The blood on the pointe shoe and the silent tears. Very beautifully done.
Uhm...yeah...art...I FELT THE PAIN
Very painfully elegant indeed ..😭
You could say that the animation was on pointe!
💝💝💝
I saw a sus video too its tooooooooooooooo sus
As a person who once had their muscles and ligaments partly torn, I felt it on a physical level. It is VERY, extremely painful, and it is horryfiyng to me to watch the maiden character... Beautiful, sensitive animation!
damn i am so sorry you experienced that
This makes me glad to have over flexible joints
@@friheten9081 umm .. I guess this is a little rude
@@candyberry7620 no i have Ehlers Danlos syndrome so my bones are able to move differently
@@friheten9081 you didn't get it.. this guy had a painful experience and you are here saying thank god I have flexible joints..wtf
I can't help but be haunted at the visuals of the ballet instructor's color palette that starkly contrasts the mc, it looks jarring and frightening with her mangled like limbs, blank face, and sharp red painted nails that makes her blend in with the dark background, it honestly really unnerves me and it's amazing.
I really love her design and how zombie/vampire-y it is
@@shreddedcardigan3972 Because she is mania of perfectionism.
Может порой те, кто занимается таким спортом и искусством видят преподавателей именно такими - холодными, равнодушными, но они тоже через такое прошли. Всегда любое искусство требует жертвы от человека.
let's all love lain
Thank you for this. I had to leave ballet because my teacher did things like this, and left me permanently disabled. At the time my youth saved me, but now I'm 39 and my knees, arms, back, and ankles are completely shot.
This may mean nothing since i haven't experienced injuries like that, even when I took ballet when I was 4 or 5, but I hope your pain ceases or gets better. I assume it's something that might last for the rest of your life, but I hope your joints get better. May God bless you and bring you happiness and health.
Good lord, you two, I hope you are staying healthy and living strong from that experience.
I want to say this in the nicest way possible… but you were most likely doing something wrong. I know plenty of professionals and retired professionals and the only time they say anything about their bodies being messed up it’s because of an injury in their career and their bunions on their feet. Most of the time if you don’t get severely injured it won’t take a toll on your body in the long run.
@@username_loading_error
I believe there’s two possibilities-
A) many ballet teachers don’t understand how to teach individuals with different limitations than they themself may or may not have had, and end up pushing students too far in the interest of perfection…
Or
B) the professionals were simply built different themselves, as not all human bodies are the same. Some are naturally more flexible, more capable of withstanding extremes, and so those are often the people who “succeed” in ballet.
I’ve also heard that ballet at a young age can actually impact the development of the child’s muscles and skeleton in negative ways too.
I Hope you can take cbd for your pain.. you poor thing :(
Is no one going to point out how the animation really helps curate the idea of the painfulness of pushing past your limits?
like "animation good" yeah but look at how they take it and accept it and just quietly cry. They KNOW this is for the art and if they want to improve they have to stand breaking a few bones.
Yeah I agree with you. This reminds me of the film "Whiplash" a bit. It makes me question how far someone is willing to push themselves to achieve what they believe to be an ultimate achievement.
No, this is wrong, and it's done to say that .
Homegirl broke her neck and tore her muscles, so i think its to highlight negative effects of going so far past the limits of the human body until one metaphorically or literally tears apart by the seams. The woman in the black leotard is a cruel teacher, moulding her student to fit the shape of perfection and bending her where she shouldn’t be bent. One’s wellbeing has to come before their art or else they lose the physical or mental means to continue to create.
it seemed to me that the girl would smile at the end, as she achieved perfection
Nenhuma arte deveria exigir este tipo de abuso físico. Isso é tortura, não Arte.
This tells volumne of what ballet dance goes through to present us their art
And when that career is all over their bodies are really in bad shape.
All for the sake of “art”…wow
@@soleydasoleyda honestly
I did a essay on EDs recently where I had to watch a documentary about the dance industry. The things these girls have to go through made me uneasy. I know this video wasn’t about EDs, but this is pretty much what the dance industry is like. Pushing young girls and women beyond their limits. Horrifying and beautiful.
