Reported that homophobic comment. BTW, 19:26 Missed "Careless Whisper" opportunity. As a gay man, I was a little let down that we didn't get the same funny moment as other SC videos.
The 80s song was not playing because bill put it up because frank was dying, it was playing because the computer had a timer setup that needed manually reset each week, if it was not reset, it automatically played 80s song to signal Joel and Tess that they might be in danger. Joel explains that in the episode.
Great line? Man u need to play this game to know what the great line is Ellie: We're here because you owe Joel some favors, and you can start by taking these off! [referring to handcuffs dangling from her wrist] Bill: I owe Joel some favors... is this some kind of joke? Joel: I'll cut to the chase: I need a car. Bill: Well, it is a joke. Joel needs a car! Well, if I had one that works, which I sure as hell don't, what makes you think I'd just give it to you? Huh? "Yeah sure, Joel, go ahead, take my car! Take all my food too, while you're at it! Ellie: By the looks of it, you could lose some of that food. Bill: [Points a knife at her] You listen to me, you little sh*t... Ellie: No, f*** you! You handcuffed me!

I agree. I think its more impactful that we didnt see them. Their bedroom basically became their tomb and keeping us out was very respectful towards the characters. I will never look at part 1's title screen the same again.
@@lonelyqueen86 And it'll also be hard watching Bill's portion in the game again knowing how miserable he is and that Frank hated him. To me at least, the way the show handled these characters was vastly superior to the game. And as someone that loves the game's story this huge deviation is my favorite episode thus far.
THIS. I loved the last shot when you saw the truck driving off through Bill and Frank’s open bedroom window. Something about the way the camera moved backwards made it feel like Bill and Frank were somehow “watching” them drive off.
The 80's song that Joel got in his radio back home (27:12) was not because Frank was dying. They address this perfectly, Joel says that the 80's song was on a weekly timer, if Bill was not around to reset the timer it will go on automatically, calling Joel & Tess to come and help Frank. I really love the attention payed to all this little and seemingly unimportant details.
Exactly my thaughts. And since the 80s were on for so long, I was aware of this threat from the beginning, that we might not meet in person with Bill, we might just get a memory, a flashback about him... I miss the opportunity of sarcastic parts with Ellie and Bill, but what was handed to me, gave a different, yet perfect experience. I was crying by these heavy emotions! These uninportant details hide a larger piece of easter egg every time, foreshadowing what is about to happen.
I really don’t understand people that say this episode added nothing to the story when it in fact is a part of the recurring theme of love throughout the series. It also fleshes out characters that couldn’t possibly be fleshed out due to the constraints of a video game. Beautiful beautiful episode, was sobbing
Small thing I noticed was the choice of grown foods this episode highlighted, Bill decides to grow carrots, a root vegetable that grows hidden away underground, while Frank picks strawberries, which fruit in full view above ground, brightly and sweet.
This episode broke my heart man. What great acting. Nick Offerman when he was first kissed looked almost like a scared school girl. Trembling and uncertain. Close in on himself like mental protection. I was blown away by the body language he displayed. Acting like that deserves an award.
I honestly wasn't expecting to cry during this episode. I was ready for some badass parts where we went gun blazing to the infected school. But this was just so wholesome. Best line is Ellie reading Bill's letter and he included the "hehehehe". Very on brand for him.
I did not expect to spend tonight bawling my eyes out watching the love story of Ron Swanson and Armond from White Lotus, but here were are. What incredible performances! What a show, man.
Seriously. My wife and I thought we can binge watch it. We had to take a break after episode 3 given how incredibly beautiful it was. It’s by far one of my favorite hours of TV ever.
As someone who has not played the game, I gotta say… this was simply a perfect episode of television. So utterly human and full of compassion, pathos, strength.
Lol. TV is starting to figure out, if ypu want to adabt a game, actually do it. Video game stories have been getting to the point theyre so far beyond movies, its sad. And YOU get to be the main guy. Check out the game.
@GlenBarton if you ever get the chance, set aside a few hours and watch a playthrough of the first game... I recommend "TheRadBrad"'s playthrough. It will give you a real appreciation of how much effort the creators of this series have put in, in relation to the game.
I don’t know if anyone mentioned this yet but when the four are having the meal outside, Joel and Bill’s cups are half full and Tess and Frank’s cups are pretty much full. Not sure if it mirrors the outlooks they both have but it was something that was brought to my mind.
I noticed that too. But I interpreted differently than you. I just thought that bill and Joel are always on edge, so they drink to calm their nerves. But i think yours is correct. Bill and Joel see the world as “half full” vs Tess and frank.
@@nokturn882 the way they pan over the dining room table when Ellie and Joel enter Bill's house is pretty emotional too, you see all the glasses and the wine and even the envelope of drugs still on the table
