🎧 LISTEN TO THE ICEBERG: We have a lovely and immersive SPOTIFY playlist available with some personal favorites out of all these albums. If an album wasn’t available, I included a different track from the artist in question. Unless we’re at the last two entries because, no, we’re not doing that. 🏔️ ICEBERG INSPIRATIONS
This iceberg includes a fair number of personal picks, but it was inspired by some great posts. Especially this one / dark_music_iceberg and this one / disturbingdepressing_a... .
--------------------
NOTES
This video was previously released in two parts on this channel. This is a reupload compiling them together.
Gulaghh/Stalaggh and Hanatarash have been discussed at length in our previous videos, so we have opted to skip their albums for this round.
There are obviously thousands of black/death/gore metal albums which we could not fit in this list. We have opted to include some of the most noteworthy and seminal albums (limited to one album per artist) of each genre… we could make a new iceberg entirely based on darker music genres alone (though we’d like to leave this endeavor to real experts) , but this is meant to be introductory and broader in scope.
Jazz is underrepresented in this particular iceberg and we hope to dedicate a full video on some of the most peculiar releases in this genre in the future. Please suggest some picks to educate use below!

I used to keep Lightning Bolt tracks handy towards the end of house parties when I wanted everyone to go home
My old high school friend group loved Lightning Bolt and I am fairly certain they got played at least occasionally when we hung out, but I was lucky, I suppose.
LOL
Nowadays I crank Earthly Delights and a majority of Ride The Skies in my car so people don’t use me for my gas. It fuckin works man.
I do the same with Xiu Xiu
Could've used Nattens Madrigaal by Ulver for the same result.
You know you have a problem when you've heard at least half of the entries on the last few tiers and go, "Oh, those are grim. But I've heard worse." That said, it's very hard to get worse than Buyer's Market, let alone the possibly mythical last entry, which are kind of cheating. I did appreciate some of the deeper cuts, though; in particular, I am a huge :zoviet*france: fangirl, and Univers Zéro were a big inspiration to me as a young'un.
Just for fun, some records I didn't see here which I think would totally fit at various levels:

…OK, that was more than "a few." Sorry. >~>;
So much good music listed there imo
important to understand that icebergs arent ranking lists. its not least disturbing to most disturbing. its most well known to least well known. the further down the iceberg you go the more obscure the art is. so thats why the list is inconsistent in how disturbing it is.
Hot damn, I thought I was a disturbing music aficionado. Shows me, when I've recognized less than half a dozen albums off this list.
I will be nabbing this, thank you.
@@ianbeach8516 Well, that's a bit boring then lol.
@@aethereal9032 frankly i think its far more interesting than ranking lists, considering ranking lists are just personal opinion, nothing more. you learn nothing from a ranked list whereas ice bergs teach you about things you might not have heard of before, things most people might not have heard of before. if that doesnt interest you it doesnt have to, but theres a reason its popular.
I've subbed, absolutely great content.
Steve Albini is a weird one... He appears absolutely everywhere in the liner notes of everything, I mean, he's already involved in a few in these tiers. Honestly, he's like a spilled bag of glitter, years later when you thought you'd found it all, you'll find it in the least expected places...
He's great
I like how unassuming he is and then you realize how much crazy shit he did as an artist
Albini is the secret glue of the music world
Steve is amazing! I love him, his philosophy and his work! A huge influence for me!
This list has been a goldmine for cool new music for me. Thank you for making these.
I'm always looking for new, challenging music to listen to, excellent work going through and explaining the albums that were in the iceberg. Was very happy to see a lot of albums I've been listening to, I appreciate the amount of work and effort you had to put in to make it work, wishing nothing but the best!
I'm surprised this didn't have Suicide's self-titled album.
Regardless, I really liked this video. Looking forward to other future content.
You know, it's funny: The self-titled is probably the scarier album overall, but in between the mellower "pop" cuts, the sophomore album has "Harlem", which is completely unhinged. Personally, though, I'd go with either Half-Alive or 23 Minutes Over Brussels in the freaky Suicide releases sweepstakes.
The only actually "disturbing" song on there is frankie teardrop honestly the rest is all just pretty groovy synth punk
Just discover this channel.loving every bit, i meam beat. Love your voice. 👍🏼
Incredible video, kept my interest the entire time. Definitely subscribing to see more
Absolutely amazing I honestly thought this channel would have at least a million subs
These videos are awesome. Thank you
Haven’t finished the video yet, but with how much music is in here that I love I’ll definitely have to check out the stuff I’m less familiar or have never heard of.
