  • My 2002 Mercedes Benz W210 E Class Wagon had a transmission problem and needed to be towed home. This is the second part of the series, in part 1 I did some troubleshooting and decided to order the repair kit from @FCPEuro to change the conductor plate and pilot bushing.

    It seems to have worked and the Benz transmission is back to working again.

    Ive got a w211 with the 722.6 gearbox and it will not even attempt to move. Its had a new conductor plate fitted. Checked oil level. The gearstick module is working as it tells you on the dash if youve chosen D or R and so on but it will not even attempt to move. When in gear it will only rev to 2000k but neutral or park it will rev all the way up. Looks like im going to have to swap the transmission :( 😞 and outside in the cold weather of the uk. Yay 😂 happy to see you have sorted yours out though 😊

      Unfortunately my ‘repair’ only lasted a few weeks then it failed again. I had to pay to have a used transmission installed again. The car is on its third transmission now :(
      Besides the transmission in valve cover oil leaks it’s near perfect though :)

      @brown911 do you have any ideas why yours have failed twice or just purely bad luck. They are supposed to be great gearbox. My previous one was bulletproof but things can happen with anything. My current car only has 91k on the clock which doesn't seam much for it to have gone already

      I also heard these transmissions are supposed to be reliable. I only have 120,000 kilometers and I’m on my third one. I couldn’t see or feel any reason for the failure. I’m worried maybe my transmission cooler is bad or ?

      @brown911 it would be worth changing it just incase or possibly upgrade it

    I have rear abs sensor which caused limp mode do I need to reset by diagnostics?

    Hello 🙋‍♂️ did all the sensors come with the new conductor plate. o have a 2000 mercedes e 320 same situation, and how is your car running today? limp mode, dealer reset, ect, Thank you very much.

      This is the second transmission in the car. Now I have a third one. I replaced the conductor plate and changed the fluid twice but it failed again. I hope you have better luck.

    Have you done glycol test? I suspect coolant contamination into the trans fluid through the trans fluid cooler in the radiator.

      That’s a good thought. I wondered about that as well since I’m on my third transmission.
      What’s the best way to check ?

      @@brown911 I hear an easy way to test is to take a sample of fluid, put it on a hot plate, and see how the fluid reacts to high heat. If contaminated with coolant, it will start to spit and boil and make popping/sizzling sounds. If not contaminated, it will just start to smoke and eventually burn. But I recommend buying a glycol atf test kit, or buying some glycol test strips. The hotplate method isnt foolproof and if its a small leak it might only be detectable through a test kit. Solution is a new radiator. Some people just add an external trans cooler, where it will never meet engine coolant. This issue affected MANY early w211's, but I have not heard of many coolant contamination issues on the w210's, but it is still possible and worth ruling out.

    when you say reset do you mean, reset the adaptation values or just clear the errors?

      To clear the check engine light you need to clear the codes with an OBD reader.
      But it’s also a good idea to reset the shift memory in the car by using the key and pressing the pedal etc. I’ll make a video on that.

      Maybe. It depends if you have an electrical problem or if there is damage to the clutch plates. In my case the plate didn’t fix the problem. I think the fluid helped, but a few weeks later the transmission slipped again and I had a shop in Osaka put in a used transmission. Now the car has its third transmission :(

    A few days ago, my friend accidentally spilt a shake over on my W210 gearbox. Car started slipping and shaking bad & went and got stuck straight into 1st gear. Luckily i was down the street from my house and made it back but when i turned the car off. it went into limp mode 😓

      I hope you can fix it. I think your issue is totally different though. Must be electrical ?

      It will have fried the tcm computer under automatic shifter. Replacement is easy and refurbished ones online for about £100

    Hello man u know what the problem is with my mercedes benz e w210 with a om612, I dont know what gearbox it is but is automatic and it wont shift higher than second gear you can reverse and drive forward with it but it wont upshift. Do you have any idea what the problem could be?

      Hello, sorry for your problems. your situation sounds similar to mine.
      You could try to drain the pan and change 4 liters of fluid and filter and hope that it starts working. You might need to clear the code as well.

      @@diyforlife2809 after so many years they should know what cause the problem...other wise the should produce only manuals if they can't...i own w211 brand new since 2008 and i dont enjoy the car in high ways because of shaking and buzzing...

    No reset on abs. Although delete engine lite.

      Really? You don't think the ABS is functioning after I reset the lights with my OBD device?

      @@diyforlife2809 well depends on how powerful the scanner is. A basic won't go deep so the engine lite mite still stay on. I once had this problem on my S55. Need at least a bi-directional
