Not gonna lie this are my favorite videos on the channel, its a shame you don't get more recognition for your work, I enjoy those quality documentaries. Thank you for the work and passion you put in!
As a huge Bioshock fan who has played every single game and all the expansions, I can say this is probably the most comprehensive Bioshock video on UA-cam. Thanks!
I agree! Also I don't know how you can make a Bioshock Video (all 3 games in one for that matter) and not give a single significant spoiler. Hats off for that, Lord knows I couldn't do that.
I would give anything to forget my Bioshock experience so I could relive it again. Love it so much, each game has its own appeal. Thank you for this video mate!
a brick bah! no need for that! I've discovered a new plasmid called "Brain Wipe" that should do the trick! ... now where did I put that ... ahhh now I raise my hand and gesture like this and .... no it's not supposed to do that? arrrrghhh!!!! ... wait, wait I can ... I can ... erm.... who am I? who are you people? what am I doing here??? Bio-what????
Bioshock is one of my top three favorite video game series of all time. The decision aspect of whether to rescue or harvest(murder) the little sisters resonates with me hugely as well. I played the first game at it's release and being a gamer thought, "oh more, Adam, I should harvest them all." By the release of the second game I had become a father with a daughter. You really get an understanding of what your actions are when you have perspective, especially(though considered a worse game) had a better aspect of the Little sister's perspective of you. I rescued every single little sister in the second game and they saw me as a savior and protector, much like a Big Daddy(hint hint), and at that time in games was pretty big for characterization of NPCs. Also, though most people disliked it, I loved the multiplayer in 2. It was very akin to Left4Dead multiplayer and was fun. I will admit that Bioshock 3 was imo the weakest of the 3, it was still a great game. The entire series was built around Rapture and the people that inhabited it, and the fact they were able to build an entire new culture, setting, community, and all else years before the original is very impressive. Also gives us a look into what happened when rapture fell in the DLC.
@@MauiWowieOwie - I guess. I try to be a good person. I just remember playing the game feeling like there's no way that I couldn't do anything but rescue them. I went about 15 years without playing any games and Bioshock was one of the first I played. I couldn't believe the advancements. I've been obsessively playing them ever since. Sorry to ramble on. Are you excited for the new Bioshock?
2 is a personal favorite, mainly being able to play as the series's mascot, a Big Daddy. The sheer power behind it was fun and using the drill was exciting.
I also like 2 a lot. Some people were critizing the game harshly and I don't know why. I think it was a fantastic sequel and I also liked playing as the Big Daddy. The Relationship between him and his lil Sis Eleanor was super interesting and heartbreaking. I would still say I like the first BIoshock a lil bit more but they are both pretty much on the same level imo.
For me, 2 is the objective best as in it has everything that made the first one great, but also improves on the clunkiness and overall gameplay. BUT, 1 will remain my all time favorite, because without it, there wouldn't even be a Bioshock 2. It was more innovative, and an overall greater surprise because I didn't really expect it to be THAT great, whereas I had very high expectations of Bioshock 2 because of the first one.
2 was always my favorite as well. It improved upon Bioshock 1 but didn't change it to the point of weighing it down like they did with Infinite (in my opinion, at least)
"was" as in.. nothing came close when it came out... NOW.. there are many games that are better looking at max settings and textures are, if you look, noticibly low/dated in this time
Bioshock Infinite takes you there for a short while... and as Nick930 says the Burial At Sea Add-on takes you there for longer. Always wished for more, though.
One of my favorite franchises of all time. There has never been anything as incredible as bioshock. im unsure if anything will ever be as incredible ever again.

I am so glad Ken never gave up. Bioshock is my favorite game series of all time. I have a framed painting of a big daddy and little sister in rapture and a portrait of Elizabeth a friend painted for me hanging in my room.
