The animation style of the harp playing is beautiful even from a distance. When it said that it was based on a real person's life I was shocked. I was just getting ready to comment how cool and interesting the twist was but it's so much more sad and depressing now that I know this actually happened to someone who deserved to have success in life. Thank you for bringing attention to her story and treating it with respect
Much more shocking than the crime is the fact that the culprit never paid for what he did. Which is dreadfully common when said culprits are white and their victims are women/non-white people.
I feel like most people don’t realize that Pacifica is playing BACKWARDS during the duet! It really shows her talent! Also where can I listen to this music by itself?
The comment just refers to where she is sitting... edit: was a reply to a comment where someone thought she was playing the song backwards or something, the comment got deleted because, obvious reasons
I didn't realize this was based on a true story. Poor Pacifica, may she rest in peace. I adore the way the eyes were animated in this short, though, and how they convey so much emotion. A heartbreaking yet beautiful story.
Thank you dearly for your comment ! We're so happy we could bring Pacifica's memory back to life for a few minutes , raise awareness a little hopefully and that you've enjoyed it :)) thank you !
It's really not, this is a made-up story. Here's a tip, look up her name and filter out all results of 2023, you'll see that no such person ever existed! If such a story was real, her death would have led to a real international conflict, since she was a foreign subject. If a foreigner suddenly disappears or gets killed their embassy has a legal duty to find them or to transport them home for burial. A murdered person cannot be moved unless the killer is identified and processed in the justice system. Keep in mind that this story supposedly happened in 1907, before WW1 and the world was tense with political issues. WW1 began because an Austrian was killed in Bosnia, so the death of foreigners can cause serious conflicts.
The spiteful duet scene gave me goosebumps. Magnifica could have caused a scene or kicked him off stage, but instead she chose to play with him. To prove a point or try to be equals, we'll never know, but she proved that she was so much better than him, that she could play perfectly even when playing backwards. I bet Pacifica was just as talented, she most certainly deserved to be known. So glad that this short was made in her honour

Envy is truly a dangerous emotion. You could see it from start to end, Edouard was truly full of contempt for Magnifica. This man would go as far as to fight during her most prominent moments. I liked how Edouard, despite being such a simple character, was able to fully convey the emotion of envy so flawlessly. This man has no shame (you can see very clearly at the end too). Absolutely amazing story. I loved it, thank you GOBELINS for the story and the message at the end. I hope for such tragedies towards women disappear forever.
@@azelle97 you had a part in making this?! If so you should be immensely proud!! The atmosphere, music, art-style and animation are all magnificent! (pun not intended 😭). You dont get it he is a Musican but also her husband the same Rings but he was tired being in her talented shadow but he should not envy her if he loves her
His jelousy became hate she was dissapionted but she could harmonzie with him in the duet of harp instead of fight whos better Player je tried to outshine her aswell onthe Debüt with people instead of them both to equally shine garmonize he cant Play like her but he plays beautiful to its like this life her love is not enough he sees her as a rival shes angry at him dissapionted that he cant be happy for their sucess in life i know he wants to shine on his own be seen as a Musican he can Talk than make a solo debut ibstead of this behavoiur like hes with her they lack talking to each other why the other is unhappy
Gobelins has done it again. I would have never known the story of Pacifica Zelaya if it were not for this channel. You can't even find a decent article on her without meticulous searching through Google. I love the animation, simplicity, and raw emotion. Such a beautiful way to highlight a forgotten and and important life. Rest in power Pacifica Zelaya!
@@DocAcher and @Olive Hi ! It's "normal" not to find anything on the internet unfortunately. He meant to embarrass her, nobody stopped him. So she played her instrument _backwards,_ and did so beautifully Then he followed her home and killed her, and nobody stopped him. What a truly tragic tale, poor Pacifica. She deserved better.
Magnifica and her betrothed played excellently together. He could've seen that and celebrated the grandeur of their duet. Still, he was corrupted, and with his eyes green with envy which one could feel seething throughout the entire short film, became someone not who she thought he was. This is magnificent. Thank you.
@@bellooreoluwa3046 I'm aware. What I saw though was that, it became a duet anyway as the music they made was fantastic. Instead of celebrating what he had with her, both as musical partners and as romantic partners, he turned away.
@@papasscooperiaworker3649 I guess. but I saw it as just huge disrespect. I didn't see it as a duet either because it was a fight, not a harmonious occasion. It's one thing to talk about the potential of a duet, but I wouldn't really call looking back on such a memory as a duet, especially since he stopped playing very early on. He meant to *humiliate* her, but it wound up showing how impressive she was that she could play better than him backwards.
This short teaches us a valuable lesson: 99% of the time, the hate is from the INNER circle, not the outsiders looking in. It’s horrible how a man’s bruised ego led to her death.
The shot of the spider going for the kill in its web before he pulled out the gun...wonderful use of a visual metaphor to provide that moment of knowing dread before the full reveal.

