    One of the best Christmas's of my life. 1986 me, my brother and sister opened our very own master system. We played Wonder boy and Snail Maze for weeks. Shortly after we got Double Dragon. Needless to say some of the best times of our childhood. Altered Beast, Space Harrier, Alex Kidd, California Games, Astro Warrior, After Burner and Hang on. The only game I ever saw my dad play was Hang on. I remember how impressed we were that he beat the night level. Lol. I have him and my mom to thank for all the amazing memories. Miss ya, dad.

    I'd say Asterix os the best looking game on the Master System. The character sprites are amazing for an 8-bit game, it really looks like an early 16-bit game.

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 4 роки тому +2

      Yeah the legend of zelda isn't an RPG. It's an action-adventure. It very deliberately has all the action be in real time, only has one character (so it's not really role playing) and doesn't have stuff like levelling up (unless you count getting the white Cape thing or whatever it's called that turns link white and ups his defense). Zelda is closer to a metroidvania than an RPG. That game and metroid and kid icarus coming out all at the same time were all meant to be in the same kinda vein, Nintendo's attempt to expand games from just being arcade replicas into something bigger.

      @SonofSethoitae 4 роки тому

      @@duffman18 I mean, you're not wrong about Zelda not being an RPG, but having only one character has nothing to do with whether or not a game has roleplaying.

  • @bloodykenshiro8218
    @bloodykenshiro8218 4 роки тому +2

    Hey thanks for showcasing Kenseiden!
    It's a more methodical platformer that may not be for everyone. Some of the platforming segments are frustrating because Hayato (the samurai) gets an insane amount of knockback when hit that you often can't recover from quickly enough if you are near an edge.
    Things get a lot easier when you obtain more moves for the character, as well as the HP extension and defensive charms.
    I actually prefer it without the FM sound, surprisingly enough.
    You're quite right about both Asterix games and Ninja Gaiden on the SMS (I think it plays better than NG1 and 2 on the NES and ties with 3).

    Psycho Fox was a fantastic platformer that had fun mechanics like the ability to change characters that have their own specialties and the maze minigame was cool too! Lord of the Sword was VERY tough but another great game too! I like the channel and videos but we definitely have different takes on a lot of SMS games!

    Okay...I have never played Psycho Fox in my life. However, there is something oddly familiar with it and I think I know what it is. Psycho Fox reminds me of Decap Attack for the Genesis. I actually had to stop the video for a second as it was driving me crazy. Am I right, is Psycho Fox related to Decap Attack in any way? Like maybe the programmers?

    Sega really did a LOT with their tile-scaling tricks on the Master System. Never QUITE pulled off true SuperScalar quality, but they did manage to make ports of Out-Run, Space Harrier and After Burner that were closer to good than their NES counterparts, and Hang-On was surprisingly respectable for such a limited port.

    I am so happy that your are covering SMS as it has quite a worldwide fanbase. There are many classics hope you can cover individually. I am still surprised that Phantasy Star hasn't been highlighted. It was the first console RPG that was years ahead of it's time. It was also developed by Reiko Kodama who is one of the original OGs of Sega who contributed to their early dominance.

    As a NES owner in Brazil back in the 90s, I was blown away by Shadow Dancer on the Master System. I just couldn't find a comparable game on my console and that pissed my 12 years old fanboy brain sooooo much.

    Deep Duck Trouble is a fantastic game for the Master System! That is one game that every SMS fan should play! Also, while I don't usually tend to agree with much of what RGT85 has to say, I have to admit that his suggestion of Jurassic Park for the system was great one. I happened to play that game as a kid on the Game Gear and was admittedly quite impressed! It's a very solid game and a good looking one too.

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 4 роки тому

      Yep when compared to its direct rival, the NES, the master system was so much more colourful. NES games all have a kind of desaturated look to them because the colour pallete is so limited. But master system games could look as good as 16 bit games. The batman game in particular could easily be an early mega drive game. Everything is so much more vivid and colourful. And especially when it was into the 90s, everyone had a really strong handle on how to program for the master system and it was still a hugely popular console then even though the mega drive and snes were out (in regions like Europe and South America, everyone was still playing their master systems, or had the power base converter to play them on the mega drive) and so you got all these high quality games coming out for it still. I think the master system is actually still being manufactured, it's the longest running console I believe, even though its not Sega making them anymore it's some Brazilian company.

    Finding Kenseiden and Psycho Fox hard to control and classing R-Type's sprite flicker a serious issue might make enjoying the best of the Master System's library difficult. These are A-Tier games but a little nostalgia probably goes a long way too.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  4 роки тому

      No disrespect to anyone who enjoys Kenseiden or Psycho Fox, but they certainly aren’t A tier games in my book. And to be clear, the sprite flicker in R-type is a serious issue to its merit graphically, not its overall quality.

    What got me into collecting for the Master System is that I went to the flea market and a guy sold me over 38 games for $2.50 a piece and fantasy stars and all the money game came in that collection over $2,000 worth of games. I spent almost $100 for and that's what got me into Master System.

    One nice thing to note in Kenseiden is that the sprites of the character are asymetrical, always left handed whether the character looks to the right or to the left. In 99% of the games of that time, the characters are symetrical, left handed when they look to one side and left handed when they look in the other side

      @@peristrojka sorry it turns out you're right. Others have pointed out that that particular game doesn't work properly on a lot of emulators. The actual game does have scrolling backgrounds but only in certain emulators and on original hardware. So whatever emulator Sega Lord X was using wasn't displaying it correctly.