One of my new favorite channels by far! ❤️
Thank you so much for supporting us!
THE BOMBERMAN HERO SOUNDTRACK? Ooooo I KNEW I was gonna love this channel.
Awesome video, and Bomberman Hero OST in the intro!
Love da vidsss 🤞🏽
Everywhere at the End of Time hit me so hard, especially with my grandparents stuffering with dementia
I really want to listen to it, I've listened to a few snippets from it, I just don't think I have the attention span to dedicate 6 or so hours to it
Glad to see Pork Soda getting attention in discussion of disturbing albums. The song Mr. Krinkle has such a lighthearted subject matter, but the song’s sound and the music video are so damn creepy. Bob is an example of track from the album that both sounds unsettling and has unsettling lyrics. Album has such a spooky vibe overall even with songs that don’t have disturbing lyrics (or lyrics at all).
Sets: * gives detailed description of the music theory *
Me, smiling: I like your funny words UA-cam lady!
Great video! The only issue I noticed is that you included Drug, Drug, Druggy on the list of songs from The Holy Bible, but that song is actually on the previous album Gold Against the Soul
Its an absolute travesty how you have only 1.5k subs. Your videos are incredibly well made, super diverse, well researched and its very clear you know your stuff. I've been getting my friends to watch your channel
the reason why is because she doesn't circlejerk over extremely popular music. most other music video essay channels just jerk off dylan or radiohead, and while i love both of them, sets is far better because her stuff is actually for music lovers
Having begotten’s hushwave on vinyl curtesy of Geometric Lullaby is really a treat. It sounds even more depressive. Nice video.
Great video 👍
Huge props for mentioning Shaking The Habitual, such a great album
Just got recommended this video. So far, so good.
Nice list, nice. Could have maybe included Suicides Debut album, Nick Drakes final album and the Residents Not Available.
>Longtime collaborator
Partner. Jhonn was Sleazy's partner.
Also, Nattramn wasn't in a mental hospital nor did he try and kill someone. That was his brother, which Transformalin was a concept album around.
Great video, really well written
AWESOME VIDEO ... I had look up for "Lightning Bolt". great band !
so thrilled to see crispin glover's album on here, it's one of my favorite things to ever happen to music
It will never, ever be boring that's for sure
Amazing video
this deserves more views
Machine Girl is the project name, wlfgirl is the album name.
Thank you for all these new albums to listen to, I love odd unsettling music.
Definitely gonna need to sub. would you be willing to link a picture of the iceberg so we can go through each album ourselves?
Cool video!!
these sure are fun to watch
I don't know, I think I would add Streetcleaner by Godflesh, it's just pure nihilism, bleakness and emptiness
FINALLY someone talks about attic abasement. One of my favourite projects ever. Swim through the dirt and dancing is depressing have been with me for almost 10 years now
HOW DO I KNOW THAT I'M ALIVE HOW DO I KNOW THAT IM ALIVE?!
4:42 YUH
GUILLOTINEEEEEEEEE
i think a good one is "absinthe" by Naked City. it was the album that inspired the soundtrack to silent hill, and the sound design is haunting!
i’m saying i love that album it’s actually one of my favorite ambient noise albums it needs to be well known!
Leng Tch'e is even harsher imo, it's a completely different genre tho
Loving all the industrial records and artists on this list, brought a smile to my face seeing Skinny Puppy, Neubaten, And coil on this list.
Apparently, all music is disturbing for her
Jar Of Flies & The Downward Spiral are great albums by great musicians.
Gotta love when one of your fav albums is on this list 😅
But kinda surprised nothing from Sopor Aeturnus and the Ensemble of Shadows isn't on the iceberg. A lot of their music (from the atmosphere, composition, and lyrical/stylistic themes) is absolutely dark and heart wrenching. I'd like to know your opinion.
Nice video
Me and the gang playing Buyer's Market at 2 am
Martin Bladh of death industrial titans IRM made an official "remix" album of Buyer's Market, transforming the samples into a dark ambient collage piece over which Bladh performs spoken word drawing from several of Sotos' essays on tabloid media's morbid fixation on the abuse and murder of children. It's apparently quite tastefully executed for what it is, albeit very disturbing and by no means a comfortable sit.