Great story for sure. I like the rumors that started to spawn on the internet regarding the Songbird audio being hidden in the original 2007 game. Definitely not true - but fun nonetheless
Bioshock is the most beautiful piece of art ive ever witnessed. I see alot of people saying theyd love to forget the game and play it with a fresh mind. This is so true, but honestly i still get the feels every playthrough. I try to play the full series including burial at sea every year. I cant stress enough how important burial at sea was. I cry almost everytime i finish. This is such a special game and i highly doubt ill ever experience a piece of entertainment that resonates so deeply with me. I will give the recent game Horizon Zero Dawn a thumbs up for narrative though and I cant wait to see how it goes. Id love to see a new Bioshock but I also believe Ken Levine told his story. I dont want the reputation tarnished in order to make sales or qualm fans need for another game.
This is so true. People want a movie, but imagine how trash that would be. People want rapture back but it would not be appreciated. Its hard to please all fans. That why i would wish the series would be laid to rest
Young me didn't realize Andrew Ryan == Ayn Rand. Looking back, the themes, the aesthetic, the philosophy were all perfectly chosen for the story they were telling. Brilliant.
Michael Fazio I’ve been having strange coincidences lately and I’ve been really looking into ayn Rand and the relation to bioshock and I was intrigued by this individual’s comment and alas there we have another coincidence, finding someone with the same last name.
@@Nile8765 Ayn Rand was a famous author. She believed that some people were better than others, and that you could tell who the best people were by how much money they had. She wrote about these beliefs and built a whole philosophy around them, which she called objectivism. Rich people love objectivism and Ayn Rand to this day, because it lets them feel better about being rich, even if they hurt other people to become rich. Of course, objectivism is a terrible philosophy in the real world, because it results in rich people stealing from the poor until the poor have nothing left, so the rich have to turn on each other to get richer. Despite this, many rich people (and people who wish they were rich) say that Ayn Rand's best book, Atlas Shrugged, shows why objectivism is the best philosophy. The plot of Bioshock is actually really similar to the plot of Atlas Shrugged, but in Bioshock, everything collapses when the lower class is exploited too much and the upper class starts turning on each other. Bioshock is actually a story that argues against the points made by Atlas Shrugged, showing how if you let the story of rich people founding their own unregulated civilization play out, it eventually can end very badly for everyone involved.
I would literally watch any Bioshock documentary : a 6 hour run down of why they chose the plane they did for the opening scene, the science behind creating Andrew Ryan's mustache, literally anything. That said... a documentary of the HISTORY of Bioshock : sign me up! Thank you for this, it was awesome! 👍
Tyler Handke You can start by reading “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand. You’ll find many of the characters an themes there... even a few of the objects and play on names. (Ayn Rand/Andrew Ryan?)
Tyler Handke If you're the type of person who likes to revisit audio logs or in-game dialouge outside the game, then there's a full chronology of events and audio logs of the entire series (Starting with before the events of Infinite, specifically when Booker as well as Rosalind Lutece were born) made by MysterMachineX and it's over 15 hours long. Seems way too long, but to me, it served as the ultimate analysis of the franchise, without going into depth in terms of symbology and references of the games as well as inspirations/parallel's of Ayn Rand books. The 14 part chronology is a huge narrative journey, and after having seen it all, everything that was once hard to understand or hard to piece together, becomes clear as day. It's not perfect however, one of the commentators can be a little hard to understand and some of the footage for in-game dialouge can be a little bit messy at times. But still, with that said, i do not regret the long journey of over 15 hours, and would even watch it again at some point. I cannot overstate more, how much i reccomend watching the whole thing XD
@@honkandursun9402 Yeah, it just goes to show how much there is to piece together. It would be even longer, if it contained all the minor dialogue in Infinite (Elizabeth reacting to certain things for example), but it didn't feel like it left anything out of importance.
Permanently subscribing to your channel because after scrounging most of UA-cam I discovered that only YOU make the most comprehensive documentaries on huge videogame franchsises with the proper in-depth research to back it all up. Keep it up Nick!
Yes, however Levine is not a part of the development and 2K has hinted that they plan on implementing a "Games as a Service" model to the endgame content, so don't get your hopes too high. I would approach the next game in the series skeptically if I were you.
I saw this just earlier this week! I'm both excited and hesitant.... I loved the earlier titles, but Infinite was so bad (in my mind) as to have poisoned the series for me... so I'm going to be REALLY cautious about purchasing it or not.
