Marius, you can wrap the book in a clear plastic film with adhesive backing. That will thicken the front and back pages without obscuring the information.
I think it's very appropriate for a woodworker to have a book with a wooden back whose pages were cut on the table saw ;-) Thanks for sharing!
You are very smart, I always think while watching your videos. You can get book wrapping plastic sheets, they're already sticky on one side, you can even wrap around the wood spine if you want. Then it will be thicker, and water resistant.
Great video and fun tooooo. If you get plastic, large mouth container, spray it black, put your rubber bands in the container, and coat the rubber bands with talcum power, they will last FOREVER! It's how you preserve rubber...if no black jar talc...they get gooey and break.
Marius, I loved the binding for the manual. I'm doing a similar thing: my husband is learning Portuguese (for the hell of it) and one way to learn is to read familiar books in translation. I've been using two battens with carriage bolt to hold them together.. I've found that if you don't clamp right on the edge, but about 1cm away from it, the pages splay out a little, which allows the glue to penetrate between them for a short distance. I reinforce the spine with carpet tape.
Look for self-adhesive, clear shelf liner. Works amazingly well for covers and you can still see the page.
LPT: keep the rubber bands sealed away from air and UV light. This prevents them from becoming brittle. It also helps to spray them with silicone lubricant.
What they normally do when binding a book up is to make saw cuts perpendicular across the portion you slid the piece of wood on. Then take string back an d forth and then glue. Good vid. Thanks
You could make a front and back cover with a thin piece of wood the size of the book. Use the wooden back to tape to, using the tape to create a hing. Protects the book pages and can be as simple, or as complicated (inlay?) as you want.
A couple of things about the book binding. Definitely avoid letting glue run down the edges of the pages. That's not where you want them to stick together. Along the spine, have just a bit more of the pages be above the clamp. That will let glue get slightly deeper than just on the face of the spine itself. It doesn't need to go in very far, but letting it in will strengthen the binding considerably. You can also apply a cloth strip sized to fit the spine. The glue will hold it in place while it dries, then the cloth will help hold the pages together after the glue dries. It doesn't have to be thick and a looser weave is best, but not a stretchy fabric. The tape used to cover gaps between sheets of drywall works, too. Just cut it to match the size of the spine. You might find that a bandsaw does a better job of cutting the bound pages to their final size than a table saw. You'll need to clamp a caul close to the cut to prevent tearing, but that applies to using a table saw, too. HTH.

You could use your CNC to engrave a set of thin wood covers and then use cloth or leather hinges to attach them to the wooden spine.
Great idea on holding the segmented pieces while spreading the glue. Hopefully there will be a future video showing how you make and turn a segmented bowl or vase.
I love the wooden spine for your manual. For future reference a belt sander works really well for flattening out the edges too.
a small tip for the camera manual, if you use a piece of thin leather or suede taping/glueing it to the wooden spine on one side and then fold it around the book (perhaps with a wooden stiffener at the other end) you can protect the book from dirt without replacing the front and back pages.
In book making, string is put through holes and tied together. The sections of bound pages are stacked as a book then glued to the spine. I've tried drilling into paper but I never have a sharp enough bit for it or I can't squeeze the pages tight enough without damage.
There's a special kind of drill bit for drilling paper. It's like a tube with a sharpened end. They work very well, I've used them a lot at my dad's printing business.
cutting a whole stack of paper is very easy on the bandsaw. you just clamp them together somehow and cut slowly

Best keep your extra rubber bands in the freezer. This will prevent degradation until you get around to use them all up.
I liked the book binding. It has a bit of a different "twist" to it. It's also good to know that someone does RTFM.... ;)

realy liled the new technique where you talk and work on something and while doing it the camera angle changes. made the whole video look more dynamic instead of your normal style of explaining what you gona do and then do it. it was just a short segment of the video but it looked new and very nice. keep up the good work
thanks. That's tough though, as some things I do can only be done once and if I mess up the talking, the whole shot is ruined.
I like both. Matthias Wandel and Jay Bates are really good at doing that (for example), but many people just do voice overs...
And to add to this, the talking doesn't have to be absolutely perfect.
A few mistakes here/there doesn't distract much, if at all.
When people talk to me, they make mistakes too. I don't mind if someone makes mistakes while talking in a video...

