can you dry these faster with a hair dryer? And can you use oil painting techniques with these?
Hello Steven, in response to your questions.... Yes, you can speed things up with a hair dryer - but a regular fan might work as well (air-flow is more important than heat), better still use a mixture of OPEN with Heavy Body or Fluid color to get the optimal drying time for you. As for oil painting techniques, it all depends on which techniques you're considering. OPEN should provide a similar capability to oils for glazing, blending and some subtractive techniques, but we do not recommend using OPEN in any thick applications or techniques.

I was thinking of the Extra Heavy Gel in about 80% to Open Gel Gloss at 20% full mixed and then add the Golden Open at 10 to 20%

What is the general rule of thumb of what the time spans are for Heavy/Soft Body Acrylics and of Open Acrylics fully curing, locking in, and being absolutely dried and unmovable?
Hello Robert, time required for OPEN paintings to fully cure will vary due to several factors - making our guidance very conservative at two weeks. [see our complete application page: www.goldenpaints.com/technicalinfo/technicalinfo_open - however, that is the most general of recommendations, if you use the paint thicker than we recommend it could be much longer, if you paint thinly on an absorbent support with a lot of air flow across the surface it could be much shorter.

What is the ratio of thinner to water for misting the palette? Also, you never demonstrated using the thinner for thinning. What is the best way to get to a fluid consistency? Open thinner, water, open medium, high flow medium, glazing liquid, fluid medium, something else, or some combination of the above?
Thanks for your questions. To keep paints on your palette wet, you can mist or spray water or a blend of water and OPEN Thinner in a 3:1 ratio (3 parts water to 1 part OPEN Thinner). When using OPEN Thinner to thin down OPEN paints, we recommend using a maximum addition of 3 parts paint to 1 part Thinner. If this blend is still not fluid enough for your purposes, add a little bit of water to further thin down the paint. You can do all of that on your palette first, or, if working in larger quantities, prepare your paint blends in a sealable plastic container or jar. All the other options you mentioned can also work to thin down OPEN paints. Use OPEN Medium or OPEN Thinner, possibly with some water, to maintain the long open time of the paint blends. Adding High Flow Medium or any of the other mediums will reduce the open time, as they are regular fast drying acrylics. airbrush medium is better than water for thinning acrylics. it's skim milk consistency which is almost water thin.
Can I mix it with regular varnish and Golden Astra heavy gel matt?
We generally don’t recommend blending varnish with painting mediums and gels. However, if this particular ‘regular varnish’ is basically an acrylic medium, i.e. a permanent water-based acrylic product, it might be possible to blend it with our gels and mediums. We would recommend testing on a small scale and applying the blends onto a sacrificial surface, to see how the mixtures dry.
How long does it take for the OPEN to dry on a gel plate?
Paint residues on a gel plate can be a very thin layer, which might dry a little faster than a paint film that was applied by brush, for example. While brush stroke-thick paint layers remain wet for 1-2 hours on a non-absorbent surface, paint residues after mono printing on a gel plate can set up after maybe 15 minutes. You still have more time to clean the plate, but it’s best to wipe the gel plate with a damp cloth after about 15- 20 minutes.
just got an order of acrylic paints and they are solid. How can I make them fluid enough to use?

mixing open thinner with airbrush medium would pronably be a good way to create a really thinned but slower drying fluid acrylic with it.

What happens if you put open paints on a stay wet palette
Hello Peggy - a stay wet palette will keep OPEN paints wet, possibly too wet for some folks. Simply by having a lid, a stay wet palette can preserve your OPEN mixtures for a long time even without the addition of water. From that perspective, any shallow tray with a reasonably air-tight lid will work.
Hi, im thinking of using the gel medium, but having tried retarders and glycol to extend my drying time, being in asia with a 32 to 34 degree celcius, Im worried that it might get tacky under five minutes.
Are the open mediums just the same as retarders amd glycol, or are they composed of a different chemical?

Just use chrome oxide green and the various iron oxides - yellow, red, violet, sienna, umber. Plus cobalt blues. Those are all pretty opaque. And if you need high chroma, mix them with white or one of the above.
