Pixel art is an art form that was originally used for classic video games to create art that was easy to make, didn't take up a lot of cartridge space, and was easy to use very few colours (to work with old TVs / technology).
However, nowadays pixel art is seen as it's own unique medium of art and is a style loved by many!
This is my personal favourite art-style for Indie Games currently and is the style that I have adopted to create my own games.

I have mad respect for pixel art artists, I like drawing city scapes and anime but I’ve been wanting to learn how to draw pixel art, something about simplifying the form is so difficult for me to do-so this video helped a lot! I wasn’t even sure where to start drawing
I find graph paper to be the most fun way to do pixel art, im nowhere near steady with my mouse.
I also really respect pixel artists, Street Fighter 3rd Strike still leaves me in complete awe every time I look at it
just realized that i actually used to make pixel art since i was a little cyberpotato making "minecraft" inspired pixel art, i think art flows in my veins

I have been drawing digitally for about 5 years now, but I only started pixel art like last year. I gotta say, pixel art taught me so much. Mainly the fact that art is a lot more about creating the illusion of a form than actually drawing the form. Implied meaning, that kind of thing. Like a nose doesn’t have to look like a nose per se, it just has to give the illusion of a nose when in context (on the face in most cases). So that’s my advice for beginners: give implied meaning in art a chance. It’s a lot stronger of a tool than it might seem.
Great insight! You are definitely on to something here 😁
That self-taught callout hit, yeah, hit pretty hard. It's not that I want to be "self taught", it's that I've never really learned to put in efforts into the basics and figured out how to study. I'm trying to figure that out, but it's really difficult seeing as college is also about trying to figure out how to study. I want to be an artist and I want to be good at things, but I simply can't figure these things out or put in the focus on my own. Honestly, being smart as a kid sucked.
wanna b smart -> buy smart books (WITH EXERCISES, THATS IMPORTANT) -> read -> do some exercises -> read -> do some exercises -> read -> do some exercises -> ... -> congrats, ur smart

I have some tutorials for you if you're interested. More simpler ones will come soon, so they might be ideal for you (:
16 x 16 is a good size but more easy at start is 32 x 32 but the words are totally true that if you start detailing 16 x 16 it requires much lesser detail than others also using palettes at start is good hue shift at start is difficult 😅 also you can do that outline easily a tip from me is use a black color with alpha around 75 on it and yeah you got it
32x32 is not a good starting size
@@DeletedUserOfficial I think it is, makes me feel a lot less restricted even if you dont use it up that much

4:41 Very interesting detail regarding the HSV shifting alterating depending on if you're going darker or lighter and also the material too.
yeah, that was actually a really good tip. i don't think i wouldve came across that idea if i was just doing it self taught for maybe a long time. this video was really helpful, wonderful guy
Your goal was 300 likes and I’m here 3 years later and you’re at 48k likes. You did it!
I love that a lot of these tips are basically the same for tradicional/digital art, too. The way you make the illumation, shading, and even your tips about references. Once i heard ``you cant make a professional work if you dont base your work on one of a professional``. The new thing for me was that you decreased the saturation at shadings. For some anime drawings, specially with characters, we even make it higher, to make it sexier and easier to see in the shadows. Its new to me the concept to increase the saturation at illumination, too. Ill test it to see how it looks.
Glad you found some use out of this!! Stay productive and keep learning :D
4 years and this video came up first in the search engine, nice!

As a long-time pixel artist, these are really great tips for beginners! Even I learned some things!
It kind of helped. I think it's because I'm not really an artist, but still I'd love to have pixel art in my games so I will keep trying to make it good until it's ready
wanted to learn pixel art really quick and really enjoy the vibe. ive subbed before the tips and this is my first video. thanks for the effort!
Hope it helped!!! Good luck!
I have been working on pixel art for over 3 years (probably more like 5) and never really studying references, although occasionally being inspired by the art of others. One thing I definitely lacked was a skill like you described on making a raw sketch in pixel art. I always went into full detail. When I worked by hand instead of computer (I do not use drawing tablets), I would not do outlines of my drawings either, but in pixel art, I did not even have a clue what I would do. I would try making a purely one color outline and it did not work too bad but it felt unnatural.
Perhaps the hardest thing about using a reference is that I am often most impressed by animation which I have done very little work in because it is a bit hard to grasp when I should animate my art. It took me a while to realize that smaller pixel art canvases were good, but I still never used them quite the way you show here. I rarely filled them completely with an image, like I was doing a sprite. I also never tried going as low as 8x8 ever or 16x16 in my non-game project work. Probably the most inspiring pixel art I have seen was Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, but it is animation based, in a size probably quite large and hyper-realistic detail. It was a game that only a company with a good budget could make, especially those animations. I do not see how looking at a 4x4 pixel square of it will tell me how to make the art.
One last thing that held me back was my environment being terrible so I could not work on my art 90% of the time.
HOW DID YOU EDIT THE COMMENT I WANT TO DO THAT PLS TELL ME HOW TO DO IT

Also the "Welcome dummies" made me feel like I was right where I belonged
Im such a dummy i needed to watch it 57 times to understand the first part 😮😮😮😮
And i can say it is very good and i learned how to pixel art
I'm a pixel artist and a regular artist and in both of them, my only problem is it's really hard for me to draw any body part other than the head. When I drew the body for the main character of the game I was working on, it looked really unnatural and I knew I couldn't work with that. I was planning on switching to HD sprites after a while anyways but it was still really hard to do.

Teaching is actuelly an excellent way to learn and/or keep information at an easy reach when retreiving it through the long term memory.
It forces an individual to vulgarise ou dive deep into the thechnicallity of any given subject.
By doing so, it allows the person to instantly understand what part of the information is still to be worked on.
This sudden realisation is due to a logical fallacy where humans lean towards believing they understand stuff far better than they actually do.
This works for just about anything.
Great stuff.
Great stuff!