I've never heard about the story of Zelaya. I can't really find anything about her online either, This was such a lovely tribute. It's scary how dangerous the ego of men can be.

The second her friend/sister left her alone my heart sank It just goes to show that even decades later this violence against women is so ingrained now that it's become instinct for modern day women to fear being alone with a man (Especially one with a fragile ego) Such a beautiful animation. I love the use of language here. And the visuals are simply stunning!!
Sadly true. My heart sank too when I saw her going alone to confront the guy. She didn't even open her mouth to berate him but, in the end, it wouldn't have mattered. The fact that she was better than him was "provocation" enough. We are in the 21st century, yet this cultural thing our mothers/grandmothers taught us about fearing men and bowing to their wishes lest we want violence to ensue is still painfully accurate even a century later. This shouldn't have happened, and the guy should have answered for this crime. Beautiful animation, indeed.
@@catherinelink many of us were not taught by our mothers and grandmothers to fear men, but rather learned from fathers, brothers and peers through firsthand experience. I know more women and girls who this is true of than not. I hope one day it can become a thing of the past but unfortunately we can't take progress as a given.
That ending left me flabbergasted. I wasn't expecting such a stunning short film to call to light the horribly common problem women and girls are still facing today. Nor was I expecting it to be a true story!! Well done!!

@@TeanderLess True. But back then, there was a serious issue that everyone ignored and continues to ignore. By playing the harp from the opposite side, she basically had to re-learn how to play the entire piece on the spot. A nod to how incredibly talented she was at her music. Fantastic film. Always blown away with the work that comes out of Gobelins

As a Costa Rican, I absolutely LOVE the representation of our country! I knew from the start of the voices that those two characters were Costa Rican. Not to mention that as a beginner artist myself, this animated short film is spectacular! I love this so much!
There was something about the way he stopped playing the harp with her, something about the clenched fists, that made me think he was plotting something. But the spiderweb in the tree confirmed it. Even so, I did NOT expect such an ending to actually take place. Very well done. And thank you for this information.

As a young Costa Rican girl, I'm dissapointed no one had told me about this. Thank you for bringing light to her story with this short and doing it in such an artistic way! :)
i wasn't expecting that revelation at the end. I'm so angry now Edit: Setting aside my anger, this was beautifully animated, and I so appreciate y'all's effort to tell the story of Pacifica instead of allowing her name to be continually erased from history like so many men desire for their victims. I hate how true crime culture immortalizes the killer, but never remembers the name of the victim or anything about them apart from their death. Pacifica was a talent and a gem. That's what she deserves to be remembered for. Thank you.
Oh my goodness that was beautiful. The end made my jaw drop to the floor, it's wonderful that Gobelins students are putting such important messages into their equally incredible animations.

