That's what I love about you and makes the difference between a professional and a DIY , adjusting the material so that you don't have to touch it with your hands leaving parts uncovered, so many make this mistake. i'm just a DIY too but watching videos taught me a lot before doing it myself, learning from other people's mistakes is a must so you don't do it yourself.
This is brilliant and brought back memories of playgroup as a kid . I remember creating pictures on paper using an oil based paint using a very similar technique . Adding colours and swirling them together .

Only ever seen this done with pre printed sheets and kind of one-shot per piece. Never even considered it could be done like this. Super cool, and the way the tissue paper just sucks up all the paint is amazing.
Did you never do the similar thing at you first school blowing the paint colours around in swirls and then using paper to catch the paint ? it brought back some memories watching this :)
Thanks, Martin! I've been all over the internet trying to find a reliable guide for a high quality finish, or let a lone a good looking result in the first place. You're definitely a cut above everything else I've found. Two questions: 1. You made this video 3 years a go and I'm sure you've learned a lot. Would you do anything differently if you were to hydrodip now? 2. Are any of the steps different if I'm dipping plastic? I assume I'll need a primer for plastic but otherwise the steps should remain the same, yes? Thanks!

Hello friend ... greetings from Venezuela --- I have seen almost all your videos and they seem great, especially this one, since I do hydrography here in my workshop ... oeri I want to ask you something ... what kind of painting you used ?? water-based acrylics? To kiss oils or could I use any spray paint or automotive paint ??? Thanks in advance..
This IS a film being put on water(hydro) which is transferred to complex shapes that are dipped in. The design being transferred doesn't matter, it can be a screen printed design or swirls like this. This is hydro dipping. Paint dipping would be dunking the parts in a bucket of paint or something.
@@Egypticus the term hydrodipping is a nickname for the process, the correct term is water transfer printing, when you just use spraypaint in water it's called paint dipping. This video shows him dropping paint into the waters surface, and swirling it around. Again water transfer printing utilizes a printed design and a chemical transforming said design into floating ink so it will transfer to painted parts. That's the reason for hiring professionals to do water transfer printing.

Sorry I meant the transparent primer. I have not seen or heard of this before ( no expert like yourself). Do you use it just like normal primer? Thank you.

Hi Martin! Going to behydrodipping my fork and stem. I am using all the products you listed in your description for the DIY steps, the spray max 2k primers and clear coats and the humbrol enamel paints. For smoothing the paint after dipping I know you used a professional carbon primer, but for DIY you hadn’t indicated any step for smoothing. Is it okay to do several coats of 2k clear coat, sanding in between, to create a smooth finish? Or should I look for spray a clear carbon primer or clear intercoat like from house of Kolor to achieve the same smooth finish? I intend to lay a logo before the hydro dip. Likely to spray the logo, then mask over the logo before dipping to avoid color under the hydrodip and not having a significant spot of unevenness.
I love your videos. I got inspired by your videos and recently painted my road bike in cadmium red with silver glitter on top. It looks amazing, but I couldn't achieve a high glos finish. For some reason, neither the primer, nor paint, nor clear coat wanted to be wet sanded and would just start washing away. What did I do wrong?
You haven’t said much about how to smooth things out and to make a nice smooth clear finish on the object. And I can’t find anywhere how to FINISH the pieces, how to smooth them out and make them look professionally painted.
I asked my girlfriend Sandra if she'd like to sand my parts but she said no, so then I told my wife my girlfriend had said no and to my surprise she said she'd be more than happy to do it! Sadly however, the end result is that now my bibshorts fit funny and I can't ride more than 10m before I'm in terrible pain and have to get off the bike - so my question is: what grit sandpaper should she have used again? ;) Great video though, you've done a fantastic job and the parts look stunning! Bravo!
Martin, you are outdoing yourself at an amazing rate! This was super fantastic. Can you tell us more about the "transparent primer" you mentioned spraying over the dipped color before sanding and applying the final clear coat? Thanks!!
Hi Martin, could you please make a video about hydro dipping a whole bike frame and forks? I'm sure there are many who would want to see that. Thank you!
i suspect the main reason you need to paint your bike parts all the time is because you don't seem to be able to pick anything up without throwing it in the air. must cause a few chips in the paintwork ;)
