Disneyland/Disneyworld Tower of Terror Elevator Dial Replica | Hollywood Tower Hotel

- In this video I dive into another Disneyland park favorite, the Tower of Terror and the iconic service elevator dial that greets you as you enter the elevator car. This ride may be gone (in California) but it's not forgotten as I replicate this piece for my collection.

This video could also be called, “Layer, layer, layer and layer again.” The more time you take to layer the more your piece comes to life. Sound advice from another great video. Thanks Derek.
10000%
Best. Dramatic. Re-enactment. Ever. ❤️🤣
Your dramatic reenactment stunt double was spot on!
This is awesome. Not only have you taught me so much, but you've given me a greater appreciation for Disney Park amusements. I've only been to Disney World when visiting the US for the first time in 2018, and watching your videos makes me desperately want to go back.
Aw, thanks so much!
Great video. I’m always amazed by your weathering
Thank you very much!
That turned out magnificat!
Thanks, Marie!
That turned out fantastic man! Love the depth and texture you were able to build in!
Turned out great !
Thanks buddy!
Lovely job. When I first went on The Tower of Terror it was a very hot day, the line was very long, yet when we entered the hotel courtyard and then the lobby, I was blown away by the details and the story they told. Perhaps because it was during a phase of my life when I was visiting more nice hotels, the time on that line has stayed with me. The contrast between the lobby and the basement level was also fantastic, change in level, tone, everything. I'm glad it will live on in memory, and your floor indicator!
Very nice!
Awesome project, I loved it. Haunted Mansion adjacent is a great way to put it. Those two are brothers from another mother.
Great music and sound effects, too. Very subtle, but it creates the perfect mood.
Thanks, Joseph!
You do beautiful work and are great at giving guidance while you do it. Thank you!
Thank you so much!
This is seriously fantastic!
Thanks Meghan!
Thank you for this presentation. Something about 3D printing, a bit like a store bought kit to me. Painting is one thing but creating this from scratch would feel more rewarding and not so printed out pristine. Just the way I feel about these projects.
Yeah, 3D printing may not be for everyone. But for the sake of a weekly video it's definitely helpful. :-)
Absolutely! It is pretty darn cool. ✌😊
Super fun Derek, it turned out great buddy! Thanks for sharing!🎃😄👍
Very Nice!!!! Thank You!!! 👍😎🎃💀
Loved this video and loved the ride too!
Thanks, Shawn!
Awesome video and tutorial. We have learned so much about layering and weathering from you. The key to these amazing projects is definitely a whole lot of patience and attention to detail.
For sure. It’s definitely not a quick project but patience is rewarded.
Never got a chance to ride it growing up.
As a very little kid I was scared by the video when you get in, to the point I was sobbing and the ride operator got me out with one of the adults from my family. Then growing up every time I went to Disney World it was with a family member who was anti-horror anything. By the time I had a love of the spook, and twilight zone, and adrenaline rides, it was closed.
Now I think I know just the right design to use for a wall clock homage!
Great job Derek!
Thanks!! Glad you liked it
That's brilliant dude
You're the only channel I'll watch ads on lol we love your videos! 💕
Thanks so much!!!!
A cameo from Mrs. Van Oaks?! Lol 😆👍
Yep! She does a great impression of me.
Always impressive!
Thanks so much
Nice! As always: superbly executed, Derek. You can NEVER have enough layering of subtle washes. Situated over a pair of weathered, beat up “metal” pocket doors would make that perfect. And if I did that, I would also have to figure out the backlighting and a smartphone-controlled servo that drives the floor indicator.
Pretty cool. I wish my sanding of prints went that easily ;)
Check my video on smoothing prints. Maybe it’ll help.
Nice!
Another great video. Thanks so much for sharing this. Your 3D prints are prepped very well. Could you do more videos on how you prepare your 3D prints for all your cool effects?
As suspected, it looks fantastic!
I'm not sure whether it'll be one of your projects, or one of Brian's over at The Smuggler's Room, but I'm pretty sure that one of you is going to eventually convince me that 3D printing is a thing I need to be doing....this one almost did it.
One of us. One of us.
Weathering is scary! I appreciate that you’re not shy about admitting when you get nervous about a specific layer messing things up (and it certainly didn’t in this case as you also pointed out). Side question, where did you get your glasses?
You bet. Sometimes I’m learning as I go and you all get to witness lol. The glasses are from Jins.
Cool
Since you were laser cutting the acrylic backpiece, you could have lightly etched the locations of the numbers to make it more accurate and easier to place. I usually offset the outline of the artwork (numbers) so that it won't ever show behind the letters once glued down.
I also came to that realization after the fact. Lol
That’s what I was thinking as well.
I've just find your video, it's nice to see that someone appreciate my design (btw, i've just noticed i've forgotten the hole to hold the hand on the backpanel)
Awesome painting, i might use it on my design currently in development, i'm doing a clock out of it !
Thanks for making it available!!
I wish they would have left ToT alone! That's some mad skill gluing on those numbers. It would take me a week to get them positioned.
They’re definitely not as perfect as I’d have liked.
@@VanOaksProps Don't tell me. I think they are perfect!
I get all excited to make some of this then you mention 3d printer and I remember I'm poor. Ugghhh. And a glowforge?!
