MiniCooper Convertible rear window re-glue (Part 2 of 2)

- Using some fantastic 3M glue I show you how to reinstall and set your window in a Mini Cooper. The same procedure should work for various convertibles. (Part 1 is at • MiniCooper Convertible... )
I did the same procedure on my son's vw convertible. Used duct tape instead of suction clamps. The 3m glue can be quite messy be sure to not get it on the canvas as it will be impossible to get out later. I also applied to much on my first bead and tried to "clean it off of the glass. The rest I did a smaller bead and it went much better. You can use a razor to clean it off of the glass, just be careful to not cut your canvas. We did this 2 years ago and the window seal is still holding up great. FYI: The dealerships wanted $4k to replace the whole soft-top with labor. (Soft-top replacement on line is only $900... $25 for a tube of glue is a bargain what do you have to lose?)
So after watching this video, thank you by the way, I have started my Mini Cooper R57 window re-glue. I also used the primer (3m Single Step Primer and the 3m Window Weld 08609) to reseal the canvass on the inside first. After applying the primer, i waited an hour to let it set, then re-glued the interior seam, i used wooden clothes pins to hold the canvass fabric together. I then moved the top down slightly, to get a little extra pull on the top, i started on the driver’s side and stretched the canvass on to the glass, set my suction cup holders, and applied a medium bead of the glue and tightened clamps accordingly. I then let this set an hour and a half with a couple of pillows pushing on the glass from the inside, and repeated this process all the way around the window. I will update with my results.
How well has the 3M Windo Weld held up?
Jeremy Hurst Actually it turned fantastic! I sold the car and I know the new owner and there’s still no signs of any leaks or drips so I would say it’s worth a shot.
Thanks for the update. I just finished it up on my Audi A4 per the video and your suggestions and it looks like new!
Thanks to you and the original uploader, I no longer have to drive atound with a trunk full of water.
Just finished doing this to my '09 Mini. Thanks so much for the video. The only suggestion I have for others doing this is to make sure you either, a) remove the inside pillows after clamping but before gluing, or b) if leaving the pillows in place, do not move them until after the glue has cured. Otherwise you run the risk of smearing the stuff on the inside of the glass (like I did), which is hard to get at. I was anticipating a tedious, hot job trying to scrape the stuff off without damaging the window defroster wires. Started on doing just that, using the damp paper towel I had used to clean the outside of the glass to wipe off the dust where I had scraped and found, much to my delight, that if I scrubbed hard enough it came off! Apparently, it doesn't stick as well to the clear plastic covering the defroster on the inside of the window. Got lucky, but in retrospect, it was a problem easily avoided.
better to use painters tape around the perimeter before you start to prime or glue it down, I would think?
Definitely! I have a tan top and it would have been a mess if I hadn't masked it off with painters tape and plastic shething.
Yeah, painter's tape right at the glue boundary line with 3x5 index cards or newspaper on the other side of the tape to give yourself *lots* of room to work with. The problem with tape and newsprint or cards is that he's using those suction cup clamps, which can make the tape hard to pull up.
Thanks. You have a great sense of humor..!
Thanks for the videos dude. Hope all is well
Disappointed that you did not follow through with your comment about letting people know if this worked or how it held up. I'm about to try this here in Maine (USA). Sounds like you gave great advice because many other people recommend the 3M 08609 W/ the 3M single step primer. Thanks for the video, maybe ill make one myself. I'm thinking of removing the top and doing this on a bench.
Great video. Thanks. I was about to use a completely wrong adhesive.
how has the car held up to this point?
Awesome. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I got the same products. Time to get busy. Gracias 😁
Thanks for your video !! Did this on my wife's Mini Cooper. Worked like a charm. Only thing that was problem is that she has a dark brown top and I was Very Careful and still got some on the top. Otherwise, looks great and saved 2 grand!!
B.
aRustyPatina is is still on? Did it hold well and for how long? Thank you!
What caused the window to separate? And how could it be prevented?
Hi, how long time did this repair last?, did the window come off again?
Good job but I think ur clips are backwards
Better to let dry completely and cut eccess with razor
Hi Scott can you let me know where you purchased suction pad and what silicone your useing Terry
Read comments it’s in there
took you longer to put your gloves on
I know it's been a really long time since you posted this video, but I'm wondering how long this held up for you. I'm getting ready to do this to my 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder. I replaced the top three years ago and the glass has already separated. I'm not going to spend $1500+ USD on another top.
Thank you for posting this video.
Well has it held up?
Great video, where would I find the clamps
Amazon
anyone got updates on how this is holding up for them? needing to do the same on my miata
Well it basically looks like someone caulked in the convertible window.
Hello. What is the product name on Amazon for the suction cup clamps? I can't seem to find them. Thanks!
Here ya go bud:

i think he said he bought it off Ebay
thank you for the video. definitely helpful. just finished rear window glass reglue on neighbor's pontiac solstice convertible. a couple of suggestions with the sealy clamps. spin them around compared to orientation shown in video so that the wider spoon-like side is placed on the fabric of convertible. also recommend placing wood strips cut to appropriate length to span distance between sealy clamps to distribute the applied force over a longer distance. a standard paint stir-stick cut to length works well. pleased to report a successful outcome and major cost savings. neighbor reported getting repair quotes from local body shops starting at $1500 to upwards of $3000+ with no guarantee of success. many shops turned down the repair altogether. cost as a DIY repair: clamps (6): $40, primer: $32, windo-weld glue: $30, total $103. labor time: a couple of hours start to finish. definitely worth a shot as DIY project.
Hi Scott
Can I ask what's that black primer for, why not jist use the adhesive? Thanks
90nadz The other is a primer. Makes the tube adhesive adher much better.
That 3m primer is snome nasty shit. I use it for everything. Even makes 3m tape 10 times stronger.
Thanks for asking that. I was wondering myself. The primer apparently strengthens the adhesive and makes it several times stronger than when used alone. I just ordered both for my Solstice's back window.
Hi,I like to do it as you did it..but I can"t find the Tangit product....is it called Tangit or Tangil..where can I buy it?
Tangit - www.gfps.com/appgate/ecat/common_flow/10005S/FR/fr/109068/109342/131506/P106023/product.html
Where did you get the blue things?
You can get them on either Amazon or eBay for about $50.
Just like everything else in life… All it takes is time and therefore patience. I used Flex Glue which is white with the same gripping strength.
Works fine, too.
That crap fell apart in Texas heat 😡
To anyone in California, we can't get the primer here. It's illegal to be shipped to California. I tried buying it from several sites and it wasn't until I went to my local O'Reilly's they told me it was unavailable in California. I simply had it shipped to my friend in Oregon and had him ship it to me. Going to be trying this very soon on my 99 Miata.
Look for the 3m primer on Amazon. It will be mailed to you within a week.
@@morriserickson9494 not in California, I kept getting it refunded.
@@Julian_913 Interesting. I live in California and I just got mine yesterday.
@@morriserickson9494 Interesting indeed. I'm in CA too and Amazon didn't say a thing about it being unavailable. In fact, it says the stuff should arrive later this week.
When Amazon says No
eBay is the way to go
best to let the glue dry then trim it with your blade
You have the clamps on the wrong way
where you buy that clamps? what glue
I would Have let it dry and cut it with the blade once it was it hard strait cut would have got a clean look.
do not let it dry. i let it dry 4 yrs ago nd it was hard as hell to cut it off with a razor. but here i am 5yrs lter and i have to repair it again. . always buy the primer.
