I built my riser a year ago and put Jamo S 808 low profile subwoofers under each seat. There are three theater seats in the front row and the riser in the back has 4 more theater recilners. I created "port holes" in the box and aligned the holes to be exactly under the seats, so the bass could easily hit the bottom of my home theater seats and listener could easily feel the rumble and the vibrations. The results are very impressive. Everyone who has watched a movie or a game in my home theater is thoroughly impressed. These under the seat subs are other than the regular subs that I have. By the way I picked these subs up (7 of them, 3 for the front row and 4 for the rear raised seats for $600 out the door). My only concern was how the heat is going to be dissipated but so far I have had no issues with the sub amps overheating. I have all the amps set permanently at 50% output only and don't overdrive them.
Sounds like a pretty killer setup! I always wanted to put subs in my couches and recliners. I recently put one in our sectional upstairs and it works out great but I have yet to try one in any of the theater seating. And it sounds like you really scored on your purchase. Nice!
This video is great along with all the others showing how to build a home theater riser. However, word to others who want to build one of these, we followed the instructions here and again, very good if you've never had the pleasure of building one (sarcasm). Once you're done though, this thing is VERY HEAVY!!! We built ours to put 3 home theater seats so it was probably a bit longer than the one built in this video. So make sure you either build it in pieces or just build the entire thing where it's going to live. We did ours in the garage and then moved it to the theater room. Luckily I had my two grown boys to help me transport it. Nonetheless, the instructions here are great, can't go wrong if you have some tools, a way to transport the wood (we had to rent a truck) and definitely take your time.
Really awesome video, some great tips. I love the way you did the corners on your carpet piece, that is probably the hardest part of getting the carpet to fit together seamlessly. The only thing that I would mention, is to have your electrical line in come kind of conduit, you don't want just electrical wire hanging out in the room, but this is just my personal opinion, other than that everything came out perfect.
Thank you for doing this video. You have completely inspired me to build my own riser for my home theater 2nd row of seats. I was going to just purchase pre-built ones from a company, but this is completely doable for me the way you showed it. Thank you!
Nice! I hope it goes great - we're loving ours. If you end up getting some pictures of the finished product, I'd love to see them! Feel free to tag me on any of my @lrn2diy social media accounts and best of luck!
Cool build, thanks for the video! The riser should really have extended to the next row of seating, provide at walkway of some kind. 3ft wide is preferred, 18" bare minimum. Having a little 6" wide lip is weird. And it's probably not really necessary to insulate.
Hi Nils great video. I built a riser just like this a while back. The problem I have is power cord organization for the chairs, especially the front row on the floor. Do you have a way of keeping those clean and out of the way of chair recline movement? Thanks
Great vid. I am about to go get some carpet to install on top of it. Any thoughts on using the staples for the carpet install? I am curious how those have held up. Any loose ones popping out?
It's true. I keep all my scraps from projects so I have more on hand than the average joe but it saves a lot of money on these projects. Looks like prices are finally starting to come back down again - yay!
True... but I am in the midst of RE-Opening my Acting Studio and wanted to BUY professional built Stair Risers... and went into STICKER SHOCK... WOW Super expensive. So this is the next best thing... which I know I can do. I used to "Flip" RVs (17 in the last 30 years) so this would be Great... and CUSTOM too.
oh very nice and thinking of re-doing mine when I get the time. The thick carpet is going to be a harvest for dust. So got vacuum clean each and ever day. I use thin carpet tiles thou my cats think its an extension scratching post to the one in the hallway. Mine was made using bits and pieces put together and has lasted well but, am I unhappy with it and unhappy? I think I keep it I see no sense doing one again and it won't make me feel any happier.
I'm doing something similar and was wondering about your LED lighting. I ordered the Phillips Hue lights that go around our TV but thought it would be good to have the Phillips LED strip lights as well for our seats... Until I saw how much they want for only a 6 ft strip!! Almost $200 for a two pack (2 x 6ft). Do you have any suggestions for the chair lighting? I noticed you are only lighting the front. Our front chairs are approx 6.5 ft and the back is around 7 ft. I might be able to use the Philips Hue 6 ft strip but not go all the way across and possibly center it? I know there are a lot of other cheaper options for LED lighting
Sure thing. The room is 15 1/2’ W x 18 1/2’ D (to back of chairs). The Riser is 10” H x 94” W x 41” D. Two things to note: 1) the distance between the back of the front row and the riser is 34" and 2) when we recline in the back row, the front row folks are in the way unless they're also reclined. As a result, we leave the front row reclined all the time and ask anyone in the front row to stay reclined. Possible solution: make the riser taller (maybe 12-14"?). Best of luck with your build!
Thanks for the very helpful, and simple How-To video. Question. What is the black plug thing-y actually called? It looks like the head of a plug, but you opened it up to expose the fittings to wire to. Can you provide what its actually called or at least the link where I can purchase it from?
Hey Roz, it's usually just listed as a 3 wire plug. Here's a link to the one I used: geni.us/2BIjC. Thanks for bringing that up - I'll add links into the description in case anyone else has the same question. Good luck!
The riser is too short front to back. Needs more foot room to get up and out of the chair. I can see someone falling flat on their face or twisting their ankle if they are in a hurry when getting off of the chairs. I mean the guys foot hangs over the riser.