System shock deserve so much more love, it's one of the best game franchises anyone could ever play. it helped introduce a whole bunch of mechanics we still use too this day.
I haven't played the first System Shock game yet, but i've played System Shock 2 several playthroughs for the first time lately- And it's a fucking masterpiece, just like the Bioshock games, but more like a survival horror esque approach to the gameplay and narrative.
honestly the only problem is the limitations of being the first to do things and being so innovative makes it look and feel less put together and more experimental meanwhile I have no reservations about playing something more traditional and polished platformer released the same year, Earthworm Jim. And 2 may be later but still looks grimy and undetailed but not in the lore-steeped way of the first Bioshock. I think I will probably be playing both of them in the future, though. my boyfriend has been begging me to get him SS 2.
A lot of people do this. This claustrophobic atmosphere combined with the horror elements and the beautiful art design of Rapture made it so unique. It is also crazy that Rapture nonetheless felt more open as Columbia, a city in the clouds. Infinite was just to linear for being a Bishock Game and the Gameplay was to CoD Like for the franchise, too.
Rapture was beautiful and unique but Infinite was cool in it's own way. I love how it builds this uncanny feeling by using familiar imagery, familiar music, and the most familiar color scheme to English-speaking countries, but then immediately under the surface of all this familiarity is this gross and terrifying world. I imagine if somebody from the 20's went to Rapture, they would see it in the same unsettling way Americans see Colombia.
I never found gameplay to be very important to the series. The visuals are certainly great and probably would have been improvised based on the demos, but almost every game is like that anyway. The story was the core of those games with the characters and complexity in the plot for me and I think it excels in that area enormously.
@@maxjones503 it's more the issue that the demos promised some really inventive ways to interact with the environment/Elizabeth. The finished game had infinite parallel universes of skyhooks. I still have an unhealthy love for the game, but man, what could have been!
Max Jones Seriously? Gameplay was always the focus here, why do you think the first two games have so many options to tackle enemies and a healthy variety of weapons and tools. Bioshock Infinite followed the trends of that time and was a mediocre experience for it. Bioshock 1 and 2 were their own experience. Infinite simply copied other games. A bit of an ironic ending for the franchise
What Lavine said about only having two weapons in Infinite was wrong! People would be less likely to use other weapons if they have to drop the ones they like.. That exactly how i felt in Infinite! I think it was another reason they didnt have that feature and he just didnt want to say it.
Another great documentary, Nick. I was unsure whether to watch it, because I only played half of the original Bioshock and I've recently started Bioshock Infinite. Thank you for providing a spoiler-free, well-documented overview of the franchise!
This is my favorite one of your documentaries. I think it's fair to say most of your viewers have already played these games, and already know all the mechanics. But what we don't know is all the history around the developers and the companies/properties that get passed around. I really enjoyed seeing a bigger focus on that in this video.
best game franchise ever, i've been emotional over the announcement for a new game all day. thanks for this, listening to BioShock summaries and essays are my favorite past time!! Great work :)
Hey man, haven't even finished the video but I can tell you did your research and put a lot of love and care into this video. It's very frustrating to see videos about Bioshock and its roots get even the simplest details wrong, and not even go back to correct it. Big ups my man. I'm a huge fan of all the shock games and you've definitely done them justice with this here video.
I've watched alot of bioshock story videos, but this is the best one I've seen. I even learned thing about the development even though I though I already knew everything to know about bioshock. Great video!
Man, I discovered your channel like 3 or 4 days ago and I've been binge watching all of these "history of" videos. They are all so incredibly well made and researched! I appreciate all the effort and time you put into these over the years!! I still have so many to go and I'm excited to watch all of them. You've really hit a lot of nostalgia feels for me and I love knowing the details about the development process and more that I never considered! Thanks again and Happy new year!
while bioshock 1 is a great game, i found bioshock 2 to be my favorite in the series! it doesn't get as much love as the first one, but i feel like it had a lot of story, the gameplay was also so fun, and i loved the in depth relationship between the big daddies and little sisters.