@@nokturn882 I actually thought the opposite, that bill and Joel drank sparingly because they wanted to stay alert in case the other turned on them. Tess and Frank are much more relaxed and can enjoy it
this episode felt like a master class of story telling, I love that linda ronstandt was featured, she has such a great voice. this episode was probably the best romance I've seen in a long time. just so wholesome, and heartwarming. I was completely enthralled, I cried, and I hoped it wouldn't have a romeo and juliet ending.
spent most of the second half of this episode ugly crying, the acting in this show is phenomenal and bartlett and offerman showed such tenderness and complexity - truly one of the best episodes of tv I've ever seen.
@@bananalanders2962 coz this eps is wasting time, whats the point of gay scene about bill and franck to the story? Nothing, but if they put bill like in the game he will help joel to get the car so they can go to next place, and the thing that u miss is how great the interaction of bill and elli, just watch the cutscene from the game if u never played that, this eps actually the iconic bill and ellie line "fvck you you handcuff me"
Im glad I wasn’t the only one just in tears the second half of this episode lol. Yes it is a big difference from the game but I don’t mind this change.
I was panicking & repeatedly like 'please don't be evil' from the time Frank arrived to the point in the dinner about the wine pairing. Then I knew we'd be getting something lovely. Brilliantly done.
Meee tooo! When Bill was playing the piano and Frank was off camera I was cringing thinking Frank was about to bash Bill in the head or shoot Bill! I was wonderfully surprised. Best episode. ❤😊
Man, it's episodes like these (that take a beat to focus on character development) are what give shows a 3rd dimension... changes and all, I loved this episode.
Giving Bill the protecting someone hits better with the audience when they gave it a background than just passing a letter to Joel about making Tess safe. They are doing the Mando feels by developing the character into protecting someone. THIS IS THE WAY!!
I was under the impression that frank had something like MS or ALS because he mentioned a lack of a cure pre-outbreak. Not that we have a cure for cancer but there's medicine to beat it. This was such a beautiful episode and I'm still processing it.
@@SALVATl0N I would say from personal experience as a caregiver for 18 years that the depiction of Frank is an order of magnitude better quality of life continuously than my spouse with MS, that doesn’t even account for a more severe type of MS called primary progressive multiple sclerosis PPMS which is a continuous slide downward with no remission
Great episode, Nick Offerman should get a couple awards from this performance, still I cant help to be a little disapointed cause I really wanted to see Bill and Ellie interact.
Hahaha yeah you like when your a$$ get fvck buddy 🥵, this eps is 100/100 for gay a$$ people ofc, hope they made incest and pedo relationship too in this movie so its balance, like joel fvck ellie coz its so normal right
Me too but I’m not gonna lie, I’m happy he went out with his partner instead, unlike the rest of the world where they don’t even have the option or possibility to be with their loved ones in their last moments. :/ Great episode imo
27:12 The 80’s music that was playing at the end of the episode which we hear in ep.1 was set up to play if bill didn’t reset a timer. This is a backup to let Joel and Tess know that something is wrong.
Really??!!! I hated this project til this ep! I thought Joel said smtn like "Ohh Noo" & Ellie said " Trouble" Can someone please tell me what was said in ep1 abt 80's music? TY!
@@imkitti1942 The dialogue was something like what you wrote. Ellie lied about hearing anything on the radio and just looked up an 80s song to tell Joel, which caused him to reveal that this code meant trouble. Then an 80s song, "Never Let Me Down Again", plays on the radio after they've left.
When you thought the most emotional bit was going to be a baby skull and a rainbow blanket. What an episode. I was emotionally broken. Superb. And Bill even left the bag on the table for Joel.
Something else I noticed: On Bill’s letter, it says “To Whomever, but probably Joel”. BUT, above the “O” in whomever, the “M” is smaller and in different handwriting, so Bill probably wrote “whoever” but Frank added the “m” to make it grammatically correct, which fits their respective characters. 25:13
I liked that Frank was able to say he had bad days with Bill. It made it more of a real relationship with depth rather than a one dimensional statement of “love is still out there”. Making it an effort leans more into the theme of the show
The way they handled Bill’s story in the show works better for the drama series format. The game’s version is much more built for gameplay than story, I get the changes
U clearly never play that game, they should put ellie and bill interaction coz thats really interesting if u ever played that game, u must be never here the legend line "ah sh!t u handcuff me" or the way ellie want to kill bill to protect joel, ohh yeah i forget this drama isnt about ellie and joel yahh its about unimportant gay story 🤡
I loved the little talk between Joel and Ellie where Joel explains his scar was from being shot at, but they missed, and he also missed shooting back, saying it's generally not that easy to shoot someone. Subtle jab at the Walking Dead where everyone becomes proficient at zombie headshots within about 2 episodes.
