Well I can't speak for everyone with a wrx but however I have a bugeye with 205k miles on it. With 450hp and 1 rebuild engine with currently 40k miles zero issues ever since. If you build it right and a perfect tune it's a blast to drive.

bought myself a 2007 NA impreza (145k miles) with bad headgaskets, torn boots, and needed the whole timing belt, water kit, etc for around $2,000 even. Spent about 3,500 in maintenance and i've owned the car for a year now. She runs great and with the current market... having spent a little under 6k i am NOT disappointed with how practical the NA models are for daily use. For the non Subaru owners here. I bought a 2012 Impreza hatchback with only 30k miles on it, the engine is stock right now. People will say "oh yeah my Subaru has always been reliable" up until the moment you own that car and then that same person will tell you "oh I had this problem and that problem they're a lot of work really"
They all have some issues, for 2012s the exhaust rust off pretty quick, the stock exhaust sucks, get something new. I got a nameless performance delete had it chopped and welded in cause my flange was too far gone.
You will burn oil to some level make sure to check your oil. You're also prone to leaks and such. Window seals are awful. The dash will rattle and there will be a ton of sounds going on.
She's never broke down on me so far, she just likes to act funny from time to time.
Also maintenance is expensive, not bmw/Mercedes expensive but more than your average ford or Chevy bill.
They're great cars I love mine it handles really well, it's a fun car, I plan to continue mods for it as I daily it, and I'm keeping it until it dies for good. I would recommend these cars to anyone, but understand it will not all be sunshine and rainbows.

The headgasket leak was the most common on the ej25D, 251,252,253,254. Those engines came in the Impreza and non turbo foresters of the early 2000s (the ones that most people aren't modding). If you owned a sti, wrx, GT, XT (the ones you should be modding) that headgasket is steel and is a non issue. The headgasket should always be replaced with the steel one found in the turbo models (ej255 &257)

The reliability becomes an issue because people cheap out on parts and don’t realize that these cars REQUIRE a tune for basically everything you add to them other than a catback exhaust.
These cars, while finicky, can be reliable as long as the owner understands that they are going to have to spend money to make it reliable once they start adding power adders.
I cannot tell you the amount of people that I see posting stuff like “I added a blow off valve and I take and now the car stutters and some run good” then you ask if they converted to speed density or got a tune they are like “my buddy’s cousins friends nieces boyfriend who’s a mechanic said you don’t need a tune for those”.

In my 4 years of ownership I've never experienced any issue with my 2015 WRX (currently at 111k on the factory block and trans) Every time I've seen a engine blow up it's done by the owner abusing their car, treating it like dog shit. If you want a vechicle with ridiculous power, tq, strong engine, etc. I suggest a 2SS camaro, a 2018+ Coyote mustang, or some other car.
I for one don't care about the peak HP numbers and driving in a straight line. I want to experience a good driving experience through a canyon, a rolling curvy Valley, etc. Subaru delivers with that. 400HP is just fine for that experience.

CVT, TCV, VVT, infotainment with mind of its own, self-cracking windshield, poor suspension and brakes, PITA to work on (try replacing sparkplugs)... They use boxer engines and insist on liquid coolant which will never work. VW knew this decades ago. This is why they chose air cooling instead...and no risk of blown head gasket. Subarus need constant maintenance and upkeep.
If you change your engine and CVT oil every year it may last, but who wants to do that? Changing CVT oil is a pain, and many places don't do it right. Many older cars on the other hand will rack up hundreds of thousands of miles with minimal maintenance. I speak from personal experience.
I would never consider buying a Subaru...

Sti’s and WRX’s have never had head gasket problem’s. The older generations of regular Impreza’s are the ones with head gasket issues. Also there has never been an issue with oiling of pistons, don’t know where you came up with that none sense. The reason these cars blow up is because of people aka kids not understanding the MAF based ecu and the effects of bolting on down/Jpipe pipes and intakes without being tuned for. This almost always ends in disaster and ppl calling their Subaru a POS. There have been known issues with leaky valve cover gaskets, and cracked ringlands on certain Sti model years. But in almost every other case of one of these cars nuking, is because of the owner being ignorant.

The “head gasket” topic is and probably always will be a black eye among the brand. But, if one was to actually do the research as to the REAL root cause for head gasket failure, they would find that it is a direct result of younger generations that improperly upgrade, or build with a lunch money budget, onto the vehicle. This same generation also tend to beat the living crap out of their cars as if they’re part of a GTA mission. Lowering, tuning and deeper exhaust seems to be overlooked by giant turbo upgrades and ridiculous body kits.
So it is my opinion that blown head gaskets are not a result of poorly designed Subarus. It is a result of poor upgrades by youth.
I’m not being disrespectful to those who have taken the time to build their Subaru correctly. I’m just say’n!
I own a lightly modified H6 3.0 Outback and it is still going strong.

Fun fact! Back in the early 90s, Subaru was doin' a pretty buns job at marketing. Like, they didn't have much to differentiate themselves from other companies and were like... Just kinda there. Between the runaway success Subaru had with WRC and their subtle, yet noticeable marketing campaign towards the LGBT community *esPECIALLY with their wagons* caused Subaru to be the ONLY company that didn't lose market share during the recession in '08!

Another video talking about how unreliable they are even though they are reliable. People put low quality mods on and don't tune or do maintenance and lug/beat on the car, that's the reason they don't last. A stock ej257 can handle increased boost of about 30-35 psi. Head gaskets are a nonissue with boosted EJ engines. It is annoying that these myths are still around because people spread misinformation.

Head gaskets rarely go out on turbo models, do your preventative maintenance and get a proper tune for these cars, and drive them properly. These cars blowup because of stupid owners who do zero maintenance and don’t tune for stuff they throw on the car
