Especially when compared to the Florida game where the Panthers scored almost as many goals in the 3rd period as the Leafs had shots last night.

Funny, nobody talked about that. Right from the puck drop, Brody was aimlessly floating a long way from the net. They’re blaming the forwards for not covering guys in front of the net…WHAT?
Exactly. Lyubushkin covered the puck carrier behind the net, and Brodie was in outer space.
The Lightning beat the Panthers in their most recent meeting, 5-3. I’d still be more afraid of the Lightning than the Panthers, especially their run after acquiring Dumba and Duclair. Those 2 fit right in to the line up. I would not sleep on Tampa Bay.
Vasilevskiy is getting healthy they or he rushed him back they should have stuck to the first week of December timeline JJ was playing well enough

after he took that hit from Mikey Assholeamov (good clean hit, loved it but hated it) he backed away from everything. weak AF and helpless defensively. He is a skilled player, but damn, get a loose puck? Nah, leave that for Point to pick itup first and make a sexy pass.... argh!!

Willie didn’t get shut down - he shut himself down. He was in full coasting Willie mode.
As a Bolts fan, I wanted to chime in on why the Leafs weren't able to get shots through traffic on Vasy. Long story short, that's a lot easier said than done than it once was. TB used to allow long shots the point at a higher frequency but have recently clamped down hard on those kinds of plays. I think the Bolts are pretty well aware that the only ways Vasy is going to give up goals with regularity are odd-man breaks and facing a ton of shots that he can't see. I don't think the Leafs are the only ones with that information. I think TB just has the book on teams that they know are going to try to do that at this point, and as Steve said, TB was really effective in making sure that didn't happen to them last night against a team that has had success doing that in the past couple playoff series.
Have to tip my cap to Reaves on that fight. Not many can hang with Jeannot, much less beat him.

Tampa fan, and I actually enjoyed watching this.
I was at the game tonight, they had a good first period but that’s it after that. Woll really helped them out making a lot of across crease saves to keep them in it. I counted so many times where the leafs have 3 guys attacking the guy with the puck and leaves an open Tampa player all alone in front of the net which cost them this game. As for Matthew’s it’s great he’s scoring but other guys need to contribute and find the back of the net. There is a huge difference from Willy now to Willy before he signed his contract and it’s not good

you know why that happened today and so often? its because rielly is back. he is a terrible defensemen. i also noticed that 3 guys attacking the one guy with the puck only to leave a man wide open, and its riellys man. he will cross the entire rink to go cover a man who is already double covered, only to leave someone wiiiiiide open.

Its tradition for me that when the Lightning play the Leafs, I come watch Dangle's reaction, especially if its a Bolt win. You'll never see a more passionate fan than Dangle.

Nylander has 11.5M reasons for lollygagging. His resigning after the surprising first resigning will kill this team for years to come. Minus well give Marner an extension with raise, but will have to part with the deserving Rielly.

This is like the third game this season Ive seen with the team taking the delayed penalty touch the puck and it not get blown dead. It happened to the lightning in the same way earlier this year but I don't remember who they were playing. Very odd.
And the dman should only ONLY pinch if theres a forward in position to be able to cover you which means the onis is on the dman to be observate and know where your forwards are at ALL times in the o zone

Very frustrating game. Your balanced appraisal of it is very interesting. I now have big doubts about Joseph Woll, whom I really like and appreciate. But 4 goals on first shots in 4 games, and giving up 4 or more goals in every game he’s played recently is very unsettling.
Aside from the first goal which was kinda bad as he lost it, the rest were on the skaters leaving him out to dry. Kamph leaving Point directly infront of the net, a stamkos 2 on 1. Those are not great situations to leave yer goalie in. Yea you want a save but they gotta make life easier for the tenders.
its an interesting stat, but goaltending is more than just stats.
if you just look at a games sheet and see that a team lost by a score of 5-3, 5 goals but they only had say 23 shots. statistically that looks like terrible goaltending. was it? you can't know unless you watch the goals.
more often than not a team, especially one as bad defensively as toronto (more so with rielly in the lineup) leaves a goalie out to dry vs some of the best shooters in the NHL. you cannot blame the goalie for crap like that

