I grew up in the USVI in the 70`s, lived in St John and the High School I went to was on St Thomas, Volunteered to work on the ferry boats after school . When I graduated in 78, I had my sea time to get a 100 ton 100 pas Masters license it was called an Ocean Operators License back then, I worked in the industry for about 5 years, drove ferry boats, Dive boats, Crew boats, Charter boats, best money was made delivering boats from VI to St Martin, no cell phones or GPS in those days, Hurricane sitting boats in Hurricane Holes, but the best bang for buck was Officiating a wedding in re moat places by boat and doing a little Photography
I've always known you guys have an insane work ethic, but LOVE all of these behind the scenes vids showing how you've gotten where you are, what you had to do to accomplish this, and with this one, exactly what went in to getting your licenses! Collegiate athletes, fantastic students, then the deep dive into guiding/chartering. Man you two never-EVER-fail to totally impress & inspire! This is why you've been my favorite facebook page since it started and youtube page!
@@GaleForceTwinsHi,I enjoy watching your videos which are very informative.I'm planning on doing recreational boating with friends, and family members. Is boating education card enough to be able to do that?
You guys ( girls) ROCK! the USCG does not give those licenses away, I understand the work you put in. I have my Chief Engineers License. I worked my way up through the engine room. I remember the first time I sailed as Chief my nerves were crazy, even after 17yr working aboard ship. When I went to the Gulf on a dive support vessel (gas and oil industry) was an eye opening experience to say the least. Anyway I'm following yawl and enjoying your videos. (22 Shearwater CC, 250 Yamaha HPDI), East Central Fla. Inter coastal and St. Johns River.
Was looking for info on captain's licenses a few weeks ago and this one popped up. Very helpful. Haven't gone through all of your other content, but I've enjoyed the instructional videos the most. There's a zillion fishing videos out there (which I know will always be the draw), but enjoy the instructional vids and others where you explore the various locals of southern florida. Keep up the great work!
I can't wait sounds great! The only thing holding me back is sea time- I recommend Wilderness First Aid and the advanced courses for first aid specifically for boating too. Having a first aid kit with blood clotting agent and other things very important.
Great channel, captains! I believe the USCG counts a day as UNDERWAY for a minimum of 4 hours so time working on a boat tied to a dock will not count toward sea time. Also there is no requirement to get your 6-Pack / OUPV before getting your masters. If you have the sea time there's nothing preventing you from going straight for the masters. It's inspiring to see young women making a living on the water. Keep the great content coming!
This is not the only way to get a Captains license. If you own your boat and use it privately on the water for the time needed, you can get your Captains license if you then wish to use your boat for charter or otherwise where a Captains license is required. It is not required for private boats going fishing with friends
nice video- just to add to it, CPR courses are not all American Heart Association certified. I found Paradise CPR Training in Edgewater FL and they got me the correct cards for the coast guard. ( USCG ) they did not accept the online cousrse I took so I did it again.
I got my CG master's license back in the 80's to drive a launch taking 20 people at a time out to their boats. My "sea time" was just recreational sea time growing up boating.
Great video. I want to get back into the industry so bad it’s been a dream of mines for too long. This video helped me really understand the steps thanks. 😊
You don’t need to get a six pack first. You can go straight into the Masters if you have the sea time. This works mainly for Yachting or commercial guys
Any tips or suggestions on studying the courses and taking the test? What methods you used that helped you get through it? Thank you ladies so much for this info, I’m starting my course this September.
Way to go. I take my hat off to you two. Pretty gutsy to go into this business. I am very impressed! You two will be successful in whatever you decide to do. Congrats!!
I was wondering about the beaches, shopping, what do you need to go fishing there as in licensing and limits, is there a reef there to snorkel, can you dock a liveaboard at the hilton? what kind of rates do they charge?
I think it’s 6 hours= 1 day or something around there and then if it’s your own boat it by the onset system but if your went with some one else you have to get them to prove that you went on that day
That was an excellent overview of the process, Ladies' .. but you can, if you have the Sea Time, go directly to a Master license without a Six-Pac. Thanks again for a great video. R/ Glenn L / 100ton Master. Press On, Girls!
I could listen to you two talk all day. Thank you for the information. Can you log solo sea time on your own boat, or do you have to be on a boat with a certified captain to log hours towards your sea time?
Gail and Amanda their is a new course for anyone born after 1988. It’s called NASBLA. This is to CERTIFY the contents of this course are approved by the STATE OF FLORIDA, the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STATE BOATING LAW ADMINISTRATORS and recognized by the U.S. COAST GUARD
Let me start by saying your channel it is outstanding tons of great information,Question I have driven boats nearly my whole life 55 now and have a 325 Everglades in the ocean about four times a month for at least 3 years .Question what is the meaning of sea time .and to get a six pack license do I need to go back and figure out all the days I was out at sea fishing and write down in a book or does this need to be overseen by someone. what about all the times I went bottom fishing by myself .Thanks for the info thinking the six pack license.
You can track of your sea time however you like. A notebook, calendar, app thats up to you. When you apply for the license you will get paperwork that you will then write your sea time into. You can buy a logbook like this one to help keep track. Most log books are pretty detailed, all you really need is the boat type and number of hours on board per day. a.co/d/bbOlgKE
Thanks for that info. I've always been interested in the Captains License and saw a bazillion videos on it. Not as detailed or fun as yours. You guys are badass.....keep up the good work. 👍
Great job explaining the process for getting your Captains License. I will be re-instating my licenses in a few years, hopefully in Florida, so this was a great overview of all the required steps.

Hey girls you can count time on your own private boat if you own one, which is good for me because I am developing a business that will put me on a boat a lot and eventually i want to do some commercial work.
Ouch, Hi Ladies, you don't have to start with a Six Pak and the easiest way for most people is to volunteer as a deck hand and the owner of the vessel can sign off hours/days, there are formats for that. And you can smile when having your picture taken for TWIC with btw is a big time background check which is one of two as you will receive another one with the USCG that usually takes more than a year after you receive your lic. So start to finish , how long did it take you to complete your sea time , pass all the courses , and the exam so you could captain your own vessel?
@scripteaze piss off, nobody cares for your Opinion. They made the video and gave you info and you’re gonna act like dick. Nice

Wish there was more information on how to log sea time. Does someone signoff on each log, does owning your own boat account for sea time, etc?
Easiest way to get sea time is to buy a boat and keep a log of how much you use it. Counting sea time is on the honor system.

very informative information thanks for sharing - I never knew how a person received theirs Captains Lic.

Sea time is any four hours on any boat. You can use your own boat and self verify or someone else's boat but then they have to sign off on it.

How you book your charters?
can you log hours driving a pleasure boat? aka been pulling skiers and wake boarders for 40 years?

Very good but include cost & how to take advantage of free training where possible.
