I saw this video and decided to enroll with Sea School. Just six weeks later, I completed the four test segments, with 100% on Chart Plotting and Nav Rules. Wen't for my 5th test, and the 100-Ton Masters; passed! I documented my on-water-days, and also completed my CPR/First Aid certification. Got the required Physical, Drug Testing, TWIC Government security card and in six weeks I'm told, I should have my 100-Ton Master Captains License in hand. Thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to put this together. Recent captain here (July 2021) and it's guys like you who've taken the time to educate people that has made the difference in what direction we go! Thank you!!!!
Just seen that you recently became a captain I’m interested in getting my captains license are these the basics of getting one and do I need a Business license if I became a fishing guide and was wondering if you went to sea school thanks and congratulations on becoming a Captain😎
I'm on my way. Took the US Coast Guard Boating Safety Class. In the process of documenting my hours. Learning to fish on your channel and Gale Force Twins channel. There is no better teacher than experience. Glad the USCG doesn't just give out those Captain's Credentials like candy. It's well worth the training. The life you save just might be your own.
I work for MSC, you guys we're super helpful with this video! I've been thinking about having my own fishing chartering company, thanks again guys, awesome video!
I did mine 2 years ago, well explained, good job guys! You also have to renew every 5 years, but don't wait last minute if you don't want to do it all over again. Keep your time in the water, you also will be able to upgrade to 100 tons Master.