It's hard for me to choose between 1 or 2, even though they are similar they both have their own uniqueness to them. People say the 2 game is the worst, but I beg to differ. The gameplay is top notch, the characters are interesting and engaging and gave different perspectives of the beliefs and ideology of the antagonists and how it effected society around them. It was interesting two different perspectives. Bioshock infinite was my least favorite. It felt too on rails, kinda convoluted story and underwhelming gameplay. Still enjoyed it though for what it was. I think if they waited a generation to put on more powerful consoles it would have been better. The trailer seemed a bit to ambitious for the consoles of the time.
it's not in-depth LOL the relationship and the characters involved never change as you play through the story you're literally just trying to meet her because it's your duty there's no ambiguity or secrets revealed to actually make you care about her as a person like Elizabeth in infinite. It's not like you actually spend any time in the game with her and she never helps you in combat like Elizabeth either
You don't know what your missing on. And the first BioShock aged well, meaning, the graphics are still there, even for its age, the core mechanic is there too. For me the first one was the best and it was one of those games I was hooked until I finished it pretty much like Dead Space, and a few other amazing titles back in that time. Xbox 360 and ps3 were the grand jewels of gaming era, so much diversity and less bugs than there are now. Now it's a total mess
Dude, not gonna lie, this is a must play. The first game is probably in my top 5 of all time. When I first started it, I didn't put down the controller until I finished it. Litterally hooked me up so much that I had played it in one go. The only thing I hope is that you didn't get it spoiled for you, cause that could ruin the experience. Other than that, I cannot recommend it more. It's clearly one of the greatest video game of all time.
Bioshock 1 is an amazing entry to a franchise. Bioshock 2 is my personal favorite to play in the franchise Bioshock Infinite Takes a spin of the atmosphere and ideology, and makes a more Narrative driven approach to storytelling, rather than story through subtext. Infinite's DLC Burial at Sea Episode 1&2 may be the weakest links, in terms of gameplay, but it's narrative and exposition is perhaps the strongest in the series, in my opinion.. And if not that, Burial at Sea Episode 1&2 is definitely the saddest experience i've ever had with a game.
@@etshArk87 I played through Dead Space 1 and 2 and now i'm starting with Bioshock again (ignoring DS3 and Infinite, both sucked). I can't agree more! Titles of that era are absolutely the best. Since 2014 it's more and more going down. In the last 9 years there is no game i really enjoyed as much as the old games. Mobile games, Fortnite, laziness and greed destroyed gaming. Hope it will have a return one day ...
This was a perfect history. Bioshock is the poster example of what videogames as an art medium can achieve. As an art historian I've used the first two games countless times as such, often to show where innovation in mediums is occuring. Paint, statuary and theatre for example, were once all novel ideas to be perfected. I truly believe Bioshock is a masterwork on level ground with any other masterpiece in any other medium. I play the first two once a year around New year's every year since they came out and still find myself itching in June to get back to Rapture. The importance and beauty of these stories is something everyone should experience and furthermore cherish because these are the proverbial Rembrandt's of the future. Thank you for the video and keeping this art relevant and present!
God yes!!!!!!!! I just replayed all of them this year. My interest in the franchise 12 years later was tenfold and I consumed everything I could after finishing the 3rd. Thanks for giving me more to consume Nick!
Great job going back to cover the old Looking Glass games like Ultima Underworld and System Shock, those games were mindblowing at the time. Was a really fond surprise to see them pop up here
when that music starts, ooh I can't help but smile! its such a nostalgia hit and good memories. This is a really great video and I had a lot of fun watching it!
Great video. It was good to see a Bioshock retrospective that had concept art and beta gameplay I hadn't seen before. And I'm glad to see there are others out there that appreciate Bioshock 2 as much as I did. It's often overlooked and disregarded, but it's far more memorable an experience than it's given credit for. Not to mention even those that don't like Bioshock 2 as much still praise the Minerva's Den DLC.
