very knowledgeable and done with care. Unlike someone else who operated with one shaky hand and forced delicate plastic around and pretended to be an expert. A joy to watch.
If you have no leaks you can simply use a fluid extractor and pump out about 1 gallon of ATF from the dipstick hole of the transmission and replace it with equal amount of fresh ATF with no hassles. Repeat it three times after driving a little in between fluid exchanges and you replaced most of the ATF fluid by dilution quickly and easily. Do it every 4 years and it will be sufficient maintenance for the life of this transmission. You can do this from the engine bay while wearing your suit :). The cost will be ~$20/gallon per fluid exchange, if you use the fully synthetic Valvoline ATF that is approved for this transmission and works fine. My 20+ year old ML is at 250K miles and the transmission runs smoothly.

Hi there and thank you very much for this excellent video. I'm picking up a CLK 270 cdi with this 'box and as soon as I get the car I want to go through it to make sure all fluids and filters are new.
You made it look easy great video, I have an E320 which has a hydraulic knock possible from the transmission, I have changed all the motor mounts and changed the diff oil, this is my next job in the hope to solve this problem
A Very Very BIG Thank You to the person who posted this video. He actually took the time to explain every little important detail obviously from many experiences doing this maintenance. This was super helpful.
Hello . Super this video. I wonder if it is imperative to replace the electrical connector above the housing. what is this connector for? Filter? Strainer? I must make this replacement soon and I prefer to do the full drain. Do you still have the reference of your kit? Thank you and congratulations for this video !!!!
I have a 1992 300sl and I changed my transmission fluid and can’t locate the electrical connector, not sure if the transmission is a 722.6 or 722.5 are the connectors different
Hey, excellent job!!, do you think the clearance would be enough to replace the pan without raising the whole car, I mean with only jacking the front ( with both jack stands under the front doors points ) ? .
Just curious about your wheel stands. How do you get the vehicle up high enough to place those wooden wheel stands under the wheel? And what are they made of?
Hi. Just to make sure: the measuring tool doesn’t goes totally in: it goes until the tip touches the end and it remains about 300/400mm out, right? Thanks
You forgot to drain the Torque Converter which holds around 4ltrs of ATF Fluid. There should be a drain screw on TC once you rotate it by using a socket on crankshaft pulley?
They never come with dipsticks. You have to buy them externally. It was made so only mechanics at Mercedes could do the AT service, and not DIY services at home. But with the advent of Internet, all of that changed obviously.
You have left about 5 litres of dirty ATF in the torque converter; so no point putting 3.5L of new fluid into the mucky stuff is there? The old car you are working on in fact has a drain plug on the torque converter. You need to drain the 8L out. I have a R170 2000 SLK and a 208 1999CLK and have just service the 722.6 on the R170 (both have TC drain plugs)
What if it is catastrophic what if it's like worse than that as far as when you pull the dish out that has all that oil in it is that all the transmission fluid in it what's the metal parts are bigger
Thanks ! You're very good explaining and showing us what to do. No BS nor trying to show off. You are a very good and clear instructor. Congratulations😉
Thankyou for this very descriptive tutorial. I've not done a transmission service before and plan to undertake this service soon on my 2003 CL55. This is the best video I've seen on this topic. Thanks again.
The procedure is incomplete: you are not emptying the torque converter. The transmission has an opening to empty the torque converter. After you take off the protecting cap you should turn the engine until you see a screw. By taking this screw out you will empty the torque converter leaving the transmission without oil. Now you can start filling with approximately 8 liters of fresh oil.
It really depends on the maintenance history of the transmission. If it's never been serviced or hasn't been serviced in 50,000+ miles, it's a good idea to leave the torque convert alone initially. Then give it a drain and fill after five-ten thousand miles, and again after another ten-fifteen thousand miles(even these miles could vary, depending of the condition of the transmission - not necessarily necessary, it all depends). After that third drain and fill, the fluid is, in theory, 99.9% new fluid. If it's been serviced regularly, sure, replace the fluid in the torque converter, it's shouldn't cause a problem. Some grit and grime is needed when that's what the clutch pack has been running on( non-maintained transmissions or non-serviced transmissions) in order for it to continue to function properly.
Great job :-) I have a 2007 E Class 220 cdi with 300,000kms and the gearbox is slipping out of gear. I am hopeing this will fix that issue what do you think

Thankyou Sir, i do enjoy your style. I do have a question, why did you not do a full fluid change. My understanding is that the 722.6 unit takes approx 9.5 ltrs, 4-5 in the pan/filter with another 4-5 in the torque converter. Is it not pointless going through all that effort and not do the job properly 1st time round??? The only benefit i see from this procedure was 1. no chunks of metal in the pan thus showing the unit not damaged and in good health. 2. connector change as this is a known issue with this unit of transmission. 3.cleaning pan from the metal filings. You still have 4-5 ltrs of dirty fluid in the unit, so i would argue that a fluid change was not performed. Please don't take this as criticism, i thank you for your efforts in producing these videos for mugs like me.... Regards kelly
