"writing a children's book" has been on my bucket list for like 12 years, ever since my daughter was a toddler. I had never heard of KDP, self-publishing, or anything of the sort. This is awesome. I dont even care if I make a best seller, I am so excited to check it off the list!
Me too, so great sometimes we just don't know how to get started or even have time or even the money to do it the traditional way. My son inspired a children book idea for me and now it is possible for me to actually bring it to life
I'd still get everything copyrighted first. $55 for one, $100 for an upload of 10 to the government, full works and takes about 6 months to hear back. If you post your book first and don't copyright it, someone can copy it, Copyright right it, then sue you for stealing their work. A woman had posted hundreds of free stock photos online, didn't Copyright any of them. She noticed a company had her works as well and was claiming to own them, she took the company to court and she lost because even though she posted it, the company had legal paperwork from the government saying it was their work even though it was her work. Always copyright your stuff.
As an art student, the biggest issue I can see with having art that is compiled is the inside looks less cohesive, the page with both the main character and the other bird, you can tell they're in a different style. With picture books the kids reading are unlikely to be concerned, but cohesive visuals DO contribute to books selling well. In this case I'd say they're close enough, but its something to keep in mind were you to decide you wanted a more specific look. Its very cute and I think it'll be well liked by all the kids that read it, and is defiantly a solid resource to use, lots of respect for having such a solid idea and following right on through!
@@Apricotblossom5555 that's true! if you lean into it properly, make it look intentional it can look good, which would be a different approach. that sort of idea wouldn't appeal to all readers, but no art approach will, and that would certainly help it stand out
Great information! One thing I'll add is to recognize the learning or story concept(s) in your book and which is the main one and what age group would be appropriate for each concept. For your book, the main concept is learning animal sounds. Children ages 1-3 learn about what sounds animals make and they learn the names of animals. I would say a secondary concept is the journey to find her quack (meeting/greeting different animals and possible emotions Lolly feels along the way). Greeting others, introducing yourself, and recognizing/naming emotions are concepts that are learned between ages 2-4. Another example is "Where is Green Sheep?" Although the sentences are minimal, there's tons of concepts packed in like color recognition and learning about spacial words (on, in, behind), description words (big, red, tall), and opposite words (big vs small). These concepts are all learned between 2-4 years old. While it's not necessary to have this background knowledge, I do think it's helpful to understand and could help the author zone into who will be buying their book and for what purpose.
@@MyFreedomEmpire Hello and Thank you! I just wanted to mention -- you outta link the actual Amazon Book Page in your descritpion box as well ~ so we can see your great work!! And... you never know when people want to buy! Big Congrats on this! Thank you!

