Post-black metal can be compared to stuff like post-punk. Where it is often more melancholic, more variations in terms of tempo and melody yet still maintain elements of the root genre. Not to mention, it's much more versatile, so you can experiment with different genre blends, soundscapes, effects, etc.
... Hello Flowers After Rainfall (your "name" could have been the title of an ALCEST's song, very lovely and poetic ^^) ... I am the old french metal fan (so my writting will be bad sorry), I know very well ALCEST and I can answer some of your questions ... So ALCEST is a Black Metal band, but a subgenre from the subgenre "Post-Black Metal", it's "Blackgaze Metal" (in reference of the " Shoegaze Alternative-Indie Rock/Metal" subgenre, it was a revolution in the last 80tees in the UK, very dreamy, but a lot of distortion in the sound, and often the bands played without looking at the audience, but only their SHOES - true history, not a joke ;) ... I loved it so much at this time ... NEIGE (SNOW in english) "the singer, composer and brain" has a special sounding scream (very well known from studios all over the world, alot of bands are asking him to come doing backing vocals and for sure his scream (UK and US studios the first ^^) . There is no filter in a scream, or a very high Black Metal shriek, the deep, and very deep growls are more heard in Doom metal or Death Metal ... The shriek and the growl are very dangerous for the voice if the singer is not trained (a melange of head voice, chest voice working with the false vocal chords and the breath. (if you're interested look about Will Ramos, singer from Lorna Shore (extreme black/death metal hard core), "One Take Recording" ... He is the best in this I think, he switches from the highest shrieks to clear vocals or the deepest growls without an effort ... Great technic ... I just heard it one more time it, very "noice" song ^^... So sorry I am far from ALCEST ... So you were talking about the people who in concerts are turning very fast in a circle (or doing two big rows) and than crushing into each other, it's named the Mosh Pit ... It is often very dangerous and very violent, crushed heads, broken bones are good friends here ! It's not for me, too old and non-violent and also not for ALCEST's shows ... NEIGE would not allows such a thing ! ALCEST in the 2, 3, or 4 first LPs was more in the scream (never forgetting the dreamy parts), but these last years, the music is more and more on the dreamy side, search after their last 2 videos, "L"'ENVOL" (THE TAKE OFF in english), only a scream at the end, but so beautifull and their very new song FLAMME JUMELLE (in english TWIN FLAME), asolutly faboulous, the real dream, no scream at all (just a little but very far away in the mix ... My 2 recommandations for going on your ALCEST journey (You'll easily find the link's, I think, hein ? ¨¨)... One last thing about the lyrics, NEIGE dont like the french language in metal music, so he has less and less real words in his songs, he puts together some Celtics or old Gaelic or also old south french words without any meaning, and also a lot of laa laaa tralala, like a yode,l it must just sounds nice to his ears ... So me I dont bother about the lyrics, there are some, very poetic I think(as a french I even dont understand him), but for me the title is enough, it is the poesy for me ...
