- It's with great sadness that we learned that Barry Dennen, most famous for playing Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar has passed away. From the first concept recording to the original Broadway production and of course the original motion picture in 1973, Barry made this iconic role his own.
Barry has played the role of Pilate multiple times since the 70's and in various productions of Superstar around the world. We could have easily chosen one of many performances of him playing Pilate but instead we want to feature one of his less-known JCS performances, something that most of you have probably never heard.
From 2003 to 2004 Barry played the role of King Herod in the North American cast of Superstar alongside Eric Kunze as Jesus and Lawrence Clayton as Judas. Not many recordings exist with Barry playing the role of King Herod but we uncovered a high quality audience recording from 2003 in our vault that featured him. We hope you enjoy this tribute to a great performer! Rest in peace Barry, we will miss you.
Thank you for posting this. Long time ago - I mean really long, maybe in 1996 - I wrote Barry an e-mail. I was about 15 at that time and lived in Russia. I was so impressed with him as Pilate that I just couldn't keep silent, and what was amazing - I got an answer from him. He was so very kind to me.

I grew up with Jesus Christ Super star(Ted Neeley and cast) I got to met the wonderful wonderful Ted Neeley in person and my love for him as a person and as Jesus in the ever popular musical will never die

R.I.P. Barry Dennen. I always thought Dennen was British just like everybody on the original concept album. But I would find out that he was actually american just like Yvonne Elliman. I prefer Dennen as Pontius Pilate over any other roles he did.

I strangely encountered him first as a voice on Prince of Persia. Still sounds British but evil.
Whilst his Pilate is excellent, I think his flamboyant style does actually suit the role of Herod better, Pilate should be a tad tougher whilst Herod was by most accounts a party going decadent individual. However, when he got older, BD's voice got more gravelly and I think sounded better as Pilate, its a shame there aren't any clips of him from the production on the far right of the video image.
Why are they playing Herod's song? This isn't what pilate sang. Did he do Herod's when he was order. They shoukd have played his magnificent performance from Norman jewisons movie
