They were getting out of dodge before all the poison kicked in our land, air, and water. Humanity in 2021 has to go back to the manual ways of doing things. My storage unit has about a 1/2" of water on the floor because of a leak in the roof from a recent hurricane. I thought of using my rigid shop vac but had a lot of questions and then I found your video. I'm literally going to start vacuuming the water out of my storage unit after I post this. Thank you very much for sharing the information.

    67 year old widow , water in basement from storm Elsa today, haven't used the shop vac in some time to remove water in basement. Thanks for the excellent video refresher course. Thumbs up. Many thanks !!!
    Actually had to run to Home Depot as the pump I had didn't work. The seasoned staff at home depot were clueless , useless as to where I would find the wet/vac water pump accessory. Needless to say one is best to use their own devices. I found it and attached it, good to go. Thanks again

      You don't need the pump unless you're sending the water up vertically (e.g., out of a basement) and you don't have a sump pump. If you have a sump pump, roll the vac to the sump pump, remove the cap at the bottom side of the vac and quickly insert a sock over the hole if you want (as a dirt filter). Gravity works great! No extra water pump needed. ~ Isa, Tiny House Northeast

    You can actually run the pump and vac at the same time which I did when my basement took on water - about as much as shown in your video. It would not work for a large amount of water or a body of water like a bathtub then as you indicate it would have to be a 2 step process.

      They make a foam filter specifically for water pickup. I'd recommend using that just in case you pick up any other junk along with water. In my experience at least, you're never sucking up perfectly clean water and a good amount of gunk gets stuck on the foam filter that may have otherwise blown through the vac motor which isn't good for it. If the pond is deep you can use a transfer pump or a sump pump till they don't pick up water anymore and then finish up with a vac. I believe it will be much faster because you won' have to stop the vac and start the pump then stop the pump and start the vac and so on and so on. Get my drift.

      Yes, But the pump may pump out the water faster that it goes in.

    does removing the filter before performing a wet vacuum risk spoiling the motor? like in case there are debris in the liquid or what not. I am currently using a Karcher wet vacuum and it seems like it is recommended to keep the filter intact for wet vacuum

    Is there any concern about letting the electrical cord sit in water while vacuuming? Thanks!

    • @HomeOwnerRepair
      @HomeOwnerRepair  6 років тому

      You should keep it out of water whenever possible

    • @YR7A
      @YR7A 6 років тому

      my best advice is to just use common sense, inspect the cord if there are punctures in the outer surface of the cord then keep it out of the water if not then just dont let the connection betweeen the extention cord (if you are using one) or the wall touch the water. does that help any?

    Is it safe to clean clogged gutter with it? Which will have leaves wet gunk and standing water. Will the gunk or leaves get into to motor If I vaccum with standard filter being removed.

    Can i use this to drain a hot tub? Can I leave the vac running with the hose inside the tub so that it's draining the tub and then simultaneously run the pump to pump the water out of the bucket. So it's collecting water and pumping it out at the same time?

    • @HomeOwnerRepair
      @HomeOwnerRepair  5 років тому

      Not sure, you might be able to use a garden hose to drain it

    I'm looking for a way to reuse (pump) water from an upstairs oversized bathtub through a window, down to my lawn and flower beds. Might this be a reasonable solution? Is there a better way?

    • @maycatyuiop
      @maycatyuiop 5 років тому

      Interesting idea! Legally you probably can't but some jurisdictions Allow it. All you would need to do is plumb the drain to your garden and possibly add a in line pump to it. Shouldn't be too hard although it may be difficult to access the drain

    • @NeverSuspects
      @NeverSuspects 5 років тому +1

      You could probably just use a hose and siphon most of the water out. With one end of the how kept lower then the other and the other end submerged in the tub pull the water from the lower drain to end by eaither using something to suck it and start the flow or just well.. sucking on it.. and once it starts to flow it will go as long as one end stays completely submerged and the other end is lower then the submerged side. gravity will do the rest..
      Just like how people used to siphon gas out of older cars tanks.

    Question: I have a wet/dry ShopVac I got from Rona. It's not a Ridgid but same style and size as yours. Just like your Ridgid, mine has a hole on the top where exhaust air blows out, but when I used it to pick up water in my basement, water was spitting out the exhaust hole as I was sucking up the water from the floor. Does anybody know what would cause this?? It wasn't full and yes I did remove the exhaust filter just like you did.

    • @HomeOwnerRepair
      @HomeOwnerRepair  7 років тому

      Not sure what would cause that. Maybe that ball wasn't sucking up all the way to block the water

      Use wet application filter

    • @christophersimpson6815
      @christophersimpson6815 6 років тому

      There is a foam filter you are suppose to use. They make them for ridgid too. I’m not sure why he didn’t use one. Also they make a clean stream filter that is excellent for all pickups and washes clean. They make them for almost every vac out there

    • @YR7A
      @YR7A 6 років тому

      generally, you are safe just make sure that the ball is not stuck to the bottom of the cage that it is housed in it. the reason that you are safe is that somehow the vacuums can work in basically any environment as long as the vac is not submerged. did i help?