OMG!! Happy to be passed this information by a relative who has published their own children's book; I'm a total dinosaur with books on hold for over 30 years!! I have the titles of interest, ideas of how the stories are to be written, illustration ideas, book size characters and more. It's time to roll up my sleeves, become focused, make the time and put the goal off no more and become entrenched focused & busy writing; now that I am retired. I am totally excited to start the course with Nuria. ; )
I drew and published four coloring books so far and am working on a fifth, but am also considering making a picture book this year as well :D thank you for the inspirational content and transparency, this is a helpful video!
Your book is adorable, I knew it would be good but it is just amazing! I love the story and how you put the illustrations together. Can't wait for the next one!
My lovely friend Katz is the illustrator for Wonky Donkey. She's an amazing artist, but pulls lots of faces to get the expressions on the characters. Lovely to see the book mentioned. But thank you for this video - encouraging!
I love it that kids just wanted something funny. So many of my childhood favorites were just nice stories, adventures, little mysteries, etc., not a book that hits you (or your kid) over the head with lessons. There can be lessons in there, but let the 'fun-ness' and adventure of the story come out first.
Thank you for your outstanding videos. Professional, concise, and informative. 5 out of 5 stars! My grandsons call me, "Pops." Your videos and direction are making it possible for Pops to create a series of children's books for my grandsons. Thanks again!
I wanted to thank you for this fantastic UA-cam. I am a retired schoolteacher of 35 years and just starting with writing children's picture books. I didn't have the faintest idea where to start. I have already written on paper three stories and your insight on how to do the illustrations was great. Thank you too for the list of all the websites you used to do the illustrations, font, etc. I guess I have no excuse now, and I will be taking that course you mentioned to fill in any missing pieces. Super helpful video, you're great!
Thank you so much for actually showing us content that you have created. I listen to a lot of different content creator persons and I’ve always wondered what they’ve created to get them there. It’s on my to do list for next year to write at least one children’s book and hopefully a series, you have inspired me, thank you.
Thank you so much for this video. I have three children’s books in my computer and had no idea how I was going to get them done with illustrating being so expensive. I am going to check out your friend’s course right now. I love how you showed examples of books your child loves. I am going to get them as well as yours too. Thanks again! I’ve subscribed! 🎉
So many children’s stories are lurking in the depths of my computer and brain. One has even made it with illustrations to my iPad! But I really didn’t know what to do next. Thank you so much for sharing your process and inspiring me to go the next step. I’ll be checking out the course! I also love that you are Australian as I am too. I feel more confident that I can actually do it too!
Wow!! This is what i really needed. Thanks for sharing this content. I have written my first children book but got stuck with how to illustrate it. Thanks for sharing
I've been making journals, coloring books, and notebooks on KDP for a few months. In the back of my mind has been the desire to make a children's book (I am a decent/good digital artist). You have inspired me. I am going to follow thru with my idea. Thank You!
Your book looks amazing. I did my first children’s picture book in canva also, but I did pay an illustrator to do the illustrations but I add extra elements myself to make it more interesting, as I discovered the illustrator used some clip art as well.. I did spend a lot of time tweaking but loved creating it. My book is Wings For Christmas
So the fact that you mentioned funny, I home school both my kids and I realized that when I teach to make them laugh they remember it better. If I say it in funny ways or make them laugh somehow in the process they love it. So if you are writing a book you want to be educational but sell mixing the two is still doable and should be done more. Kids need to know life is funny and learning is enjoyable.
Very inspirational and cute book. I like the idea of making a book the way you did it because I don’t have a lot of time at the moment like most people. But of course I’d rather draw my own illustrations but it’s the time thing. Nice video
Hi Caroline, thank you for the information! Your book is so lovely! I've had an idea for a children's book in my head for some 3 months or so and am getting more and more inspired to actually start writing and drawing it after seeing this and other similar videos on making picture books. I was thinking about self publishing but didn't know it's actually really that easy which is great as it takes off a lot of pressure of finding a publisher etc. P.s. just found you today, will keep watching 😊!
You are a wonderful inspiration. I have been working on children`s books and teaching myself the graphic design aspect. Thank you for sharing your valuable knowledge!
Excellent idea as an artist I could supplement with existing art. This looks great, content look's goo! Serial KDP publishing is about ease of setup that can be reproduced repeatedly and quickly. This is great, thanx.
Something to think about in using AI or stock art is that it can make it hard to use any of the art for merchandising. If the children's book were to really take off. The US copyright office came out with a statement that AI generated images are not copyrighted because it's a computer making these images, not a person. Food for thought.
Thank you for sharing this video. I just binge-watched several of your videos.. And, I finally purchased Canva Pro using your link from this video. Wish me luck in publishing my first book. 🤞
I gotta say, this is so cool!! I've always wanted to write a book but never took the initiative. So it's very cool to see another woman take charge and dive right in. Love it! I'm a book reviewer and avid reader and I get sent books often in exchange for a review (mostly from Goodreads). I'll be sure to check out your book! My daughter is 7 and she might be a little old for this book but I bet she will love it regardless. Thank you for the informative video.
Thank you soooo much for explaining/sharing all this and recommending which websites I can use to illustrate, etc. Soooo helpful and so grateful because until now I didn't know how I could turn my dream into a reality. Now I know I can make and publish a children's book at last. Thank you.
The book looks great. I feel that you should do a video where you read the book from cover to cover for children so they can listen to you read. Then at the end of the video you can tell parents to buy a copy of your book for their children. I believe this video will bring much needed publicity for you as a new author. And you will develop a fan base too. "Give and it shall be given unto you..." I wish you all the best. The illustrations look stunning. Thank you for sharing this video.

Thank you for being transparent about the money that you made so far. Because people often go into this with wrong expectations. If anyone wants to develop their own illustration skills for their books, take a look at Inkscape and Photopea. Both have a learning curve and are good for different things, but they are free. Photopea is laid out a lot like Photoshop, too, so you can get a sort of express Photoshop experience without the price tag.
I really loved this video. I have been slowly progressing toward publishing my first children's book. And this may be what finally gets me there. So thank you. It's easy to convince ourselves that we can't do it or it won't work or whatever critical thoughts cross our minds (or get said to us!). By the way, what a lovely person you seem to be! If the tone and content of your video are a reflection of the person you are - then you're awesome. Thank you for making and sharing this video with all of us!

As an illustrator, I find this information helpful as well! Because I do not have much fame (if any haha), I gladly offer my illustration services for whoever new author needs, and for me to gain the experience and L.O.R I will later need in order to make myself known. Kind of a not very selfless offer, but still! Loved the video!
Hi Fatima, do you have samples of your illustrations? I’m thinking of reaching out to illustrates and I’d like to see the work you do. Please let me know .

