    Seriously can't thank you guys enough. I teared up when I heard you were teaming up with Epic to bring Megascans to us for free. Its a testament to how far humans have come when from my own room I can create photo realistic worlds from my imagination with relative ease. I always imagine what it would be like to bring this technology back a thousand years and show people what we can do now. My only hope is that I can pay my respects in the form of creative content and add to the never before seen worlds that artists are going to create. You've empowered creators and brought forth a new era of graphics design that brings professional tools and content to all of us. Thank you.

      Just remember that scans are a supplement. Its always best to be able to create your own assets, even if youre doing realism, so that you can control shape language, color, composition, etc easier.

      a thousand years?... Who needs to go back that far? Just go back TEN years and everyone will be drooling. TWENTY years and everyone will be crying. THIRTY years and their minds will start blowing.
      A thousand years they just look at you like you were a wizard and go on about their business. Or they kill you. I'd much rather go drop these renderings on the desk of Walt Disney or even George Lucas pre-Star Wars. Give it to someone who knows what they are looking at so they can full understand just how much their mind needs to be blown.
      .....Then watch it blow :D

      This is a gimmick - seriously do you think that scanning stuff that must exist in the first place will solve issues with creative artwork ? Will you scan a sci-fi lab? or hell-level for next Doom game? etc? Have you noticed that nothing there animates (even foliage)? Etc etc. The biggest real problem though is shipability of a real world product using this - amount of data is insane, it's hard to match hand made content with the scans - they look to far apart. It's funny how people don't notice that the game Epic decided to make with their tech is a low-poly stylized "runs on everything" Fortnite and NOT a ultra hyper-realistic high-end only game :) I wonder why.

    • @felixn.7397
      @felixn.7397 4 роки тому +2

      @@dexio85 Have you seen the Unreal Engine 5 Preview on Playstation 5? Realistic looking games will be possible even on mainstream consoles in just a few years. But yeah... you make more money with games like Fortnite that "run everywhere"... still the people at Epic and the ones working on UE are passionate about bringing the most realistic graphics out there. And the money from Fortnite definitely helps achieving that in combination with Quixel! :) Quixel can be used to create stylized assets from scanned assets. They even showed in this video that you can adjust the look of any asset through Quixel Mixer and a bit of creativity. By re-texturing other assets with Mixer it might be possible to better blend in traditional assets. Such high quality assets have never been available before for free, so yeah, I'm excited about this. But animation and disk space sure are really problematic though.

    • @dexio85
      @dexio85 4 роки тому +1

      @@felixn.7397 Yup. Still. Using Quixel (or any other scanned assets) limits creativity a lot. We have the hype now because there's a jump in percieved quality but those assets are basically photos + mesh. There's nothing magic about the - just TONS of data that has to be stored. My bet is that for that ind of fidelity we will have to wait for games to be distributed on "read only SDD" flash cardridges or sth. when making 500GB of fast access memory will not be a problem or we will have to update CDNs to NEXT level but that will mean that prices of games will have to account for that as well. Sorry I don't see how a tech demo will transfer into games any time soon.

    What I would really love to see is building a game playable environment that looks absolutely amazing and showing all the steps from start to finish. The 'overviews' you guys have done in the past were great, but its hard to really be able to pull it off yourself without knowing all the steps involved in the process to make sure everything is properly optimized, the right check boxes are marked in engine, the right type of lights and data is setup, etc. It sounds like that may be what's coming with the extensive breakdowns you have for the scenes you were showing. Knowing how to use the assets in engine is the most important thing! (By engine I'm referring to UE4).
    Also: YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING. I remember buying the Quixel suite 2.0 way back when I first started doing 3D design as a hobby and its super awesome to see where you guys are at now. On point exactly :) Their scans look impressive because they leaped into "borrowing" the detail level of a real world graphics. It's nothing special about that content - it's still triangles and texels but lots and lots and lots of them. So many in fact that normally it's impractical to make such a high-density meshes by hand. For making actual games this quixel tech has very limited use if any. I can't tell my artist to make by hand content that will look in similar fashion and I can't expect to have everything scanned. A lot of artwork is invented and does not exist - games happen in imaginary places. Also my characters will stand out as well as using this tech for characters is inpractical in a similar fashion foliage without movement will look dead, etc. etc. And at the end of they day I can't ship a 300 GB game either + there's no such thing as "low settings" in that tech - you need a beefy machine which limits my client base.

    For a laymen, how game-changing is this for game development? Does it enable developers to spend more time on the creative/artistry side? Sorry for so many questions. I'm just trying to wrap my head around how impactful it is because it looks revolutionary.

    Something I really miss in the megascans library? Full trees! I know its really hard to scan them because of leaves and stuff but please try it. It would save me a ton of work.

    Bridge Is The program Iv'e always wanted without knowing it. To be able to import all those materials and assets and have them Automatically reconstruct in UE4 without me having to hook up all the material components again is awesome.
    And the added feature of the apply to selected object and auto place plants and foliage in the foliage painter is Genius.
    The more mixer becomes like substance painter and its ability's The more I try to learn it.
    As for requests I would love to see more.
    3d scanned Modular walls & fence types.
    Roof kits and corrugated steel panels.
    Broken down Rusty cars and military vehicle wreaks.
    More Industrial stuff, windows, broken walls modular parts, street lights.
    More Urban scans and traditional game type assets.
    Palm trees, road signs, telegraph posts, hedges, BARNS, Wooden stairs,
    Hope this fires up the imagination :)

    Thank you for everything you do!!

    Really wish the Quixel Suite 2.0 for Photoshop was still maintained. The newer tools are great and all, but sometimes you need to make a fast normalmap and it's sad that the old tools I used to rely on simply don't work anymore.

    I would like to request a content about: How do you guys prepare the texture for surface like in the ground where you are able to blend them and painted them using vertex inside Unreal Engine, the fundamentals about this, do's and don't. like you showed here the (1) Dry and (2) Wet texture. thank you hope to see this content in the near future.

    A quick question: is it possible to combine bridge/mixer with terrain from houdini? I mean, what if i have a terrain from houdini with ID maps for different regions (river, cliffs,etc) can i use those to add megascans materials to that terrain? My guess is it would work but havent tried it and im not sure of the workflow. Should i add the terrain into unreal first or into bridge and add there the materials?

    really love this team up, though I haven't been able to play much with quixel stuff yet. I focus mainly on the stylized content area. Additionally I'm stuck on forward renderer for VR so it's really hard to light scenes correctly.

    Great! The only things that are missing for me are the NDO style, custom normals workflow, and the ability to work in a flat 2d mode.
    Still having to use NDO and Photoshop.
    Other than that, mixer is awesome and is part of my workflow.
