I prefer to very lightly tap it on the side of the lid on a concrete floor or pathway. The whole idea is to release the vacuum seal and while a knife does this job, you won't have to worry about damaging it.
Mine banged the top of the lid flat against the countertop once (sometimes twice) and that broke the seal. Never had a jar break, but this way is quieter lol
I’ve twisted my wrist, worn rubber gloves, thought I was losing my muscles, got cross, hurt my hands....In desperation I turned to youtube, thank you so much, perfect. ❤️
Absolutely brilliant! How have I never heard this before.? Was just almost breaking my wrist trying to open a jar of jam. Had given up when I looked for tips on UA-cam . This is totally fantastic. I opened the jar then INSTANTLY 😊. Thank you so much
@@kiillabytez I'm 75 and until about 3 or 4 years ago I never had a problem, so I never needed to look for solutions,, what is strange about that? Why the skepticism?
I used to pride myself in being able to open anything when nobody else could. Now I’m 80 years old and, with the help of your fabulous video, I can still amaze people. Thanks.
I keep a strap wrench nearby for opening pickles, etc., the first time. It still can be a task to get everything just right. This looks too easy. I must tell my wife!
I had a jar opener to open a large jar and it did NOTHING! Your knife tip worked PERFECTLY! Thank you, thank you, thank you. Sometimes it's just the little things that can make us happy.
Fan-bloody-tastic! I made my daughter a home made beef burger and wanted to put gherkins on the top, could not open the jar, my hands were so sore from trying and I gave up. Googled for tips and came across your video, Thank You so much! Who knew it was so easy and it`s it`s so simple when you know how.
This was insane! Me, my roommates, and my boyfriend were struggling to open the hardest jar of our lives and within seconds of using the knife it popped and we could get it open! Literally amazing trick!!
I have been doing this for many years. I'm 74 and have been doing this for over 40 years and it's great to show everyone this simple trick. I all so use a bottle opener with the round side that does the same thing, but, you can's over power the lid. Great video for those who have a problem with jars.
Thank you soooo much. I was just about to give up on my evening meal after trying all the other tips but I just kept on searching until I found yours and it worked wonderfully. Thanks again and I won't forget this tip.
I love how opening a jar is supposed to be simple.. but a lot of us have a hard time one way or another. Thank you for showing us, I never thought to open it like this!
Thank you sooooooooo much. I was about to throw out this bottle of chopped garlic after months of trying to unscrew it. I figured the hand surgery I'd had a few years ago didn't help matters. Came across your video and got it open in two seconds!
There's also a tool called the JarKey that you can get for about $6.00. Works much the same way by simply breaking the seal. No damage to the lid at all. I keep one right next to the stove in the spatula caddy so it's always handy. One of the best kept secrets around!
live in rural southeast asia and my wife give me this strange jar, none can't open the lid, we were depressed, then i watched this and the lid now open, now i am the chief of the people
Amazing, thank you! Almost dislocated my thumb before this! Ended up using a flathead screwdriver instead of a knife to avoid injury. Brilliant technique!
It's really working. I spent days trying to open a jar of olive. Other people also helped. I was going to put it in trash Until I went on UA-cam and I saw your video. It took only second to open it. Thank you so much
❤It works wonder, I thought I would have to buy a jar opener but I remember UA-cam is where you can get useful tips from people and it was exactly what I found. Thank you 😊 ❤
I have just spent 3 days trying to get the lid off a jar of jam without success 🙁 Decided to check UA-cam for a video and came across yours .. Decided to give it a try this morning and it works amazingly. As title stated just seconds and with no excess strength required off it popped 😊 Thank you 👍
Simple, excellent and it works! I use an old fashioned bottle/can opener by the crimp but doesn’t always take hold but it works after some hassle. This method with the knife is much better!
Interesting! Can’t wait to try it out. Previously when all else failed, I upended the jar in some shallow boiling water so the lid expanded enough to free it, but this new method seems fantastic!
Brilliant thank you . Been struggling for years because of arthritis, had all sorts of gadgets. For the last year I've been using the rubber none slip mat stuff but it let me down this morning. Googled you and hey presto!!! First time. Thank you so much.
Wow! I have a jar I have been trying to open for weeks but never could! I just tried what you showed and what do you know? It opened so easily!!!!!!! Thank you for sharing this absolutely brilliant idea!!
Yep - been doing this for years. Works a treat. I close my eyes when doing it in case a chip of glass comes off at speed - hasn’t happened yet but I always ‘catastrophise’
For those like me who have a hard time with pill bottles with the safety lid (push and turn ones), hammer a thumbtack in the top of the lid and it becomes a normal lid. You are basically attaching the individual pieces together so it is just a turn lid not a push down and turn.
I used to turn it upside down and hit the top on the table a few times or more until I heard a pop sound. It used to open easily after that. But your method is a better one.
Just knock the edge of the lid against a wall or benchtop. Breaks the air seal and the top comes off easily. Chef’s tip we use in the restaurant all the time. No knives, tools or anything else required. 👍👍
Awesome! As a 13 year old when I’m home alone and need lunch or any other thing in a jar this helps a bunch as I don’t have a mum to show me this type of thing so thanks a lot
Omg this worked! Picked beetroot so I was worried about the vinegar going everywhere and staining but it did not, all stayed in the jar and easy to open!
Omg, the best jar-opening technique there is. It helps a lot. It's exactly how he says it. I don't believe I have been doing it wrong all these years.
Poor baby.
Better late than never.🙂↕️
Agreed!
true the pickle jar was hard to open and the butter knife method worked
I prefer to very lightly tap it on the side of the lid on a concrete floor or pathway. The whole idea is to release the vacuum seal and while a knife does this job, you won't have to worry about damaging it.
Absolutely! My dear Mum showed me this when I was about 12yrs old. I’m 64 now and have passed this on many times in my lifetime.

A flat head screw driver worked for me. The knife I was using was bending too much.
Same mate same
Been using this for “trick” for 50 plus years……..
You forgot to mention ALL the Swearing you did also. Haha
Absolutely brilliant! How have I never heard this before.? Was just almost breaking my wrist trying to open a jar of jam. Had given up when I looked for tips on UA-cam . This is totally fantastic. I opened the jar then INSTANTLY 😊. Thank you so much
Immersing the metal lid in hot water for a few seconds helps but I will try this on my next jar of Smuckers strawberry jam . 🙂
I hope you share this wrist breaking avoidance solution with the world ;-)

Actually not your fault. They made the jars tighter. Machines. I can’t open most of them either now.

Holy cow, this is great. I used a flat-head screwdriver as my table knife was not up to the task. But it was a miracle. Thanks!
