    I cannot stress enough how much I appreciate the fact that the characters speak Nahuatl, it's just a bit of additional detail but adds SO much in my opinion, to this overall amazing animation. I could no doubt watch an entire movie about these characters and this world.

    Aight, Imma just shed some light into this. I'm a Mexican. I know the cultures that lived here and their rituals were... Not considered very 'humane'. But please know:
    -being sacrificed was considered an honor. Depending on the culture, it was mostly done to allow the Sun to rise again the next day (given the sun was very important for them, and most were done on specific situations), and only a few people were chosen for it. They prepared them since they were children and treated them with very high respect and privileges.
    -when the conquerors arrived, they exaggerated the number and way this rituals were performed. They were just trying to avoid pissing off their own gods and deities, which I bet in every culture isn't a good thing
    I am in no way trying to make it seem as a good thing, I'm not, cause in the end they w e r e actually k1lling people. Just trying to share some information as to why they did so. Great animation, tho!

      i was thinking if id ever get to see it depicted from within its own cultural context. i wonder if the abundance of these kind of stories where the sacrifice victims rebel is a western fantasy we keep telling ourselves to lessen horror of the conquest of the west.
      why is it that sacrificing 1000 people absolutely horrifies us but 10 000 people dying on a battle field is "just war"

      The only difference is that most of the sacrifices had to be dragged screaming to the altar, and those who fled, usually didn’t escape.
      Thrown over a blood-soaked altar, their arms and legs were held in place facing the sky. The priest would then use a sacrificial dagger made from obsidian glass and cut the hearts out of the victim's chest. The body was then thrown down the steep steps.

    Wow, escaping the tight grasp of dogmatic religion is not an easy task. The examination of it through our knowledge of other religions that really encapsulated the lifestyle of the people themselves is a fascinating way of looking at this topic. The entire culture itself is surrounded by their beliefs. The image of the woman praying. The home that was created by her prayer and the small cracks that eventually crumbled her entire world- its a perfect rendition of what that feels like. Many of us go through these feelings. I myself was raised in a religious cult and at one point it felt like everything was crumbled around me. Wow what a powerful animation.

      I will admit as much that I have not grown up a muslim but a christian, but as far as I have been told by a Jordanian and have surmised for myself, there is a difference between the Quran and the Hadith, the latter being outside of the former. They are confused as being one and the same but I will believe, unless proven resoundingly wrong by earnest scholars, that the tribal custom that can supersede the Quran at times is not part of the book itself. The Hadith is an option and addition to Muhammad's own exact teaching. You don't have to have a beard. You don't have to stone people. You can tell me otherwise so long as you can do so without the bias of an Ethno National Socialist.

    I love how in the beginning, they are illuminated by a blue glow. Blue is a very peaceful color, and it shows how as they bathe in the water they are somewhat calm. It also seems to show the sisterhood pf the women. Suddenly though, it becomes red as they make their way up the pyramid. It shows the fear of the girl and the violence around them. It also matches the blood, contrasting with the calm blue water. When the girl is battling with saving her friend or sticking to tradition, it becomes blue again, possibly relating again to sisterhood. After killing the executioner, the world around them becomes white. I’m not sure how this plays into color symbolism, but it might show the hard truth of the situation. They feel blank, because they may have saved themselves, but they’ll still die in the end. It’s a bit hard to tell but it is a lovely short film.

    "human sacrifice was exaggerated" was the statement that historian agreed till recently. they found a aztec tzompantli was 35m by 5m made of estimating 136k humans, in Aztec temple located in Mexico City. June 2018 edition of "Science" journal talks in more details.

      They were exaggerated, but based on very true baselines. At one point, one Conquistador claimed 80,000 people were sacrificed in a single day. There's no evidence that the Aztecs could do that reliably. That doesn;t mean they didn't practice a lot of sacrifices: thats what the Tzompantli prove.

    It’s curious, because Mayan people and ancient mexica civilizations consider sacrificing as something “honorable to their gods” (they were polytheists) and the author of this animation forgot something important, they never use to climb up the staircase of the pyramid facing front, it was ALWAYS sideways, this was in order to not face your back to the authorities when you went downstairs. That’s why most Mayan pyramids have really small stairs, so your feet could face perfectly sideways.

