Well I must say thank you for sharing. I have an 05 2.8 and let it sit last winter and had trouble getting the key out after I started using the car again. Never knew there was a manual key realise. All I did after watching this was cut a pencil eraser to fit the hole and put that little cover back in so the key realise is continuously engaged no problem since. Best video ever. Thanks again.

Starting it with the primary wire works but after I shut it off for a while and go to start it again, it won’t start unless I use the wire. This all started when my water pump went bad...

Assy you need to get an old CTS-V then you can tell all about the tricks for that engine as well. I like your insights as a professional mechanic. If you get a first gen V you will have a lot of fun and still be able to haul beer and groceries (trunk plus back seats fold down) and friends as they are 4 doors. Plus they were all manual transmissions so harder for millennial car thieves to steal. One odd thing I noticed with my LS6 was: rough idle, no codes, vacuum gauge was in the green zone and steady. Smoke machine showed leaking intake gaskets, I checked the torque of the bolts, supposed to be 89 inch pounds, they were only 20! Took the bolts out, cleaned the threads, loctite 243, 44 then 89 inch pounds as per manual, runs like a champ now. Have you heard of factory torqued bolts loosening like that or more likely previous owner? Subscribed, thanks for your useful content.
I bought a 04 SRX V6 All wheel drive . when I I'll watch your video I seen a purple wire that someone put in the truck that I bought got a push start button on it I wonder why they have it like that that cost of the key won't turn back that make the ECM say Lost communication
This worked but it will make your engine light come on with code PO700. I also notice after shorting the starter to get the engine running when driving down shift is abrupt. I noticed the engine light on in your video fill us in if you did more work to the car. Thanks.
Mine did the same thing, along with the shift indicator light not working until battery voltage was back to normal. My engine light was the p0420 converter codes cause mine were removed
Going to try this. I think I missed the step about the manual key release. Anyway 2005 CTS original owner 2nd time this happened to me in about 3 years. First time the dealer bent me over hit me hard and didn't even buy me a drink. Yesterday happened 2nd time able to bring it to a lot I parked in. Hope to get the key out. First Caddy but when you google CTS key stuck and see all the angry responses going to check out either a Camry or Accord.
Im having a problem figuring out whats wrong with my 2004 cts it is a 3.2 tho. They key turn over and ticks. Lights still all come on, and all lights on my dashboard, security light blinks over and over. I have been driving in second gear when I normally drive in automatic. I think it died out from my AC/heater running, cus it would start shaking when I had them running. The battery is pretty new bought on 4/20. New coils, spark plug, mass air intake or whatever that is called.
Check fusible link...its between alternator and starter. Computer is picky about low voltage and those links are notorious for failure. Its like 200 or 250 amp.
Hi I’ve been having problems with my Cadillac CTS it’s a 03 I’ve been having to turn on my car pressing on the fuse to turn on . Hi there. It is jennie from canada. The gal with keys that got stuck in ignition. Got them out. Got car started and she worked couple days. Been very cold here but has warmed. Have tryed to boost her and she wants to go but not fully. What should i do. What could be the issue. New battery. The battery was new last yr. Ohhh and the blocl heater cord is on passenger side fire panel wall. It is attached and sort of hidden. The plug has a black cap attached so it does not look like a plug in until cap removed. I was trying to install a Bluetooth Module on my Daughters 05 CTS and I got this lock out. Got the key out then tried your Jump and it just turned over but no start. When I close the door and try to start, the locks go up and down? Any Ideas? I got a charger on the car tonight and hopefully it will cooperate.
Juliette Niner since I'm not sure what the Bluetooth thing is, did you have the radio or OnStar stuff disconnected? Is it flashing or showing a security light?
Hello, it’s an aftermarket Bluetooth module that takes the place of XM. I was trying to find a good Acc Hot. I have taken out the small ignition plug before and it was the same thing but as soon as I plugged it back it, I could turn the key off and start. I saw a code on the radio but didn’t see a theft light. I was in a rush and panicked bec I had to go to work with a broke car. Left the charger on till morning. When I checked it, was 11.5 volts after messing with the BTooth

