      Plus he had the scanner so he's most likely either been out of town and encountered Fedra soldiers in the wild. He would have had to deal with an infected person to know how it works so he's also probably killed one in close range not just with his traps.

    I think we are purposefully not getting nonstop gunplay/violence because we are going to get that towards the end of the season. Though we see this world is brutal, we are mostly being shielded from the immediate violence by the storytelling. (We don’t see the two Firefly gun battles, for example.) This is to set up the devastating violence that will happen to lead characters later. Thus adding to their overall narrative impact.

    Bill and Frank’s town not being raided as much or infected not appearing as much is kind of justified because of two reasons. The town is a on the country side where there is not a lot of chance of population being around as much. It also felt like really small town by the number of people FEDRA evacuates from the region at the beginning of their story. Fedra would have cleared up the other near by towns as well so less likely that infected would be around. Humans are also less likely to find their town because the town does not have any highways passing near by it. Joel and Ellie both take a small road to get to Bill and Frank’s which does not feel like an interstate or a highway. In the game Bill lives in a more city type region so it makes more sense to have infected there and not here. It also makes sense for the game because it gives the player something to do. The second reason would be because of the time jumps. They might have had previous raids as well but showing the raids for the sake of showing it to wouldnt really work for the story they were trying to tell i think. This could also explain why Bill got so cocky and didnt take cover while shooting at the raiders. Because in the supposed previous off screen raids the protected, electrified and apparently gasolined up fence would have taken care of a majority of the raiders and infected giving Bill over confidence in his ability to stop the raiders.
    The point of the love story is to make audience feel that there could be love in an apocalyptic grim dark world like this as well. At the same time Joel understanding the same thing as well is important to the story. He needs to understand and realize that his failures to protect the ones he loved shouldn’t make him lose all hope and stop him from trying or atleast this story is supposed to nudge him ever so lightly toward hope and not despair. In the game (unless you go back to the place), Tess’s death was never really shown to be processed or grieved by Joel. While in the HBO series, Ellie stopping short of reading Tess’s name aloud from the letter, Joel walking out to take a breather all make Tess’s death feel much more impactful than the game.
    In some ways the choices made in the series elevate the story even more than an already stupefyingly fantastic game.

    I was really looking forward to seeing Nick Offerman (Bill) interact with Bella Ramsey (Ellie) as I thought the chemistry between the two characters in the video game was great. So I was a bit disappointed by them cutting that out from the show. I also felt like, because Bill doesn't interact with Joel or Ellie in the present, his character overall has less importance to the story. Absolutely, you could've shown a lot of that story between Bill and Frank still but keep Bill alive to interact with Joel and Ellie in the present and help them with the battery in the game. We could've had the best of both worlds--sticking to the game story and adding something new but this was way too unbalanced compared to the great job they did balancing old and new in the first two episodes. The story between bill and frank has nearly no impact on Joel and Ellie because they die before they arrive too. Unfortunately all survival/zombie (well, all that I can think of) do a quick montage of them building up defenses then it's like its completely forgotten about. They act like they put up a 20ft steel wall that will never need repairs or get broken down. This show showed a HINT of it with Joel mentioning how the fence won't last. • @KoolKeithProductions
      @KoolKeithProductions Рік тому +5

      I'm not so sure about that. The bullet went right through, so as long as the wound was kept clean, Bill would be fine without Joel. Besides it was the middle of the night. Do we think Joel would have been up and ready to deliver life saving supplies then? Even if he left 1st thing in the morning, it would still be a while before he got to Bill. Plus, I think Bill would have mentioned in the note something like "I never liked you, or even thanked you for saving my life that night...", but there was nothing. So I think the "Call Joel" line was Bill thinking he was too far gone, and that Joel was someone like him, a protector. He would protect Frank after he was gone.

The different traps and obstacles they had to do through to get the car was insane, it brought a lot of moment for character development and building more trust and father daughter relationship between Joel and Ellie. I hate how they just waltz on in and get a car. How was bill and frank supposed to defend themselves if it’s that easy to get in. Also why wasn’t there any signs of attack? Damage or burnt buildings when it cuts to 2023? They could have easily had frank mention that all his hard work repainting had been destroyed by raiders. Something to indicate that they’ve struggled a lot more as time has past. Also I felt really uncomfortable with the ex scene, it went on for too long. Just imply they’re doing it by them walking into the room together and closing the door behind them. I did not want to see their god dman chest hair rub on each other lmao.