I don’t normally cry during TV or movies nowadays, so when this episode made me cry not once but multiple times, I did not know what to do with myself. It was so gentle and beautiful and I was prepared for something so different. Easily some of the best television I’ve seen in a very long time
Oh my God my wife and I cried. This was so emotional I had to walk out of the room at one point. The Walking Dead had a great beginning. I feel like this show has even more and it's just at the beginning of its run. And yes in the beginning I just kept thinking Frank was going to try to Kill Bill and I'm so glad that it turned out to be something very special.
They chose how they would live and they chose how they died, they basically "won" against the apocalypse where people don't chose how to live and even less how to die. The best episode.
As someone with first-hand experience caring for someone with ALS, I believe Frank is supposed to be succumbing to ALS, MS, or a similar neurodegenerative disorder rather than cancer. I believe a neurodegenderative disease was chosen intentionally since the symptoms include twitching and ultimately losing control of your body like in cordyceps infection. His medications are likely a muscle relaxer to prevent twitching and cramps in failing muscles, a mucus thinner to make swallowing easier, and some kind of antidepressant/antianxiety/mild sedative.
If you asked me few weeks ago I would tell you I don't want the show to deviate from the game. I was wrong. I was so wrong. This episode was masterfully done and so much better than the section in the game, and I loved Bill's town ingame. Just wow.
@@dougiefresh2789 different medium Doug. It's a passive medium. You've got to tell a story. I love my 80s action flicks. But that's for like 90-100 minutes not a mini series.
When Bill says "I was never afraid until you showed up" to Frank it really hit me in the feels. I watched this episode with friends and I couldn't hold back my tears. It was a sad, sad one. It's nice that they explain back stories on things we don't see in the games. I love how they change little things here and there to surprise us. I loved how they changed Bill and Frank's story. Some people felt this episode was just fillers but it wasn't. It explains a lot.
this episode was amazing! the depiction of a gay couple alone was top notch because it was written as humanly as possible and not gay-pointed. I loved the simple scenes that showed the beauty of their little capsulized world and how contrasting that is with everything else around them. And how in the end and with the note it was a clear parallel of what Joel is going to be to Ellie. Joel is much like Bill and Ellie is like Frank, they can only help each other from here.
100%!! It was such a small line but with big impact to ciment the role of Joel as a protector who’s only purpose in all of this is to take care of Ellie.. for everything they will face. So glad your being this up :)
This shit was gay af what you mean? Totally unecessary and strays away from the greatness of the actual story thats meant to be told. Ppl like you are forcing stories into this bs by agreeing wiht it
Exactly! This is realistic homosexuality done amazingly well and Nick Offermans body language and all around acting was great. The trembling and unknowingly closing his body in when uncertain about the first kiss he shared was genius.
@@johnscilleto I think it's a realistic reaction to that kind of situation for anybody period. If you've gone your whole life never having done anything intimate like that you'd be a rollercoaster of emotions. In this episode it's so good that you can watch Bill's exterior fall right off with that kiss. That was the first time in his life he'd ever got to be himself.
This is quite possibly the best acting in a TV series I've ever seen. Thankyou for breaking our hearts one week and keeping us shocked for the rest 👏👏👏
This episode literally made me cry twice first when bill ,and frank kissed for the first time ,and second during the entire sequence of their final day. I'm also glad we saw bill's soft side ,and I'm also glad he ,and his soul mate were able to die together in this universe it was tragic, but so beautiful.
The second I saw the Pills I was thinking "wow they must be really good friends with Joel if they got to keep the baggie" LOL This Episode is just superb on so many levels. there was no down side or slow spot. Like every second was something you needed to know!
There's this 'random' camera cut when Joel was knocking on Bill's bedroom door and suddenly the front door closes. Other's theorize that Bill was still alive and snuck out somehow; but i think it could be a metaphor for how Bill's letter to Joel (which Ellie reads shortly after) locks Joel in and forces him to confront his grief about Tess' death and come to terms with his new role as Ellie's protector.
I loved this episode. I wondered if Bill took care of his mother until her death, and was fully prepared to to the same for Frank. Bill built a bunker, and left the rest of the house the same. Frank brings life back to Bill, and as his health fails he doesn't want Bill to suffer in the years they have left. It's about quality of life, and living rather than mere survival.
I was expecting Frank to die on that raid bc we don't see him on the game, it was just a much hardened Bill who is closed off and warned Joel about the implications of caring. But I love this ending, honestly they won the apocalypse. They found love, own a town, have water and electricity and farm, have traps to keep intruders off, and it lasted 20 years
