This is exactly what I've been looking to do with a hand drawn pattern for my laser. Thank you for saving my sanity and for a truly user friendly instructional tutorial!
PERFECT! I downloaded and installed Inkspace to do ONLY exactly this for a shape I scanned for 3d printing. I accomplished my task only 10 mins after installing Inkspace (and never having seen Inkspace before... ever), due to this video.
You are amazing!!! I have been searching for a way to even out the borders of a drawn diagram and came up empty until I saw this gem of a video lesson. Thanks!
I've been thinking about downloading and learning Inkspace for a while now, but I think this has sold me on it!! TFS and for explaining it all so easy!!
PERFECT simple explanation. Just what I was looking for. I'm starting to scan my rubber/clear stamp collection and want to be able to cut them using Design Space (rather than purchasing another machine just to do this *coughScannCut*) I was pretty sure Inkspace could handle what I needed and in 5 minutes you had me up and going! Thanks! You have a new subscriber. :)
@@TroyTube really? it starts off clear then sounds like it drags. then clears up and then drags. cant' think why I am the only one it does that for. I used cc anyways.
Thx. Just a question. How can I make the line of the ghost image thinner? I use a laser to cut out my shapes, but sometimes the lines are to thin or thick for the image that I want to use.
This was great. Thank you. Are there any similar instructions for an image with more colours? I want to remove the background and smooth out the pixelated edges, but when I try to use these instructions, most of the colours disappear from the image. I've tries setting the colours to 256 instead of 2, but I cant set them any higher than that.
it seems that the inkscape has changed. When i follow the directions given I don't get the options you mention. Do you have a tutorial for the new version? Thanks!
Well, the idea of vector graphics is that they are scalable so the thickness is going to scale with the design. To do this you'd have to set that size and make your design the exact size from the start. You might be able to do that with a bezier tool and/or using a stroke and setting the thickness.
Hello, I have a simple image of the number 1776 with a border around it and small lines bording the numbers but when i clean it up in DS and save it to cut, the letters and smaller lines blur together, so i tried this video and it helps a little bit but still getting the blurred lines. Any advice?
Troy. I love your video on Tracing and Leaning Up Simple Images in Inkscape. My problem is adding color and saving it to a SVG file for Rmbird Studio. I'm going from Image to SVG to PES to making a Embroidery Design. I really need your help. I have the image in Bitmap and JPeg and PNG. I have Paint that came with my computer. Hopefully you can help.Thank you Rhoda
Troy, how can I remove the middle of letters from an image that I imported? I imported a saying that was a black and white image. After tracing the bitmap, I was left with the black backround and white letters. I then broke it apart and deleted the black backround but then the middle of my letters were all black, making it a solid letter shape. How do I remove the middle of the letters? I did manage to select the nodes and make the middles white but when going to design space, the middles were all white, not cut out from the letters. Sorry, I do not know if this makes sense to you.
After tracing the bitmap, is there any way to make the lines thinner? So, in this video, if the lines shaping the ghost were 7 pixels thick, is there any way to make them 5 pixels thick?
Hi troy! I'm brand new to cricut and design space and am currently trying inkscape! I followed this video to attempt to clean up some images, but could not get it to work! I'm very confused on what I could be doing wrong!
You can use inset or outset to adjust the thickness but it can get wonky and I don't think you can every really get an exact measurement on something like that without a lot of work and adjustments.
Help! I followed your instructions exactly, but I cannot open the file from my computer after I download it. I'm very frustrated. Wondering if you've run into that before?
How can I remove the background from around my image yet keep the white or cream colors that are part of the photo. For instance - I have a jpeg with a white square background. My image inside that has white details. When I use Inkscape to remove the background - it removes the white detail so they are see through.... Can you help, please??
I am having a difficult time getting my saved images into inkscape. I went to google images too, but everything keeps showing up as a box with an X inside it. I don't know where to get more images without copying something I may not suppose to.
I'm trying to find the image of the ghost so I can follow along with you and learn how to do this. Do you know where/how I can find it? I tried googling it and came up with all kinds of others, but didn't find this one.
i'm very new to everything lol. i tried the other ghost you shared with regina. it didn't clean up. i don't know what i did wrong thought i did all your steps.help
I seem to run into problems that are simple to fix but very frustrating when I can't figure it out myself. I hope this is one of them. An image I turned into an SVG file had gaps between the lines that had to be closed for cutting purposes. I used the node tool, and maybe that was the wrong one to use, but it closed the gaps and looked great until I took it into DS. Where the gaps I had closed overlapped it showed up as white areas on the black lines. Is there a way to get rid of those white areas? Thanks so much!
I don't think the base layer is the problem because it's just an outline and it has turned out fine. The problem is that it has broken lines that have to be joined or it won't separate from the background when it's cut. I used the node tool to join the edges so it's one complete piece and it looks good except that once imported into DS there is tiny white areas where the separate pieces have overlapped where they have been joined. Is there a better way to join broken lines than using the node tool and still keep my outlined image with no fill? Thank you!
New people need to do these things with more complicated images every time I watch a video from you type of people you are using simple little dumb images that of course these things are going to work with. I am trying this on M image right now that's not majorly complicated but it's more complicated than a simple dumb little ghost and it's not working
The purpose of the video is to teach basic concepts as are most of my Inkscape videos. Beyond the how-to type tutorials there is a lot of subjectivity that has to be considered because every image and case is different.
Where has this tutorial been all my life?!?! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
ikr!
This is exactly what I've been looking to do with a hand drawn pattern for my laser. Thank you for saving my sanity and for a truly user friendly instructional tutorial!
The Simplify command!! The magic bullet. Thanks so much for this Troy.