Great video! I’ve been putting off boating & fishing for other priorities all my life but looking to get on the water in my 1st boat by next year. I have watched many of your videos and can’t get enough of them! This one had me take different things into account thanks for sharing... yes I will pursue at least the OUPV grade!
Hey what's up buddy I love your video I got my captain's license 15 years ago I made money running charters today I am a Yacht broker I live in Miami and I make about three times more money then going out there and running charters I have no responsibilities I show the boat to my clients if they buy the commission are good I speak five language so I make more money then when I was a boat captain but I tell people it's always good to have a captain's license👍
Exceptional information and...What the...?? At 2:06, did I see that right?? That's $4.58/gal?? I know that fuel is expensive, but...WOW!! And I'm sure that elsewhere in the country, boaters may pay even more!! Thank God for trailerable boats and a local gas station that has E0 gasoline!! Oh, did I mention Mike that this is some exceptional information... :)
A while back we spoke of doing some LED lighting. How about a video of and LED lighting install. LEDs provided by Custom LED along with a role in the install? If you're interested.
Thank you for the great content and very detailed information. I want to pursue a captains license and do my own business/ private! I’m going to take advantage of the resources you have provided.
Where could i go for sea school? I live in miami florida. What other boating licenses should I get/are avaliable to get and do they apply internationally kind of like how airplane piloting works. //// Also random question that i have not found a response for is how does a person become a captain of a Cruise line boat, what do they need to do? ***Thanks for making this video it actualy helped***
Insurance question...I can see how having a Capt. License would lower private boat insurance, but wouldn't being a "Business" by taking paying clients aboard increase risk and liability in turn increasing Insurance liability? Car insurance goes up if you use your vehicle as a business, is it the same for boats?
You should purchase a charter/guide endorsement to pick up the liability of offering your vessel for hire. With a personal marine policy - like a personal auto policy - coverage is excluded when you take paying passengers aboard your vessel. And, yes, this endorsement will increase your premium. Reach out to the agent who assisted you with your marine policy and ask him/her about the endorsement.
Can you take people on your boat without charging them? I was thinking initially just having an ABC license and they buy beer and snacks on the boat. Would that still be considered by the USCG a chartered boat?
Captain Mike... You have impressed me with every video that you've shared. To you and your's in this New Year... may you enjoy vigorous health and prosperity! Thank you... gw
You need to take a look at the technical part of what constitutes a “chartered boat”. Don’t quote me but I think if you were passengers pay you more than half the cost of the trip you take technically that is a charter whether they are friends family or otherwise and requires a captains license. If I remember correctly and it has been several years for me but an owner of a boat who is paid more than half the cost of a trip by passengers not owning that boat is considered a “charter in demise”.
I’m currently in the navy. I’m born and raised in Florida. been fishing and driving boats my whole life but I would really appreciate any additional information to go about being a boat captain.
I'm kinda sure that its easier for a soldier to get the license. As a navy soldier you probably have quick access to a captain boat license. Talk with your officer, and coast guard about the captain license and how easy it is for you to get one as a navy soldier.
Your role at sea has to be related to the safe operation and navigation of the vessel. My instructor was a retired Navy Captain, a 4 striper and the CG wouldn't count his time in the engine room. Only his officer of the deck and actual command of the entire ship.
@@4stringmanagmaildcom That actually makes sense as engine room time is only a portion (engineering) of the overall accountability a Captain, has of the entire vessel, crew, cargo, food, provisions, safety, survival etc. etc. etc. And if your friend was a Cost Guard Captain instead of a Navy captain it may have gone better. yes Chicanery is everywhere, sorry to say.
Disclaimer this atleast in the state of CT applies to those that are for hire as a operator of a Boat regardless of type or style(includes paddle, peddle, electric, gas) and for shore based you DO NOT need a boaters captain license. But you do need to go through the correct registration as a guide and buy your fishing license and register your Business with the IRS and such as you would as the same avenues as a captain. also you will need to be doing the correct or proper channels to be fully licensed. And if you Do not get yourself insurance for being a business you will need to be sure that you properly word your agreements and disclaimers that NOTHING can come back to bite your tail end. so good luck and we all hope to see yall out there.
Yea, I can see why having 2 onboard moving maps and a handheld battery powered unit is not enough to toss the paper charts.... /s seems the USCG is a bit out of date, we don't even use paper charts in aircraft anymore.
I think you can , and here is why . 1)Quote "They may not look like boats, but personal watercraft are classified as boats and are subject to the same boating laws as a 40 foot yacht. A PWC is considered a small vessel that uses an inboard jet as its primary source of propulsion. The operator(s) can either be sitting, standing or kneeling on the vessel rather than riding in it." Implication : a Jet Ski is a vessel . 2)This license requires at least 360 days of documented experience in the operation of vessels, with 90 of the 360 days occurring in the last three years. Experience gained prior to 15 years of age may not be counted. Implication : you need documented operating time ( keep a log book) 3)OUPV or Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels less then 25 ton ( captain's license ) limits your size to small boats and 6 people , small groups .( you need time in a 25 ton or larger to get larger .25 ton, 50 ton .. ) It would probally an inland license . A small rowboat with a motor works too. a good way to build time . Anyone what to tell me I'm wrong , I am happy to hear , cause I have a 17 foot boat and was thinking the size matter question too.
Captain mike I dont want a captain licence to take paying costomers but I want to learn to navigate , i just bought a 23 foot 03 older striper to take my son and wife out , what and were should I go and do , please inform me I just dont want to go on the water with no understanding how things work, thank you for your help , love your videos
I was literally just thinking about this earlier this week I’ve never taken anyone but my family out off shore but would like to make it my living instead of working to afford to go out every chance I get
Lol hahaha the look dude on the left gave to dude on the right when they started talking about the drug test was priceless. Lol that was good stuff. Thank you.