Mike Lopez something is way wrong. If the car hasn't physically been in an accident you're going to have to get a scan tool and read body control module codes
This is meant to be used in case you let the battery drain a bit. If this is a recurring problem, look at your battery, alternator grounds, or possibly PCM. In this case, I let the car sit about a week or so and the battery wasn't dead, but was below normal voltage.
Assy McGee first thank you for the quick reply. & second I have an 08 cts not sure if theyre the same but my key got stuck in the ignition & it won’t let me take it out. I’m no mechanic but I find it weird that this would happen bcz of a dead battery!? I guess I could take the battery out & go get it tested anyhow. I had the same problem you had just today, the funny thing is I was picking up my car from the dealer ship. I took it in for a repair, but when I picked it up the car wouldn't start and the key got stuck. I left it there cause all the mechanics had left for the day. I'm going in morning tomorrow. My question is why did it get stuck and not release is it cause my battery is low ? ? the portable charger read my battery at 12.4 and that it was low.
Good possibility, they are the stealership. What year, engine, and what symptoms is your car suffering from? Btw, when I broke down and put a PCM in the car in the video, it was $275 from O'Reilly's and $100 for a local guy to come flash it, and yes you have to have it flashed, security system and stuff
Assy McGee the symptoms are I tried to turn the ignition to turn the car on and no crank no start, the anti theft light starts blinking and a sound with it something said on the middle where you read the temp and battery voltage and all the other things but I didn't read it when I tried to turn it on 3 days ago. After that The dealer ship told me that sometimes it turns on and sometimes it doesn't. I have to wait till the manager comes in tomorrow to argue with him that they want me to pay for a new ECM module.
It sounds like the antitheft part of the ECM went bad. You can change it yourself with a 10mm and a torx bit set, I think it's a t30. Get a new ECM and make sure you have someone other than the dealer capable of flashing it. It literally takes 10 minutes to change
I had the same problem with an 04 Cadillac cts 3.6L key stuck in the ignition and doesn't communicate with the obd scanner. I took it to the dealership and was told I need a new ecu. This problem happened probably when someone was changing the battery and put the + on - so be careful.
First, you make some good points, however, that ECU issue is usually accompanying a skip in the engine and battery dead overnight. ECU problems usually don't tell on themselves. If the scanner won't communicate, check the fuse box, usually it's the same as the cigarette lighter fuse.
2005 CTS 2.8L Car was sitting and battery went dead. Took out battery and had it tested, needed new battery. Saved up a few weeks to get new battery and installed. Car does not start, theft light on in dash, key stuck. Would sitting too long with no battery damage ECM?

everyone realizes without the car on front of me and using my diagnosis scanner there's only so much I can do, right? I think buttons 2 and 6 on the radio will get you to the codes readout and they can be cleared from there
I have a 2004 Cadillac SRX 4.6 runs and starts fine, but cannot get the key out so I have to use the ball point pen method to remove the key. Is there a simple fix to this or is it a dealership required fix?
Well, a determined guy could pull the bottom column cover off, take the little sheet metal rocker(that's what you actually push with the pen) as it pulls a pin down, hold the pin down and use a small zip tie to permanently hold the pin down. I actually broke the rocker thing on my first cts. I cut a hole big enough to reach in and pull it down with a finger. Pulling the column cover, zip tie down, and replace column cover is probably the better repair, but that first cts was a pile and I didn't care about a hole under the column.
@@assymcgee2835 I wanted to thank you for the idea. I took the steering wheel column off (what a chore) and put the zip tire around the piece the rocker pushes down preventing it from going back up. The key goes in and out great now. Thanks again for the idea, I could not be happier with the solution.
@@douglaspark59 you're welcome. The worst part is getting it around the key tumbler. I have taken a razor to that little ring before just to not fight it going back on
SHIFTER SLAYER I might have missed responding to you. The pen is poked GENTLY into the hole you remove the little plastic plug from, under the steering column. I can't stress gently enough. I broke it on one of my other CTS and had to cut a hole big enough to work the plunger for the key release.

I got the car to start but the security light stayed on and key did not release after the car set about 2 minutes then the car wouldn't start. Tried it again and it did the same thing. After car is started how long does the car suppose to run for the auto theft light to go off. Please reply.

I have a 05 cts I put negative and positive post wrong and it spark and now my car doesn’t turn on. But I check fuses none of them are blown. Any way you can help?
Btw, I have the exact same pos and same prob- I started jumping the starter relay with a paperclip with the key on and it starts then put the relay back in. I had to do this a few times and now it starts every time- obviously an iffy ground somewhere. just keep a paperclip in the console.

