One of my most favorite franchises , i was a kid when Codename 47 released and that's how my relationship with Hitman started. It's just full of Nostalgia for me. My favorie Hitman was (and still is) Contracts i just love the Dark Atmosphere in contracts.
Back when the franchise had a character of its own. Hitman Codename 47 - Blood Money was when the game was at its best. Not entierly sure why they basically abandoned that concept.
Elias Nicolas Miranda what I heard was that they didn’t even bother asking him if he wanted to continue making music for the new games they just hired some random total disrespect
As others has said, Hitman: Codename 47 to Hitman: Blood Money use Glacier 1. G1 was also used for Freedom Fighters, K&L and Mini Ninjas. Glacier 2 was in development from 2006 to 2012 when it was used for Absolution. It's now getting updated with each new game (HITMAN 2016 and HITMAN 2).
I love the game how it is! Human shielding is for escalating an already bad situation to worse. The game designers want to focus on deescalating situations. They have said so. Same with first person. The only purpose it would serve would be for combat situations and they are focusing on the social stealth and NPC manipulation aspects of gameplay. In addition, the level of detail needed on every in game object would have to double to stand up to being viewed first person.
I agree - now that they have basically nailed the core stealth elements, adding in First Person and Human Shield as options in your toolkit could only be a good thing. Particularly would be great if you can execute from human shield with your gun to their head or a knife into their neck.
Human shield was useless. And I agree while 1st-person view is fun but its functionality is very limited. Its peripheral vision view on the side is very narrow so when you switch to 1st-person view, you can't see any of the surrounding environment that it really sucks when you are trying to complete a mission.
Watch any speedrun of HBM ever. The human shield was most definitely NOT useless, it was actually one of the most OP maneuvers in the game. A skilled player could save their Silent Assassin rating after being detected by disarming guards, taking them hostage and throwing them over a railing to cause "accidents" rather than kills.
@Big D Killa who cares, they decide to use the same name, whats the problem, if the game was called Agent 46 would you have been happy? If they remake missions from the past Hitman games then they should be: 1.Traditions of the Trade 2. Beldingford Manor 3. The Murder of Crows 4. Curtains Down 5. A New Life 6. The Meat King's Party 7. You Better Watch Out And The House of Cards But this is just my opinion
I started playing Hitman when Silent Assassin came out. I was hooked ever since. This series doesn’t get enough credit because Hitman is legit one of the greatest games in our life time
@@BlatentlyFakeName i always felt like hitman 2 SA was the hardest, blood money in short is the pinnacle of hitman games, even today i still feel it has more replay ability than any of them. its just fun! lol but me playing hitman codename 47 when i was around 7 or 8 was a game changer for me, one of the first games i broke sleep schedule to play all night, i even pissed myself because i didnt want to go to the bathroom, of course there was immediate regret, but i vividly remember deciding and telling my parents i wanted all the hitman games after that and even ending up getting blood money pretty quickly after it came out, my first youtube video was me speedrunning blood money with a crappy camera recording my tv back when most youtube intros had the same outlay, with let the bodies hit the floor playing. absolution wasnt bad just really different but the gameplay was pretty smooth, contracts on absolution is really what made absolution great imo, but the story seemed extremely out of place for a hitman game. it didnt really bother me i was just happy they made another hitman game even tho i felt like they really downplayed 47 with the story. the only problem i have with 2016 trilogy, is the rating system, but i understand they did that to promote replay ability, im just a perfectionist when it comes to hitman, i want to play it SA suit only, even tho it really effects how much xp you get because they want you to do mission stories. blood money really set the bar with how much an expert 47 is.
Absolution is a masterpiece. Call it another name than ''hitman'' so that people dont complain about the mechanics and its one of the best videogame ever. Way more realistic than kill everyone challenge.