Good point - these aren’t light at all.
Thank you so much for this video, I was able to build a riser and run the electric thanks to you.
Saved to my HT play list. Thanks for the carpet tips!

Great idea of building your own extension cord !!!
What was the measurement for the space in front of the seats and behind ? How much space did you leave in front and behind of the chairs footprint
🤦♀️ why cant I have a guy like this for a neighbor?
Exactly lol
Dude you aren’t lying lol
DIY guys seem even cooler in their socks.
I love it😍
Nice home theater
Yeah good job. Priority One.. always get the rear seats off the back wall.
I love the set up-where did you get your chairs? I’ve looking for something just like those and have struggled.
Can you provide measurements for the wood you used in this project please?
Great job nice and clear
Next time use carpenter square and place both rugs together, one cut, perfect match.
Good stuff, very helpful. It looks like you simply set the riser on the existing carpet? You didn't secure it to the floor or wall, etc.?
Correct. It just sits on the carpet and is free floating. It weighs so much (especially with the chairs on top) that it hasn’t moved a millimeter.
@@LRN2DIY That's a relief. Thanks so much for your reply. I can't imagine it moving but didn't know if I was simply looking for a shortcut.

So far so great on mine. Zero issues.

What kind of chairs are those in your theater?
as someone that works at a lumber yard it is real lucky that you had spare osb available cause that wood is real expensive now

Where did you get the seating from? How much were they?
I would rather use a decent extension cord than Romex unless it's being wired to a circuit instead of plugged into an outlet.
Thanks for a another great video🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
great video congratulations! What measurements did you use for your platform?

Hello the power your ran for the riser did you run the cord to the closest outlet ?
Where you get that big storm trooper from ??? I WANT !!!
Nice!

which state are you located? You have nice view!
How deep did you make your riser?
WATCH the VIDEO!!!!!
That is the Riser...
The whole video is HOW TO MAKE A RISER.
Why exactly do I need to insulate?
Did the ground wire go on the the green part of the outlet?
Yes, exactly.
Made that roser about 6 inches short
I was thinking the same thing. Should be longer for the step in case people are reclined.
Can I pay u just to build mine
Why need to insulate inside?
If you make a hollow box it's going to echo a lot of noise when you move around. The insulation is to dampen sound.
Need to change your blade at least 3 times for even that small of a project
Who are your seats made by?
They’re Valencia seats - there’s a link in the description. We’re loving them!

Not enough depth on the risers, you just fall off the recliner when you want to get out?.. Haha.
Very much agreed, same thoughts, should go right up to behind the front row.
What if my family is dumb and doesn’t own books ;)
Are those utah mountains?
You know it!
14-2 should NEVER be used for an oulet. Always use 12 guage wire for an outlet. 14 guage is lighting wire.
this dude has no idea what hes doing
How to not build a platform
Any suggestions on how I can improve?