@@azelle97 Nothing but praise for this, you showed her story in the most honest, respectful, and gorgeous manner I can think of. I am so excited for the next few weeks of stunning animations.
At first I thought that Edouard was "just" a reasonably gealous man, as he could have been afraid that Magnifica would have been approached by older men in the gala who could potentially embarass her or saying something wrong. Instead the story developes such in a unpredictable way that got me literally glued to the laptop and until the last seconds of the short I thought that Magnifica gave him the best lesson ever, by staying in silence and almost pitying him for his narrowness and horrible soul. I imagined her going back to the luxurious hall with people all amazed by her sheer talent, narrating her story in the future years to perhaps a younger herself (a daughter, a son? Maybe a niece?) like closing the narrative arch of this beatiful piece of art. Instead the end... it is just too real, too common for so many poor girls and women and I'm feeling a mix of emotions between sadness, anger, pain and disheartenment. This is more than an amazing work from everyone involved in the production of Magnifica: a political statement and an elogy for talented girls and women who were been stopped in the pattern of patriarchal "modi" and profound envy.
I really thought with the duet playing he would learn to accept his fiancee’s talent and support her as she deserved. I wasn’t expecting the ending at all, and when I read it was based off a real story my heart sunk… :( this is such a well-done film, thank you for showcasing the tragedy of Pacifica in such a poignant and beautiful way
It breaks my heart that she told her partner that she wanted him by her side at the gala as well as choosing to play WITH him on stage instead of having him kicked out, it truly shows how she never saw their relationship as competitive or the need to be enemies
Its so interesting how he got the " upper hand" and sat in the seat in comfortable posiition but she had to stand up and play the jarp backwards. She was trying to instill that they are equals but their equity is not the same she has to prove herself more than he does. He is given opportunity where as she is meant to prove herself to everyone. I love this animation is beautifully done.
A few months ago my ex fiancé tried to kill me while I was attempting to nap in my home. I saw this a while ago and I still gasped when he pulled the gun out. The music was so beautiful too. The animation really did give further impact to the story.

Worst thing is that there is nothing on UA-cam about her, only a few videos in Spanish that don't have subtitles. Nor was there much info on Google. Thank you for making this amazing animation
Not including the sound of a gunshot only made this all the more impactful. It left it on an air of suspense. Yes, from the text at the end we know what happened, but we feel what happened in such a more somber way than if there had been the sound of the gunshot. Beautiful animation. Thank you.
Wow, you guys did a masterful job of making me uneasy the entire film; Edoard wasn't too overt, but when her friend left her alone with him my heart sank. I just knew that he wouldn't accept her success, and sure enough, he decided that his ego was more important than a woman's life. Heartbreaking; thank you for sharing a story I had never heard and celebrating a life cut tragically short
Sis played it backwards and still destroyed him easily!!! Wow!! Such talent of Magnifica. Thank you for shedding a light on the true story of Pacifica Zelaya. Truly a sad story. But one that we must remember. Instead of hating on one another's talents and hard work, appreciate them for their accomplishments. Embrace their art for the purity that is embodies. And for crying out loud, lets just love each other. Without hate. Without bitterness and envy or jealousy. Just pure love. The kind that seeks to protect our partners and not hurt them.

To see such a young star burn so bright and have to meet a tragic death and knowing that it happens so often is what hurt me when this short ended. Amazing job and wonderfully done! This film has an incredible atmosphere - I was weary of Edward from the beginning. At first I thought he was showing concern for her, maybe not wanting her to embarass herself or be mistreated by the audience, but I knew something was off when Magnifica was comforting him but he was still looking at her with so much anger. Rewatching it, I notice he doesn't actually show concern for her, he's worried about the reputation of the professor. It's clear that he's incredibly jealous and resentful of her, the only time he's smiles this whole film is when he's ruining her moment, and he's disgusted when his actions didn't cow her into submission. I also think about this in contrast to her friend; she's always reaching out to Magnifica, believing in her and asking if she's okay. When she leaves her alone with him, she looks almost hesitant before going. It really makes the audience uneasy. I'm not surprised it ended the way it did, vengeful men enacting violence on woman who they feel entitlement towards, but it IS tragic. Thank you for bringing more awareness to situations like these and to Pacifica's life.