I honestly don't understand why absolution gets so much hate. I guess the direction it took seemed unwelcoming back then simply because there wasn't so much of hitman out there but if you're playing it today it seems like a refreshing detour in an otherwise extremely similar series of games. The only issue with the gameplay is the need for 'instinct' imo, otherwise it's a fine game on it's own.
Blood Money is up there in one of my favorite games. Such a variety in level design. Lot's of unique ways to make "accidents" happen. Swapping a pistol in the opera to have the actor shoot your target. I haven't played the newest ones yet.

All 3 are Hitman Absolution for me. People complain that Absolution is too linear, but even Hitman 2 boils down to a limited sandbox, most of which is highlighted to you in your instinct vision anyway! Absolution at least gives you better movement and skills to not only traverse the level better than any other game in the series, but also deal with enemies should things not go according to plan :)
@@prabhdeep8947 ummm.... The old Hitman games did not have a story. It was like a contract which was to be completed. This was the only game to have a story which, BTW, I loved it.
I've been playing Hitman since the very beginning. Only recently ago I bought me a PS4 just to play Hitman 2 because it was cheaper than to upgrade my PC. It was worth it. I absolutely love it! I'd love to see the newspaper reports of Blood Money at the end of every mission to make a come back. It was fun to read and it reflected how well or poorly you did because the journalists would be able to pick up testimonies of witnesses and begin working on possible portrait sketches of the killer. Bring the newspaper back please!
Hitman for some reason always felt like a game made by true professionals. It runs well, looks great, feels great, and has the least bugs out of any game I've played (only had 1 crash in the Christmas party level in Blood Money, and that's it) + UI is always clean
Bugs where the reason why i stopped playing Blood Money. That game got worse and worse with each mission. So many sound bugs and freezes. And i was playing the Trilogy for 360 on X Box One, where that shouldn't happen. If it wouldn't been so bug infested, i would like it way more.
Who needs RTX when Hitman is rocking reflections since 2000 .... Hitman 2016 and 2018 have some really good mirror reflections , totally clean and reflects almost everything
I mean they're used far more sparingly than RTX is (where it applies to every reflective surface - even rough ones) - but yeah the secondary camera implementation of reflections for mirrors and flat glass is neat, and really adds to the games. Unfortunately because of how it works it comes with a very heavy performance cost, and can't be used for anything rough or curved
I love the dedication IO has for Hitman. I was on the fence after Absolution but their perceverence through their hardships should be inspiring for video game developers.
You forgot to mention how the ballistics of Contracts were greatly improved. In one and two, bullets were kind of slow. In Contracts it was much more realistic, and gun battles even left behind clouds of gunsmoke. Great video!
Just found your channel, Nick. Have to say you've quickly become one of my favourites. I love all the details in your vids and doing my favourite video game series (HiTMAN) justice with this vid has earned you a sub.
Hey man, great video! I am 47 years old... No pun intended LOL... And I've been playing Hitman ever since it was first released on PC. And I have been loving them ever since. Just bought Hitman 2 and can barely set it down to make this post and watch this video.
It's not that Absolution wasn't a good game, it just wasn't a particularly good HITMAN game. They threw out too much of the core gameplay elements in their attempt to make the narrative compelling.
Absolution also introduced a custom contracts mode, basically a challenge mode where you can design your own contract and try to beat your friends' scores. One of the best and most overlooked aspect in the series.
Remember when GTa5 came out, everybody was like “wish we had more heist missions” Hitman 1,2,3 are basically what GTA is supposed to be - a real crime simulator with complex AI!
A developer once confirmed that he still has a model of 47 with hair, what he was supposed to look like originally, here is a fun fact: his face is actually modeled after the voice actor David Bateson.
I've found it so confusing when series that I've never heard of before like Hitman or God of War release a title named after the series with no number on it and no subtitle, so it looks like they're the first game in the series, but then people online are talking about previous games. So, it's definitely nice to get a video like this explaining the history of it all. I picked up Hitman 2 after seeing folks play it online and man was it worth it. _Awesome_ game, and I hope that IO Interactive gives us more Hitman games for years to come - though they could go a _long_ way simply adding more levels and challenges to Hitman 2, which they do seem to be doing.