I'm telling myself to try not and judge too quickly and see where they are going with this but I just hated that scene. She comes across as completely creepy and psychotic reminiscent of a kid torturing animals. I hope I'm misreading it because it just feels like complete character assassination and I say this as someone that's liked her outside this scene.
@@vilhelmofro249 I think it’s referring to when she asked Joel if it’s hard to kill infected. It will probably build to a time when it’s not so easy to do.
@@vilhelmofro249 I like to say you are misreading it, you gotta realize of youve played the last of us left behind than you should now why she is a bit psychotic with it also zombies led her through hell
@@vilhelmofro249 I would imagine a kid that is growing in an environment with nothing but death around would become desensitize to murdering a "zombie".
The 80s song was playing in the bunker because it was an automated warning. Joel says that Bill put it on a timer so that if Bill never resets it every couple of weeks at a certain time, then it basically lets out a distress signal for Joel and Tess to come and help. Bill probably did this in the event that he dies before Frank and the distress call would call Joel and Tess to help save Frank. It plays on a loop and broadcasts onto Joel’s radio. We hear it at the end of the first episode which I guess signals that Frank and Bill’s death was super recent. At least on week ago.
Not to mention this episode showed that Bill's letter was the final catalyst that makes Joel decide that Ellie is his real mission. Up until then, the only thing Joel talked about was getting to Tommy and now he literally says that Tommy may know where to find the firefly doctors to get Ellie to. Tommy is now just a waypoint instead of the final destination. If we don't meet Bill and go through his relationship with Frank in the detail that we did; it wouldn't be believable that Joel would really take Bill's words to heart.
Ellie and the clock 26:18 reminded me of this song... My grandfather's clock Was too large for the shelf So it stood ninety years on the floor It was taller by half Than the old man himself Though it weighed not a pennyweight more It was bought on the morn Of the day that he was born And was always his treasure and pride But it stopped short Never to go again When the old man died... Great episode.
This was a good episode. I wanted to cry. It was one of the best episodes of a series I've seen this year so far. It was sweet and beautifully done. Everything from their relationship to the daily routine and preparation after the world fell into chaos was so well done. I love Nick Offerman as an actor and his dramatic acting is amazing.
oh man this episode hit me hard. i love the changes that they made and i think this smaller story nestled in with the themes of the larger narrative beautifully. awesome video! there were a lot of things i didn’t catch and im always so amazed by the details in these episodes 😭
Missed some things, the Last of Us podcast mentioned that Frank had something similar to MS, not cancer. Bill had the machine on loop for 80's so Joel would come get their things. The window shot at the end is the menu screen from the first game.
Your attention to detail and ability to read inbetween the lines is a respectable trait..if your doing this alone...Hats off....your connections and ability to see the emotion and psychological aspect of it is admirable..sorry for your loss and thank you for your attention to detail...
Amazing episode. I have 0 complaints. Totally nailed the "being human" side of this story/world. It's all about that. Who cares it's not exactly like the game... I'm sure they'll make up for it in other ways (personally I think they already did, a lot of nice game references in this). It's a great adaptation! Such a beautiful story.
I’ve never played the game. But I thought frank was suspicious from the beginning. It was heartbreaking to see the ending but he turned out to be a good guy who saves Bill in many ways. Amazing episode.
The last half of the show hit pretty heavy; having taken care of someone that couldn’t stand or move on their own, needing to be moved, i found comfort in the level of love displayed and how tender it was. It added an extra element because it’s easy to say I would do that for someone I love until you’re actually having to do it.. Bill never looked bothered by it. They both looked liked they’d accepted that this was their lives but they wouldn’t change it. This was a deep episode. 🙏🙏👍👍👍
I know what you mean, I was in the same situation… twice. My mom and my uncle. I felt helpless, I felt any reassurance I give them is just a lie and the pain they feel will just get worst. I couldn’t show them my real emotions because I know it will make them lose what ever hope they had left.
Red burgundy is ideal with rabbit. Pinot noir would be expected but Beaujolais works just as well. Its more about the dish and wine being from the same region than it is about the gamay varietal 🤓
I’ve been crying since the strawberries. Still crying and it’s been half an hour since I watched that bittersweet ending. I like it better than the game version. 💔💔💔
Enjoyed this episode and your thoughts! Super-minor correction - the music playing in the bunker is due to Bill being dead and not resetting a timer every few weeks. Joel explains it in a quick line. It also suggests they died not all that long ago bc the 80s music just started at the end of episode 1. I like that they tied up that thread. Also, that timeframe is consistent with the rotten food, dying flowers, etc.
