My 6 year old daughter ran up and asked me if I could help her write her first book. I work construction but in my free time we are going to write her/our first book. She said she wants to be an illustrator/author when she grows up. I didnt grow up with my biological parents and just want to be there for her dreams. I’ve learned so much from this video thank you for helping us!

Hey Jules, I'm 16 years old and I've always been passionate about anything related to books, especially children's books. I've always said I want to write children's books, but I've never taken it seriously. Recently, my 8-year-old cousin passed away due to cancer, and ever since then I've been thinking about children's books 24/7. I want to write a book inspired by her story, teaching children about grief and sickness in the simplest and politest way possible. Maybe, making it a series in the far future?! For now, though, I would love to get some opinions about what you think about the idea and how I should start off!

I think that's a great idea! Personally I'd start by researching all books you can find that have that theme, bullet point any similarities that they have eh.the language they use, how they're illustrated etc. Maybe the books never mention the name of the specific illness, maybe they have a faq section at the back to help the parents answer any questions their child may have after reading it. The best thing to do is to just have a go! It's been 3 months so maybe you've already started? If you have, how's it going? :)

I've always loved to read and wanted to be an author. I'm now 56, unemployed, and recovering from an injury. I'll be one armed and unable to drive until fall. What better time to jot down what's in my head. I wrote my first children's book for my grandsons with no illustrations. My son said they loved it, they were engaged, and participated with actions and growls. My son enjoyed it and they want me to write more. This may be my new career. I am researching while I'm at home. When I'm back to work and have money coming in, I'll start investing in it and see if I can make it work for me. It's something I absolutely adore doing.

Thank you! I enjoyed this. You asked for our ideas with what we have done or want to do. I always wanted to write a book but was not the best artist. So life took other directions. Now, at 66, I wanted to do something nice, and to remember me by, for my 3 grandnieces, so I wrote a story book and illustrated it, where they themselves were mermaids on an adventure. I made the mermaids to look like them and I incorporated their real life best friends into the story too. They loved it and I sent copies for their 2 friends to have too, so they could see they were mermaids as well! I made other characters have names of people I also knew, who were special to me, so they could be in the story too. And 2 of them were the great grandparents--2 dolphins "who were like family". So I know, even though they have both passed, they would love knowing they were in the story and "had a very special place in the girls' hearts". I found a local printer to print it amd made about 30 copies to give to the girls, family, and friends. Now I am working on another book for my friend's little brother and another friend's grandkids to be incorporatedin it together. And I also have another idea for a 3rd book too. I would never have guessed! But I found incorporating people I knew, helps me develop my story too. I am now researching all of these self publishing and Amazon type publishing/creating videos to learn more about the industry so I can utilize them the best. Thank you for this video. It was definitely helpful!

Hello Jules! You are an awesome , inspiring children's book writer and ENCOURAGER! The world needs more people like you! I am a 68 year old Artist, mother of three beautiful, creative children, and a Gramma to 4 adorable grands! I started writing my family story about 30 years ago about how I found my creativity by growing up in a large family, living on a simple country farm...rather poor in the 60's! Out of such humble beginnings, my creativity came from just playing outdoors in nature, on our little farm...imagining wonderful things can happen using your imagination! We didn't have much money, but oh did we have fun times, right there on our little farm!
Your videos are so inspiring me to keep writing and creating even after this book I'm writing now is published. You have actually helped me in understanding the whole book Dummy making process! i love how you shared your ideas on making a Dummy out of a small sketch book! I will do that now, as I'm at the point where my editor is asking for a Dummy layout of my book! Thanks for being who you are! When God made you he had a special blessing in mind for all of us struggling new children's book writer's and illustrators!
Be on the loookout for my book: "Little Hawaii" sometime next fall. That's when my editor tels me the book should be ready!

YOU are SO Awesome!!! I love your video it is very informative, for me that is. I wrote several books about 8 -9 years ago when my first grandbaby was born. He lived with me at the time and he and I shared and spent so much time together; he inspired me to write stories of the things we did together ; I call them Our Adventures. The way are family lives, share, care, love each other and others, etc. They are positive stories that I believe everyone desires in a family. I stopped writing because I had no money to hire an illustrator and had NO idea how to do it myself. I lost my job and then started taking care of family. Now I'm finding a little more time to write and research. After watching your video my creative juices are flowing again!!! My home is filled to the rooftop due to the new additions to the family. OOOOOOH the stories I can write now!!!!!!!!! Still trying to learn how to do the illustrations myself. MUCH THANKS to you for sharing your knowledge, enthusiasm and love of this subject.

Hi Jules, I’ve just stumbled across your video and found it really helpful. I’m currently a primary school teacher but have always had an itch to create a children’s book. I LOVE reading picture books out loud to my classes - the funnier and more ridiculous the better in my experience.