My love for this franchise started on the PS2.. the old hitman2. I was awful at the stealth aspect, but I loved replaying levels and just going full commando. Then after that I played blood money, wherein the stealth mechanics were way more forgiving, contracts and absolution further fueled my love for the series. As of today i have hitman3 with 2&1 loaded inside of it, play frequently and still can't get enough of challenging myself to do things in bizarre fashions 😁 Roll on hitman 4,5 & forever! 🤣
Oddly enough, absolution is my favorite hitman game, i personally loved how story driven it was, makea us feel closer to the characters like 47 himself
I personally loved Hitman Absolution. I thought it was the Hitman movie that we always deserved, except you were controlling 47. To top it off it had an amazing soundtrack, definitely helped bring the cutscenes into the cinematic atmosphere.
the whole story made no sense though, hitman read a letter right after killing Diana, only to then go off asking "Birdie" questions which the letter already answered. Then the cowboy comes out of nowhere, who had nothing to do with the beginning of the story and becomes the main villain for pretty much the entire game. Then at the end, Victoria throws away the necklace which has until that point been shown to be necessary for keeping her alive. It's like they weren't really sure what they were doing with the story... even though it was meant to be a story driven game
@@Mr47steam You are right about their being issues with the plot. Don't even get me started on Birdie. Dexter is definitely thrown into the story awkwardly at the start, but I do think he is an awesome villain and the voice actor did an excellent job bringing the character to life. I think the story gets pretty good once Birdie is mostly out of the picture, the Nuns get massacred, and Victoria is kidnapped. No matter how cocky and wealthy Dexter is, we, 47 know that we will put a bullet in his head. I never understood Victoria throwing the necklace away at the end...
I actually didn't mind the story in Hitman 2016. Its rather complex but that adds to the value of additional playthroughs. Its also interesting learning more about the story depending on what route you take to complete a mission or listening to NPC conversations.
I am surprised the music (Especially the Jesper Kyd scores) werent even mentioned... To my knowledge Silent Assassin still ranks as one of the best game scores ever composed.
I was really sad to see the them abandoning the Absolution sequel, the story ended at a really interesting cliffhanger and I am still mad that we will never get to see a satisfying conclusion to the story.... IDK why ppl were bitter about Absolution, even though Hitman reboot is amazing, it still lacked story... Absolution had story along with gameplay, just a little bit restrictive and served narrative, nothing catastrophically bad, EA and Activision franchises have done much much worse and are still continuing... IO should have at least concluded the story....
@@idiot_city5444 No its not... Absolution is a story in itself... WoA trilogy is a reboot to the franchise... hitman will always be my favorite stealth series, ive played a few stealth games like sniper elite and splinter cell but hitman is by far the best imo just because they make the enviroment feel so alive like how in blood money you could dance with the people or in absolution where you can be the judge in that court mission, it's just so good
I really wish they'd bring back the Instinct slow-time mark-your-targets shooting mode from Absolution. The aiming mechanics could definitely use some work.
Awesome retrospective. I think you missed out on one of the big aspects of the "Greatest Hits" nature of Contracts though. For many players, our first introduction to the series was Silent Assassin. Console players like myself who had not had the opportunity to play the original game got to experience the best of the missions from Codename 47, and fill in the backstory that was essentially skipped at the beginning of Silent Assassin. That they managed to do this while adding enough new features and content to make it a rewarding experience for returning players was a masterful move in my opinion.
It's a common complaint in reviews for contracts. Regardless of whether you played the original or not, the game's narrative wasn't the same quality as the past two titles. It was just the hitman 2 engine with remade levels and a few new ones.