Bill & Frank absolutely destroyed me. I did not see the emotional twist coming. The red herring was delivered wonderfully and impacts you more when the wine is finished. Great unexpected episode for folks who haven't played the games.
@@viceb7 You when you've watched something special, when it simply cannot leave your thoughts. I honestly want to show it someone who like me doesn't know the medium and can have a fresh take on it as I did. This is a great conversation piece.
I can’t believe you missed this bc it was my favorite line in the episode ! When talking about the kinds of foods that got tainted by the fungus Joel mentions pancake mix. In the first episode Sarah wanted to make Joel pancakes for his birthday breakfast but they were out of pancake mix !
I know! This episode got so much hate online! I think MAGA survivalists who saw themselves in Bill felt blindsided by the romance and confused by the feelings it awoke in themselves.
The thing i liked most about Bill and Frank's story is that it had such a happy ending. They were together and went out on their own terms, after having lived fulfilling and happy lives together. In a world with some pretty unhappy endings, i just feel like they did Bill and Frank justice on this one.
Bill and Frank! What an incredible episode and beautiful love story. And such a variety of emotions. I have to confess that I was worried when Tess and Joel showed up, as Tess referenced the awful things that they had done in the past and was hoping they would not try to rob him. That was a cool way to show that their life wasn't just surviving, they were also living. Suberb.
What a phenomenal episode … and your analysis of it was fantastic. Particularly insightful about Bill being closeted, and burying who he really was in the sub-basement. Great job, Ryan!
9:25 i felt like the monkey thing was a nod to the voice recordings at the lab at the University of Eastern Colorado when one of the monkeys bit a researcher (even tho it wasnt patient 0 I thought it was a cool mini recording that is easily missed if the gamer doesn't pay too much attention to looting every nook and cranny
I like that they showed Frank getting the gun from the drawer in the living room in the flashback, so we know right away what Ellie found there when she was snooping.
Ryan is amazing at breaking down the subtext in each of the choices made in these shows and the choices the actors make in their roles. There is always the debate “does it really go that deep?” But I know there are some of the creatives on this show who probably did have these hidden subtexts and are probably so happy when someone else notices. Good job Ryan
This was such a great episode. I love the way Neil Druckmann described it. "If it's kind of the same, or worse, we stick to the game. If it's better, we deviate." This was a perfect example of that.
Apparently, not a lot of folks watch the "Inside the Episode" portion of the show. Otherwise, they may not have so much hate for this particular episode, which was fantastic!!
Hey Ryan. Love your videos. I noticed near the end of your video you mention that maybe Bill turned on 80s for medicine Frank. In the episode Joel mentions the radio is set to turn to 80s after a few weeks if Bill doesn’t reset some timer.
While the bill and ellie dynamic was obviously missed, the bill and frank dynamic was perfectly suitable and added so much to an already great character. Such great performances. I was inconsolable.
Two things I wanted to point out: 1) probably not cancer but schlerosis (i dont know to spell this) like stephen hawking, you get this by his movement impairement and he saying that humanity didnt have a cure/treatment for it before the outbreak anyway. 2) the 80s song rolling at the ending of the episode, which may be the same from ep1 is in fact explained by Joel. The playlist was programmed to play automatically in case of Bill's absence.
This episode was stunning. I love what they did, in any medium this world be great but doing it on this show with these two actors and just superb writing. I literally had a lump in my throat most of the episode and really just made me hold my loved one close. It hit so hard but earned ever bit of emotion. Loved it
Love your videos! About the Civil War. Notice at 12:19 how Frank wears blue and Bill wears gray - perhaps another Civil War symbol about how the two are reconnected even though they have their differences.
The other detail I liked was that we didn’t need to see the loving couple dead in the bed. In the note, he said he left the window open. So in that final shot was looking out through the open window we knew that they were just out of sight.
I like how they weren't real specific with Frank's illness, but if I had to guess, it probably wasn't cancer. It looked like something that was more degenerative, like ALS. He mentioned that even before the apocalypse, they didn't have a cure for what he had, which would fit ALS too.
Even though it didn't follow the story on the game I totally loved this episode. The love story between Bill and Frank was told very well, with emotion and great acting between the two actors. Best thing I've seen in a very long time.
It might seem a little obvious to call an easter egg but I like that it’s subtly mentioned that the handgun that Joel uses likely came from Frank in trade for the strawberries
9:30 the monkey thing is first and foremost a reference to the fact that Ellie sees a troop of monkeys (that were used in experimentation related to cordyceps) at a University later on in the game.