    • @CastorRidicule
      @CastorRidicule 5 років тому +65

      This kind of sacrifice was actually rare for the Mayans. Heart removal was more a central Mexico custom, which the Maya adopted on a smaller scale and somewhat late in their history. Before (and after) that, they would ritually wound themselves to offer their blood to the gods, or decapitate "a few" prisonners of war to consecrate a new temple, or throw sacrifices in the sacred cenotes in times of drought. In fact, pretty much every sedentary culture south of Texas practiced human sacrifice in some manner, with even the Incas leaving children and teenagers to freeze to death as an offering to the mountain spirits. And even then, sacrifices the scale we see in this movie, with hundreds and hundreds of hearts being taken at once, were only ever done by the Aztec Empire of Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City (this was not the only method they used, and not even the worst...). The initial acceptance of the older girl is actually not surprising, since the people believed being offered as a sacrifice meant going to the paradise of the god one was offered to, and the lifeforce offered to the god was used for important purposes such as making the sun move and preventing the end of the world. Of course, the Aztecs offered so many prisonners that they pretty much had to always be at war, and that is one of the main reasons the Spanish had no problem finding local allies when they invaded.

      Except it's not actually accurate at all. The sort of massive sacrifice by the thousands at once with corpses just strewn all over the place never happened, that's a played up pop culture exaggeration. Human sacrifice happened, but not on this scale (the Mexica of the Aztec captial in particular did do it more then other cultures in the region but even still not to this extent) and the bodies wouldn't have been treated so carelessly: After all, it's a sacred ritual and meant to honor the gods. It was heavily formalized and the sanctity and cleanliness of the thing was important. In one of the rituals that was rather gruesome where people were skinned, their skins worn by others to dance around in, when it was done the skins and other remains where carefully preserved in jars and kept inside the temple, for example.
      Also, the VAST majority of human sacrifices were prisoners of war. The popular notion that it was their own citizens or women or children dragged off from some other town or city is a misconception (The Aztec political system was fairly hands off, which is why the Conquistadors got allies: in a political framework where you generally maintain independence anyways, you have nothing to lose by pledging yourself to a foreign power and help them conquer stuff, under the assumption you'd be in greater standing in the new hegemony you helped prop up). There were a few specific religious festivals where women or children would be sacrificed but it was the exception, not the rule.
      It's also not accurate at all in terms of symbolism and visuals beyond that: The temple, dress, costumes, and archteture on display here is just a generic mash of vaguely Mesoamerican looking things: It's not speffically Aztec, or a particular Maya culture, or the Purepecha, Zapotecs, etc: It's just a generalized mix.
      Get off your high horse about "no whitwashing" and whatever, you claim to care about historical accuracy and representation but you don't know crap. The film itself is very well done and they should get props for actually using nahuatl if that's what's being spoken, but that's it.

'Historically' talking, sure it has flaws, of course some elements are either minimized or over-exaggerated, that's the point of animation. Was it disrespectful 'culturally' talking? NO, not at all. And just for that, I will always encourage people to support such animators. If you're not able to see how their attitude is progressive in this industry then that's your personal problem.

      BrandNewSongz It is culturally insensitive demonization, or at least it is continuous with culturally insensitive demonization. Just because it hits marks of progressivism in modern Western social issues does not mean on the whole that it's necessarily okay. It can be praised for its accomplishments and highlights as much as it can be criticised for its faults. The "historical" nature of its ignorant portrayal doesn't necessarily make it any less impactful to traditional Nahua people who care about their culture and traditions than other things that might fault them in the vein of modern issues of social justice.

      You keep talking about "women of color" or "person of color", but the animation is using harmful, demonizing stereotypes that portray the culture those women of color are from as a bunch of bloodthirsty savages. Do seriously not realize how self defeating your argument is? You might as well defend the Columbus day cannibal video as being good for representation too on that note.
      I personally don't mind the thing using stereotypes to tell the story it wants to tell, I think the animation is fantastic, I just think you are so deep into your own dogma you don't realize how hypocritical you are being.

