Golden Open Acrylics Tutorial. How to Paint a Candle!

- Hello you amazing creatives!
My son turned 21 and to celebrate, I decided to paint a candle in honor of his birthday.
I'm using a combination of Golden Open Acrylics and a few regular acrylics to control drying time in certain areas. I'm painting on a 12x24 inch canvas that I stretched and primed with acrylic gesso.

I love OPEN acrylics !!! They are so versatile with no Fat over Lean issues, easy to use, easy to paint over, easily blended !!!

Having recently painted a hand, I relate to what you are saying about the 'struggles' - except that you are so much more talented. With every painting I realise the importance of simplicity and minimalism - many a times we try to make it profound. This came out so well!
I find lips to be really tough … I think it’s the toughest part of the face …. You are OUTSTANDING!!! Truly exceptional!!!love your work , love your videos!!!!!!
I agree totally!!! Lips are challenging. There's really no definitive lines. They have this subtle, slow gradient to them.

It was hot and sticky for a few days here too. Today was cool, smoky from the wildfires, and rainy. We have had a LOT of rain in my neck of the woods in the last 2-1/2 weeks or so. Good thing because for the past 4 weeks my back has been out and I couldn't get out to water my garden... or should I now say my weed haven! Hope the air clears up and you have a beautiful weekend!
Today the air is really foul here. It looks like fog but it's smoke. I heard it's travelled all the way to Asheville, NC! 🤦♀️

Hey Sunshine! What a gorgeous painting for your son. You did such an amazing job with the greyscale on his hands. Wow. I love the bright light of the candle shining through the darkness. (Maybe you are the sunshine and your son is the candle light? LOL.) I watched another artist on UA-cam who makes black with burnt sienna and French ultramarine. I tried it and have used it ever since. It makes a really rich colour. Hope all's well over in your neck of the woods. Or rather the coast. I'm the one who's in the woods. 🙂 Ciao for now, beautiful!

Hi Lydia, Amazing again. the candle and the hand! wow! Lucky son and Happy 21st Birthday! I have never been one to want to go to these art course things or have lessons with an artist but I have to say, I would to learn from you. Sadly I am from the UK but have been living in Turkey for the last 18 years so I cannot imagine the chances of it happening or you teaching! I will content myself with your videos and admire from afar... :)

Hey! Been skipping school, you know us artists, always bent out or shape! Lol I’m back now and catching up! On this one, I love how you built up the huge contrast by doing the lights first then going with the dark… I would not have thought of this and would have struggled..!! Thank you again… You should teach for real (if you don’t already) you’d be awesome at it and people pay crazy money! So much you can buy another tube of the missing Orange-Cadmium!!! 😂
I still haven't found that elusive tube of paint! It completely vanished!😂 Thank you my friend for the kind words and encouragement. I would love to teach... Just not sure where to start. Online? In person? I'd love to do workshops.
@@lydiabroderick867 Start with a few "Free Workshops" or "Wine and painting nights" seem to go over big lol... Also schools are cutting art programs and parents are dying for alternatives... Like me, not all kids were into sprots and if wasn't for art classes and after school stuff I would have been lost... Or more so than I am already!! lol I just think you'd be a natural at it, who knows? It could take off..!!

Love this - great symbolism. I have a request (😊), would you do a drawing focused piece on a woman’s face? Similar to the ones we see on your channel…. Would love help with this! I love this so much. The artesty of it as well as the symbolism. My son turns 21 in October and he will also deploy with the Army's 101st in October. This would be a great way to honor both of these momentous life events. Do u do commissions? I love all your work.

Beautiful! Have you ever used a masterson sta-wet palette system? It will keep your color strings wet for weeks.

This is such a cool idea. How fast do the paints dry on the palette? Can you mist them, or were they ok?
They take about an hour to dry depending on relative humidity. That painting was done in the summer in the northeast, and it gets pretty humid here, but I used them in January of this year. They definitely dried faster. I didn't have to mist them at all though.
Sssooooo many gradients,......ugh. Always a daunting task to me. With my acrylics, I sometimes dab a drop of water on the palette next to a color, cover with a small cup....slight twist of the cup, and the water travels the rim sealing the paint glob, from drying out. I can then go get a burger, come back and the paint is still good to go 🙂