Trying to program some new keyless entry fobs, and my hazard lights wont go off now and the service Anti theft System light flashes across the Radio dash. Is there a way to reset this without the dealer ? or is this an expensive fix from the dealer?
Kenny Mac I've always used a scan tool, I don't know of a back way to program them. Try disconnect the battery for about 15 minutes and see if that clears it up
I have an 03 CTS and my car always start with one turn of the ignition. However, after my mechanic changed my manifold gaskets which was leaking oil into my spark plugs causing my vehicle to smoke, the vehicle no longer started when I cranked it. The mechanic then connected a wire from the starter to the battery terminal that started my car. He stated that I needed a starter brush set replaced. Had I seen this video prior to I would have asked him to use your method. What should i do now and do you think it may be my relay rather than the starter?
If the starter works with a jumper wire then I would look at the relay or possibly he unplugged something and didn't know it. Bad brushes and it won't crank at all
I tried your method and it cranked up right away so I assume it must be the relay that don't work. I'll buy another relay and see how it goes. You should do more videos on the CTS so people like me can do our own mechanic work on our car.
I purchased a brand new relay, however, my car still doesn't crank up until I bridge the relay terminal again. I also noticed that my speedometer isn't working and for a brief moment my accelerator wasn't responding after pressing down on it. My alarm does come on and am able to disarm it. I believe the mechanic must have unplugged a wire or something from my starter when he ran the wire to the battery and must not have put it back the right way. What do you think the problem could be?
Ok, first things first. Check your battery and connection if you haven't already done so. These cars get real pissy if the battery is below like 13.5. I actually charged the battery for this particular car overnight on a trickle charger and it still wouldn't start by itself, and the battery read 12.5. Also, with all these newer cars, check and clean all the grounds you can find
I like and learned from this video. Question, I have a 2004 cts w/ a no crank no start problem, jumped the starter relay and it started. It continued to start ok for a couple days, next morning it would not crank, had to jump relay. I changed the relay w/ one next to it (cigar relay same #number) still no crank. Will start sometimes but must times it wont . Could you give me an idea of what the problem could be. I like your video and subscribed , you get right to the problem, which I like.
Joseph M the reason these cars do this is low battery voltage. first check your battery connection. second obviously make sure your battery isn't messed up/shorted internally or otherwise junk. third check your driver information center on the radio while you're driving and keep an eye on your battery voltage for a possible alternator issue. these won't crank if your voltage is below like 13.5. I charged mine on a trickle charger overnight but the charger only put it at 12.5 so I had to do this so the car could charge it to it's desired voltage

You can use any primary wire available at the parts store. Key has to be in 'run' position. You might have a problem with it reading the chip in the key
@@ybgkonceited2635 if it's a battery voltage issue, after it charges up your car should return to normal. These cars like 13 volts and above. The car in this video wouldn't start after charging overnight in my shop charger

Juan Mejia unlikely. I had an 03 that did the exact same thing your car was doing, also had a dead miss/skip to the engine. my bet there is a replacement PCM. I never fixed my 03, it was a rebuilt wreck and basically a piece of junk. 03 seems to be it's own animal, alot different from an 04 even though side by side they look identical
Had them both tested. There both good. It still no crank. Still have to jump it like your video. Any other suggestions. By the way. How do you clear codes without code reader.
Only the 03 cars would let you check and clear codes without the reader. You can use the info center on the stock radio and watch the voltage. If it's not 14.5 or better then it's the alternator, whether it tested good or not
Probably need to scan it for codes. Sometimes the intermittent stall and difficult restart with no check engine light or code is the crank or cam sensors
So i have a 06 cadilac dts with the north star in it and i was pulling out of a parking lot turned and drove about 20 feet and the car turned off it would not turn back on i get error on dash that says engine power reduced and service stabilitrac i put the obd 2 on it and im getting the p1682 code dont know where to start maybe relays?
I would guess you fixed it by now, and I'm not real familiar with the DTS, only worked on one that new so far that needed a water pump and thermostat. Any gm with that stabilitrak has the wheel speed sensors running the throttle body. Yes you read that right. Just a guess would be that throttle body
Just a note, some places like O'Reilly's offer the pcm that needs programming, AutoZone, as much of a bad joke as those fools are offer it pre programmed. If they ask you for the VIN and mileage it's pre programmed. However, even my local guy that only does programming had to run the security software three times before it took to my car. That could be a problem on pre programmed pcms. Also, per Derek that worked for GM, changing the pcm is part of their troubleshooting. Exhaust all other cost effective troubleshooting before resorting to the PCM. Meaning if the dealership says it needs a PCM right off the bat, they don't really know what's actually wrong with a car
Assy McGee definitely when they put the obd 2 on it the code p1682 comes up which could be the ignition switch which ive changed, the wiring could be faulty it was checked and nothing out of the ordinary then changed out a few relays and still wants to start but does not it cranks and then cuts off as its about to start so they were pretty adamint about the pcm/ecm idk im good with changing out parts but electrical stuff drive me crazy hahaa
I changed alternator, plugs, fuel injectors, fuel filter, new battery. Jumped starter relay and its cuts right off. Key gets stuck every time. Any suggestions???
QAM YASHARAHLA that actually sounds like the security system. cranking and running for a second or two then dieing. I'll research that a bit deeper. still check all your grounds, clean your pcm connection and add a LITTLE dielectric grease to them.
Assy McGee thanks I prop a stick under my key ignition to keep it turn completely over to start it and it will stay running once I remove stick it cuts right off ... do u thinks it’s the ignition switch bad because theft system on also
Right before I brought new ecu because my car would crank or anything after replacing battery Swapped one fuse got it to crank Swapped main computer fuse and she cranked right up Check your fuses
I have an 05 the brakes went bad and it set for a couple of months. Went to start it and the key Was stuck and the battery was bad. Changed the battery and it fired right up. It was the front brake lines from the master cylinder to the anti lock break Box. changed those but had a hard time getting to them so took the antilock break Box off and got everything fixed. Put everything together and now the car won't start and the key gets stuck every time. Your trick with the key worked . But now the car won't start. using the wire it will crank But it will not fire up. What now? Help
Antionette Evans bottom of steering column. Look under there, it should have a little black cap with a slot, 1/4 turn and it pops out. Paperclip or something gently pushed in will release the key. Don't push too hard. I broke that on my old CTS.

