Mindful tips on how to run on a Plant-based diet with Scott Jurek, world-famous ultra-marathon champion and Waylon Lewis, eco nachos champion.
thanks for the video. im a 43 yr old retired super heavyweight Powerlifter. been running and walking everyday for the last 2 months and am enjoying my new hobby. ive lost some decent weight; was near 400lbs at 6’3”. i’m in love with this new way of life, RUNNING!
I'm 6'3", 43 years old, and once weighed 370. And my dad was a powerlifter 🤣🤣
Scott is such a legend....the other dude reminds me of Quentin Tarantino....great interview bud
aw thanks, I tried! Scott is good stuff.
reading the Scott's book right now. He is amazing! thank you for the interview
Tatyana Mishchenko Great book hope you liked it!
+Tatyana Mishchenko It's an inspiring read, I totally recommend it even for non runners!
I've got Scott's book in my Amazon cart right now! I have another running book, "The Perfect Mile," to finish first.. :) hey, it looked like Scott may be releasing a 2nd book soon? not sure but I think that's what I saw on Amazon today...
I'm currently on page 70 - I wanted to but a face to his voice
First time on this channel. Luving the humor!!
Love the gold shorts ;-) Good info as well! Thankyou!
What an amazing guy! Love listening to him, he is just amazing as a human being and as an athlete of course
Great interview, Scott is great. But dear Mr. Lewis, where did you find these shorts?!?!
just got off my 4.5 mile trail run for the day (nothing compared to Scott~) but, this is like heaven to get his tips directly from him. I feel so lucky right now. the heel / forefront stuff was gold... just seeing him demonstrate with his own two legs was worth a million to me. thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed the whole thing! good personalities from both guys too :)
Jurek is the best. Such a great champion/ambassador of the sport.
hell yea
I love this video and Scott! I would love to have the chance to run with him and tap into that running knowledge.
He's incredibly friendly and down-to-earth-and GOAT
Great video! I've read Scott's book, so this is nothing new, but it is great to heart it straight from the horse's mouth, or should I say the deer/venado's mouth :)
Amaranth and buckwheat are also vegan protein staples. Sprout 4 cups of buckwheat and mix with date paste (dates and water in blender) with some salt and Ceylon Cinnimon and throw in in the dehydrator for 24 hours.
🎯
Thanks for sharing and Thank You Scott for your time! Not a vegan or Ultra runner yet, but working on it as I head into my 40's soon..😬
4 years later. You compete in any ultraruns yet? What's the update?
I picked up trail running 10+ years ago when I turned 58 which coincided with eating on whole foodss plant based. This last wknd did a trifecta of trail runs at competition…5k fri, 1/2 marathon Saturday n 10k Sunday with total of 3,000’+ elevation gain plus downhill…eating to live and thrive has made such a difference in our lives ….good luck my friend 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
8 years later, how’s the running been? What’s the update?
Nice, I want to get a pair of Brooks PureGrit 3. I love Brooks shoes!!!
Good interview
Scott looks like he wants to stop talking and get running down that trail.
Was thinking the same thing
Seriously. But he's actually really inspired about teaching this stuff--he's a thoughtful generous guy. And we did run, a bit. Hardly anything for him, of course.
Elephant Journal Man I would love to run with him, congrats!
+An Sha He's a born racehorse, it doesn't suit him standing around in the stable!
I would Like To run with Scott Jurek too See John Run.
Great tips and information. Thank you.
Good video, I enjoyed it thanks!!
Not enjoying the protein discussion at 8:45, how is protein powder easier to locate then beans?
Incorrect information on protein too. All whole foods contain protein.
I like to go with a teaspoon of raw caraway seeds. high in glycine and its got a good name. ua-cam.com/video/A9hcJgtnm6Q/v-deo.html
@@sowyouthinkyoucanplant5630 most whole foods except soy and few exotic foods have incomplete or not enough protein.
@@sowyouthinkyoucanplant5630 the Raramuri run ultras for fun off corn and beans
Was waiting for the question on how to eat while on a competition race whether marathon or adventure run as i guess you may risk appendicitis (though studies do not readily find link to running in full stomach) in my own opinion.
Great advice
great stuff!
Great interview!
As a vegan runner on a 90/5/5 diet I am wondering: What does he need all that protein for? The lower limit for humans is 2.5% of total calories. You can not get that low if you eat whole foods. Example: Bananas have 4% protein, including all essential amino acids. WHO recommendation is 5%, that is 2.5% + 100% safety margin - more than plenty!
Taking into account that most vegetables and greens are much higher in protein (examples: Tomato ~15%, kale ~15%), I find it sometimes difficult to stay below 10%, especially whenever we have beans, peas or lentils. It is very easy to get above 10% which seems to be too much: Body odor comes back, energy levels and recovery times are not as good...
exactly! it's the "protein" brainwash from the fitness industry.. still working though
No
Is 60g of protein a day adequate? Running a few hours a day, 60g doesn't seem like a lot
Each time i go on a plant based diet i seem to lose energy and my workouts suffer....thoughts please...thanks.
Plant-based diets are less dense in calories than other dietary patterns. You probably aren't eating enough calories. Focus on grain, legumes, and tubers (starches -- foods rich in complex carbohydrates) for the staples of your diet.
I totally agree with UrbaneScorpion... It sounds like you are not getting enough calories. My personal pre-workout snack is a handful of dates and a banana. I blend it up with rice milk (and occasionally add a teaspoon of matcha). Totally fires me up :)
+teambanana.com Thanks for your reply...will start again tomorrow...doing lots of strength training these days....early morning workout [4:00 a.m.]...not too hungry at that time of day...try to have a big breakfast....hungry during middle of night.