Some would say "if you do not charge a fee... and accept "Tips" only. that's ok, or accept money to split gas with friends... all a bit risky if and when you get caught. Without a business license or business, you would have little means or path to pay Uncle Sam his (tax stamp) dues. Not too expensive though, and comes with benefit of write offs, Cost of doing business, better discounts, pretty long list with a few short-comings. Much more benefit to actually having a business/license than not. You would be facing evasion of taxes. I am not the authority on this, nor is this advice, just some thoughts on your question.
ReelReports definitely looking to get it so will get some of the prerequisites you mentioned first. CPR, drug test etc. and then schedule the Sea School.
The class I took supplied everything. Best to use their tools and the methods they will teach using those tools. In my class it was dividers, parallel rules, and a calculator. Also some plotting sheets for the vector problems.
Has anyone had to renew if expired? I have unlimited ton, but never finished to get pilot/master. Just checked, and since my tankerman expired 3 years after I got my captain license, the captain expired with the tankerman.
Can you recall how many people were in your captain's class? How many passed and how many failed? I hear the passing rate is less than 50%. Is that true?
I really hope you are learning how to pass the test in Sea School. You should learn how to handle a boat. Not sure how it the self study and passing the test goes. If you had to go to a cassromm then there would be no self study option.
What no one tells you is this is not the only cost, When i got my license i had to pay 135.00 for twic card and then when you go to the CG to get sworn in, it cost another 150.00. And if you do want to become a Captain, Take the next up test for 100T it is a little more cost. When i took the OUPV it was 10.00 more for the 100T test and only 10 questions more. You have more opportunities for work. And as far as a twic card, that will allow you to go take a piss with out an escort to a head, that's it. But this is only at a port where shipping is occurring. Truckers need this card for going into ports to pic up loads. Other then that i would do this again in a heart beat. You learn more then you think possible. And a lot of these rules are from sailing times of the 1700's.
Bunk Man Licenses are required in order to legally carry passengers for hire. This includes charters for fishing, sightseeing, diving, transportation, teaching or any use which is considered a “passenger for hire” situation. Many companies require them for boat deliveries. Cut and paste from the Coast Guard link OUPV License This license is properly termed “Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels” (OUPV) and is commonly referred to as the “6-pack” or “Charterboat Captain’s License”. The word “uninspected” means that the equipment required and the design of the boat are less regulated. “6-pack” refers to the 6 passenger limitation placed on the license. OUPV licenses are issued with a particular route. Your license can be for the Great Lakes, Inland routes meaning bays, sounds, rivers, lakes, etc. of the US or Near Coastal routes out to 100 miles offshore. All OUPV licenses are for 100 Gross Tons vessels (about 100 feet, more or less). The OUPV license may be upgraded to a Master license
Seems to my ears, those that have a hard time CHARTING are the individuals that have little knowledge of *Time *Measure conversion *Compasses *Sextants I could be wrong but all the extra plotting and measuring with factoring in time should be easy if trained properly. I'm old school..old school drafting set up is still in my head fromJr High(I'm 47 now).. *3/4 x3'x2' board *Tape for corners *Campass *T-Square *1/8"(triple border lines) all around a taped sheet of paper *Find your center from corner to corner We didn't have computers for Industrial Arts Class(Shop). Sorry to be so long winded, just OFF-POINT that correlates with using a compass, gridding, rulers, math, brain😏👍 *
The amount of 300lb captains I’ve seen shaped like beach balls lol I’m guessing you just gotta be in shape at the time you’re getting your captains license.
I’m a recreational fisherman, but if I get my captains license can I write off boating related expenses on, and count the money friends give me for gas and stuff as “revenue”
only if you open up a business with sunbiz. if it is not a registered business it will not count and can be counted as fraud on taxes as you are trying to take exemptions where not allowed
Nice video. To everyone, be sure to have the correct and latest USCG forms. DO NOT overlook anything that is supposed to be checked, initialed or signed. I had the entire packed returned once because there was one small place the doctor did not initial. Had to get that done, submit again and wait. Here is a thread discussing captain's license where this video was posted. www.thehulltruth.com/boating-forum/985111-did-you-get-your-captains-license-pride-accomplisment.html .
Why do they makes the various tests so difficult? Why not just a pass or fail grade? Someone who has a disability may find this course VERY challenging.
if you go in florida keys,,everybody his a captain and not much knows how to dock a boat ..why??? they are other way to get a license because what i saw there ,,look like very easy to get license,,i heard if another captain sign for you,..like you have few hundred hours on sea with him ,you can get it,,right or false ???..
What I hate is so many people are what I call paper captains. These people have hardly any experience operating a vessel . Someone has to sign them off on sea time. Passing coast guard test doesn't make you a Captain!
Happiness comes from your circumstances, like catching a tuna for example. But true eternal joy comes from knowing The Lord and putting your faith in Jesus.
Ok so big promo for sea school. Tip if you know how to find this video you don't need sea school. If you don't know what I mean by that, then you need sea school.
Not so, but if you can pass those tests 90/90 & 70/70, and get the time on the water, CPR, TWIC with knowing how to work a mouse and keypad. It's a bit more involved than you make it out to be Spanky. A book is a book, and an on-line class is just that, but in in-person class?... You get the book & On-line and most likely DECADES of knowledge, tips, advice, assistance from people that want to see you as a successful, and SAFE CAPT. Remind me to never go out with you and short-cut habits. Short-cuts get you killed when you play with Mother Nature. Tip: your "tips" need a disclosure statement. With 22 years Naval service I have over 12 years sea time, but all long ago. I am allowed to challenge parts of the test but would not as I am taking the lives of others as my responsibility. I want to be sure that I and any paying customer feels safe and that I have the knowledge and skill sets to take them out, and bring them back alive and well. Hopefully with plenty of fish. For very few, I would say your advice is spot-on. Others...no way. Let's say I live in Nevada, and took a trip to Florida, and a charter. Had a blast and decided there and then I wanted to be Sea Captain. Let's see, clicky-click here, clicky-clik there...and BOOOM! I'm a sea Captain? C'mon Man. Give me a break. 3 out of 4 of the Captains here in Hawaii where I have I chartered with... I'd never go out again, and one we didn't even make out of the harbor. They must have been the "Click-pirates" who found a web page Captains?.