The 80s song was not playing because bill put it up because frank was dying, it was playing because the computer had a timer setup that needed manually reset each week, if it was not reset, it automatically played 80s song to signal Joel and Tess that they might be in danger. Joel explains that in the episode.

Not only that, they used a time appropriate media player, looked like very close to a version of Winamp from 2003.
Came to the comments looking for this. It's not often I catch something that ScreenCrush doesn't lol
20 years with someone you love in real life is a gift. In a post-apocolyptic zombie world, it's unfathomably precious. Such a great episode...
I really don’t understand people that say this episode added nothing to the story when it in fact is a part of the recurring theme of love throughout the series. It also fleshes out characters that couldn’t possibly be fleshed out due to the constraints of a video game. Beautiful beautiful episode, was sobbing
It's not really "post" since it's still happening, but yes I agree.

Small thing I noticed was the choice of grown foods this episode highlighted, Bill decides to grow carrots, a root vegetable that grows hidden away underground, while Frank picks strawberries, which fruit in full view above ground, brightly and sweet.
I'm really enjoyhing the comments on these episodes cuz people are pointing out all sorts of details I've missed. These shows are so well done.
Good one. 🥕
That "Hehehehehehehehehehe" was so surprisingly funny. I laughed soooo freaking hard!! Bella nailed it! The look... amazing!
Ikr I was crying but when she said that I couldn't help but laugh lmao