I still remember playing Bioshock in 2008. Blew my mind. 2008 was a helluva year. Bioshock, Fallout 3, and Deadspace...and others. But those 3 games cemented the idea that Video Games were the best medium for story telling. It had the detailed story telling of a novel with narration, audio logs/ diaries, and the cinematography of a movie all while being interactive. The city of Rapture is alive, it in itself is a character. There is always a special place in my heart for the city of Rapture. All three games were great. As a follow up to the series, that's tough... I would like to start off during the golden age of the city and experience the civil war. But that maybe to much like the 3rd game (Infinite). Or maybe years after Bioshock 2, which I believe took place in the late 60's, 67? And the city is being rebuilt, time frame around the 80's. Still dealing splicers and some other private company trying to exploit/ takeover Rapture. So.. maybe you're defending rapture from a hostile takeover versus in the past where you're trying to tear it apart.
dude, i love Bioshock 1 but Infinite is still my favorite. Booker, the setting, the American Imperalism and old American Excepsionalism themes, story, gameplay is pretty solid, and twist with Elizabeth are all awesome
The perks of being a PlayStation plus member. Got to love it. BioShock collection was the free game of the month for February. Reliving one of the best games ever. I really hope they make another one
So much detail in all your videos! Really enjoyed this video! Love BioShock and the amount of research you clearly show in your videos... deserve all the success you get from doing these ❤
Hey Man, i came here after I read one of your comments in IGN comment section of the new bioshock game announcement. Congratulations on your work, Very high quality in all contents. Nice introduction on the games that influenced the franchise. Sorry for bad english. I intend on viewing your other "history of..." Videos. Keep on the great job!
One of the best videos ever seen about bioshock. This video made me play the game again. Thanks i cant imagin how much work you put in for this amazing doc. GG man!
9:35 What is it with incredible, innovative, critically well-received immersive-sim games and not selling well? It's almost a good sign at this point, I get like "Wow, that niche, themed single-player game didn't really make headlines, it must be worth checking out"
Love Bioshock and loved this video. I thought you did a great job of covering the games, bioshock 1 2 and infinite are some of my favourite games. Thank you for the video!
I love these long and in depth game documentaries you're doing! I especially loved the tomb raider one, and i got pretty excited when i saw this one in my feed! Hugs and thanks to you Nick
*Such a great series..I remember seeing the trailer for the first Bioshock and I was intrigued. And when the game got released I was NOT disappointed it holds up still today...and I still play it every few years its such a great game* *Great doc, great production values....must of eaten up some hours making this...thank!*
I was just too disappointed to know the remastered collection didn’t feature mp. Not important at all but was a very fun addition when single player grew stale from hours of playing
Bioshock MP was very unique and a lot of fun! I'll never forget it. Unfortunately it became "popular to hate mp in any game" around that time and people would label Bioshock MP as garbage simply for existing. A shame, really.
There was certainly some hubris and flaw in some of Andrew Ryan's ideology. But his general philosophy had some very strong points too. The narrator in this video keeps repeating how the fall of rapture was due to Ryan's ideology but the truth is we don't REALLY know that. It was Fontaine and his utilization of Tannenbaum's discovery of ADAM that, as "Atlas" himself put it: "changed everything." We know that Ryan's society was generally successful until the madness began to set in. I wonder how different things would have been if Fontaine and the smugglers had just left Rapture alone and plasmids never came into being. It makes me think of Madara in Naruto, in that we never REALLY got to see if his philosophy would have worked or not, because it was inevitably usurped by Kaguya and the lies spread by black zetsu. I feel the same way about Andrew Ryan. We never REALLY got to see if his experiment worked or not because it was inevitably undermined by the very parasites he sought to escape from, Fontaine being the epitome of parasites even during his time on the surface. Perhaps the only real lesson to take away from Bioshock is that no matter where you go or what you do, no amount of ideology will ever give birth to true utopia. That the nature of things is best left alone to fluctuate as it pleases. That to try and force the pendulum to only swing one way is to defy the nature of things and always lead to ruin. Because there will always be some "parasite" who emerges to screw it all up. No matter the degree of order, chaos will always emerge. Whether you rise high above the clouds, or sink to the bottom of the sea... Light will always inevitably cast a shadow.
my all time favorite series of games, i hope theres more in store for rapture, the eerie, slightly scary old-school environment of the BEST underground city.. actually makes me want to reinstall and play it again lol.