Thanks for the great interview. Can you please give Pinback credit for Loro? This is just a cover.
davefanatic06 happy to! I'll ask Rachel--I think this cover comes through the songs youtube offers.
Elephant Journal This cover really stood out to me as beautiful! Can you please share who did this?
Scott Jurek is fucking AWESOME!
The song you hear is from Pinback originally. Way better than this mix. Song's called pinback
This was a great and informative video. Very valuable! But man you gotta give Hulk Hogan his britches back! ;)
I will run from him, falling forward, relaxed, upright, with feet landing gently beneath me.
Love those gold shorts! Tx.
Cute shorts Waylon!xx
Are you wearing gold shorts?
Burning Man is not an excuse, but it is a reason.
is here Scott really wearing Garmin Fenix 1 ? :-D I have had those :-)
I find Waylon to be annoying with his constant interruption and injected humor. Its almost like he is asking the questions but has no care in the world of what the person answer the question has to say.
+Michael Phillips it's a conversation, not an interview. Sorry you disliked it.
I thought it was just a fun style of video! and it showed that waylon was interested and engaged in the topic. a conversation not an interview, I like that. and i learned a ton from the content itself, too
He’s asking the questions he thinks his viewers will want to know answers to. He does a fine job and it seems a bit rushed to get everything in but it’s a good, informative video.
Hes just listening and participating
The interviewer is a jealous jerk huh? 16:28
Such a lovely golden shorts)))))
Ha! Completely unrelated of course, but I just noticed that Scott looks like Patt Cassels from College Humor.
To be honest with you I think everybody should know how to run and how to eat.
OMG wow am I an idiot... I have major pain in the balls of my feet and super tired calves after all of my runs... guess what part of this resonated with me xD
Of course my hero Scott Jurek would know!! Thank you for this video!!!
This video would have been 10x better without him constantly interrupting Scott, just be quiet and let him finish.
I disagree with Scott a bit about protein and worrying about the other individual components of the diet. As long as you're eating whole plant foods including lots of leafy greens, you're going to get more than enough protein, fatty acids, etc. I'd also recommend avoiding oil, which is nothing but a processed food, extremely calorically dense, and nutritionally deficient.
I used to think that but it doesn't work for me since I don't eat too many carbs. Building an aerobic base teaches the body to prioritise burning fat and protein as fuel, as opposed to carbohydrates. If I don't supplement with a protein drink - I use either wheatgrass or hemp powder in a smoothie - I get pretty gaunt.
That sounds like a nice problem to have. I run about 30 mpw, soon to be increased to about 50. Carbs have sustained me so far, but I'll definitely keep your comment in mind.
@ Stephen ; can't go too wrong with a top quality extra virgin olive oil...
Stephen Otto Far too calorically dense without sufficient nutrition to show for it. And like I said, whether it is virgin or not, it will damage endothelial cells. We've got an epidemic of heart disease in this country, and it isn't just due to animal products. I think oil is equally to blame.
Stephen Otto Don't you want to eat caloriicly dense food so your body has energy. So wouldn't fat be a go to choice.
Is host sportin wood on those gold lame's
let's focus on the important things
running is basically controlled falling LOL
the guy in the light blue muscle shirt looks like Ryan from Rooster Teeth
Окей, вот как выглядит человек, который может пробежать 160 км.
Scott hardly moves, stable stance as he stands talking and Waylon is constantly fidgeting!!
Mayyyybe it's kinda nervous-making and exciting to be around such a great runner and human. ~ Way
The interviewer looks so uninterested and is totally closed off. Luckily it’s Scott doing most of the talking - he seems so nice and open /)
I'm honestly just doing my best to get through a lot of points we want to hear from Scott on, keep it fun and accessible, without dumbing down his great depth of knowledge. It's hard!
totally interested. Scott is great. I just suck at interviewing, sometimes. Thanks!
Legend Scott,go vegan 🌱
run on an iphone
the host should at least put on a t-shirt without holes in it!
Jan Vdw my grandma agrees. But seriously--that shirt is from Waylon Willie etc down in Texas in the 80s! It's holy.
ok then :-)
where the f do you put your arms then?!
Fair enough the interviewers trying but this comes across real amateur, clearly not a runner though
No I'm not-but this video is meant for many, like myself, who could use an accessible video.
Hey now gatekeeper, it's more than okay for we amateurs to enjoy and learn about running.
Goldmember has no idea how to have a damn conversation.
True. And you have no idea how to comment critically but respectfully, anonymous.
To much side chatter by host 🤔🥴
Yuck, vegans every where. I'm joking :D I'm a vegan, too, but I'm also a meat eater. Best of both worlds :D
Says they're a vegan. Then in same sentence says they're a meat eater. Confusing everyone. That doesn't make sense. As in you were one of those things. Or you're a part time vegan..? Like a flexitarian or something?
You're not vegan then... Lol
I know what your talking about, I was lactose intolerant so I went vegan. I drink a lot of rat milk, have banana as the bulk of my diet, and eat elephant jerky instead of beef. I try not to eat nuts because they are high in fat, instead I eat lean beef.
goes to show how meat messes up the joke abilities. hahahaha
Many people believe the feminisation of western world men is this instigated trend of veggie and vegan'!
I mean I’m not sure? But I can see the train of thought!
This guy is such a douche. I wish he'd just let Scott talk. Awful.
oh no. wheatgrass is now known to be not a healthy choice. top superfood thats not good for us. soy is as well. #sadness
One more reason not to eat animal products since the HUGE majority of soy is fed to them and then consumed by us through them. Less than 5% of soy globally goes to human direct consumption.
I watched it till the "plant based diet". 🙄😁😂
Be like Scott.....dirt poor and zero to contribute.
huh?