True enough. Definitely a double-edged sword. I still think it was a lot cooler than a simple console port of Codename 47 would have been. The new levels were excellent, and the remastered levels really benefited from the improved gameplay mechanics. Like you mentioned in the video, balancing the series signature sandbox gameplay with a compelling narrative has always been a struggle.

11:27 isnt it crazy how we had realtime 1:1 perfect reflections in old 2000's games, even as far back as Unreal Tournament. Yet now, today with all our hardware, we require RTX just to do a mirror in modern games. What happened? Why? How did we lose the ability to do reflections in the past 10 years before RTX? That always seemed so strange to me. I mean how even a game like Star Citizen cant do mirrors, but old Unreal Tournament could.
Reflections in hitman are not done the same way. Old games often duplicate the scene, forcing your machine to render two characters, in this case.. agent 47, along with the most basic object models and textures to give an illusion. Real time ray tracing isnt making duplicate worlds on the other side of walls. Its actually properly showing how light bounces off of material objects, often resulting in a reflection. Its simulating how TRUE reflections work.. not faking it. You can easily fake one or two mirrors in a game level.. but to have reflections like that all over a game world, from car windows to puddles on the street using the old method would be impossible.. thered be hundreds to thousands of agent 47 running around... WAY too time consuming and hardware intensive
I went to my local Xtra Vision store years ago looking for a game to rent out. I picked Hitman Blood Money and I’ve stayed loyal to the franchise ever since.

Idc what anyone says Absolution was a blast to play. A nice spinoff of the franchises usual playstyle. Though it was more linear the textures and level design felt more detailed to me at least. I miss Jesper kyd's music in the Hitman games D:
well it was his decision that he don't want to do music anymore
we can't do nothing
@@eliasnicolasmiranda4940 I don't think this is true. He still makes music for games. In 2018 he worked for Warhammer and State of Decay II.
Elias Nicolas Miranda what I heard was that they didn’t even bother asking him if he wanted to continue making music for the new games they just hired some random total disrespect
Austin D Artistic choices aren’t disrespect. The new look and theme Hitman has had for two games in no way fits his music.
Track name from 0:53? Thanks
agent 47 was now able of crouching xD xD , just imagine how much training he would have to go through in order to acquire such a magnificent skill
So Hitman uses a 20 year old engine. Looks and runs great. Bethesda uses a 20 year old engine. Looks and runs like shit.
because bethesda are lazy as fuck making shitty cash grabs
cant really even compare the engines considering they both aim for completely different goals
The ones from 2000-2006 use a 20 year old engine. The latest ones use up-to-date engines
Bethesda engine still can't use ladders or climb walls properly. Let that sink in for a moment.
What in the hell would a "Hitman: Endless Runner" look like... wtf..
My thought exactly
Gotta go fast 😂
Hitman endless pants stealer.
Like Husain Bolt 😂😂
Endlessly traveling around the world to eliminate targets
They should’ve kept the human shield
Also First Person View And the elevators in the buildings!
Absolution’s color pallet was incredible.
@Big D Killa you hitman fans dont like games with an actual story uh?
@Big D Killa its called do something different, a franchise need this sometimes or people get bored for the same game all over and over
@Big D Killa who cares, they decide to use the same name, whats the problem, if the game was called Agent 46 would you have been happy?
They want to do something different and it works, the game sells well and it was good, all like it except half of the purist fans, the heavy fandom dont mean anything because they dont like nothing most of the time
@@Spillow-C I actually liked Absolution, but what makes me hate it is that after you reload a checkpoint, literally everything you set up is also reset prior to the checkpoint
@@Spillow-C Yes a game needs to change and evolve to keep it interesting but the problem is when you change too much and that is what absolution did it ruined the missions and the disguises among other things which are the 2 most important parts of hitman. Its like having call of duty go to a open world rpg in 3rd person yes its still called cod but it isn't what cod is in design.