My initial reaction was if only she went home with her friend, but I know that he was always going to harm her regardless and thats what’s so heartbreaking. This was a really well done animation especially the fly in the web as the spider closes in symbolism.
I’m glad I took the time out to watch the entire film in order to see the moral to its story. I learned quite a bit today with just reading the message at the end. Thank you for taking the time out to get that message across.
He wanted to make a fool of her but she made a fool of him instead proving her immense talent in the process. Jealousy is bitch. It's sad seeing a young lady's life wasted for nothing.
As soon as he exposed and pulled for his gun, I thought, "You wouldn't." But he did, and I'm wondering what made him so angry. Envious? They played together, but despite the beautiful music, they weren't in harmony; he was playing with her, yet he was not with her. They've long since passed, and while he tried to wipe her existence out of history, I can assure you where it counts; it hasn't been forgotten. May she rest in peace, and may he rest in pieces.

Merci beaucoup pour votre commentaire ! Nous sommes vraiment heureuses d'avoir pu ramener à la vie Pacifica Zelaya pendant quelques minutes, et de savoir que notre travail vous a plu ! Merci !!
The only time he looked happy was when he was upstaging her. He liked the fact that he was better than her. She was probably new to the country when they first met. Meaning he was more capable than her. He probably taught her about the country, the language, the customs. He liked having control of her. Being better than her. Having a beautiful pearl that wasn't more beautiful than him. But she grew. Was recognized for her talent. And was favored over him. And he couldn't accept that. So in his twisted mind she had to die. That was her punishment for being so magnificent.
In the end he never loved her truly but she hoped eben in her last minute that HE did she searched for live in his eyes than she didnt found it and his behaviour her looking at their fitting Rings she known he used her they couldnt habe a future to gether she Made this carrier for him for their future she had other things in mind marry settle peaceful Down habe children tha pla for their children and him and the owns people who lived there but he crushed stamped her dream
Stop I didn’t think this was based on a true story, the animation is absolutely beautiful and conveys the emotions of each character very well. I enjoy the see of Pacifica fiddling with her ring, it goes to show the amount of love and time they put into everything. I mean the color palette down to music, this was an absolutely wonderful animation.
Wow i did not expect this to be about femicide. But its amazing to see this topic so wonderfully presented. The Patriarchy doesnt like these kinds of stories. Very Brave!

Came down here to say the same. Couldn't have said it any better myself.
Even though the screen went dark I had to close my eyes. The text made my heart drop.
I feel like most people don’t realize that Pacifica is playing BACKWARDS during the duet! It really shows her talent!
Also where can I listen to this music by itself?
I think that may have been artistic license because the notes played don’t match up to the strings being plucked
Oh geez! I didn’t even notice that!
The comment just refers to where she is sitting...

It just goes to show that even decades later this violence against women is so ingrained now that it's become instinct for modern day women to fear being alone with a man (Especially one with a fragile ego)
Such a beautiful animation.

This problem concerns not only girls, but people in general, there were many deaths due to simple envy in something, especially in a career

Hello! Costarrican/Tica here! Thank you for the representation! We don't get many :,) The animation is beautiful! The sound effects wonderful and everything is just magnifico! ;) Thank you for spreading awareness and helping spread Pacifica's story
Hola, costarricense/tica aquí! Gracias por la representación! No tenemos mucha :,). La animación es hermosa! Los efectos de sonido y la música son maravillosos y todo es simplemente magnífico ;) Gracias por dar a conocer este tema y a esparcir la historia de Pacífica
Thank you dearly for your comment ! We're so happy we could bring Pacifica's memory back to life for a few minutes, raise awareness a little hopefully and that you've enjoyed it :)) thank you ! It means even more coming from a costarrican ! Muchas gracias !!
as a costa rican, as a latine, as someone afab, and as a lover and performer of music this touched me greatly. beautiful animation truly, what an important story to tell.
The reality of what this animation represents is truly depressing and horrible, but yet so beautifully represented. I hope that this short animation earns rewards that it truly deserves! All of the movements, expressions, small details, and even the colouring is purely gorgeous!
I haven't watched it and I know it's lovely

Whoever animated the hands playing the harp- damn.👏🏻
No puedo creer el final :( una lastima que este inspirado en una historia real, muy buen corto
Muchas gracias for your comment 🙏
We're very glad we could make Pacifica Zelaya known this way and that you've enjoyed it !
🌷🌎🌷 A hateful narcissist man,... destroyed her talent & beauty.... situation happened in 1907,.. I feel so helpless & brokenhearted just like this crime happened today in 2023.
🌷🌎🌷 We as women are treated like 3rd class citizens in this world,... & in some backwards-wack cultures, livestock has more worth than we do.
🌷🌎🌷 I’m happy to hear that hate crimes towards women “cold cases” like what I just finished watching is finally being resolved & dealt with right now,... Much thanks to the “ME TOO” association.