Nicely done. I learned a fair bit about what was happening behind the scenes at the studios developing these games. The original Bioshock set the bar high, but I think my personal favorite is Bioshock Infinite, because of how it introduced and handled the concepts of the quantum mechanics, rifts in spacetime and the multiverse. I also enjoy its engagement with social problems endemic to economic exploitation (I only wished the player could choose their faction, as I would have sided unequivocally with Daisy Fitzroy and Vox Populi, but in the end I simply accepted that the story was going to be linear in that regard and enjoyed as it was).
Bioshock is a franchise that will never be forgotten in gaming and is one of my favourite FPS games ever with half life and doom anyway this video you made is well done and great nick keep it up man and ik it's not Christmas yet but merry Christmas
@@michaelfazio386 with modern 2K on the helm, I'll be expecting Mircrotranactions and Characters like Ava from Borderland 3, Bioshock will have a bright future
I loved Bioshock Infinite, everything about it...The whole Worlds Fair vibe, not afraid to tackle race issues & the Patriots “My Aim Is True...” Loved it all
just here to say thank you for your thorough research and neat presentation. its extremely entertaining to watch or just listen to these 'history of' videos as a podcast in the background. keep up the good work.
Thank you! Funny enough, I just finished the Bioshock games the day you published the documentary! They are very unique and narratively simply stunning! Infinite became one of my favorite games instantly!
Just some clarification about Burial at Sea Part 2: another huge change to gunplay is that weapon damage was inferior if the targeted enemy was alerted to you, just like Thief games were. I hated that, it was an unnecessary and artificial compromise to make the game more difficult.
It's to display that Elizabeth is frail, scared and underpowered when it comes to combat. Remember, that she has no acces to tears or insight of all doorways, all she has, are the memories of misery, regret and most importantly confusion of why she's there in the first place. She's basically traumatised. But, in terms of gameplay, i do agree though, especially since Burial at Sea episode 2 is longer than Episode 1. Perhaps Episode 1 should have had more exploration/filler for gameplays sake, and episode 2 should have had lesser. (Not that i call the events of Episode 2 fillers, it contains some of my favorite exposition in the games, tying up a lot of loose ends, that were left desired in Infinite)
This video is so beautiful it does so much justice to this amazing and beautiful franchise, it moved, wow thanks for this, that music in the background was a master touch.🔥
Loved part one and was willing to buy a 360 till I saw that it was releasing on PS3. Unlike popular opinion I love part two. Story was lacking but imo the combat system was perfect. It was a chore to finish infinite. Have replayed one and two many times but will never go back to infinite.
Thanks for making this commentary. It's my first experience of a video from you and I really enjoyed it. It was objective but with a definite show on how influential the series was that showed appreciation to the developers without fanboy service. It reminded me of a deepdive when I used to read EDGE way back when. Hope you are having good day and just wanted to say I appreciated your content.
This is one of the only games I've ever played that was so beautiful I didn't just try to rush through it, I walked around and tried to find every clue I could. Found many secret rooms, loot, etc. So much care was put into designing and building Columbia. It's the type of thing that will inspire game creators for decades to come, and no one has come close to matching the artistic talent. It almost feels like a game made by Disney... for adults. It's just perfect.
Like the idea of C&C. Battlefield & Half Life are definitely in the pipeline. I actually started my channel with Battlefield 2 videos back in 2007 believe it or not, so would love to return to one of my other all-time favorites. And expect a Half Life doc ahead of the VR release in 2020 :)
Love the video. My favourite game I've played that's story driven are (not in order)....... 1) Half Life (Boy I need a 3rd installment not a god danm pre-qual) 2) BioShock (all 1/2/infinite) 3) Marvel's Spiderman (The PS4 Exclusive one) The story lines and mechanics in these games are just perfect.
My favorite was Infinite I mean it was the first one I played and it was the first FPS I really delved into I never really was an fps fan till I played it cause I always sucked at them and didnt understand how to play them eventually I got the hang of it with Infinite I loved it I am kinda really into history so I love seeing all the old fashioned stuff conveintaly I expreienced the first game also cause Infinite had a download for the original then I played Bioshock 2 and the DLC and I can honestly say Bioshock 2 I think is underated but yeah Infinite is my favorite game of all time hands down ive beaten it like 10 times on PS3 and PS4! Also played the awesome Burial at Sea DLC!