@@jenballendine8132 I went and checked my 2003 in the driveway. There are three holes in the middle of the bottom column cover between the steering wheel and knee panel. It's the hole closest to the wheel, slightly smaller than it's neighbor. Luckily I had one of the cars at home and not parked them all at the shop
I hate my 2007 CTS ... its been nothing but a money pit and now my key is stuck in ignition and im being told I have to replace my knock sensors cause it will not go from 2nd to 3rd sometimes and to top it off all 4 windows stopped going up and down and the suggested fix is in some wiring under the carpet in passenger side back floorboard. Im about to just take a loss and sell it for what I can get. =0(
The windows is definitely the wiring under the pass side rear carpet. Or the master switch. Never heard of knock sensors preventing transmission shifts. I understand your frustration but you have to remember a used car is only as good as the maintenance it received before you owned it. That gray car in the video was very nice appearing but was a total pile of crap. The black 04 cts in some of my other videos was a 600 dollar pile and it has required some repair but very reliable
NIGHTMARE FOXY it's just a piece of wire. Just plain electrical wire. 14 to 12 gauge will do just fine. Available at any hardware store or advance, AutoZone, O'Reilly's, pep boys, whatever is convenient
I have 07 cts says service theft system and gas gauge, temperature don't work and car with lock light is on. Please help, ive tried resetting codes with scan tool but it didn't work
Jaritza Colon ok first like I tell everyone that has a problem with these cars. have the battery charged and tested, check and double check battery connection and main grounds. These cars go completely bonkers if the voltage isn't just right. let the car sit and hour or so to let the ECM reset with the battery completely disconnected. those are the first two things to try. a bad pcm or pcm connection could also be the issue. always check battery connection and have it loads tested first because most Auto parts stores do the charge and test FREE. Also remember the pimply teenage moron at the parts store IS NOT A MECHANIC.
Last resort before a possible pcm replacement is this. Requires no tools, one spray can of electrical cleaner and a tube of dielectric grease. Both available at any Auto parts or hardware store. Pull the two pcm connection clean them both and apply a Small amount of dielectric grease to the wiring plugs. Do this with the battery completely disconnected for at least ten minutes
Ok I have a 05 cts v6 was listening to some music then all of sudden it went dead it cranks 2 to 3 times lights work my display screen work but now it's not.
Assy McGee, have same problem and i jump it like in your video every morning. During the day its OK and starts normally, but after some time no more. When i put key inside and turn first step, lights are not there. So, i think the problem is during the key put inside or in this first step. My starter relay is OK, i have new Battery, i have changed Ignition starter switch (not Selenoid, just switch)... same problem :( what can you suggest? Important thing is: this problem comes not every time! only after some hours. for example: if i jump it from starter relay (like in your video), after that i can turn it of and start again with key 20-30 times and no problem! only after some hours problem comes again. @@amadeosanchez9323 was out of town a few days. Is it not getting fuel? Try a can of starting fluid, just spray a little while it cranks. If it tries to run you got a fuel issue or it's not firing the injectors
People, Help :) i have same problem, but only every morning. if i start my CTS (2004 V6, 3.6) during the day more times, it works, but if i start only in the morning and evening, problem is there. i have changed battery - same problem. in the past, this problem came only one time in 3-4 months. now every day: i mean no start no cranck, key stucks in ignition, no temperature and petrol signs working, "service theft system" on display. after this i start motor with taking out starter relay and starting from there... so, Crank sensor? also...is the shift indicator lights working? low battery voltage or a trashed ecm could be the problem. and wiggle the shifter, sometimes the car doesn't think it's in park and won't release the key. it SOUNDS like battery or ECM. batteries cheap, ECM is expensive if you can get a reman without sending yours in first