Hey remember that one time at the 3:03 mark when you said you were putting links in description for schools? Well you failed that part fam

Hey guys, thank you for this video. It was really amazing. Could you please put the link of the school you were talking about? Thank you so much.
Do you only need this to fish in the ocean? I want to guide locally on n Lake Erie and smaller lakes by my house but it’s not offshore fishing
Is there an official book where you need to document your days at sea before applying for the license?

Do it :)
Don’t have my captains license yet. But when I do I’m coming back to this video and letting you know🤙🏼
Captain Mike does personal sea time on myboat count towards hours of experience for captain license requirements
It does, just have as much documentation as possible to support your claim. A log book, if you keep one, will help you add up the number of days.
Thanks 👍

How i can get beach fishing licenes and how dose it cost thx
Does this apply to river charters?
What are some common problems with sales and/or reservations with charter businesses? Doing research for a website that I'm considering developing.
Great video !!! Very instructive
What type of net did you use there for the mullets
Such a joy when I got mine long time ago. Now I just wanna fish with friends lol
Did you you use Sea School? It was a great time.

@@ReelReports I beg to differ Capt. I have my 200 ton and if they even help pay for fuel they are considered 'paying passengers'. Just say'n.

For the USCG OUPV license and the hours certification can it be a jet ski or small fishing boat to record time?

I really hope you are learning how to pass the test in Sea School. You should learn how to handle a boat. Not sure how it the self study and passing the test goes. If you had to go to a cassromm then there would be no self study option.
How much does it cost?
How far out does the Coast Guard consider "off shore"?

Licenses are required in order to legally carry passengers for hire. This includes charters for fishing, sightseeing, diving, transportation, teaching or any use which is considered a “passenger for hire” situation. Many companies require them for boat deliveries.
Cut and paste from the Coast Guard link
OUPV License
This license is properly termed “Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels” (OUPV) and is commonly referred to as the “6-pack” or “Charterboat Captain’s License”.
Osberto Rodriguez - Thank you very much for the info!
got a few 😀😀👍
Nice mullet!
Thank you.!!!
Seems to my ears, those that have a hard time CHARTING are the individuals that have little knowledge of
*Time
*Measure conversion
*Compasses
*Sextants
I could be wrong but all the extra plotting and measuring with factoring in time should be easy if trained properly.
I'm old school..old school drafting set up is still in my head fromJr High(I'm 47 now)..
*3/4 x3'x2' board
*Tape for corners
*Campass
*T-Square
*1/8"(triple border lines) all around a taped sheet of paper
*Find your center from corner to corner
We didn't have computers for Industrial Arts Class(Shop).
Sorry to be so long winded, just OFF-POINT that correlates with using a compass, gridding, rulers, math, brain😏👍

The amount of 300lb captains I’ve seen shaped like beach balls lol I’m guessing you just gotta be in shape at the time you’re getting your captains license.
What they dont tell you is that you have to have a guides licence that you will never get unless you buy one for 100 time what the cost is from DNR

Thanks for making this video ❤
I have been known to produce quality fish , this is something I would live to do

Thanks for contributing capt. Very good point. Tight Lines
My Sea School starts this week..
Received my hard license in hand with Masters endorsement today
Where is the school c
Why do they makes the various tests so difficult? Why not just a pass or fail grade?
Someone who has a disability may find this course VERY challenging.
Do the guides that hire out and don’t use a boat need a license
check out Chapman school of seamanship Stuart fl
if you go in florida keys,,everybody his a captain and not much knows how to dock a boat ..why??? they are other way to get a license because what i saw there ,,look like very easy to get license,,i heard if another captain sign for you,..like you have few hundred hours on sea with him ,you can get it,,right or false ???..
if you get a license go for largest tonnage you can don't get a six pack
What I hate is so many people are what I call paper captains. These people have hardly any experience operating a vessel . Someone has to sign them off on sea time. Passing coast guard test doesn't make you a Captain!
Wow, and I thought getting a private pilot’s license was hard.
Happiness comes from your circumstances, like catching a tuna for example. But true eternal joy comes from knowing The Lord and putting your faith in Jesus.
In Miami pretty much avoid all assholes coming at you ! Free for all out here.
Thanks New subscriber. Let’s grow together
