I like the fact it pulled revenue freight for this to and it’s weird no one pointed it out also I heard it will pull a long manifest in California soon
I think the Union Pacific 4014 is majestic and shiny he is a king of the rails and I am very happy that he is pulling a train by himself he can pull 650 freight cars

This isn't the only time a steam engine has traveled without a diesel. UP 844 once ran without diesel assistance and did it really well too. And SP 4449 also hauled the BNSF passenger cars when that IMAX film Train Time was being filmed.
Now with 4014 containing its own PTC systems in the current 3985 tender, I can imagine the tender swap requiring the actual 4014 tender to be equipped with the same. Nice that they keep making great progress though.
I thought they were going to swap tenders back. If the 4014 still has the 3985 tender and the electronics were placed in the 3985 tender, then I don't think there will be a swap since the 3985 with some tender has been transported to Silvis Illinois.
I think the 4014 is the test bed for PTC on Steam. CPKC did something similar for the 2816. Keep in mind the 3985 was already converted to oil so it made sense to use the 3985 tender to keep the restoration on schedule since the 844 needed more work than anticipated for the 150th Golden Spike anniversary
I'd really like to know how they got the PTC operational... Are there 74v batteries now on the big boy? How does the brake interface work with a "manually controlled" air system? Truly incredible stuff going on in Cheyenne. Proud to be a UP employee, for the next 2 weeks!
I saw the big boy when it returned to the rails and I don’t remember it being that shiny, having such a high gloss did they repaint it in the last couple years or clearcoat over it?
Glad they got to silence the "ThE dIeSeL iS DoInG aLL tHe WoRk!11!!!" crowd. As if steam engines haven't ever been capable of pulling godly amounts of load with ease. Seeing these clips gets me excited for the Pennsy 5550 to get under steam someday.
The diesel was basically to help with providing electricity to the cars, and because it had PTC - Positive Train Control. The old steamers didn't have it, as it wasn't required in their day. They've added PTC to 4014, and I believe an additional steam-powered generator for increased electrical power.
From the Federal Railroad Administration website: Positive Train Control (PTC) systems are designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, over-speed derailments, incursions into established work zones, and movements of trains through switches left in the wrong position.
Thank you for getting the video of the 4014 and putting it online. Great to see 4014 out on a train without a diesel on the train.
Glad you enjoyed it
Я хоть и живу в России,но обожаю ваши паровозы😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
But doesn’t it need the diesel to power the passenger cars?
@@Devilninja333 No one of the steam program cars, Art Lockman, has a generator set to power the air conditioning and lights for the passenger cars.

Great captures, mate. You love to see it.
Many thanks!

How beautiful this engine looks. UP loves its locomotives.
I ❤ the Big Boy... Greetings from 🇩🇪...
Hope this video will reduce the amount of ignorant postings stating “The diesel is doing all the real work”.
I have never seen such a post.

Imagine the possibilities if this little experiment goes better than expected. The golden age of steam would be reborn!!!!

Great video and close up shots!
Glad you enjoyed!
4000 leaves, leaves its siding, the siding closes, begins to move
What needs to happen at some time in near future is to see Big Boy tour the first 13 colonies.
Curves get tight in the northeast.

Thanks for posting i loved the d&h alco's and the bigboys hoping some day to get trackside to see the 4014
I knelt down to get out of your picture at 9:14, but you had to zoom out too soon.
Perfect ttt!!!
That was an AWESOME video! Excellent work!
Thank you very much!

From what I heard, they added an additional dynamo and had someone do some kind of circuitry to achieve 74 volts.
For the voltage, they installed another dynamo, and tuned them to produce the needed power. There are three now, one is redundant.
Hyce made a really good video explaining things I’d recommend going to his channel
Amazing ❤
Great video
Thanks for the visit
Great video. Thanks. PTC on a 1940s steam engine! Who knew?
very Tastefully done by UP, Love it. This is the equivalent of putting bluetooth/lane keep assist/gps etc into a ford model T.
It allomst feels like when big boy was shuting cars, is allmost like how it was in the steam era back in the 1930s and the 1940s

Crazy to think, earlier this year was the first time In years 4014 pushed freight, and now this is the first time in years she’s pulled freight cars
No deisel engine? I know the 4014 doesn't need one, but they usually have one attached to help. It's good to see her pulling freight without help.

@@brucefrytz8611 they dont provide any electricity because theyre a FREIGHT TRAFFIC LOCOMOTIVE
Nice to actually it "chug" hard.
This locomotive was doing all the work as they all did long before there was any diesels at all .
When is the big boy coming though west Virginia because there is lot of west Virginia wood like to see it
Air breaks and stop at 8:25. Was that testing PTC by running a block signal?
It is my understanding it was a planned - structured work zone test, not actually running a signal.
I always expected them to just disguise the diesel locomotive to look like an old box car.
I had been hoping they would use an old "F" B unit.
They did that eons ago on the UP 3985, since that loco has MU controls in the cab.
@@rickswanberg4995 the F units dynamic brake is terrible along with the horsepower which is why UP doesnt use it often
How far East does he go if ever. I’m in Ga
So is 3985 not getting its tender back?
It’s still getting its tender back right after they converted the 4014’s tender to oil
I was in that blue ford ranger haha!
How about big boy on horseshoe curve
amazing big boy amongst wind turbines what a contrast.😊😊😊
With this system bring more steam back into service from working to passenger service not just up but all the rail roads the daylight and so on
it has a FRED on the rear??
Not required if caboose occupied. But going out, it wasn't.

What is a PTC?

Europeans might get on their high horse about high speed trains…sure yeah. But we sure as hell know how to build cool trains
PTC in a steam engine? That's how you know it's a garbage "country".
you act like as if flying scotsman didnt got the same thing as big boy does