In my opinion i really love the scenery of rapture over that of Colombia, but infinite is much more of a mind fuck than the others coupled with burial at sea its an amazing story. Weapons and plasmids in the first one are still my favorite tho lol
Still thankful I decided to take a chance on Bio Shock, I saw it on special at a convention and figured it'd be fun. Slapped it in and was impressed by what I saw and snatched up the sequel when it came out, 2 years later. I do know I was scratching my head at how Infinite was different to what the trailers showed (I know that most trailers for games are like that), but still was impressed. Took me a while to understand the ending though and I was bummed out at the end of Burial at sea part 2.
I've been playing video games since the psone and if there was one game I could erase from my memory to start it all over again, it would be Bioshock Great video, man!

@@honkandursun9402 I just found out too
Yes. Yes. Yes. Bioshock was literally my favorite story and game overall. So glad that you took the time to cover this one!
& going way way way back. Supper cool.
@@MauiWowieOwie - I could never harvest them. And the thought of it really bothered me and that surprised me.
@@kummakummakummakummakummac8606 that probably means you're a good person.
Inferno bioshock 2 was better 1 in terms of gameplay that’s for sure.

I still cry every time I beat Infinite and Burial at Sea. Amazing storytelling

Starkill345 im aware i just hope it goes well
This is so true.
Brilliant.
Wait can you please explain to me what ayn Rand means?
Michael Fazio I’ve been having strange coincidences lately and I’ve been really looking into ayn Rand and the relation to bioshock and I was intrigued by this individual’s comment and alas there we have another coincidence, finding someone with the same last name.
Yes, as good as this video is, I wished it touched on that a little.
@@thecianinator wow thats actually really interesting. Now are her books utopians or are they like non-fiction?
I would literally watch any Bioshock documentary : a 6 hour run down of why they chose the plane they did for the opening scene, the science behind creating Andrew Ryan's mustache, literally anything. That said... a documentary of the HISTORY of Bioshock : sign me up! Thank you for this, it was awesome! 👍

You can start by reading “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand. You’ll find many of the characters an themes there... even a few of the objects and play on names. (Ayn Rand/Andrew Ryan?)

If you're the type of person who likes to revisit audio logs or in-game dialouge outside the game, then there's a full chronology of events and audio logs of the entire series (Starting with before the events of Infinite, specifically when Booker as well as Rosalind Lutece were born) made by MysterMachineX and it's over 15 hours long.
@@michaelhenriksen7359 15 hours???
Oh my GOD.
@@honkandursun9402 Yeah, it just goes to show how much there is to piece together.

I haven't played the first System Shock game yet, but i've played System Shock 2 several playthroughs for the first time lately-
And it's a fucking masterpiece, just like the Bioshock games, but more like a survival horror esque approach to the gameplay and narrative.
honestly the only problem is the limitations of being the first to do things and being so innovative makes it look and feel less put together and more experimental
meanwhile I have no reservations about playing something more traditional and polished platformer released the same year, Earthworm Jim. And 2 may be later but still looks grimy and undetailed but not in the lore-steeped way of the first Bioshock.
I think I will probably be playing both of them in the future, though. my boyfriend has been begging me to get him SS 2.
I really love these videos and wish more people would watch em. They’re very well done.
I agree.
The work will pay off eventually.
Yeah he deserves way more views for the amount of work put in.
Honestly I preferred the rapture setting over the Columbia setting.
Columbia was a good idea in theory ... the problem was, Infinite ended up being a terrible game.
@@Krshwunk Infinite isnt a terrible game at all
@@sonicsucks2961 I disagree. I despise it. If you like it, whatever.
I like BioShock Infinite, but every time I'm reminded of how it looked in those early demos I get sad
Same.. especially the level of detail in that store. Would have loved to explore environments that were that deep.
It was a very ambitious concept... Too ambitious, unfortunately...
Geralt of Trivia haha, the wrench is definitely the best.