I am so glad I found your video. I have always wanted to be a writer - ever since I was 10 really - but I never knew how to make that dream possible. I’m currently studying to be a Primary School Teacher and one of my units was on creative writing and I have found my spark. My new goal is to teach and publish children’s books that I can use in the classroom. I get so much inspiration from my daughter, so I have to thank her for and her quirkiness. She sees the world in such a different way. As soon as you said your first line in this video I knew I would love your video ☺️☺️

Hi Jules, I really enjoyed your video and it's so encouraging to see the passion that you have for writing childrens books. I am very passionate about writing both adult novels and children's stories (I'm so far unpublished). I wrote a young children's story about the friendship of a boy and an alien and also recently another young children's story. I have submitted my texts to quite a few agents/publishers but so far no one has decided to take them on. I have felt the great frustration of having the stories stuck in just text format and wanted to bring them to life with illustrations. I'm not an illustrator but have spent a lot of time working on it (very often up working through the night till the birds start singing lol) and have now got a set of illustrations to make up a mock up book. I was thinking that maybe having a book to show to children/parents etc and get it out there it might open some doors. I was also thinking to do an audio recording of it and put the images to it and make a UA-cam video book to get it out there. I would be very interested in your views/advice on my plans? Also, I appreciate you are very busy but maybe I could send some samples of the story or the whole thing for you to look at and give me some honest feedback. I am so excited about my stories and am so keen to get them out there for children and parents to enjoy. My children love them which means so much to me and I so want to get them out there and make them proud of their Dad. Sorry for my waffle lol. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for reading my message.
    Jason

Hi Jason, I think it's a good idea to try as many avenues as possible and not to just rely on publishers. It has taken me many years of self publishing to get picked up by a publisher, but I have learnt so much. I can do some consultancy/editing work for you if you want to email me, we can discuss. My email address is in my UA-cam profile :)

They need edited for a literary agent and im trying to figure that out! I love writing them!! I been depressed for years and i recently finished them and have rewritten them alot and made mock up covers. I didn’t give up. Everyone said not to. But not being published and how hard it os almost makes me want to. Everyone said the rhyming good and some would make a good little movie!

Have you thought about self publishing on KDP? You’d need to edit them yourself and get it proofread (if you have any teacher friends, they can be very helpful with this). And also do some images and learn how to upload it. But if you don’t have a budget, this is one way to do it.
Another way is to hand make a few to get some feedback from readers. Good luck 🤞

    1. What do you want to write about - flesh the idea or character out. Don't have to use everything, warm up how u think about it.
    2. Make a character YOU like (if you want your audience to like them).
    3. Become familiar with picture books. Library, go read read read. Pdf link in description
    4. Plot - maybe deciding the end first. She'll make another video about this. Make sure beginning sets out your character and an idea of what's going to happen.
    5. Plot - imaginative what ifs to get out of block
    6. Plan out the drawings - see if people will want to see what happens next. Probably where experience reading matters most.
    7. Read it aloud, try to listen for problem areas, add fun phrasing, onomatopoeia, alliteration etc etc.
She does a course teaching people about this stuff.

Hi Jules...I loved your video so informative and passionate!...As a early years teacher I have always loved reading picture books to my classes. Even before I started my teaching career I wanted to write a picture book....but life and 4 children happened!....my children now have children...and as a 57 year old Grand dad still teaching I thought I d finally start looking into it...and you popped up!...one of the things I don't get at the moment is if you have unique story idea how do you stop someone copying it?...I m sure I ll have many questions but your video was the best !..thank you Richie :)

    • @JulesMarriner
      @JulesMarriner  2 роки тому

Hi Richie- good for you! A very inspiring story. Once you write your story down, you have automatic copyright. You just have to be able to prove when you wrote it. You can save a copy with a solicitor or, budget version- send yourself a sealed copy and don’t open it.
It always feels like a threat that could happen to you, but the reality is, it never does. And once you publish your story, it will have a digital date on it, should you need to prove when you wrote/published it. There’s a video called EXPLAINING COPYRIGHT TO MY DOGS on my channel.

Hello Jules! I’m 16 and I’ve always wanted to write my own books. At first it started with fanfictions (which still is a huge topic in my life), then I started making my own books, but then I thought “Why not make children’s books?” My Mum loves the idea as well, but I just don’t really have the perfect idea.
I’ve also always been interested in the illustrations in children’s books because I absolutely adore them. The thing with that is that I don’t really know how to start with that…I hope your channel will help me with that

G’Day from WA! (Down Under) that is. I’ve written a special something, a message between a mother and her child. I wrote it in an anapestic tetrameter rhythm. As a young fan of Seuss his fondness for the quirky and unusual stuck with me and the tone and pace of his words captivated me.
I’ve shared my story with a variety of age groups and I’ve had nothing but positive unbiased feedback.
I guess my question is, what are the advantages and disadvantages when comparing self publishing to in house?
I find your videos, very relatable, fun and bright. Your knowledge is appreciated so much Jules.

The pro of TradP is you can concentrate on your writing the con is it’s pretty hard to get a contract (and you still have to do a lot of your own marketing. Great idea for a vid; thank you 😊