@0:30 "Does it work? Can't tell you... you have to wait." You have a great deadpan delivery, the slight inflection on the "Can't tell you" part was perfect. I know from older videos you were concerned about your English, well this shows you've not only mastered that but also the inflection.
You have come a long way in such a short time with making it look so easy and natural talking to the camera. As your outtakes show, I know it is not.
And since you've sort of cloned yourself, get your second self to help out more so you can get out twice as many videos. haha

just use some hinges and thin plywood it'll make a nice sturdy cover ;)
Pro tip: you can watch movies on flixzone. I've been using it for watching a lot of movies lately.

Belt sander works on steel well enough. Betting it will chew through the forstner bit fine.

It always hurts when I see someone drilling, tapping or threading metal without oil.
You can try laminate some transparent plastic onto the first and last pages of the book, even now that it's finished - if you still use that book. Put some transparent plastic the like of which is used for overhead projector slides, onto the paper, put some cotton cloth (a piece of an old bed sheet or the like - has to be smooth but not very soft/fluffy, so towels or old T-shirts are not a good choice) and iron over it, with the iron set to the temperature for cotton.
I am certain that if you were to get a piece of leather that you would come up with some way to cover your new book. Your videos always entertain as well as teach. I'm glad to see that you are increasing your knowledge of video making, because what you are doing now is fantastic, can't wait for whats coming!
Something I would suggest for next time you bind a book (if ever) is to rough up the edge of the paper before putting the glue. This helps the glue absorb into the paper better and hold it more securely.
I love the segmented ring glue-up jig! How do you avoid glue build-up? Do you scrape dried glue off of it or wipe it with a wet rag when the glue is wet? Thanks for all your videos!

Bind the book edge with rubber cement, then fabric or leather over it for a strong and flexible edge.
I bettcha find the the camera manual within two weeks haha, but seriously, no matter what you'd have at least one manual and now you know how to make awesome books so it's a "win-win" which is the wrong way to use that expression but yaknowaddamean. :D

Wenn der Holzleim nicht halten sollte, dann versuch nächstes Mal den Kleber "Kövulfix". Der ist eigentlich für Schuhe und bleibt daher dauerelastisch, aber im Grund genommen ist er total praktisch und vielseitig und man kann fast alles mit ihm kleben.
Du solltest nur die Verarbeitung üben, da es ein Kontaktkleber ist, geht das ganze ein wenig anders.
Achja, welchen Holzleim verwendest du? In so Videos sieht man ja meistens nur diese großen Flaschen mit gelbem Leim, klassischen Ponal-Leim findet man seltenst.

What kind of tap are you using? I've never seen one with drill threads and cutting flutes.
it's a spiral tap. You don't need to clear the chips with it.

Nach kurzer Recherche der Firma auf deinem Shirt geh ich einfach mal davon aus, dass du Deutsch sprichst. ^.^
Was deinen Buchbindeversuch angeht:
grundsätzlich die richtige Idee gehabt, so ähnlich funktionieren Paperbacks auch und Holzleim hat halbwegs ähnliche eigenschaften wie synthetischer Buchbinderleim.
Ein Trick, um das ganze nochmals haltbarer zu machen ist es, den Buchblock mit etwa 2-3cm Überhang einzuspannen und sich zwei entsprechende Leisten zum Klemmen dieses Überhangs zurechtzuschneiden. Beim Leimen selbst drückst du die hervorstehenden Seiten etwas zur Seite, um nicht nur das "Hirnholz" des Papiers einzuleimen, sondern auch 1-2mm von den Seitenflächen.
so in etwa: ||||||||||| > /////////// > \\\\\\\\\
Das verlängert die Lebensdauer des Rückens ungemein, da die Seiten auch direkt aneinander kleben.
Für den Beschnitt am Ende ist die Kreissäge eigentlich ungeeignet, am besten geht es eingespannt zwischen zwei Leisten mit einem scharfen Putzhobel, schräg zur Schubrichtung gehalten.

Ich finde deine Videos echt cool. Möchte in der nächsten Zeit auch mit "Holz-Basteln" in der Werkstätte beginnen. und das Problem mit der Absaugung steht vor allem anderen... weil ich möchte ja auch nach ein paar Stunden noch mein Werrkzeug finden.
