I remember when they announced that they were going to do a live production of Jesus Christ Superstar, everyone was talking about Alice Cooper playing the part of Herod in the show. I got to watch it and his performance blew me away!
Personally, I can't imagine a world without Alice Cooper in it. The man can do no wrong! I've followed his career for as long as I can remember. So when I found out he was going to play King Herod in my favourite musical, I couldn't wait to see it. As usual, he didn't disappoint. But I have to admit, when he said "WOW", I fell in love with him all over again! I honestly believe there's nothing this talented man can't do. Long live Alice!!
Alice Cooper is the ultimate showman! He's always had the most amazing stage shows! Always loved him right from the first time I heard him in the 70's!
I’ve always said that if someone wants to study one person how to be an entertainer…Alice cooper. He can sing, act, entertain, and keep the crowds attention like I’ve never seen before. Truly the entire package.
When I first saw this rendition of JCS, I wasn't really a fan of Alice Cooper. But now that I am and I've seen what he can do, I love this version and how Alice puts his own spin on Herod. He's a born showman. (I also think it's really weird to see John Legend play Jesus.)
Welcome to the Alice fanclub. I was introduced to Alice in the movie Dark Shadows and have been a fan ever since . I've also seen him live many times now
Not only is he a born showman... he is a devout Christian and a self identified Bible scholar. He said that he spent time studying King Herod... which helped him put his narcissistic/paranoid twist into the character....
Agree with the other folks on here - Legend was poor casting. You need a power rock voice and his voice is soft R&B. The guy playing Judas blew him off stage
I am such a fan of the original cast, but I have to say, Alice Cooper is THE King Herod in my book now. Wow. And that drop mic at the end was just the cap on the cake.
Alice Cooper. He is: Broadway. He is Vaudeville. He is Rock. He is a Christian!!! The perfect Herod for a live on TV performance in NYC! Complete with mic drop! Great mystery: Who's got his cane?
At first, I didn't like it. I thought Alice made it about himself, but then I realized that King Harod is the type to make everything about himself. So now I like it
There is an interview out there and Alice talks about who King Herod was egotistical paranoid puppet... and that helped him figure out how to play the role. Alice being a bible scholar and devout Christian helped....
Can I just say, Alice Cooper was perfect for this part. I have always known he was the son of a preacher (as is his beautiful wife of almost 50 years) , but I recently found out that both he and his wife are followers of Jesus Christ. I should have known that. Just recently saw him live for the first time ever with the Hollywood Vampires and he was amazing.
I have watched this multiple times and I notice something different with each viewing. The costumer did a fantastic job with the outfit, I LOVE how his facial expressions change from curious, to demanding to fury to go in line with the lyrics. I've watched other versions of King Herrod's song, and by far, this one by Alice Cooper is the best. He really embraces the character and makes it something special.
Being that he is a Christian, and bible scholar, I am certain his insight and understanding of Harod enhanced his character development for his portrayal... afterall, he is a learned and experienced live theatrical performer.
I was 13 when I got my 1st single (record) “Elected” by Alice Cooper. My bedroom full with his posters on my wall. Now I,m 64, still listening to his cd’s in the car
This was a SUPERB show !!! This was the best part for Alice. He did it excellently, as we knew he would. His standing “O” as he perused the crowd after the song was unreal !!!
I cracked up so hard when I was in confirmation class and found out that this encounter is Bible canon - Herod wanting Jesus to perform a miracle and pouting when he didn't get one.
The best Herod by far. And honestly as much success as Alice Cooper has had over the decades, it feels like he missed his calling filling certain niche villain-esque roles on Broadway. He absolutely crushes Herod.
I still have to go with Rik Mayall in the 2000 film (the one with the dystopian vibe). It wasn't the best vocal performance, but the sleaziness and contempt he's able to project just make the whole scene for me.
@@cinyarko i think him not being very good at singing kind of adds to it honestly. this guy with so much money and power putting together a whole broadway performance, but he can't sing, is really funny to me

I don't recall the name of the actor who did Herod in the L.A. production back in 1972, which I saw, but he was fantastic. Cooper does a magnificent characterization here, I only wish that he had been choreographed, maybe a bit of dancing interplay with the ladies. It was just too static, and I found that to be true of this whole production. Some of the singing was great, but the stage direction was so stiff. I saw Ted Neely in his prime, more than once. Those productions were energetic, emotional and a joy to watch. This one, had you just listened and not watched the screen would have come across no differently. Could have been so much more.

Agree. And loved the way he slipped into full Alice Cooper "snarls" in the last verse. A great performance.
Knowing that Alice Cooper was a part of this was THE reason I watched when it aired. I was not disappointed!!
Hello deejohnston, how is everything over there and your family I hope they are doing well?
To me Alice Cooper was the only thing that was worth watching on this version of JCS.

@popkidhannah1363 I became a fan of Alice Cooper after I saw him in the first Wayne's World film
He'd be the first to tell you that he's done a lot of wrong, but now that the King of Horror Rock serves the King of Kings, he's doing a lot better. 🙂
I think the best Herod- Cooper captures both the camp and yet still keeps the menace in King Herod. Not surprising giving his career.
He's probably more menacing than the real Antipas was. 🙂
Amazing comment I agree and I played Annas the high priest
Alice Cooper did an incredible job as King Herod! It just goes to show how versatile he is as a performer! 😁👍🏻
He did. He tapped into what Lloyd Webber wanted I think
It's also fantastic how little effort it's taken him to nail the role that hard. His presence alone looks sufficient enough.
I met him back in the late 80s in Chicago with his wife and baby. Wonderful people and great to know they’re still married.
He's actually a devout Christian in real life!
John Legend had the best spot in the house from which to watch Alice Cooper perform ;-)
Yes he did.

I saw it here with Trevor White(Jesus) and Jon English(Judas). Oddly, Alice Cooper in this looks a bit like Jon English.
