    Omg, the best jar-opening technique there is. It helps a lot. It's exactly how he says it. I don't believe I have been doing it wrong all these years.

      I prefer to very lightly tap it on the side of the lid on a concrete floor or pathway. The whole idea is to release the vacuum seal and while a knife does this job, you won't have to worry about damaging it.

    Absolutely! My dear Mum showed me this when I was about 12yrs old. I’m 64 now and have passed this on many times in my lifetime.

      Mine banged the top of the lid flat against the countertop once (sometimes twice) and that broke the seal. Never had a jar break, but this way is quieter lol

      A flat head screw driver worked for me. The knife I was using was bending too much.

    Absolutely brilliant! How have I never heard this before.? Was just almost breaking my wrist trying to open a jar of jam. Had given up when I looked for tips on UA-cam . This is totally fantastic. I opened the jar then INSTANTLY 😊. Thank you so much

      Immersing the metal lid in hot water for a few seconds helps but I will try this on my next jar of Smuckers strawberry jam . 🙂

      @@Brewermb This trick was standard for any jars. That's why lids have slots in them. Anyone who's pickled anything before knows that.

      I keep a strap wrench nearby for opening pickles, etc., the first time. It still can be a task to get everything just right. This looks too easy. I must tell my wife!

    Fan-bloody-tastic! I made my daughter a home made beef burger and wanted to put gherkins on the top, could not open the jar, my hands were so sore from trying and I gave up.     This was insane! Me, my roommates, and my boyfriend were struggling to open the hardest jar of our lives and within seconds of using the knife it popped and we could get it open! Literally amazing trick!!

    I have been doing this for many years. I'm 74 and have been doing this for over 40 years and it's great to show everyone this simple trick. I all so use a bottle opener with the round side that does the same thing, but, you can's over power the lid. Great video for those who have a problem with jars.

    There's also a tool called the JarKey that you can get for about $6.00. Works much the same way by simply breaking the seal. No damage to the lid at all. I keep one right next to the stove in the spatula caddy so it's always handy. One of the best kept secrets around!

    Simple, excellent and it works! I use an old fashioned bottle/can opener by the crimp but doesn’t always take hold but it works after some hassle. This method with the knife is much better!

    Interesting! Can’t wait to try it out. Previously when all else failed, I upended the jar in some shallow boiling water so the lid expanded enough to free it, but this new method seems fantastic!

    For those like me who have a hard time with pill bottles with the safety lid (push and turn ones), hammer a thumbtack in the top of the lid and it becomes a normal lid.
    You are basically attaching the individual pieces together so it is just a turn lid not a push down and turn.

    I used to turn it upside down and hit the top on the table a few times or more until I heard a pop sound. It used to open easily after that. But your method is a better one.

    Just knock the edge of the lid against a wall or benchtop. Breaks the air seal and the top comes off easily. Chef’s tip we use in the restaurant all the time. No knives, tools or anything else required. 👍👍