What do you think about putting jarnkrok as a RHD with Benoit as a 3rd pair
Explain to me like I am 5, why does home ice "advantage" matter for a team that consistently has a better record on the road? Keefe has been out-coached in every series he has ever coached for the Leafs, at this point I think it's advantageous to the Leafs for Keefe to have fewer chances to galaxy brain the lineup.
Toronto does have a juggernaut sports team. The Toronto Rock box lacrosse team is first in the league with a 12-3 in an 18 game season.

Simce his return from injury Joseph Woll has been average. No bad, just average. Andre was spectacular. That was the difference in the same way during the Leafs/Panthers game ILya was better than Sergei and that was the difference. Those 2 games were evenly played by both teams.
The most interesting thing about this game was the 3 missed calls on Toronto during their PK lol

It was a pretty blah game at times.. Some moments of excitment. I think Reaves (and his line) played great. I do disagree with Keefe putting him out at important moments, especially vs a 1st line. Nylander looked like crap tonight and Riley looked slow at times as well. After big wins VS Edmonton and FLA, this loss isn't so bad but it didn't look great. Mattthews goal was a beauty but we got lucky with a no-call clear trip on Tampa right before the PowerPlay was given to us.

was at this game last night and the issue was theyre overly prioritized with getting matthews to 70. Bertuzzi and Domi weren’t shooting the puck at all and Rielly on the power play was just looking to feed 34 rather than shoot from the point where we know Vasilevskiy struggles… doesn’t make sense

Steve is probably *correct* in his theory that the first goal shouldn’t have counted, BUT “possession” is defined differently by different referees. This with the particularly quick succession of play is probably why it didn’t get called

Possession is subjective. Like goalie interference we all see it differently. I'm with you, 2 touches and influence is a fair case for "possession"
I was at this game *for my birthday*. The only highlights of my night were Papi 63 and the Reaves fight (which was an amazing fight). I've been to plenty of games over the years, not like it's my first game. But would be nice if I could count that celebrating something at a game they'd come out and put in a bloody effort. Yes Vasi was great but the Leafs felt flatfooted to me, at least in person, for a lot of the game. The 3rd period was especially pathetic. Also those blown coverage goals... ouch. Happy birthday to me lol. I will admit. Vasilevskiy's full splits save on the back door had me clapping. That was a wild save. Should've been 3-2 there.
Remember last year’s playoffs Leafs were 1-5 at home but 4-1 on the road, so does it really matter what place they finish?? Playoffs are truly a different animal, but of course the elephant in the room is the Leafs still with this group ( since 16-17 season) has not solved playoff hockey. 1-7 in 8 series says that in flashing red letters. Maybe these guys just don’t have it in them. I suspected this by year 3 of the AM MM Willy era. Prove me wrong Leafs, I so want to be wrong.
Hopefully this year, the supporting cast can carry more of the load and the Leafs won’t be as easy to defend against.

To paraphrase Steve, if you're a defense man, defend. TBs 2nd goal, Point was all by himself in front of Woll. TBs 3rd goal, 2 on 1. Then there was the miscue of Kucherov sneaking in behind the defense. Just sayin'
McCabe's timing was one of his downfalls in Buffalo too. He would chase hits and leave his partner hung out to dry too often.

It wasn't ALL about the goalies, but it was mostly about the goalies last night. Woll has not been good lately, he doesn't seem the same to me since coming back from his injury. And Vassey was classic Vassey last night. Didn't hate the Leafs play last night, and if you switch the goalies I think we probably win it. Sammy's our guy, with maybe Jones as backup. Woll needs to be sent down or something. He's not good right now.
