Nice job, Derek. I purchased one of these a number of years ago and the patina it came with wasn’t nearly as garish (or as poorly applied) as the one that this started with. I hate to say it but it looks like a first day patina intern did the finish on your friend’s piece, UV reactive awesomeness notwithstanding. I’m sure your friend is thrilled with the more understated and expert finish you applied; who wouldn’t be?!?! If your friend still wanted the UV effect, clear UV reactive dyes could have been applied via airbrush so the piece has the best of BOTH worlds: authentic daylight weathering and spooky UV glow at night.
That looks awesome! I know I don't speak for everyone when I say this, but I'm more of a fan of this look than the way all the black light paint people use in haunts, now. Just looks more realistic or something, idk. To each his own, I guess. This looks the way I like it. Nice job!
Buckethead studios has a video on doing aged copper and they actually paint the copper color first, then wash the oxidized patina over the top, then highlight. I think I'll try a mix of both techniques with my HM plaque and see which I like more. I do enjoy a heavier hit of oxidization, but it's all about lightly doing it until you hit that specific definition you're looking for. Thanks for the tutorial!!
Love it! Definitely looks a load better. Keep an eye out for a video update on the tower of terror theatre. I'm actively punching hundreds of fiber optics in order to make the Hollywood Tower hotel enchanted sign
Gorgeous!! I was gifted a small unpainted replica of that sign...had it for several years and been afraid to paint it...I now think it’s possible 😁THANKS!💚
Great video. I’m in the middle of building a haunted mansion themed exterior for my house for this Halloween complete with full sized gates and plaques. This will come in handy when it comes time to paint!
@@VanOaksProps Oh the pain is real. Small city, very little selection. I first had to make a teal colour to mix with the black then reference the video to try and get the base coat close before breaking out the air brush!
Really interested in seeing everything in place, are you just making for Halloween? My wife and I are starting to research ideas tips and tricks and do a total home remodel. Our living room will be the haunted mansion of course, and our bedroom will be alice and wonderland
Awesome job Derek, looks absolutely beautiful! Hey just curious, does your spray on clear coat kill or dull the luster of the metallic paint at all? Seems like most of the time I spray a clear coat over acrylic metallics it can really dull them down? Thanks again for sharing buddy! 😍🎃👍
Thanks! Because it's a satin clear it's not too bad, but I also have the benefit of the piece needing to look old. So the high reflectivity of the metal isn't desirable in this application and the dulling from the clear works in my favor.
I've been replicating patinas for 30 years and thought I'd seen them all--this technique is terrific!
Thanks Sean!
You should do a video showing all the different methods Sean.
That would be cool to see
I agree Sean! This could be useful information for us all
I too would be interested in seeing that video.
A before and after at the end would have really show cased your skills. Simply amazing
Thanks 👍
Gorgeous and very realistic. I also like that you used your artistry to achieve this, Lazy Derek.
HAHAHA. I had to out myself before someone posted that I should have used a lazy susan.
@@VanOaksProps You happened to time your "outing yourself" with my thought, "Why doesn't he use a lazy Susan?"

Looks great. Reverse-patination, now I've seen everything! ;)
Yep! It's always easier to me to tone is down than to add.

This is so much better than the original version. The gold highlights really made it pop!
This is my favorite technique ever! After seeing one of your other videos I've used it like three or four times now!
Thanks Blake, that's great to hear!
I used this technique on my Poe monument and I’m still getting rave reviews. Now on to more. Thanks for the help.
Came out beautiful
Thank you!
Awesome print job! Came out so good!
Thanks so much!

Another fabulous project Derek!
Thanks Jason!
Another amazing job👍🏻
Thank you Jason!
Looks great. I like the dusted effect showing your patina layers.
Well done as usual. Another perfect project!
Thanks Darryl!
Amazing! Your paint-job didn't only lifted this prop to the next level, it pushed it up 10 levels :-)
Thank you! 😊
Absolutely beautifully done! You should attempt to paint a Popup Ghost head with your Ezra casting, so you'd have a set of Popup heads.
Love it! Great job re doing the paint job on this one.
Thanks a bunch!
weathered bronze isn't easy to replicate. You did a terrific job on this one!
Thanks so much!
This is awesome, such great tips!
Thanks!
Turned out so gorgeous!!

Thank you so much 😀
Great video. I’m perplexed about clear coat/sealer in the middle of a paint project. I thought that would make future paint layers harder to adhere?
Not at all. Sealers can be used at any point during the painting process as a way to protect the finish before applying additional layers.
How do you keep your DC power supply’s from moisture/rain? Do you use a dry box?
We don’t run any DC power, but all our power supplies are housed inside of boxes/columns
Where can I buy the haunted mansion sign?
Disney parks, and Spirit Halloween sell them.
@@VanOaksProps are you going to do more Disney Halloween projects?

No, this will be my full time office theme. Unfortunately there’s a lot of things that need to happen before I can start installing everything.
@@VanOaksProps I can not wait to see what you created.
Was the final clear coat matte?
Satin or matte. I can't recall.
I also hate waiting!
It's the WORST!

I would, but I don't have anywhere to store it.

I just use the cheap stuff from the dollar store.
