The Mach 2 is a more lethal round compared to the .22lr.
This is due to the fact it is a much faster round despite being a lighter round.
The downside to the Mach 2 is it's price, it's more expensive.
The only reason I have a ton of these rounds is during the ammo crisis, I couldn't find .22's but plenty of Mach 2 and I wanted something to plink with.
I have since made sure that I will never have to worry about ammo shortages again for all my guns.
Shoot a box, buy two, rinse and repeat.

I love 22lr, but after I bought my first 17m2 i started shooting 17m2 75% of the time. They shoot much flatter and hit hard. They are a Lazer beam of death. Plinking gets a 22, hunting gets 17.

Yes 17 Mach 2 is a very cool little round just wish the ammo was a bit less expensive and easier to find. When I can get it I get a few bricks. I don’t personally know anyone else that has one.

So, my question is.... does the 17 mach 2 do less damage to small game than the .22lr? One reason I passed on the .17 HMR is because it apparently does too much damage to the meat if you don't hit exactly where you want (lets say the head).
Where as, if the .17 M2 does the same or less damage to the animal...while being more accurate with higher velocity, sounds like a superior rifle to the .22lr when it comes to shooting small game. What are your thoughts on this?

@@aidanmclean8574 with it having a ballistic tip, it's going to hurt more meat than a 22lr for sure. If I was just squirrel hunting, I'd probably use the 22lr, although I have used the 17m2 as well. Just head shots though with the 17.

17 Mach 2 will do a bit more damage I tested this in one of my 22 vs 17 videos on play doh to see the permanent wound cavity

Hello 👋 I have a question. I just bought a Walther p22ca and I saw this type of ammo and was wondering if my pistol can shoot and cycle with it?

I would say about the same as a 17 HMR. It's fairly loud, since it is going far above supersonic.

Why you got such a big scope on a 22?

    • @BROTUNED

I shoot a lot of long range with all my rifles so they all have higher end high magnification optics on them. Well the bolt guns do anyways. Semi autos have red dot or low power optics for closer in work like varmint control or more of a tactical style shooting. For the longer range stuff 400 500 yards

If comparing 17hm2 to 22lr it’s only fair to use stingers because that is the case that they used to make the hm2 or Mach 2

I've been debating on whether I should get a 17m2, 17hmr or 17wsm. I've pretty much convinced myself that I should get a 17hmr just for the ammo availability alone. I've never seen 17m2 in any local places. I rarely see 17wsm but I have seen 17hmr in nearly all the local stores (that sell ammo of course.) The same seems to hold true for online.

ya definetly Hm2 is getting hard to find locally if I see it I buy a bunch but to me now its more of a novelty.

@BROTUNED no not anymore they are spitting them out left and right. This lil Savage 17Mach 2 is catching on and becoming everyone's go to rifle. It's taking over the 22 rifle now.

Im in the process of doing some testing comparing the two through different barriers, and also if the hollowpoints of both will open. Comparing out of semiauto platforms though, so hopefully my result data is consistent.