Can you share more on how you used Canva for the book? how did you make sure it was the right quality and size? And the different facial expressions for the characters?
I wrote, illustrated and published my first children's book entitled, 'Bop & Mo: Adventures Together.' It was fun making it and I look forward to making more in my Bop & Mo series. Right now the hardest part is getting noticed.
Congrats on publishing your first! And yes, the hardest part starts after you publish lol I'm hoping to experiment a lot this year with launching and promoting children's books so hopefully I can come up with things to share on that.
Hi Caroline! We at Book in a Nook think your unique journey to self publish The Duck That Lost Its Quack is very fascinating! Would you, by chance, be interested in an interview with us about your book?
I follow you and am thankful for the information you provide for us hopefuls...!!! I tried to understand this video but could not access the CC's as I have done in the past with the videos you have posted so far and I liked...!!! To my regret English is my second or third language and I do appreciate when I can confirm or corroborate what I am hearing with what I read in the subtitles...!!! It gives me assurance... This video does not have CC's... Thus, it is unfortunate for me when I encounter this personal inability which is, indeed, a handicap... I am also 87 and my hearing powers are slowly going away, so that poses another hurdle... I like and learn a lot from your postings and thank you for them... But I beg you not to forget about the CC's... Seniors also use the Internet and information and learning and imagining and dreaming and scheming possible nice little boardbooks for their grand kids...!!! They may be old but we are still enjoying life and new technologies and possibilities before going...
Your book looks amazing, I totally appreciate your energy and dedication in creating this wonderful venture alone. I really do have a suggestion, as I'm a designer I want to tell you that the texts should not be placed like how it is done now. You should look into the line spacing and letter spacing. The All-caps letters are touching the lines above them. So I hope you will take care of that in your future works and best wishes..
Thanks for sharing. Very useful video. Could you make one showing how you illustrate? I have a writing background so I've written a few storybooks but haven't published because I'm not good at illustration. I also don't want to do this course because I already know how to write.

love how you make it seem quite attainable! looking forward to my first published children's book! thank you for the inspiration!
Congrats 👏🎉
Thank you for sharing your book and how you accomplished publishing it.
Thanks so much!
Congratulations BEAUTIFUL GOD RICHLY BLESSED YOU. You book look GREAT.
I just did my first CHILDREN Book but I am stuck I don't know how to get it on Amazon. I will do the course with your friend.
Thank you so much I WOULD DO I GET MY CHILDREN BOOK LIFE ON AMAZON.
Thanks so much! You can also find lots of video's on UA-cam about how to upload your book to Amazon.
Your blurb is so cool! I love it
Thank you!
Excellent honest video, Canva is great, sometimes you do want to hire cover artist.
Are you an artist. I tried to find images for a series I have written on canva. What I need is specific.
Please share your contact info. I’m looking for an illustrator for my children’s book☺️
Thank you!!! I don’t want to write books to make money per say. I just want to create ❤️ And accomplish that goal. You’re amazing. Muchas gracias
What was the writing course you did please Caroline? Thank you!!
I’m loving your videos!!
Thank you. So encouraging and helpful! Love your presentation and your book is beautifully put together. I could not believe you did it all by yourself and in 7 days. Great job! 👍
Thank you so much!
Very informative! Thank you so much for showing us your book!
Well done! You continue to be an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, experience, and journey with others.
Thank you so much!
Thank you. I am encouraged to give it a try. Your book looks great!
❤ Shirley
Love this, thank you. Looking to expand beyond the low content stuff.
You're welcome! There are lots of opportunities out there is you want to try something other than low content.
This is great so many tips and very encouraging to novice illustrators like me...
Great explanation. Yes, please continue to make more videos on these types of books. I didn't know it could be so easy. Thanks!
Thank you! Yes, it really is very easy!
A great video! I have Nuria’s course and am speaking at conferences in Costa Rica at the moment, but I am encouraged to complete the course and to write more children’s books!!! I appreciate you talking in detail about your journey with your first book. Best wishes for success on your future books!!!
Can you share more on how you used Canva for the book? how did you make sure it was the right quality and size? And the different facial expressions for the characters?
I wrote, illustrated and published my first children's book entitled, 'Bop & Mo: Adventures Together.'
It was fun making it and I look forward to making more in my Bop & Mo series.
This is incredibly helpful. Thank you!!
Thanks for this. I’ve thought about making a few books for several years, but have not made the time to yet.
You're welcome! I hope you get the chance to do it!
That is great!! 'Congratulations '..I love your book and sure every little kid will enjoy reading it...thank u for sharing.🥰
Thank you!
Thanks for your motivation as I have already written my script only the illustration and cover left as ik adobe illustrator so am good on that end.
You're welcome! You lucky duck being able to illustrate it yourself - good luck with it!
@@MyFreedomEmpire Thank you.
Thank you for this video. Just perfectly explained for someone who is writing her first children’s book. Thank you! I am checking out the course!
You're welcome! Nuria's course is great.
Thank you for sharing. I will buy it for the grandkids at Amazon. More power to you if you did everything yourself!
Oh thanks so much!
I found this very informative. Thank you, dearest. 🙏
Thanks for sharing. Very useful video. Could you make one showing how you illustrate? I have a writing background so I've written a few storybooks but haven't published because I'm not good at illustration. I also don't want to do this course because I already know how to write.
Hey can you explain the KDP settings? Like page size, paper type, etc., that you use for children’s books?
Loved your video! So very informative!! Thank you so much!! Going to rewatch and get the info about the course you recommend taking! 😁
Congratulations and thank you for the encouraging story!