In the tub in the dark
this channel uploads banger videos exclusively
I thought maybe soundtracks for the blind might be on here it's really creepy and also volcano
Im so glad Mr. Bungle got featured its one of my favorite albums.
just started stage two and see both mars volta and godspeed you black emperor this list is gonna be lit
Finally someone ackowledging Puce Marry. While I would have chosen "The female Form" when it comes to disturbing albums but someone actually mentioning her is enough to make me happy.
Paranoia ❤️❤️
I love Marco's work.
Same here and better yet I've only just discovered his stuff through his connection with Maurizio Bianchi.
Syd Barret didn't have a nervous breakdown and left the band. Actually he was getting addicted to drugs which then resulted in him becoming a schizophrenic and the band were forced to kick him out if they wanted to continue
'The Taller You Are The Shorter You Get' by My Dad Is Dead is highly recommended for sad people and 'Ratfucker' by Armand Schobroeck Steals is a must for all psychopaths. He's a nice guy too. He owns a guiar store in NY State and i liked the album so much i called him and he sent me three more. One was a double concept album about the ten years he spent in prison for armed robbery.
I feel like The Modern Dance by Pere Ubu should be here somewhere
alot of these are my all time favorites 😭
6:53 Jar of flies is not disturbing at all! It is one of the most peaceful AIC albums!
I'd say tripod is their most disturbing album, while jar of flies is their saddest
A nice addition imo would be The Stars are so Big… & Iron Lung EP by Pram. Some of the deeply saddest music I’ve found recently.
Nah, you gotta put “Helium” on there. Similar lyrical themes to “The Stars Are So Big…”, but it replaces the lovely post-rock sound that album had with… well, I’m not quite sure *how* to properly describe “Helium’s” disturbingly whimsical sound.
Some of my favourite albums, many of these are also beautiful (Coil, Lustmord, Puce Mary, Nico). I don't really have much time for the metal related material myself (with exception of Sunn o))) ) but the arty farty stuff here is great- Scott Walker, Atrax Morgue, This Heat, Throbbing Gristle, Whitehouse, Einstürzende Neubauten, Nurse With Wound, Di6 etc🎉🥳
23:16 my dad used to be in electric wizard from 2012-14, they still had a lot of drug addiction and they still do
Your dad's a legend!
I'm a simple man, you use Bomberman Hero samples in your video, I like and comment xP
The cure’s pornography is such a masterpiece along with everything else they do I love it so much
Lightning Bolt is probably my all time favourite rock band their stuff just like hits me so good
MERZBOW is signed on Relapse Records, not Release Entertainment. It's the same label of Dying Fetus, Red Fang and early Mastodon.
And Death!
here's a depressed drinking game for you take a shot every time you hear the word nihilism in this video
I almost have every Lightning Bolt album on vinyl - they’re one of the best
should’ve added absinthe by naked city fr really good noise ambient album
Damn, this video was incredible.
The ghostbin link of the tracklist is down/broken. Can it be reupped somewhere else?
Honourable mention for this list, despite it being so old: Wormphlgemg's Tomb of The Ancient King, if yk yk, if not ... well let's just say the members were very, very intimate with their music, body included.
Geometric Lullaby is such a great label!! Begotten is some of the best vaporwave
the tracklist isnt available anymore, does anybody know the song at 0:56?
You'd have so much fun with the Nicole Dollanganger and Ethel Cain discographies (both artists still active, Ethel just debuted but she's PHENOMENAL) - just saying. Preacher's daughter is probably one of my favourite releases this year.
Ptolemena is such an insane song by Ethel. And though I will consider both acquired tastes, they are both so good.
I literally only listened to blackstar once, it's incredible but i remember it made me really sad
This Heat's Deceit definitely should be here (if it is not😅)
Dammit, I had already done the Nymphomatriarch thing but I didn't think it was viable.