I always wanted to dance but they told me as a child that I'm not pretty enough.
I ended with ED in my teenage years and I laughing that possible i could make carrier in dancing :')
@@aanimavilis1492 that’s awful. I’m so sorry that happened. I hope your doing better.
I was one such dancer. My body is now ruined because I was foolish enough to think that things like this were normal.
@@WobblesandBean I’m so sorry. I hope your doing better now. I’m thankful I quit ballet early in my life.
Lol I thought you meant EDS and was like oh yeah that makes sense because they'd be more flexible but I'm sure they're in plenty of pain, but not you meant Eating Disorders I'm assuming which funnily enough also often show up in people with EDS because of the links with mental illness and links with PCOS and stuff so what a fun and awful life it must be to be a dancer with EDS, ASD, PCOS, and an ED. Surely some exist and I hope they're doing okay.
how is no one talking about the girl's expression when the teacher first reaches to break her arm. she's terrified because she already knows what will happen, but she doesn't move a muscle. fascinating
But the whole animation and the concept it shows how much it takes to be graceful, is to endure the pain it brings to your body... This, I respect ballet dancers that manages to pull so much pain within their muscles and danced through them... My god it was horrify to see and know about the fact.
bravo Gobelins for keeping hand drawn animation alive
I am forever grateful to my ballet teachers for never pushing us this far. They truly believed in persistence and it paid off. They've helped shape some incredible professional dancers without damaging their bodies. Even our most rigorous training for the most challenging of choreographies was done with care and attention to our physical well-being. My cousin has danced on world-renowned stages with her group, but they've rarely been pushed to the point of injury. Discipline, patience and care for your body can really go a long way. I truly believe you can achieve magnificent results without abusing your body in the world of ballet because I've seen it with my own eyes. Such a beautiful artform shouldn't be so hard and punishing, there ARE ways other than this💔
It's good to hear. This type of story is the minority, on the professional stage at least, and there are Manny nutty-traditionalist teachers with children in smaller/hobby sectors of the arts
@@dflaming1371 and that's exactly why I'm forever grateful to my teachers. I always urge kids I know from my mom's work (school teacher) who want to try ballet to go to my old dance school. Ballet and dancing in general is beautiful and so beneficial so it's a shame that so much of it is tarnished by outdated views and principles.
I wouldnt say sadism, just old teachers wanting the next generation to achieve more each time to the point the 5th one is "achieving" 5x the amount of flexibility.
This then drops off due to the obvious damage parents or family see, and the limits are reset, starting over again this cycle. Some people CAN reach to that level without breaking anything (they realt expect 12yr old girls to Master this at 15-17? Too short time) but for the most part that comes with time, doing things slowly (like holy cow, a human can fit 2 racoons in their yahoo If trained enough for years) will enable you to fold yourself like those 80yr old Indian men
My ballet teacher tell me “it doesn’t matter how much it hurts you will never express it” and that’s what I learn.
That is extremely unhealthy. Please, do not listen to them. If you are in pain, express it. Discomfort is a different thing but if you are in actual pain it means your body needs a break because you’re pushing it to hard. Pain does not mean you’re learning or training your body; it could mean you’re damaging it for the rest of your life. Some of the people in this comment section say that you have to go through broken bones and torn muscles to improve in ballet but at that point you are no longer preforming art but a torture show. If you are in serious pain while dancing, even if your teacher gets mad, seek help. Do not keep quite less there may be dire consequences.
@@XxThe_White_LilyxX Mhm-
The music and animation is so haunting yet beautiful. What a fantastic piece that shows the struggle and pain of dance, especially ballet.
This is extremely painful to watch, but there is also another Gobelin video under their channel talking about the darkside of the dance world, and the girl who's tearing apart her muscles in this video reminds me of the girl in the other video and it adds to the layers of pain. You have to suffer to achieve perfection, and dancers willingly go mad and endure the worst kind of pain just to offer us spectators a brief moment of beauty. Ballet is as beautiful to watch as it is painful to learn. Once again Gobelin is really doing a wonderful job Bravo Bravo, Magnifique.
Louise no?