Omgsh, I can only imagine how much time was invested to accurately animate the harp playing shots.
It's so beautiful!
As a Costa Rican woman this story made me have a lot of mixed feelings. This is a masterpiece
Beautifully done. This really dignifies her story instead of dramatizing it. Rest in peace, Pacifica
This was incredibly beautiful - the animation, the art, the message, everything. Thank you so much for telling Pacifica’s story - I had never even heard of her until watching this. The creators of this really know how to capture our emotions. Rest in Peace Pacifica and every girl and woman who died from the same violence, and fantastic work to the creators.
It’s just not Pacifica, it’s talking about today. In Mexico the average is of 11 women a day, that are killed. I’m glad this was made, beautiful animation and also to raise awareness.

_"And yet, when women say they are afraid of men, the men ask why..."_
Men: Women are too emotional
*Also men*
i think this is the first short film animation i’ve seen from gobelins that was directly based on a true story, and i’ve seen probably almost a hundred by them. this was a beautiful representation of the true story. the animation style, the characters and their emotions as well as the animal during the harp scene was beautifully conducted. it left me wanting for more until the end part, because of its reality i thought that i don’t think i wanted anymore because it made it felt unreal if you know what i mean. i’d rather the story be false than true because the truth hurt. a lot.
edit: i remembered i watched that very short short inspired by walt disney and his “feud” with another female illustrator/animator (think her name was something along the lines of rose)
Thank you dearly for your comment ! We're so happy we could bring Pacifica's memory back to life for a few minutes , raise awareness a little hopefully and that you've enjoyed it :)) thank you ! (especially for taking the time to write such a sweet comment ! Thank you !!)
@@azelle97 oh wow i didn’t expect a response from anyone let alone one of the creators. it really is a beautiful yet tragic short so thank YOU! and no worries, you deserve all the praise
Gracias por contarnos su historia💕. Que desgracia que a mujeres tan talentosas, inteligentes y hermosas las hayan forzado a dejar de viv1r.
THATS why it’s dangerous to pamper men’s egos. They HAVE to be held accountable for their actions.
I am sad to say that I was not surprised that this story is based on real life events. This is such a common tragedy that I almost expected the ending. To see such a young star burn so bright and have to meet a tragic death and knowing that it happens so often is what hurt me when this short ended. Amazing job and wonderfully done! I'm glad it was to pay tribute to the girl who had suffered and to the many women who still suffer from this type of abuse and violence.
Man aswell not only Girls its than than people who are kind meet this Type of people who are the oppiside in search of true love fnding you soulmate for life they gec trapped into toxic unfitting possesive obseesive relationships
If you love truly though you protect not kill you let go of the other is unhappy with you you trust Talk with each other are there in bad times you are loyal truthful consider the others feelings before yours
Im actually costa rican i was born in alajuela it is sad that i never heard of her and the tremendous talent she had
This is what animation is for Adults. A visual spectacular, a story that is both beautiful as it is tragic and informative. However it also educates on what is not taught in schools and allows us to learn more about the world we live in. Thank you for this amazing short!
Thank you for bringing light to the talent and awe of Pacifica Zelaya. What a wonderful woman
Merci !!
He thought he owned her he didnt realized she loved him but he saw her as a enemy and was hurtful towards her she aspected love from him be her strength but he only dissapionted her till tue end dnd her death he killed her cowardly
She wanted a future with him marry children she worked her butt of for them for his family Name the rings she realized he dintvwabt that want her she saw no future thats why she left she let him go but he killed her to not leave him he missunderstood her he was the one rejecting her not she him she saw no future with him anymore he showed they couldnt fix what they had so she walked she behaved adult but he was like if i cant have her no one can no one is allowed to leave me he was a insecure Idiot who turned into a killer just because things dont went his way he thought she couer and obey him he failed at outbest her in music if he was that unhappy why not try solo carrier onna diffrent Country make a big Name pr a duet with her harmonazing not a Duell were to proof who outshine who she deserved to be and people see her Talent its not easy to Play the harp Back Wards and with feelings
She feeled the music and put emotions in her Play thats what i call Talent
He didnt liked the look in her eyes he deserved that look through she didnt deserved him let her Down lije that she shared with him she saw him as her equal not belos she did this for them saying i aspect you at my side he could have duet with her instead of try to ruin mock her on puplic ruin her Name and carrier
Ypu dont do that to one you lice you dont awell kill the one you live he was toxic
Jealousy is a hell of a drug
Wow. This is amazing storytelling. I don’t even have words. Just wow. Thank you for sharing her story. Now we know her. And what a cruel reality we live that this will always be human nature.
My jaw dropped at the ending. This is such a beautiful animation and tribute 👏 thank you to the creators and gobelins 🙇♀️
Thank you dearly for your comment ! We're so happy we could bring Pacifica's memory back to life for a few minutes , raise awareness a little hopefully and that you've enjoyed it :)) thank you !
Thank you for bringing Pacifica's story to light, I can't imagine how many other stories have been hidden.
The character design just from the thumbnail??? Omfgg I’m on the edge of my seat
He killed his next partner too.
What?!1? I'm from Costa Rica and I had no idea about this story! It made me so sad, and somehow the accent and character was so familiar. So beautiful yet tragic.
Im in love with this art style and color palette
This was absolutely incredible! The animation, the music, the message about domestic violence; what a gorgeous work!