Don't let the technology stop you. You could absolutely make this with EVA foam and a box cutter, use store bought numbers for the floor indicators, etc. I just use those other methods because time is always a factor.
If you were to back ligjt this, do you think it would achieve the same amber glow as seen at the parks? Great video. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, absolutely
This turned out really nice. Have you thought about using an Arduino and stepper motor to make the dial move? With 12 floors, you could turn it into a clock that shifts floors on the hour.
I’m not much of an Arduino person, but it definitely crossed my mind.
Great video! I always learn so much from your videos. What happens when you use window cleaner for diluting paint for your airbrush instead of water? I have only done one airbrush project and used water and it seemed fine, but I also don't know if it was really fine :D
Thanks! I’ve found that if you try to thin acrylic paint too far with water it can get clumpy and with the window cleaner that doesn’t happen.
I never thought to thin down my paint with windex... how did you come up with this idea? It must be so much easier to clean !!
Fellow maker, Gordon Tarpley, put me onto it and I’ll never go back.
Incredible job, as always! I have to ask, why thing out acrylics with window cleaner instead of water? Faster evaporation?
I’ve found that it thins the acrylic paints without them getting clumpy, which can happen if you thin them out too much. The pigment bonds seem to hold together and no clumps.
@@VanOaksProps Interesting, thanks for the reply! Keep up the good work!
Love the Tiger's hat, are you from Michigan??
Nope. My first initial is D.
And the ligth, and the motor, is after ?
Potentially.
Acid brushes are a blessing and a curse. I have tried pinching the metal where it meets the bristles but they still shed. Maybe a hit of CA glue would help?
That’s a good idea. I’ll have to try that.
Very cool video….That was a lot of layers and it looks great! Do you have a big house to keep all this stuff? Lol
I don’t. Lol. Yeah, the layering really makes it.
Can you make a video about how to find the time to make all this cool stuff??
You start by being out of work, then a global pandemic begins…
@@VanOaksProps I guess that would help!
I was wondering why sometimes you used window cleaner and sometimes water for diluting acrylic paint? Thanks!
Water has a tendency to make the acrylic clump, whereas window cleaner tends not to.
@@VanOaksProps
Excellent tip; thanks!
I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't find it. What kind of printer are you using for this? Is it a glow forge or a 3-D printer or both? Just curious because I LOVE your work!!!!
Both! I used a Creality cr-10s pro for the body and the Glowforge for the numbers and rear panel.
Your list of products used says "antique gold" rub and buff. But when I look online the color for antique gold doesn't look like what you used in this video. Did you use antique gold or another color by chance? Thanks Derek.
I almost exclusively use antique gold color. I think the footage makes everything look a bit on the red side, which is making the rub n buff look more copper colored.
@VanOaksProps gotcha. That's a huge help. Thank you sir.
Spot on as usual 😁 I’ve often wondered what happened to most of those pieces from the ride…was someone able to scavenge some, or are they in the landfill? The lobby alone….
They're likely in storage since they could be used to replace broken elements at WDW.
@@VanOaksProps And Paris, AND Disney Seas(although a different story but same premise)
What color of rub n buff are you using? I’ve tried their Spanish copper, but it mostly just looks dark brown to me.
Antique gold
@@VanOaksProps Weird, it looks so red on screen
love it, how big a printer do you need and how much was your material? also could you help with haunted mansion tombstone graphics?
It’s 13x13x14 and didn’t take much filament to print.
@@VanOaksProps Hello Derek, Thank you for sharing your talent and experience with us mere mortals! I’m familiar with Glowforge as a laser cutter/engraver, what 3-D printer do you recommend? Thanks again!
I'm a fan of the Creality CR-10 series of printers. I've also heard great things about the Ender series printers.
@@VanOaksProps Thank you! Do you have an “endorsement” link so you receive credit for your endorsement?
@@allenmcdonald1064 I don't work with them directly, but if you're considering buying via Amazon, you can use this link and I'll get a referral for whichever machine you land on. This is what I'm using: amzn.to/3sv7FcC
I'm curious why you use window cleaner to thin your paints.
It thins acrylic paints without breaking the pigment into chunks like water can.
@@VanOaksProps I never knew that, thanks!
Sweet needs some backlighting
Absolutely
I have been trying to print that for months...3 attempts and I have given up...
Where were you having difficulties?
@@VanOaksProps STL was too big for the bed
Then after a cut it up somehow a piece was out of scale and I couldn’t recover the mesh mixer file (windows are my mesh mixer and wouldn’t let me reinstall it…
Then once I was able to reinstall mesh mixer and re cut it then I got into bed adhesion issues…
Then no more walkthrough so no elevator simulator so no need for the dial…:(
Still want to make one though now it’s a quest
ooooo super cool! but doesn't it go up to 13? ..... wait never mind just confirmed it only goes to 12. We at VCD would love to do this project but add the mechanical elements. Make it actually count up then drop the needle :-)
You should do it!
@@VanOaksProps We lack a 3D printer. We have never had good luck with one so we stick to Lasers and our Open Builds CNC lol oh and out electronics.
how come you never just use REAL patina with iron dust and salt water?
Because it’s far more expensive and difficult to control the final outcome.