For anyone confused about what the hell is going on, I decided to do the honours.
Èlègie is Italian for elegy, meaning "song of mourning" or "lament for the dead".
Basically, the film is about how ballet is torture for beauty and art.
My mom was a ballerine. I can imagine that she was beautiful. However, I also know that later in life it caused she a great deal of pain. She developed Plantar fasciitis, which means she can't spend very long on her feet. She also has to watch the distance she walks. She has arthritis, she has all sorts of pain everywhere. This art form is literally crippling
I’m a cellist and I’ve played this piece. It’s worth listening to the whole thing (the Elegie is by faure)
Élégie is french, Elegia is italian. Small correction (I'm Italian)
I was in ballet for only one season, was 8 years old at the time.
My teacher left me scarred for life, my toes bled, whatever I had of self respect and dignity at that age was completely vanished. I was told I was a cow, a mess, my neck too short, my torso too fat.
I was 8!
How could you talk that way to a child…?
I’ve had body image issues since then…
All my life technicaly.
I wish I learnt how to be happy with myself.
But I will never be as flexible as them. My neck will never be long enough, my legs wont be slim enough.
This is honestly so sickening and beyond my understanding how someone could do such things to a literal child and then sleep at night, thinking that they did nothing wrong. I'm so sorry you had to go through all that at such a young age. You deserved and will always deserve better
When the curtains open and the wings of death appear behind the instructor as part of the background.. very lovely.
When an work of art is so well done it literally hurts to watch (in a good way)
Bon dieu l'usage des fatalities de Mortal Kombat pour parler des tortures physiques lors de l'apprentissage du ballet. Du génie.
ça me donne des frissons partout..... ceux que les ballerines doivent sacrifier pour l'art.. bravo !
It really explains how ballet is like I find it terrifying that they go through serious tough horrific injuries to just perfect their movements and the little detail of the silent tear is amazing it’s like going through pain but holding it in totally impressed by this animation
Some people are presented with two options, preserving their self or preserving perfection, and it's saddening how many people are willing to destroy themselves physically and mentally just to achieve perfection.
Actually made me wince in pain for the student! The animation excellently portrays the pain of the damage being done
You guys have produced yet another amazing film! It says so much in such little time. It is utterly heartbreaking.
Absolutely haunting. Masterful visual storytelling. Just wow.
The grey pallor, the blood red nails, they symbolise a wolf with blood on their claws. The girl's skin is pale with a fresh white clothes, symbolising prey about to be devoured. The pure beauty and sorrow of this is entrancing
If I had a nickel for every disturbing or creepy Globelins ballet animation, I’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.
This screams a lot of truth about perfectionism in ballet and they don't even speak on this short
Well.
For those who do not know, I advise you to read about modern ballet and figure skating in Russia. That's it, but with children. I mean 5-13 year olds
"ouch my back" "what's a back"
great animation btw
I feel like this isn't a representation just for ballet, but life in general. Being pushed past your limits in something you enjoy doing(which may transform into something you no longer enjoy doing) or have to do, whether it's dancing, drawing, writing, working, or anything else in life. It's the expectation and 'for the...' whatever it is, a good grade on a test or for a performance. The expectations being set too high and being forced to exhaustion and mental drainage. I just feel this short animation can be a little more broad than just ballet. It's just, based on the comments, ballet seemed to have the most issues so to speak. Or was a better example of something that is generally a broad thing. But that's my opinion on it.
Showing the anatomy of the dancer breaking and creaking they wanted to it to be uncomfortable and slightly visceral amd succeeded
uuh i felt this in my bones
Short, yet impactful.
a gorgeous and painstaking display of what dancers are put through to hone their craft
bro that's how yall do it? that's crazy
My respect for ballet is over the roof
Thankfully it's really not like this for anyone and everyone. It's progressed to be holistic and not toxic and I'm grateful to be able to say that I found a warm, kind, welcoming community of every possible backround and skill level you can imagine and we all go to class for different reasons and nobody is forced into it. I keep seeing more and more people on the UA-cam platform start their late ballet journey in their 20s and 30s and it be a purely good thing and they truly enjoy it and it makes my heart happy 🩰

Tellement beau et macabre en même temps
I quit ballet a long time ago, my friends that are still in it basically describe this.