Les détails dans la robe qui scintille sont vraiment magnifiques. Merci pour ce moment de pur plaisir, et pour le message impactant

Pretty much
In the end he never loved her truly but she hoped eben in her last minute that HE did she searched for live in his eyes than she didnt found it and his behaviour her looking at their fitting Rings she known he used her they couldnt habe a future to gether she Made this carrier for him for their future she had other things in mind marry settle peaceful Down habe children tha pla for their children and him and the owns people who lived there but he crushed stamped her dream
Thats why she walked away she was a fool fog her thinking he loves her she shouldnt have trusted him that much to meet him alone
He planned her downfall for the Debut in the puplic why he was having a gun through
He killed his second wife to ending up in jail and be deckared insane aswell to a asylm years later
I thought this was going to be about a couple going through a hard time and then making up. I was very shocked at what happened. Loved the animation
She did riddle with the ring since it Symboled their past love promises she gave up than she seen he didnt loved her anymore
Wow i did not expect this to be about femicide. But its amazing to see this topic so wonderfully presented. The Patriarchy doesnt like these kinds of stories. Very Brave!
Thank you dearly for your comment !! We're so glad we could bring Pacifica Zelaya's memory back and that you've enjoyed it !
This summarises all patriarchal violence in less than 7 minutes! Wonderful and heartbreaking work. Thank you.
God the small foreshadowing at 1:35 is amazing (as he pulls back his vest a little to get a cigarette you get a glimpse of his gun!!)
Thank you for your comment ! You're the first to have pointed that out :DD We hope you've enjoyed the movie !
@@azelle97 of course!! I really enjoyed the movie you guys made! The animation is stunning, and the pace and storytelling of this is animation is beautiful! I just love how you use small details to add to the scenes and what’s happening and the way the story of this strong woman was told! I really hope you and your fellow animators have a nice day! :D
I have no words, this is so beautiful and so well dane . I just love this ❤
Incredible piece of work. Thank you for creating this little masterpiece and for sharing Pacifica's story, which sadly, is the story of too many women and girls.
Thank you dearly for your comment ! We're so happy we could bring Pacifica's memory back to life for a few minutes and that you've enjoyed it :)) thank you !