In other words, the real message that everyone is misinterpreting is that you shouldn't die on the alter of a false prophet. But I guess that message isn't as edgy as "condemn all religion".

      @ShogunBean do you have facts and Evidence saying that one religion is right. 23 thousand different religions and beliefs since mankind created the first religion. So how do you know christianity or catholic which the Spaniards followed is the right one that speaks the truth. Do you actually believe Noah fit 2 kinds of every Species of animals into a boat that's half the size of the titanic or some being created the earth and the universe what about the flood that covered 90% of the planet. If you new your history you would know 43% of the religion's we have today are copies and rewritten from Ancient samarian text. So who says Samarian religion isn't the right one. Religion has been rewritten and changed so much that it's impossible to determine truth from fiction. I believe there was a man name Yeshua which you would know as jesus. But as for the Miracles he has done in the bible is impossible unless you believe in unicorns and Leprechauns or there was technology of some kind involved that we don't know about. I believe he has died on a cross for our sins anything before or after that is nothing but fiction unless you can provide Evidence saying otherwise. And don't worry bout me my life is good with those guidelines..

    Okay, people that are not from Mexico read this and say it along, AZTECS NEVER HAD AN EMPIRE;
    Let's read some about history, yes? Imagine you are in south Mexico, in a place named Aztlán, there is people in there, the Aztecs, and then a sacerdotist cames running and yelling that Huitzilopochtli (a war god) gaved him a prophecy, Oh! Now the Aztecs have to move to other place: Huitzilopochtli said that the Aztec people have to search an eagle, an eagle eating a snake in a cactacea (sounds familiar uh? check Mexico's flag) and when they find it they will create a city in that exact place
    The Aztecs searched for years that eagle, and then, in the freacking middle of a lake there is it, the eagle and the snake, and, in the freaking middle of the lake, they started building a civilization that one day will have even more population than the actual Ingland, BUT, they are not Aztecs anymore, when they arrived Texcoco lake and asked for a place to start building (there were other civilizations on the lake!) they changed their name from Aztecs ('People from Aztlán') to Mexicas, naming the Empire under the name of Mexica Empire, the Mexicas were descendants from the Aztecs, they spended years migrating looking for the eagle, and they changed their name, and that city, Tenochtitlan will be the capital of the Empire of the Triple Alliance of Tenochtitlan-Tlacopán-Texcoco (that were 3 different cities in the lake)

    I like that nudity es presented in a non sexual fashion, and that the protagonists fought for what they felt was right. Dogmatism and sacrificing people is always wrong.

      why would nudity HAVE to be represented in a sexual fashion in the first place ? there are countless cultures in the world where barebreasts is normal. and sometimes other parts of the body are taboo like legs or thighs.

    Iam mexican and I was taught about the origins of my country. So most of the sacrificed were war prisoners from other tribes, and some citizens were sacrificed too. The citizens from the city would eat the corpses from the sacrificed, but still there were sacrifices almost daily because the mesoamerican cultures especially the Aztecs believed that the Sun would dissapear and begin the end of the world. The serpent statues and symbols is the God Quetzalcoatl THE FEATHERED SERPENT who was the most praised god of all their gods.

      But wasn't it mostly the Mayans who practiced public sacrifices?

    • @evilsharkey8954
      @evilsharkey8954 5 років тому +2

      Texan Taxer, definitely the Aztecs. The Mayans killed, too, but the Aztecs were notorious for it. There’s depictions of human sacrifice and ritual self mutilation in their art. Even the king and queen occasionally had to give blood sacrifice.

    • @xCoatlicuex
      @xCoatlicuex 5 років тому +1

      Welll you got wrong some information, quetzalcoatl wasn't actually the most praised God (the fuction of the gods were diverse) and he was strongly against human sacrifices.

      I'm sorry, but zealots of ALL religions still practice this today. Perhaps not on an alter, but in the battlefield. Bombs dropped on innocents is every bit as horrifying as alter sacrifices. My religion is better than your is a common cause for many wars.

    "Two young women are about to receive the greatest honour : be sacrificed to their gods.", the ones doing the killing in their rituals, will be spending the rest of their existence in eternal hell for their cruelty tworge women & the innocent. Good thing human sacrifices are no longer done in this age.