As a game developer you want to make you core fanbase happy because they are the ones who buy and play your games but when you forget about your fanbase and try to go mainstream like absolution it upsets the fanbase that is passionate about your games and then you end up with a bunch of new people who don't even know what hitman is
I enjoyed listening to the history of Hitman, brought back many nostalgic moments! Great Job!!
If they remake missions from the past Hitman games then they should be:
1.Traditions of the Trade
2. Beldingford Manor
3. The Murder of Crows
4. Curtains Down
5. A New Life
6. The Meat King's Party
7. You Better Watch Out
And The House of Cards
But this is just my opinion
In Hitman 2 they reintroduced the Delgado drug cartel. A Vintage Year should be n that list.
Basement Killing
Whittleton creek is kinda like a new life
The lee Hong assassination and deadly cargo as well
The death of Hannelore
I started playing Hitman when Silent Assassin came out. I was hooked ever since. This series doesn’t get enough credit because Hitman is legit one of the greatest games in our life time
Finally! a History of Hitman with narration!
I loved Absolution. It was my first Hitman game, but the story was amazing. And to me it felt good and fun.
same
Blood Money is the best one. The first few games are also by far the most difficult, especially the first.
Blood money imo has the most memorable maps. Silent Assassin had way too many maps I got annoyed of like the Japanese missions.
Absolution is a masterpiece. Call it another name than ''hitman'' so that people dont complain about the mechanics and its one of the best videogame ever. Way more realistic than kill everyone challenge.
Been playing these games my entire life and to this day. I love all these games. Including Absolution.
I like absolution too
@@wraith7657 I love Absolution too. The most slept on game ever.
Newest ones are basically Blood Money 2.0
You are gonna love them a lot.
It's great to see Kermit the frog has found a new passion since the Muppets seems to have fizzled out. Well done bud.

Hitman absolution is the best hitman game I know I know it’s an old game from 2012 and I’m not trying to be old but still my favorite of all time
The coin distraction thing always makes me laugh. *Throws coin in a loud, thumping Berlin nightclub* Guard: "HUH!?!?!"
Probably nothing but I’ll check it out lmao they always say that
In my experience with the game, if you throw a coin in a noisy environment it has no effect.
@@Anarcho-SyndicalisticSaboteur for me that happened only with Hitman 2 from 2002, Blood Money runs fine in every mission on pc
Absolution was my first game, and Suit Only without being noticed was THE WAY to make the levels fun.
I got addicted to that playstyle.
That club mission, sometimes I'd just go full rambo, it would be hard on my gpu and full of smoke by the end of the gunfights lol

Hitman 2 Silent Assassin is my favourite. I loved the shed where you built up your weapon selection. Hope they bring that mechanic back.
Absolution also introduced a custom contracts mode, basically a challenge mode where you can design your own contract and try to beat your friends' scores. One of the best and most overlooked aspect in the series.

this video was a rollercoaster of emotions im happy to have been on
I've found it so confusing when series that I've never heard of before like Hitman or God of War release a title named after the series with no number on it and no subtitle, so it looks like they're the first game in the series, but then people online are talking about previous games.
Blood money still looks good. Can't believe it was released at 2006. Impressive.
My love for this franchise started on the PS2.. the old hitman2.
I was awful at the stealth aspect, but I loved replaying levels and just going full commando.
Then after that I played blood money, wherein the stealth mechanics were way more forgiving, contracts and absolution further fueled my love for the series.
As of today i have hitman3 with 2&1 loaded inside of it, play frequently and still can't get enough of challenging myself to do things in bizarre fashions 😁
Roll on hitman 4,5 & forever! 🤣
I was in my teens when Hitman came out. It and Max Payne were so awesome and different.
Oddly enough, absolution is my favorite hitman game, i personally loved how story driven it was, makea us feel closer to the characters like 47 himself
agree

I was today years old when I learnt why agent 47 is bald