      Yeah, homophobic is supposed to refer to "fear". Uncomfortable by something is what fear is. Just like watching a ranchy scene with your parents makes you uncomfortable. Because of that, it's perfectly fine to FEEL uncomfortable by this stuff.
      I only point this out cause people will try to demonize the claim of "don't make me watch this" as homophobic. You pay for entertainment, that means the goal is to pander to what is entertaining. If a medium pushes the boundaries to the point of making you uncomfortable in an unwelcomed way, then it's completely failing it's primary directive.
      This is the ONLY episode of anything, any series, any movie, anything in ever, where I actually fast forwarded past some of the content. That's because my real issue with this episode. . . is that they made the characters even LESS important than they were in the game. Their entire significance to the plot could be summarized in the tea party flashback. That's it. Everything else could have been skipped with no significance lost. In the games, they mattered cause they gave you quests, objectives, interactions, banter. Here, they are nothing but a distraction from the plot rather than having an active role WITHIN the plot. That bothers me cause that means they objectively boil down to a waste of time. That's not fun for me, that's not what entertainment is. . . . that's what filler is.

      @@SmoothEmJay For me personally, its not about changes from game to show but about missing the point about what made the game great which was the relationship of Joel and Ellie. At this point they have spent more time on the relationship of Bill and Frank then they have on Joel and Ellie which is very sad to see as those are your main characters. If those changes did not effect the story of that relationship negatively then all for it but right now, Joel and Ellie just feel awkward together where as in the game by the time they left Bill you were already starting to see a relationship building. Its sad when a game can portray that better then a TV show.

  • @Pandaemoni
    @Pandaemoni Рік тому +24

    This episode absolutely does relate to Joel. People who say otherwise need to rewatch it. In fact, this episode explains the end of the game better than the game itself does. They draw a number of express parallels between Bill and Joel. In the end, in Bill's suicide note, it says that he was _glad to watch the world die_ but then he found one person to protect, and that that is Joel's purpose as well: to protect that special person. And what happens at the of the game? *[SPOILERS FOR A DECADE OLD GAME]* Joel protects Ellie, the person he has come to care about, and he does it at the cost of the whole world. It is 100% clear from the suicide note that Bill (at least as depicted in the show) would agree that Joel did the _right thing._ Playing the game, one kind of understands Joel's unstated reasoning...but this episode really foreshadows Joel's choice in a nice way. If the show ends the same way as the game, then one can easily imagine Bill's advice spurring Joel's actions.
    Could the same point have been made differently, say in 15 minutes rather than 45? Sure. The writers can write anything they want on a page. The episode worked so well, though, that I have trouble gainsaying that the artistic decisions they made were the right ones. It seems to me like they could have tightened up the Bill/Frank storyline, but maybe that would have thrown off the impact of Bill's character arc. Joel would have been aware of the depth of their relationship, and perhaps showing us (rather than telling us about) that depth may have helped sell Bill's observations about Joel.

      I don't know I thought he protects and loves Ellie as a daughter because he sees Sarah in her. I loved the ending in the game because if that was my daughter I too wouldn't have sacrificed herself even if that means we never get rid of the cordycep pandemic. Besides there's no proof that they could have made a cure from her, and it is mentioned in the game that they've already tried to make a cure from other people who like Ellie were immune.

    • @Pandaemoni
      @Pandaemoni Рік тому +1

      @@LetoAtreides82 The reason he protects Ellie (that he sees her like a daughter) doesn't negate Bill's advice, which was to protect those you love and to understand that that's his purpose in this world. That is true even though Ellie would absolutely *not* have wanted Joel to save her (which is why he has to lie to her about it).
      I dont recall prior immune people in the game...I recall Joel *_lying_* about there being other immune people to Ellie, but when he talks to Marlene he tells her to "find someone else" and she says "there is no one else." If there were more immune people out there, then she was lying or just too lazy to look for them. Remember that, in the game, she knew Ellie from when Ellie was just a baby, Ellie was family to her before Joel ever met Ellie. (And, of course, Joel also murdered a room full of doctors in a world with no more medical schools...so even if another immune person is ever found, there may be no doctors left to use that person, as was mentioned in the Last of Us Part II.)
      I also remember the Fireflies being pretty definitive in their statements about being able to make a vaccine once they harvested the cordyceps from Ellie. No one ever said it "might not work" that I recall. That it might not work was, I think, just an _inference_ from the fact that could have been lying about knowing how to make a cure. Given Marlene's readiness to sacrifice Ellie, and given how stupid they'd have to be to sacrifice the only immune person they know of on an unsupported "hunch," it makes sense that the Fireflies were probably reasonably sure it would work. So the cure was probably at hand...and even if it was 100%, Joel would have done same thing, I think.

That's really the major difference. He's less of a warning of what Joel might become and more of a reminder of what Joel failed to be to Tess. Both will serve a similar motivation for Joel moving forward as he opens up to Ellie. Calling him reduced to being "just gay" is really letting yourself be blind by the fact that a gay character takes center stage in a noticeable deviation from the source material.

    I think the reasoning behind Bill standing out in the open and getting shot was part of the over-arching motif that he starts as this rugged individual who is shut off from the world and completely self sufficient, but when Frank came along, he slowly begins to realize that he does care for someone more than himself, and I think it emphasizes his "change" into a caring and compassionate person and sort of lost his original (lack thereof) emotions and reclusive attitude. It's also displayed towards the beginning when he and Frank get into an argument, where Bill doesn't concede to Frank something as simple as paint ,showing his aversion to change whatsoever, but when the strawberry scene happened, he completely lost this part of him when he finds out that Frank traded a gun for them.
    I personally think it's a fantastic way to add DEPTH to Bill that he didn't really have in the games.