Katie.L Hall the wrench isn’t in infinite

while bioshock 1 is a great game, i found bioshock 2 to be my favorite in the series! it doesn't get as much love as the first one, but i feel like it had a lot of story, the gameplay was also so fun, and i loved the in depth relationship between the big daddies and little sisters.
Same! I adore all 3 but 2 is the best
Thank you for laying out the entire series out and explains some lore in the process!

You absolutely should! They're awesome
Bioshock 2 is my personal favorite to play in the franchise
Bioshock Infinite Takes a spin of the atmosphere and ideology, and makes a more Narrative driven approach to storytelling, rather than story through subtext.

Great job going back to cover the old Looking Glass games like Ultima Underworld and System Shock, those games were mindblowing at the time. Was a really fond surprise to see them pop up here

Not to mention even those that don't like Bioshock 2 as much still praise the Minerva's Den DLC.
wow this is one of the most underrated channels i have ever seen
BioShock was 2007
Alright you convinced me. I’ll buy the remastered collection

Bioshock MP was very unique and a lot of fun! I'll never forget it. Unfortunately it became "popular to hate mp in any game" around that time and people would label Bioshock MP as garbage simply for existing. A shame, really.

Me: Who after the plane crash loses his ability to speak. XD
The Bioshock collection was the thing that got me into it. The atmosphere, the city and, the enemies made the game so immerse. The story too
Nicely done.
I love the bioshock series and this is one is the best I've seen on covering the series. Great job Nick.
I swear, you and GVMER should do a collab as you make histories behind games really damn interesting
Bioshock is a franchise that will never be forgotten in gaming and is one of my favourite FPS games ever with half life and doom anyway this video you made is well done and great nick keep it up man and ik it's not Christmas yet but merry Christmas
Oh wow, two days later a new Bioshock is announced. R U A WIZARD?
My BioShock senses were tingling
@@Nick930 your a wizard harry
@@michaelfazio386 with modern 2K on the helm, I'll be expecting Mircrotranactions and Characters like Ava from Borderland 3, Bioshock will have a bright future
I can't believe you didn't mention a single time how great the score was for the first game.
Glad you enjoy it! I have a new project set to release Monday, stay tuned :)
maybe its’s a good thing EA didn’t want to make systemshock 3…
*microtransactions flashbacks*
This was a really well done synopsis of the series. I learned quite a bit about expansions/dlc's that I'd missed when they were released. Thanks!
How it started and how it all ended, brings tears in my eyes. 😢😢😢
There Will be a new game tho
BioShock 2007 was such a great game, I was blown away when I played it.
Great video, now you can do a documentary on c&c, battlefield or half life
Like the idea of C&C.
Battlefield & Half Life are definitely in the pipeline. I actually started my channel with Battlefield 2 videos back in 2007 believe it or not, so would love to return to one of my other all-time favorites. And expect a Half Life doc ahead of the VR release in 2020 :)
@RogueGamerPK Command and Conquer
Love the video.
My favourite game I've played that's story driven are (not in order).......
1) Half Life (Boy I need a 3rd installment not a god danm pre-qual)
2) BioShock (all 1/2/infinite)
3) Marvel's Spiderman (The PS4 Exclusive one)
The story lines and mechanics in these games are just perfect.
Also played the awesome Burial at Sea DLC!
weakest part of the series for the exact same reasons you love it for. you filthy casuals ruin everything.
Rayman17578 yea all your reasons to love it are reasons to hate it. That game sucks.
In my opinion i really love the scenery of rapture over that of Colombia, but infinite is much more of a mind fuck than the others coupled with burial at sea its an amazing story. Weapons and plasmids in the first one are still my favorite tho lol
Play the first bioshock. Bioshock too is okay I like it not gonna lie but the first bioshock is the way to go
Still thankful I decided to take a chance on Bio Shock, I saw it on special at a convention and figured it'd be fun.
I remember playing this with my dad when I was 6 years old..ahh the memories.
I've been playing video games since the psone and if there was one game I could erase from my memory to start it all over again, it would be Bioshock
Great video, man!
hey i just got a bioshock tattoo, 3 chain links on my left wrist, what timing.