I was just at the fuel station and a woman had this exact problem with an 03, first thing I did was check the battery cables, she was pulling fuses and relay under the hood and said it happened before. I went to my pickup to grab my phone to Google the issue, I came back and told her what I found, she was frantic still trying wiggle fuses and relays after she tried this a few times she got in the car and it started but as it was cranking over it was not a consistent crank it paused 2 or 3 times then turned over and fired up. I am a mechanic, but I haven't ever worked on this system before. Crazy as it sounds I wish I would have had more time to find out what she did and why it wasn't cranking consistently
old timer unsure on the inconsistent crank, but hard restart after getting gas is the evap purge valve. Pass side by the battery. 10mm holds it to the upper plenum. Five minutes to change one out
Assy McGee it wasn't a hard restart, just inconsistent like a bad connection, I'm curious as to what she pulled that reset the security lockout. The light was on on the display. Thanks for the video though

btw everyone. I am interested in buying a few of these CTS's with major mechanical breakdowns if the price is reasonable and they are located in the Southeast. SC, NC, Georgia, someplace I can have them delivered on a transfer truck reasonably. I don't want major crash damage or disease carrying interiors.

All I did after watching this was cut a pencil eraser to fit the hole and put that little cover back in so the key realise is continuously engaged no problem since. Best video ever. Thanks again.

Assy you need to get an old CTS-V then you can tell all about the tricks for that engine as well. I like your insights as a professional mechanic. If you get a first gen V you will have a lot of fun and still be able to haul beer and groceries (trunk plus back seats fold down) and friends as they are 4 doors. Plus they were all manual transmissions so harder for millennial car thieves to steal. One odd thing I noticed with my LS6 was: rough idle, no codes, vacuum gauge was in the green zone and steady. Smoke machine showed leaking intake gaskets, I checked the torque of the bolts, supposed to be 89 inch pounds, they were only 20! Took the bolts out, cleaned the threads, loctite 243, 44 then 89 inch pounds as per manual, runs like a champ now. Have you heard of factory torqued bolts loosening like that or more likely previous owner? Subscribed, thanks for your useful content.

Mine did the same thing, along with the shift indicator light not working until battery voltage was back to normal. My engine light was the p0420 converter codes cause mine were removed
Going to try this. I think I missed the step about the manual key release. Anyway 2005 CTS original owner 2nd time this happened to me in about 3 years. First time the dealer bent me over hit me hard and didn't even buy me a drink. Yesterday happened 2nd time able to bring it to a lot I parked in. Hope to get the key out. First Caddy but when you google CTS key stuck and see all the angry responses going to check out either a Camry or Accord.
Im having a problem figuring out whats wrong with my 2004 cts it is a 3.2 tho. They key turn over and ticks. Lights still all come on, and all lights on my dashboard, security light blinks over and over. I have been driving in second gear when I normally drive in automatic. I think it died out from my AC/heater running, cus it would start shaking when I had them running. The battery is pretty new bought on 4/20. New coils, spark plug, mass air intake or whatever that is called.
Have you had the codes scanned on the car?
I did a month or so ago, not recently tho.

Well my dash board flashes, my anti theft is on, and it says my battery is bad but just bought on 4/20. And my fuel injectors look flooded.

Check fusible link...its between alternator and starter. Computer is picky about low voltage and those links are notorious for failure. Its like 200 or 250 amp.

Hi there. It is jennie from canada. The gal with keys that got stuck in ignition. Got them out. Got car started and she worked couple days. Been very cold here but has warmed. Have tryed to boost her and she wants to go but not fully. What should i do. What could be the issue. New battery. The battery was new last yr. I was trying to install a Bluetooth Module on my Daughters 05 CTS and I got this lock out. Got the key out then tried your Jump and it just turned over but no start. When I close the door and try to start, the locks go up and down?

Juliette Niner since I'm not sure what the Bluetooth thing is, did you have the radio or OnStar stuff disconnected? Is it flashing or showing a security light?
Hello, it’s an aftermarket Bluetooth module that takes the place of XM. I was trying to find a good Acc Hot. I have taken out the small ignition plug before and it was the same thing but as soon as I plugged it back it, I could turn the key off and start.
I saw a code on the radio but didn’t see a theft light. I was in a rush and panicked bec I had to go to work with a broke car.

Mike Lopez something is way wrong. If the car hasn't physically been in an accident you're going to have to get a scan tool and read body control module codes

This is meant to be used in case you let the battery drain a bit. If this is a recurring problem, look at your battery, alternator grounds, or possibly PCM. In this case, I let the car sit about a week or so and the battery wasn't dead, but was below normal voltage.
Assy McGee first thank you for the quick reply. & second I have an 08 cts not sure if theyre the same but my key got stuck in the ignition & it won’t let me take it out. I’m no mechanic but I find it weird that this would happen bcz of a dead battery!? I guess I could take the battery out & go get it tested anyhow. I had the same problem you had just today, the funny thing is I was picking up my car from the dealer ship. I took it in for a repair, but when I picked it up the car wouldn't start and the key got stuck. I left it there cause all the mechanics had left for the day. I'm going in morning tomorrow. My question is why did it get stuck and not release is it cause my battery is low ? ? the portable charger read my battery at 12.4 and that it was low.

