D plateformer before Mario 64 came out" and Sonic X-treme is like a window to a world that will never be.
I have heard that Die Hard Arcade was allegedly meant to be a new Streets of Rage game before transforming into Die Hard Arcade. I am unsure how true that is though.
@@Kokomadeta In the west Sega got the Die Hard license to sell the game better. I think that the game that was intended to be a new Street's of Rage game was Fighting Force but Sega rejected the idea and it ended being a PSX and N64 release, without a Saturn version.
I don't know how much I like Green dog...i like what they were trying to do art wise. It would have looked great on 32x. I mean bas long as it handled backgrounds. so many of STI games ooze of potential.
Hell, I'm one of those ppl that really liked Sonic Spinball growing up! I even thought the soundtrack was baddass! I especially loved the Boss theme, which was one of my favorite tracks for the entire system! Yeah, I know the game gets a lot of hate, and I'm not in love with it or anything, but I liked it a lot when I was younger. Hell, I even owned the Game Gear version of the game and played the hell out of that one too on car trips and such! Haven't played it since, but I see no reason to believe that my love for it has changed. I also don't really see how the gameplay is repetitive, considering each Pinball board is completely unique and has extremely unique ways to get through each one. It's deeper than your average Pinball game where you just bounce the ball around for points, it plays more like an adventure game with Pinball mechanics as you actually have to venture through the robust and large courses. It's got a lot more going for it than an average Pinball game does for sure, and is quite rewarding each time you are able to make it to a Chaos Emerald. It feels pretty darn unique to me & deserves more love imo.
I think Comix Zone can be played and beaten without alot of mandatory damage but it does take a few playthroughs to learn the level design. There are bombs that can be torn from the wall from your rat, and item planning and seeking the best route is strongly encouraged. At first it seems like that but with time I was able to avoid alot of damage that at first seemed mandatory, very tough game, and the only Gems soundtrack that is fantastic imo.

I love all your videos and views. You ever considered trying to do a sega channel type of episode?
I didn't know about Sonic pinball, I had Dragons Fury, that was a really good pinball game.
Dragons Fury is the best video game pinball ever.
Love your content man SEGA boys forever
Something I always wondered with Dick Tracy for the Genesis. In the instructions, it says "The Kidd" can be found, and he can give you more health during the game. Problem is, he isn't in the game. Possibly the developers removed him or he was never finished? Is he in the Master System version?
Another excellent video as always but man, it was painful watching the Sonic 3 special stages...
Die Hard Arcade! I really wish they would re-release that one on modern systems. Wikipedia claims Japan got it on PSN, but not us.
Loved Greendog back in the 90s, it looked great in my old tube tv.
Due hard arcade was funny
Especially that part you run into the bathroom and u see a guy in front of the urinal bouncing up and down like he’s dancing and peeing at the same time
Great work Sir thank you for the great work
Thank you SEGA Lord X for all of these wonderful sugestions, because now I have cool game to spend my time and keep the good work, because I like so much your work👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
when i finally die, i hope the afterlife has a finished copy of sonic x-treme
Being able to shoot the background in Dick Tracy and playing as Knuckles in older Sonic games blew my young mind.
Sonic Xtreme being canceled really bummed me out as a kid, that was the game that made me want a Sega Saturn. I used to look at articles about it all the time in game magazines.
Awesome videos sega lord X cant wait for the next one.
4:44 Greendog is Monkey D. Luffy from 1992 before the One Piece OVA came in 1998 and Manga in 1997.
This is an awesome video, covering so many classics. I do have to mention that STI was the worst choice for a company name abbreviation though.
I wonder how "the ooze" would translate in to an FPS...
lol I know u hate greendog I don't know why I love it XD nice video as always
What is the Title of the Sonic music in the background at the begging of the video? I kinda forgot...
Just subbed!!! Keep up the good work!
That Gens emulator solved my save state problems when i was a kid. I dont even remember how i found out about emulators back in like 2004
very informative video, had no idea about most of this stuff, Cerny hasn't aged a day
i really happy with list of greatest institutes games who will be incredible for graphics
I have heard that Die Hard Arcade was allegedly meant to be a new Streets of Rage game before transforming into Die Hard Arcade. I am unsure how true that is though.
I believe this is Dynamite Cop in Japan, or maybe it's called that just in the arcade?
Yes, Dynamite Cop, I believe.
@@Kokomadeta In the west Sega got the Die Hard license to sell the game better.
I think that the game that was intended to be a new Street's of Rage game was Fighting Force but Sega rejected the idea and it ended being a PSX and N64 release, without a Saturn version.
@@Hektols Fighting Force was also pitched as an idea for a new Streets of Rage.
awesome video man!
I don't know how much I like Green dog...i like what they were trying to do art wise.
It would have looked great on 32x. I mean bas long as it handled backgrounds.
so many of STI games ooze of potential.
whaat? how can you not like GREEEN DAAAAWG?
All right a new video
As a kid, Comix Zone was interesting but frustrating due to its difficulty. Later I enjoyed it more with cheat codes.
Always wanted this video to be a thing
The way you played the blue sphere levels drove me nuts lmao
I like sonic spinball and the music :(
I love this channel
