  • There are tons of acrylic paints around: different brands, different thicknesses, different selections, etc. Why is it that I use Golden Open Acrylics?

Thank you! Lol, I feel validated, living in dry Colorado. I end up getting anxious trying to go fast enough to blend, even with retarders. I can't speed paint in real life 😂
I got a bottle of OPEN Acrylic Medium, and mix it with my regular acrylics, and that works great. It gets sticky after a bit, but if I want to continue to blend, just adding a very fine mist of water gets it moving again, without watering it down. Love the stuff.

Yeah, the stickiness is what ends a fair amount of my painting sessions sooner than I'd like, but I try to plan for that.

I'm just starting and need to know what I need in Florida. Sounds like Heavy Body will be just fine. Excellent explanation and demo.

Have you tested whether or not a humidifier in a sealed room makes a difference in how your paints behave?

hi! thank you for this demonstration! i've read that the almost dried paint can be reactivated with fresh one so I was wondering if i had to wait for days (or weeks) to do my glazings over it?

I might try a few of these as I like to paint on wood. With normal Acrylics on a hot day if you do a long brush stroke the start of the stroke is dry before you reach the end, its that bad.
I might try the open with my normal acrylics for sky blending, I think that would work.

Thank you! Excellent review, very helpful. Have you tried or heard of Kroma paint? I'd be interested to know how they compare to Golden.

Hello CJ! Im trying to build a limited palette with the Golden OPEN acrylics and they don't have Cadmium Yellow Light. The nearest options are Cad. Yellow Medium and Cad. Yellow Primrose (a more pale version). Both are PY 35, single pigment. My question is, which one is better as a mixing yellow? Should I buy both? Thanks

I've been shifting over to the benzimidazolone yellows. They are close to the cads but less potentially toxic. I don't sweat the exact hues too much as mixing mitigates a lot of variations. Even so, benz yellow is good middle-of-the-road yellow. The light yellows in general are good for mixing. Personally, I mostly use medium yellows which are a useful middle ground between saturation and mixability. (For the sake of clarity for the unsure -- by mixability, I refer to a paint that can be used in convenient, i.e. not minuscule, quantities while still having a good pigment load so you can fine-tune the hue you are desiring.)

I wanted to love fluid acrylics because that's what Craola, one of my favorite acrylic artists, uses. But I couldn't work with it quickly drying out. I'm leaning towards open acrylics or water soluble oils at the moment...

He uses a lot of retarder with his acrylics though. He even has a video showing his retarder mix and how he uses it to slow the drying time and make his paintings look like oil painting.