Good possibility, they are the stealership. What year, engine, and what symptoms is your car suffering from? Btw, when I broke down and put a PCM in the car in the video, it was $275 from O'Reilly's and $100 for a local guy to come flash it, and yes you have to have it flashed, security system and stuff
Assy McGee the symptoms are I tried to turn the ignition to turn the car on and no crank no start, the anti theft light starts blinking and a sound with it something said on the middle where you read the temp and battery voltage and all the other things but I didn't read it when I tried to turn it on 3 days ago. After that The dealer ship told me that sometimes it turns on and sometimes it doesn't. I have to wait till the manager comes in tomorrow to argue with him that they want me to pay for a new ECM module.
It sounds like the antitheft part of the ECM went bad. You can change it yourself with a 10mm and a torx bit set, I think it's a t30. Get a new ECM and make sure you have someone other than the dealer capable of flashing it. It literally takes 10 minutes to change
I had the same problem with an 04 Cadillac cts 3.6L key stuck in the ignition and doesn't communicate with the obd scanner. I took it to the dealership and was told I need a new ecu. This problem happened probably when someone was changing the battery and put the + on - so be careful.
First, you make some good points, however, that ECU issue is usually accompanying a skip in the engine and battery dead overnight. ECU problems usually don't tell on themselves. If the scanner won't communicate, check the fuse box, usually it's the same as the cigarette lighter fuse.
2005 CTS 2.8L Car was sitting and battery went dead. Took out battery and had it tested, needed new battery. Saved up a few weeks to get new battery and installed. Car does not start, theft light on in dash, key stuck. Would sitting too long with no battery damage ECM?

You mean the alarm is going off?

I would think yes. If your key isn't programmed to the car it would run for 3-4 seconds and shut off

everyone realizes without the car on front of me and using my diagnosis scanner there's only so much I can do, right? I think buttons 2 and 6 on the radio will get you to the codes readout and they can be cleared from there
I have a 2004 Cadillac SRX 4.6 runs and starts fine, but cannot get the key out so I have to use the ball point pen method to remove the key. Is there a simple fix to this or is it a dealership required fix?
Well, a determined guy could pull the bottom column cover off, take the little sheet metal rocker(that's what you actually push with the pen) as it pulls a pin down, hold the pin down and use a small zip tie to permanently hold the pin down. I actually broke the rocker thing on my first cts. I cut a hole big enough to reach in and pull it down with a finger. Pulling the column cover, zip tie down, and replace column cover is probably the better repair, but that first cts was a pile and I didn't care about a hole under the column.
@@assymcgee2835 I wanted to thank you for the idea. I took the steering wheel column off (what a chore) and put the zip tire around the piece the rocker pushes down preventing it from going back up. The key goes in and out great now. Thanks again for the idea, I could not be happier with the solution.

Do you put the ball point pen in the hole underneath the steering column for manual key release?
SHIFTER SLAYER I might have missed responding to you. The pen is poked GENTLY into the hole you remove the little plastic plug from, under the steering column. I can't stress gently enough. I broke it on one of my other CTS and had to cut a hole big enough to work the plunger for the key release.

It needs to run awhile, at least 30 minutes, you have to let the alternator do it's job. Two minutes isn't going to work

Down between the battery box and the engine you'll find a fusible link in the battery cable, check that first
Btw, I have the exact same pos and same prob- I started jumping the starter relay with a paperclip with the key on and it starts then put the relay back in. I had to do this a few times and now it starts every time- obviously an iffy ground somewhere. just keep a paperclip in the console.

Trying to program some new keyless entry fobs, and my hazard lights wont go off now and the service Anti theft System light flashes across the Radio dash. Is there a way to reset this without the dealer ? or is this an expensive fix from the dealer?

Kenny Mac I've always used a scan tool, I don't know of a back way to program them. Try disconnect the battery for about 15 minutes and see if that clears it up

I have an 03 CTS and my car always start with one turn of the ignition. However, after my mechanic changed my manifold gaskets which was leaking oil into my spark plugs causing my vehicle to smoke, the vehicle no longer started when I cranked it. The mechanic then connected a wire from the starter to the battery terminal that started my car. He stated that I needed a starter brush set replaced. Had I seen this video prior to I would have asked him to use your method. What should i do now and do you think it may be my relay rather than the starter?
If the starter works with a jumper wire then I would look at the relay or possibly he unplugged something and didn't know it. Bad brushes and it won't crank at all
I tried your method and it cranked up right away so I assume it must be the relay that don't work. I'll buy another relay and see how it goes. You should do more videos on the CTS so people like me can do our own mechanic work on our car.

