I took a screenshot of the dog to work with from your video so that I could hopefully tag along and bit-by-bit follow your lead throughout the video. I got as far as the first repair to the dog's tongue which was ok up until I tried to join it using Ctrl Shift + but to no avail. I also tried Path Union but that didn't work either. I've closed Inkscape down several times and tried again and again but it still doesn't work. I'm using the latest version of Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06) I'm just wondering if this is a bug in the software. I even tried just ignoring the fact that I couldn't join the repairs to the gaps and got as far as smoothing out the image as per your video. I brought up Path effects but when I clicked on the + icon to Add a path effect, nothing happened, it's as if the + and _ signs were similar to what happens when a command is greyed out. I don't know if you can throw any light on this but in the meantime I am going to their website and report these 2 issues to see if they know anything about it.

As regards your comments, I am going first of all to uninstall Inkscape & reinstall just in case of some glitch or corruption. I am certain at this stage that I had both the drawing selected and converted the stroke to a path as per your instructions in the video. Can't thank you enough as the video itself is easy & straightforward to follow, just something amiss at my end. I will be back in touch once I have reinstalled Inkscape, followed your video again and see what the outcome is then. Meanwhile, I am grateful for you taking the time to help me out. Jock.
For us beginners, it would be great if you could provide a link so we can obtain the same image you are working on in the video above. This way we could practice on the same image until we can hopefully master the techniques and stroke you demonstrate. In every other respect, it's great video. Thank you.
Good idea. I will try to do that in the future. This was a question that was asked on Troy Young's Inscape facebook page, so I don't really know where the drawing came from. I often just copy the pic and convert by bitmap trace for my videos. :)
Hi again Leigh. Well I uninstalled Inkscape 0.92.2 and reinstalled it and still I can't get the path to join the dog. Out of curiosity, I accessed the default Keyboard and Mouse shortcuts of Inkscape which gives the list shortcuts. Interestingly, the command to convert a 'Stroke to a Path' as you'll see below is shown as: Ctrl + Alt +C convert stroke to path and not Ctrl + Shift + as described in your video. Obviously Ctrl Shift + is the correct command for an earlier version of Inkscape. However, even though I use the Ctrl + Alt+C instead, it still doesn't allow me to join the path to the dog. I'm really stumped and don't know what to do next as I've followed your precise moves you make in your video. Jock, ctrl shift + is union. Don’t know if I misspoke in the video. Double click on the stroke and see if it really converted to a path. If it’s been converted there will be nodes on both sides rather than just down the middle. If you want, you can send me your file and I can see if I can tell what’s going on. Sleighwhitaker@gmail.com
Hi Anne. I'm not sure what you mean by overlapping nodes. If you'd like, you can send me your file and I will take a look at it. Generally it cuts as shown in outline view. Wherever there is a line in outline view, that is a cut line when you bring it over to DS. Anyway, feel free to send me the file at sleighwhitaker at gmail. com and I'll take a look at it for you.

Hi Jock, did you convert the stroke to a path before trying to union?
And for doing the path effects, make sure you have the drawing selected before clicking the + key.
