It'll grow in ridership. BART to SFO had low ridership at first and now the SFO station has about 2.3 million riders yearly. People are gonna start realizing it's cheaper and quicker to take BART than to drive, it just takes 2-3 years.
The reason for SFO's low ridership was that the extension was built with very bad timing. BART should have put that money towards the San Jose extension first and then built the SFO extension.
Public transit's job is not to make money, it's to serve people. I have no issue with taxpayer money having to subsidize public transit. What I DO have an issue with is a ridiculously expensive technology that could've been built more cheaply.
If they'd just used that same cable and winch motor for aerial gondolas it would have been done in a fraction of the time for 1/10 of the cost, plus it could serve the hotels and shopping center it passes. And there's never any wait time. Also, $6 for this when the airport BART bus used to do it for $2 is a crime.
