- Taken from a newly discovered rare bootleg of the original Australian Cast, recorded live in Sydney in 1973. Reg Livermore stars as King Herod and performs the song "King Herod's Song".
'This is from JCS cast member Peter Chambers' incredible recording of the show over two nights during the return Sydney season. PC recorded this on a 4-track Revox, sub-mixing like a fiend. Track 1 - a sub-mix of the hand-held vocal mic's. Track 2 - sub-mix of shot-gun mic's picking up chorus. Track 3 - mix of the rock band. Track 4 - the orchestra. This is - in my opinion - the finest recording of JCS ever, and I include every cast recording ever made. (OK I'm biased - it was also the show I heard every night for nigh-on two years) It certainly pissed all over the bland cast studio recording.' - Paul Johnstone

I saw Reg in this musical many years ago and he was AMAZING, together with Jon English. I wish this was a film so I could watch it again. And again.

Captures the psychotic narcicism of Herod arguably better than any other actor ever. Genius
It's amazing to read these lyrics flat and note the tweaks Reg did and made his own- the rage that lurked beneath that thin cloak of civility, this king's (queen's?) flaming vaudevillian narcissism. He really amped it up to 11! Very lucky to see this live when I was a kid. And lucky again to stumble across this fine recording!

Reg has a unique place in world musical history because it was Reg who first turned Herod's song into a high camp extravaganza. Every other Herod after him followed suit. Before that Herod had been pretty straight if quite cynical about what kind of guy Jesus was. Have a listen to Joe Dicker on the first Australian cast recording and you will hear a very different Herod as you will with the original New York and London recordings.
So camp! Makes it even funnier.