I purchased a brand new relay, however, my car still doesn't crank up until I bridge the relay terminal again. I also noticed that my speedometer isn't working and for a brief moment my accelerator wasn't responding after pressing down on it. My alarm does come on and am able to disarm it. I believe the mechanic must have unplugged a wire or something from my starter when he ran the wire to the battery and must not have put it back the right way. What do you think the problem could be?
Ok, first things first. Check your battery and connection if you haven't already done so. These cars get real pissy if the battery is below like 13.5. I actually charged the battery for this particular car overnight on a trickle charger and it still wouldn't start by itself, and the battery read 12.5. Also, with all these newer cars, check and clean all the grounds you can find

Joseph M the reason these cars do this is low battery voltage. first check your battery connection. second obviously make sure your battery isn't messed up/shorted internally or otherwise junk. third check your driver information center on the radio while you're driving and keep an eye on your battery voltage for a possible alternator issue. these won't crank if your voltage is below like 13.5. I charged mine on a trickle charger overnight but the charger only put it at 12.5 so I had to do this so the car could charge it to it's desired voltage

You can use any primary wire available at the parts store. Key has to be in 'run' position. You might have a problem with it reading the chip in the key

I'd guess either the alternator isn't charging fully, you have a drain somewhere, or the starter relay went bad

Juan Mejia unlikely. I had an 03 that did the exact same thing your car was doing, also had a dead miss/skip to the engine. my bet there is a replacement PCM. I never fixed my 03, it was a rebuilt wreck and basically a piece of junk. 03 seems to be it's own animal, alot different from an 04 even though side by side they look identical

Only the 03 cars would let you check and clear codes without the reader. You can use the info center on the stock radio and watch the voltage. If it's not 14.5 or better then it's the alternator, whether it tested good or not

I would guess you fixed it by now, and I'm not real familiar with the DTS, only worked on one that new so far that needed a water pump and thermostat. Any gm with that stabilitrak has the wheel speed sensors running the throttle body. Yes you read that right. Just a guess would be that throttle body
Assy McGee lol i have not yet but things point to the ECM so i been saving some money to buy it and get it programmed
Just a note, some places like O'Reilly's offer the pcm that needs programming, AutoZone, as much of a bad joke as those fools are offer it pre programmed. If they ask you for the VIN and mileage it's pre programmed. However, even my local guy that only does programming had to run the security software three times before it took to my car. That could be a problem on pre programmed pcms. Also, per Derek that worked for GM, changing the pcm is part of their troubleshooting. Exhaust all other cost effective troubleshooting before resorting to the PCM. Meaning if the dealership says it needs a PCM right off the bat, they don't really know what's actually wrong with a car
Assy McGee definitely when they put the obd 2 on it the code p1682 comes up which could be the ignition switch which ive changed, the wiring could be faulty it was checked and nothing out of the ordinary then changed out a few relays and still wants to start but does not it cranks and then cuts off as its about to start so they were pretty adamint about the pcm/ecm idk im good with changing out parts but electrical stuff drive me crazy hahaa
I changed alternator, plugs, fuel injectors, fuel filter, new battery. Jumped starter relay and its cuts right off. Key gets stuck every time. Any suggestions???
QAM YASHARAHLA that actually sounds like the security system. cranking and running for a second or two then dieing. I'll research that a bit deeper. still check all your grounds, clean your pcm connection and add a LITTLE dielectric grease to them.

Right before I brought new ecu because my car would crank or anything after replacing battery
Swapped one fuse got it to crank
Swapped main computer fuse and she cranked right up

The car won't even start?
I have an 05 the brakes went bad and it set for a couple of months. Went to start it and the key Was stuck and the battery was bad. Changed the battery and it fired right up. It was the front brake lines from the master cylinder to the anti lock break Box. changed those but had a hard time getting to them so took the antilock break Box off and got everything fixed. Put everything together and now the car won't start and the key gets stuck every time. Your trick with the key worked . But now the car won't start. using the wire it will crank But it will not fire up. What now? Help

Antionette Evans bottom of steering column. Look under there, it should have a little black cap with a slot, 1/4 turn and it pops out. Paperclip or something gently pushed in will release the key. Don't push too hard. I broke that on my old CTS.

Giraudo Flavien i never tried it on a 3.2, it may work just fine, however I haven't tried it and the PCM seems to work differently in this cars.