    It seems like most people liked this episode, but I have to be honest I didn’t like it *as a The Last of Us episode*, not as a show (which standalone would be great).
    They removed so much of Joel and Ellie’s journey and relationship with just a single episode. I mean, they entirely changed Bill and Frank’s arcs (Frank left and hung himself) and removed all of the banter and growth between Joel and Ellie, and the previously-hilarious Bill for that matter.
    Furthermore, changing Bill and Frank’s arc wasn’t even the issue, it was leaving out so much that hurts it, it could’ve been two episodes. If they wanted to spend an episode on characters that will be dead immediately (Bill doesn’t even die in the game) then why not show their impact on the main characters? It makes absolutely no sense, I’m sorry. This episode was basically a standalone series that has NO BEARING on Joel and Ellie other than leaving them a truck and gear.
    No infected, no bloater, no Joel hanging from a trap upside down, no surviving Bill’s traps, no escape with the truck, and no Ellie stealing shit from Bill. No bow, a smaller thing, no music shop, no gnomes, no “Bobby Fischer”… I can go on and on. I know it’s a show, they have to cut stuff, and it’s a reimagining of it clearly, but they cut the BEST stuff, the most important stuff to the characters who we are going to be with the entire time.
    Ellie hasn’t and never will meet Bill in this show. It’s just too big of a departure for me to feel confident in the remainder of the show. Anyone I told to watch the show will now have to play the game to know why I said that, which I suppose isn’t what I was hoping for. That’s kind of my own issue I know, they obviously want to tell a new story, I just wasn’t expecting that enormous of a change in the story I guess.

The fungus instead controls the muscles of the ant to make it go where it wants. This confirms what I had theorized: the infection took hold of Tess’s body, likely communicating with the runner to help speed up the take over.

    1 is the review of the episode (no spoilers)
    2 is the breakdown/spoilers of the episode/tv show up to the current episode.
    3 is including spoiler discussion based on what is known from playing the games.
    This is because a lot of people watching the show may not have played the game and so, while they have seen all of the show, might still be surprised and wouldn't want later events known from the game to be spoiled.

      the episodes are available on streaming, so you can literally watch it now instead of watching this review.
      The game spoilers are different and should be separated. Almost no one will buy a playstation just to play TLoU after watching the series (they will buy the PC version though).

      @@MrHakisak Let me clarify.
      I don't think the review should be 3 different videos, just organized into 3 parts, in the order as stated above.
      The reason I say this is because Angry Joe talks about the order of events he is predicting in the show/episodes based off of what happens in the game. This could be unwelcomed/spoil the story for people that haven't played the game. Therefor, discussion that relies on knowledge and involved knowledge of what happens in the game would best be saved for the end of the review video, not the middle of it like we had here.
      My brother, for example, hasn't played the game. He wants to hear AJ, OJ, and Alex discuss the specific details of the episode, but doesn't want to hear spoilers on what may happen in future episodes. I am thinking a lot of other viewers might feel the same way.

Despite my own prejudice I guess, it was beautiful to see the relationship for what it was. A man in the closet his entire pre-apocalypse life find love in a world that is nearly devoid of it. However I believe the Bill portrayed in this medium is better equipped for traps, engineering, hunting, gathering and not actual armed combat like his video game counterpart. As displayed with him dealing raiders without cover, his movement when he first exits his house with his gas mask, when he sits down his holster snags on the chair. The episode accomplishes the same end goal (Ellie and Joel get car) at the expense the action sequences in the game Joel being suspended from Bill's traps and fighting off infected, the bloater fight in the school, banter between Bill and Ellie. Lastly instead of Bill being the example of what Joel could end up like if he doesn't open up. Bill helps to chisel away the hard exterior Joel's had for years by living with love.

    Joe, it's been almost a full month into the new year of 2023. When are you going to do your annual best of/worst of 2022?

      I bet he will wait until March. Man this show has gotten lazy!!! I have been a subscriber since Xbox 360 days and I am not really enjoying it anymore. AJ makes mire money than ever but is lazier than ever with a full team and cohosts

      We all know it's because there's not as much money in january for youtubers. This is widely known and why many take a vacation during this one month. If he released the vids in January they would perform more poorly than if he released them in February.

    Regarding Joel not taking the weapons in Bills house, didnt Joel also say at the gas station that some ammo were precious? Don't remember if there were ammo in the shelter but perhaps that was the case he didnt bring more guns with them?

      He put the gun away because he didn't have more ammo for it and it was running low. He was saving it for a later time.

      Don't confuse the "show" for the "individual episode". If you're argument is "the show sucks", talk about a show as a whole, not narrow in on a specific episode.
