I think a very simple solution to this whole thing would be to simply, replace the grass on the lawn with high-end astroturf. And then whatever underlayment is necessary to protect it from the helicopters down wash. This could be easily done without changing the aesthetic of the lawn itself, and would also allow for the helicopter to land quite easily.
As far as the government is concerned, if sense were common, it wouldn't have a name. I'm sure they could develop an artificial turf that would work, especially since they spend so much on other worthless projects (I worked for the government for 33 years), or they could just build a helipad. Every government building or facility the president flies to outside of the DC beltway has one. Maybe they can even paint it green to match the grass. After the BILLIONS they have spent on this new helicopter program, that would be a drop in the bucket.
@ernie5229 With the money the government spends, I'm sure they could develop something. Again, pave it and paint it green. It's only cost 30 billion so far, and they can't land it in the 1 place that's crucial to its operation? That's the government for you. That's like building a fighter for the Navy, and it can't land on a carrier. Surely, someone thought of this before they tried it. They really can't be that stupid.
While saving we the tax payers million of dollars on redesigning a perfectly good helicopter. Who's ready for DOGE...? Pour a 1000 pad of Crete down paint it green and call it. Or the turf works even better. Both very cheap by comparison.

The Osprey crash cited did NOT have to be a deadly crash. Significant pilot error was involved, in particular the PIC ignored the MULTIPLE warnings the aircraft gave regarding metallic debris in one of the rotor clutch assemblies. When that assembly finally failed, it caused the aircraft to crash. Had the PIC actually heeded the warnings, the aircraft would NOT have crashed, there would NOT have been any loss of life, and the aircraft could have been relatively easily repaired and back in service. Instead, the PIC did precisely and repeatedly the WRONG thing and everyone onboard died along with loss of the aircraft. The V-22 concept does work quite well overall. In fact, the US Navy chose a variant of it to be their replacement for the COD mission.
You should read the crash report, it was pilot error through and through, they repeatedly ignored oil warning light because it was inconvenient and pushed on until it gave out.
You may have missed it, part way into the video. The President flew in the new helicopter. He did it. It wasn’t from the White House lawn… they did it in Chicago...but a President finally flew on the new helicopter after many years of planning and project delays.
Marine One is any Marine aircraft the President is traveling in. It’s not a specific aircraft. Same goes for Airforce, Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and civilian aircraft.
So we are supposed to believe that in 2024, absolutely no one has thought of building a helipad on the south lawn? One that could be covered with the esthetic use of roll away lawn? I think that says more about our lack of imagination than it does our abilities. What a joke. THERE! THAT IS YOUR PUBLICLY AVAILABLE SOLUTION!
@@grannygoes Hi @grannygoes. While I have not seen the existing pads, I don't doubt you. I was referring to an all new heli-pad. One that would be large enough to support any helicopter regardless of landing gear configuration and one that could easily be covered with artificial - and heat resistant - turf. Properly adhered to the roll-away cover so as to not blow away because of the rotor wash or engine exhaust. It would seem to me, to be a reasonable and justifiable exercise if esthetics is the real reason that they don't want to land the new VH92-A there. However, the reason as provided in this video just doesn't pass the smell test. I welcome further comment :)
Yeah I’m going to have to call bs. This helicopter’s prop wash isn’t much different than the current helicopter. They are comparable in size and weight. The current helicopter has hot exhaust as well.
I am certain that if there was an emergency that required the President to leave the White House quickly, harming grass would not be a sufficient deterrent for landing on the South Lawn.
Really prefer the original candidate EH-101 Merlin. US didn't choose it because it's not made in the USA, but it was said to be vastly superior to the S92 base.
@@shootloadrepeat Actually it was going to be manufactured by Lockheed Martin as well but cost overruns made it the most expensive procured helicopter in U.S. military history and gave it the old "Pentagon Death Spiral" to cancelation.
The Japan accident was avoidable as pilot did not abort flight when he got numinous lights indicating trouble, in civilian service every CAS light is taken as it should be and aborted flight as indicated by the conditions.
The super stallion is the best looking helicopter in the world, no second. The worst helicopter in the world is probably that one from russia(you know).
Install a large slab of concrete just low enough to be covered by high end astroturf, and the turf be rolled up during takeoff and landing. Or just paint the concrete green to match the color of the grass. Oh, but wait, the United States could not spend several million dollars doing it my way, so that puts my idea out to pasture!!!!😔

Military cost over runs are so infuriating! I get over runs for R&D and such, but it is way too common and excessive. Defense contractors and the Pentagon must be held to account at some point! As for the South Lawn issue. Holy crap what a joke. Put in turf- if even applicable, or a helipad using stone or decorative concrete finishes. How hard is that to figure out with all this bureaucratic waste??? No wonder the Chinese are eating our lunch with their defense spending and upgrades.

Just install a landing pad on the south lawn for Pete's sake!
Right like who cares if it doesn’t make the lawn look “pretty” if you need a new helicopter for the president that’s more important than some grass
And they are entrusted to run the country. Good grief
They host a lot of events on that south lawn just wouldn’t work out.
@@ToryFromDC What events pose an issue without having grass?

This is disinformation. The original replacement was cancelled, a variant of the Agusta Westland EH-101 not this Sikorski variant.

Why don’t they construct a helipad ? Hospitals have them, businesses have them, police etc.

Sell law and order? More like enforce law and order. Selling democracy around the world is definitely part of the job though.
S-92 are outright horrible when they were equipped with only 3 rotor blades.

A sliding door to bring up a landing pad using hydraulics. Keep the grass in place, like they do for indoor stadiums with natural grass fields.
