Relax. The important thing is BART is being proactive to fix fare evasion. Many other cities are not. You'll get it eventually. LA Metro needs to use these same tall gates. They are the best design I've seen to combat fare evasion. Well done SF.

More police and bart employees in the stations and trains. Those demanding to defund the police probably never rode BART or other types of public transportation.
What I notice some people are doing is one person uses their Clipper card to tag in and open the new gate and then hold the gate open to let 10 people run through. I saw this recently at the Civic Center station with the new gates and about 30 seconds after the fare evaders ran through, two BART police officers came and I asked one if they saw the fare evasion to which he replied "Oh no...we were on break..." C'est la vie. I think you can crawl under the gates if you really tried but it's quite a squeeze though not impossible. I'm just glad it makes everything more difficult.
Did they raise the fence at that station? I used to see them hopping the fence on the sides more than the gates themselves. This would be useless if they didn't raise those as well.
Well, maybe with more people paying, BART can institute cheaper fares. They can move to a Capped fare system like LA Metro did last year. On LA Metro you pay no more than $5 per day or $18 per week. Rides are $1.75 one-way with a free 2 hour transfer window. Students can ride for free, low income people can get 20 free rides per month and seniors 62+ get about a 50% discount. @@mrxman581 Yeah, BART fares are ridiculous. That was one of my biggest complaints about living in the Bay Area--every time I wanted to go to the city (SF) for an event or a night out, it would cost me at least $15-20 just for the round-trip transportation. I realize it's cheaper than driving, but that seems awfully high, especially for people who are really counting their pennies.

It will be much more difficult with these gates. BART can also adjust the timing of the gates closing allowing for less time for people to piggyback. BART should do a public promo asking paying riders to wait half a second to make sure the gate closes behind them.

Yep, more fare evasion overall to boost the revenue and lower the crime and harassment of law abiding passengers and then lower the fares overall like in half.