Venereology is Merzbow’s 109th record (if I counted correctly)
the character pink wasnt based on syd barrett, piper at the gates of dawn was. (imo) pink is based on waters himself. the concept of the album is isolation and alienation. pink doesnt like to feel like a vulnerable child so he builds a wall around his heart and surrounds himself with people that dont really know him. (again, in my opinion..i think the albums concept is really based on our perception of it). another way to put it is that its the same thing when you see the little girls posting "ive been thru so much you dont even know so thats why im a bitch" all over social edia. "my hearts been broken too many times im so strong". I think that towards the end of the album, when pink is reflecting on himself, thats when he decides to "tear down the wall". when he does so, hes just a lonely little boy that misses his dad. thats why i feel like pink is based on waters. I dunno though.. this is just my interpretation of it, I dont know if any of this makes sense but I will absolutely agree that its one of the best albums ever written. that and nine inch nails the fragile. shout out to pork soda too, I love les claypool lol seeing roger waters perform the wall in 2016 was one of the best shows ive ever been to.
good video, interesting perspective. well done. I will subscribe. :) take care
yes i agree a lot of the songs revolve around waters' life in particular iirc. like the scrapped track about his dad
Machine girl is an album i can vibe with when im working on drawings
being surprised that black metal albums appear so far down on this list reaaaally makes me wanna reevaluate my music taste lol
like Make A Change being close to the last entry is understandable if you're like a normal human being but that albums pretty highly regarded in terms of DSBM
Imo Damaar's Triumph Through Spears of Sacrilege rivals the last one of these albums. Unlike Revenge, due to Damaar's situation, the hatred and anger they handle are real and harsh
@@andreaseverin1346what do you mean, their situation?
late, and slightly biased because im a fan of both of these bands
dystopia's first album *human = garbage* (important and amazing album) is an honorable mention, using haunting and distubing samples in bold and raw straight to the point lyrics full of self loathing, and anger towards real world problems that are still prevalent in todays world
also rudimentary peni's discography is pretty disturbing throughout, but *pope adrian 37th psychiatric* is by far the most difficult listen and makes it that much more intriguing knowing it was written while the singer was involuntarily institutionalized and was having delusions and an episode??
definitely a dark band thats worth a listen, very punk inspired, distrust for the system, inspired albums that progressed into an obsession of death, hp lovecraft, that pointless of humanity, and all worth listens
happy to see Farrah Abraham`s album on here cause that thing is still one of the craziest albums i ever heard
Confusion is Sex should've been in the second tier IMO. Other than that great list!
Yeah this going to blow up
nice
When your favorite Albums appear in every Tier lol
lmao at the start theres that creepy intro and then it just cuts to mc ride
Too bad you didn't make a complete time stamp list of all the albums and artist covered.
Just so I can have the ability to write some of them down because I have no idea how to spell half of the artist names.
Would love to check them out.
There's a track list and Spotify playlist in the description :)
I love your pink floyd pfp!
EXCUSE ME HOW IS LIGHTNING BOLT DISTURBING ??? THEY'RE LIKE THE HAPPIEST HIGH ENERGY BAND EVER
Surprised to not see Obey by Brainbombs
given how much black metal is covered in this video, i'm surprised there was zero mention of dawn of the black hearts...
24:31 where is this footage from?
Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante has two disturbing albums from the 90s, when he was out of the band due to issues with addiction and depression. Niandra DeLes from 1994 and Smile From The Streets You Hold from 1997 are both recorded by him entirely in his home, the first on decent recording equipment but the second mostly on cheap boomboxes. On both albums you can hear how much of a horrible place he was in at the time, from the lyrics and his literally degrading voice. By the second album he was basically weeks away from death but his friends helped him get into rehab and a year later he rejoined the Chili Peppers and has since been in a much better place. But both of those albums (the second one not even on streaming or sold physically anymore) are a disturbing view into a very real downward spiral, along with the interviews and “Stuff” documentary from that time.
Surprised to see Darkthrone but neither Gnaw Their Tongues nor Mayhem on here honestly
You the greatest, you a visionary, remember me when you get to the top. ♥️♥️
The ghostbin link doesn't work :(
Trout Mask Replica goes hard
While I agree with too dark park... I must say, that album is pretty compared to the next album, last rights.
I would like to let you know about
Season of da Siccness: The Resurrection - Brotha Lynch Hung
A very disturbing and creepy horrorcore album from the 90s
Yes! That probably takes the cake over any of these others. I just started watching and was hoping it would be mentioned but I guess not. It's one of my favorite albums but it's absolutely brutal AF! If you know you know 💯
The weirdest band that give me shivers is a noise band called Zoul. All their albums could fit in this video