So you don’t understand character development. You’re immune to logic.
Yeah too many people make the assumption of cancer who aren’t familiar with neurodegenerative diseases, fortunate people to be ignorant
I am a nurse ad was also thinking ALS or a MS or even a stroke by the way he was holding his hands and his legs.
He did mention an MRI, so it was almost certainly something in the brain.
I'd say definitely ALS. MS can have times of feeling better. ALS a continuous slide towards a loss of even function of your lungs.

27:12 The 80’s music that was playing at the end of the episode which we hear in ep.1 was set up to play if bill didn’t reset a timer. This is a backup to let Joel and Tess know that something is wrong.

I don’t know if it’s a reference but when Bill is at the Home Depot reminded me to Ron Swanson saying “I know more than you…”
I liked that Frank was able to say he had bad days with Bill.

I have never been so affected by a story of 2 people in such short time. Amazing job. So many great 1 liners of epic love. Goddamn that was good
They chose how they would live and they chose how they died, they basically "won" against the apocalypse where people don't chose how to live and even less how to die.

Just wow.

Some people felt this episode was just fillers but it wasn't. It explains a lot.
I love that they use Max Richter's "On the nature of daylight" for Bill and Frank's wedding🥲 such a beautiful and emotional song
Thank you! I thought the song sounded familiar but couldn’t place it till I saw your comment.
when that came on the waterworks went out of control for me.
I saw so much of myself on Bill, I was tearing up throughout the episode. IT was beautifully written and the acting was on point.
this episode was amazing! the depiction of a gay couple alone was top notch because it was written as humanly as possible and not gay-pointed.

Bill’s song just sounds and feels so beautiful. Almost as beautiful as Joel’s song. Nick Offerman deserves an Oscar.
I'm 52, never played the game, that was one of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen. The show is a masterpiece so far.
this was a delightful recap, one of your bests... thank you for treating Bill and Frank's relationship with as much grace and care as the show does
I was expecting Frank to die on that raid bc we don't see him on the game, it was just a much hardened Bill who is closed off and warned Joel about the implications of caring. But I love this ending, honestly they won the apocalypse. They found love, own a town, have water and electricity and farm, have traps to keep intruders off, and it lasted 20 years
The scene with Ellie, and the dead infected is fascinating. They're building to something that might better inform.
I'm telling myself to try not and judge too quickly and see where they are going with this but I just hated that scene. I hope I'm misreading it because it just feels like complete character assassination and I say this as someone that's liked her outside this scene.

This episode made my entire family cry, even my big tough dad. It was so beautiful and bittersweet.
On the pills scene between Bill
And Frank when people add ee sounds at the end is a sign of
Affection!
My grandfather's clock
Was too large for the shelf
So it stood ninety years on the floor
It was taller by half
Than the old man himself
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more
It was bought on the morn
Of the day that he was born
And was always his treasure and pride
But it stopped short
Never to go again
When the old man died...
Great episode.

Missed some things,
the Last of Us podcast mentioned that Frank had something similar to MS, not cancer. Bill had the machine on loop for 80's so Joel would come get their things. The window shot at the end is the menu screen from the first game.
Frank had parkinson's disease. It's very similar to MS.

They both saved each other.
My favourite episode so far, an oasis of love in a land of horror, amazing writing and acting across the board.
'80s song toward the end is 'Chains of Love' by Erasure. Lyrics are very much in line with the themes of this absolutely incredible episode.

I know! This episode got so much hate online! I think MAGA survivalists who saw themselves in Bill felt blindsided by the romance and confused by the feelings it awoke in themselves.
The long view out Bill and Franks Window at the end of the episode is also a throwback to the "press start" screen at the beginning of the game.
Suberb.
This was one of the most beautiful episodes of TV I have ever seen.
And, I too, cried
The strawberry scene was nice. Showing how the little things make life worth living.
27:10 Actually 80's song explained, he said it would play automatically if the counter is not reset.
I love that you used the proper term of “stalker” from the game when talking about the infected that Ellie encountered in the basement

I was happy that Bill got to go out with his partner, it was beautiful and very sad
This episode was everything. Could’ve easily been any topic not just zombies. Incredible episode. Gonna be hard to top this one.
I was thinking more of Parkinson's disease with the little tremors or maybe MS with the lack of strength.
@@Ditchdigger2005 I considered parkinson's as well
This episode was stunning.
Loved this episode, Bill and Frank's story was heart wrenching
I like how they weren't real specific with Frank's illness, but if I had to guess, it probably wasn't cancer. It looked like something that was more degenerative, like ALS. He mentioned that even before the apocalypse, they didn't have a cure for what he had, which would fit ALS too.
This review actually made me appreciated the episode so much more. Such beautiful commentary.
Even though it didn't follow the story on the game I totally loved this episode. The love story between Bill and Frank was told very well, with emotion and great acting between the two actors. Best thing I've seen in a very long time.
I’ve yet to play the game, but this episode was great. Offerman and Bartlett were fantastic! Hope they get nominated for these roles.
This has probably already been noted, but the dying Frank looked very much like he had ALS rather than cancer.
It might seem a little obvious to call an easter egg but I like that it’s subtly mentioned that the handgun that Joel uses likely came from Frank in trade for the strawberries