Beautiful animation of a monstrous scene.
This is what many animations & horror movies are lacking
Wow, amazing as always
This is so disturbing yet so beautiful at the same time.
it is a masterpiece very well animated thank you for this.
the colors and lighting are really brilliant, tells us a lot about the story
Wow. What a powerful story in such a short span of time!
I had the extreme luckiness to have a ballet teacher that knows about this cruel treatment and want us to push through our limits but always in a safe way. And if we couldn't do it right away she makes us stop and drink some water. She is one of the most wonderful people I know
My ballet teacher had a "black swan" experience so to speak and made sure that would never happen to any of her students. I wasn't good enough to go en pointe, but she took her time so I could be safe. I quit years ago, but I still think of her fondly.
@@callmecharlie99 that's beautiful
@@annarss It is. She's an example for me of the importance of breaking cycles.
This video isn't gold. It's a whole treasure box.
I just can't stop watching it, it's so beautiful and I can actually feel real pain when her bones crack
I love everything about this, art, animation, style, music, elegance, the crytal clear cut message said in just one minute being so simple and straight forward even while using slight symbolism. So poignant, so elegant, so simple.
Oof, I couldn't look at that first part ... Better share this with my entire group chat lol
The animation quality is very accurate and looks very cool thanks Gobelins 👍❤️😍
Ballet has always had a dark, abusive history. I cannot enjoy it because of how exploitative, unhealthy, and cruel the training and culture is to dancers even to this day. Worse is that some even justify it, citing that true art is fashioned from hardship and pain, but I don’t see it that way.
Oh my god, thank you. I can’t believe I’m not the only one who can’t watch ballet because all I see is torture. You should NEVER have to go through any kind of serious pain to achieve ‘beauty’. I hear so many ballet dancers laughing about bleeding toes, torn muscles, toenails falling off, etc and it disgusts me. It’s like these people have been groomed into believing torture is okay(which honestly with how young many ballerinas start, I can believe that).
This was absolutely breathtaking to watch
I believe that art in the 21st century should not cause pain. Beauty should not be achieved through suffering
Is the grey lady grey because she was once a ballerina too and her body is like dead from all the injuries :( ? Like "Not a living spot on the body" thing :(
Bro you deserve so much, I’m sitting here crying over this one minute short film
AWESOME!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
ASTONISHING SHORT FILM‼👏👏👏👏👏
This is the true beauty of animated cinema, moving pictures with a deeper message along with body horror? I absolutely love the palettes for the characters and the setting, it truly sets the tone well. The animation is great along with the contortions of the ballet instructor fit really well with it's dark yet symbolic narrative, the music is gorgeous as well. Absolutely adore this film in general❤️

I've done ballet, it hurts a lot, I always came home with pain and injuries, my mother said it was cool, thanks to the pandemic I stopped and I quit ballet
Quando era menor tinha vontade de ser bailarina por uma ilusão de magia que envolvia essa ideia, com o tempo fui percebendo como é sofrido esse ramo
Acho que a grande maioria das meninas tivemos essa ilusão 😢
It felt so real
I took ballet for six years. My teacher was excited for me to pursue ballet as a life goal but then I moved countries. I ended up quitting after my new teacher would hit us with a long stick when we didn't stretch our legs out properly or didn't get a position perfect or any other offense in class. This reminded me of that.
I hope you reported that teacher as that is abuse. That isn't 'tough love' or whatever, that's a sadistic monster.
This is truly incredible
Amazing visuals and great sound mixing as well.
This is marvelous. 😍😍😍
Beautiful animation. Terrifying to watch. Brings back traumas.

I was touched last by LOUISE and now this. This made my body physically hurt. I love gore and gory movies but I hid my eyes when I saw this. Absolute chills. As a dancer I am so grateful the the dark sides of ballet (and dance in general) have been she'd light. Thank you.
C'est magnifique
These broken bones scenes reminds me from the 80s animated films and Mortal Kombat X-Rays