@@jenballendine8132 I went and checked my 2003 in the driveway. There are three holes in the middle of the bottom column cover between the steering wheel and knee panel. It's the hole closest to the wheel, slightly smaller than it's neighbor. Luckily I had one of the cars at home and not parked them all at the shop

I hate my 2007 CTS ... its been nothing but a money pit and now my key is stuck in ignition and im being told I have to replace my knock sensors cause it will not go from 2nd to 3rd sometimes and to top it off all 4 windows stopped going up and down and the suggested fix is in some wiring under the carpet in passenger side back floorboard. Im about to just take a loss and sell it for what I can get. =0(
The windows is definitely the wiring under the pass side rear carpet. Or the master switch. Never heard of knock sensors preventing transmission shifts. I understand your frustration but you have to remember a used car is only as good as the maintenance it received before you owned it. That gray car in the video was very nice appearing but was a total pile of crap. The black 04 cts in some of my other videos was a 600 dollar pile and it has required some repair but very reliable

NIGHTMARE FOXY it's just a piece of wire. Just plain electrical wire. 14 to 12 gauge will do just fine. Available at any hardware store or advance, AutoZone, O'Reilly's, pep boys, whatever is convenient

I have 07 cts says service theft system and gas gauge, temperature don't work and car with lock light is on. Please help, ive tried resetting codes with scan tool but it didn't work

It's starting and driving but I have to use key release to get key out but it's still driving fine. Gas or temperature gauge don't register
Jaritza Colon ok first like I tell everyone that has a problem with these cars. have the battery charged and tested, check and double check battery connection and main grounds. These cars go completely bonkers if the voltage isn't just right. let the car sit and hour or so to let the ECM reset with the battery completely disconnected. those are the first two things to try. a bad pcm or pcm connection could also be the issue. always check battery connection and have it loads tested first because most Auto parts stores do the charge and test FREE. Also remember the pimply teenage moron at the parts store IS NOT A MECHANIC.

Last resort before a possible pcm replacement is this. Requires no tools, one spray can of electrical cleaner and a tube of dielectric grease. Both available at any Auto parts or hardware store. Pull the two pcm connection clean them both and apply a Small amount of dielectric grease to the wiring plugs. Do this with the battery completely disconnected for at least ten minutes

Ok I have a 05 cts v6 was listening to some music then all of sudden it went dead it cranks 2 to 3 times lights work my display screen work but now it's not.

Assy McGee, have same problem and i jump it like in your video every morning. During the day its OK and starts normally, but after some time no more. When i put key inside and turn first step, lights are not there. So, i think the problem is during the key put inside or in this first step. My starter relay is OK, i have new Battery, i have changed Ignition starter switch (not Selenoid, just switch)... same problem :( what can you suggest? Important thing is: this problem comes not every time! only after some hours. for example: if i jump it from starter relay (like in your video), after that i can turn it of and start again with key 20-30 times and no problem! only after some hours problem comes again. Please, Help, if you can
Check the alternator output. Has to be above 13.8 colts, or you have something slowly draining the battery

@@amadeosanchez9323 was out of town a few days. Is it not getting fuel? Try a can of starting fluid, just spray a little while it cranks. If it tries to run you got a fuel issue or it's not firing the injectors
People, Help :) i have same problem, but only every morning. if i start my CTS (2004 V6, 3.6) during the day more times, it works, but if i start only in the morning and evening, problem is there. i have changed battery - same problem. in the past, this problem came only one time in 3-4 months. now every day: i mean no start no cranck, key stucks in ignition, no temperature and petrol signs working, "service theft system" on display. after this i start motor with taking out starter relay and starting from there... so, Crank sensor? Theft system? ECM change? Help, please.

also...is the shift indicator lights working? low battery voltage or a trashed ecm could be the problem. and wiggle the shifter, sometimes the car doesn't think it's in park and won't release the key. it SOUNDS like battery or ECM. batteries cheap, ECM is expensive if you can get a reman without sending yours in first

I was just at the fuel station and a woman had this exact problem with an 03, first thing I did was check the battery cables, she was pulling fuses and relay under the hood and said it happened before. I went to my pickup to grab my phone to Google the issue, I came back and told her what I found, she was frantic still trying wiggle fuses and relays after she tried this a few times she got in the car and it started but as it was cranking over it was not a consistent crank it paused 2 or 3 times then turned over and fired up. I am a mechanic, but I haven't ever worked on this system before. Crazy as it sounds I wish I would have had more time to find out what she did and why it wasn't cranking consistently
old timer unsure on the inconsistent crank, but hard restart after getting gas is the evap purge valve. Pass side by the battery. 10mm holds it to the upper plenum. Five minutes to change one out
Assy McGee it wasn't a hard restart, just inconsistent like a bad connection, I'm curious as to what she pulled that reset the security lockout. The light was on on the display. Thanks for the video though

SC, NC, Georgia, someplace I can have them delivered on a transfer truck reasonably. I don't want major crash damage or disease carrying interiors.