Excelent tutorial, very easy to understand and follow. Thanks.

This video is exactly what I've been searching for! This is going to save me sooooo much time!!!! Thank you Troy!
You're welcome! I also have a full e-Learning course on version 1.2.1 that's available on my site at bulkvinyl.com :)
This was such a helpful, straightforward tutorial. Thank you so much!
Thanks again, Troy. I always appreciate how you demystify Inkscape for beginners and share tips for more advanced users, too.
EXCELLENT tutorial. Thank you very much!
Thank you, Troy! You've been a wealth of information! I'm so thankful for your videos!
I've been thinking about downloading and learning Inkspace for a while now, but I think this has sold me on it!! TFS and for explaining it all so easy!!
THANK YOU! The finished piece turned out great! I was having such a hard time trying to describe it so it would make sense, so thank you again!
Thank you SO much. I really needed this!
Thank you very much for this video. Short, and great. Had success with this after fumbling through photoshop and illustrator.
I was still able to use this this tip today! Amazing! Thank you!
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR! Ty, great vid!
Thank you so much! Been struggling converting old templates of mine, you're a life saver!
Thank you, Troy! Newbie here & I am learning so much from your videos!
Thank you! Very helpful and easy to follow!
Soooo helpful!! Thank you for making this

thanks Troy!
Thank you so much for doing this video!
Great job! The answers I needed.
great tutorial! you are a great teacher.
This is a great video!! thanks forr posting it. Can something be done about the sound?
Thank you for the kind comment. Sound is pretty clear to me?

I need to clean up an image for silkscreening on a thermofax screen mesh...is there a program for this? Or would I need to buy a cricket?
it seems that the inkscape has changed. When i follow the directions given I don't get the options you mention. Do you have a tutorial for the new version? Thanks!
Awesome tutorial, thank you for taking the time to make.
Thank you. Ya, offset requires too much trial/error. Is there a different design program that can change lines to a specific thickness?
Well, the idea of vector graphics is that they are scalable so the thickness is going to scale with the design. To do this you'd have to set that size and make your design the exact size from the start. You might be able to do that with a bezier tool and/or using a stroke and setting the thickness.
I think this vid answers my previous question. Thanks! 👍🏽
Many thanks, this saved me a lot of time!

What type of image is the ghost before .svg? Did you import a .jpeg or bmp .png?
I believe that was a jpg but it doesn't really matter.
After tracing the bitmap, is there any way to make the lines thinner? So, in this video, if the lines shaping the ghost were 7 pixels thick, is there any way to make them 5 pixels thick?
What version are you using? I don't show a preview in the window.
This was probably 0.91 but they are all the same. Make sure you have the image selected on your canvas.
What version was this done with? I have 1.2.2 and it is quite different.
Probably 0.91 or something like that but it's still the same process. The trace dialog has more options, use the second tab and select colors.

Amber Fracisco you have replies turned off so I cannot reply to your comment. You probably need a higher resolution image.

+Lily Hammel You might want to watch this video with how to create a base layer from one with cut-outs in it.

+Lily Hammel Path / Union once you join them. I misunderstood the issue.
I did the exact steps you said here and when I place it in Design Space. It says unsupported SVG file.
Thanks
I have a file that I'm trying to clean up. Can you tell me what to do? I can message it on our DS
thank you very helpful
What format does the photo have to be in? My photo wont update when I try to trace
Did you move the top layer away after you did "trace bitmap"?
thank you so much!

yikes perfect but i don't see how to save it as any "common" files like jpg,png etc
