    I recall a DV article probably decades ago where he made 470 with a 355 and Vortec heads. If memory serves (I’m old), he used a 236° cam with 108 LSA, just a bit shorter than yours. Very impressive results regardless! Thanks!

    I'm impressed that 11 to 1 CR played nice with less than 100 octane. I've always heard no more than 10-10.5 to 1 on CR with iron heads - for pump gas/street-driven engines.

      @cuttersperformance  4 місяці тому +7

      Ive done 11:1 before with vortecs but was worried with the dyno load it might detonate. We tuned it up with VP additive mix, but it actually made the best power on 94 octane at 35 deg. I wish I had brought more of the VP mix as it would have probably have taken more timing. Maybe get abit more out of it with few more degrees and a tapered combo spacer on higher octane

I am currently building a 327 with 6.125 rods, and 350(6'" rod) pistons, gonna use one of those summit 4/7 cams you used but maybe a little smaller, looking for 425hp in an 86 IROC.

I would guess they wouldnhave snaller chambers from the beginning and mill diwn wven smaller. Even if they didn't offer more peak I would guess there would be a lot more low -mid range TQ. Bigger valves only work if ported. I typically prefer 1.94/1.6 with porting. As far as lift goes, Ive never seen a SBC lose power with more lift. So some head porting and a 1.6 rocker arm would be a noticeable improvement

    How do you think the power curve would be affected by having a dual plane high rise in comparison

    Wow i was surprised at the hp mark i used to race circle track in a stock head flat top non stroker motor class and a few guys might have been close to those numbers on hp. Great build

    This is the kind of stuff that makes me want to completely abandon building my 2.3 Turbo or even a 289/302 for my 72 Pinto. I grew up with my dads diet of Chevy powered and Chevy V8 swapped cars (other cars and engines too).
    I was going to do my best of keeping a Ford in Ford, but this validates the tried and true facts of building power with a Chevrolet.
    I guess my Pinto is going to match my late uncles. Chevy in a Ford it is…I’m going to catch hell, but I want to buy, build, drive, blow up, buy, build and drive. All without the costs of trying to make HP with the blue oval.

      I'm a bowtie guy but I built a 289 Pinto in 1981 and I would stay with a sbf, I was never beat street racing in that car, they weigh nothing, you could get some pretty good power out of a 302, if you want crazy put a 351 Cleveland in it

      My late uncle went down that road when my dad and him were building his 71 Pinto and my dad’s 64 VW bodied/Austin Healy chassis car.
      The Pinto had the 302/C4 combo and when I was about 10 years old he stuck a 383/TH350 in it. Like my dad told me then. Dollar for dollar and cubic inch for cubic inch you can buy, find, swap and run into Chevy parts cheaper and more choices available than a Ford - including making horsepower.
      That being said… I won’t be tempted and refuse to LS swap it. My dad has enough old dress up parts from the 60’s/70’s/80’s to make a SBC look period correct.

    That’s a lot of flow for any sbc cylinder head. That is a lot more than any stock port vortec head will flow, it took a lot of porting to get those numbers.
    Be nice to see flow charts at specific lift numbers to compare to other cylinder heads flow.
    And compression does a lot.
    Fuel injection and computer control makes a really big difference over carburetors and non computer controlled ignitions when it comes to high compression and lower octane fuel.
    I would like to see 9.5:1 and run it on pump 93 and see what it does.
    All we have at the pump here in Texas is 93, and two stations that have E85. And it’s pump e85, not the good, accurate E85 you buy in barrels like race fuel.

      Heads were ported and full flow numbers in the next video. The dingle ball 2.0 is a 10:1 355 with less compression should be a interesting comparison

      I ran 10.5:1 on my iron head Vortec 383 in my G20 van on Texas 91 or 93 for years. My 11:1 aluminum head 383 in my Express runs on the same fuel.

    thank you for the video, would love all the specs, i am looking at a real budget build for a little s10, starting with a 79 350 block.. if you can share the list and part numbers and which carb you feel worked best, also can you tell me any thing about the factory aluminum chevy vortec heads, i can get a set, but i read something about reverse cooling.. not sure what that really means thanks in advance for all the help

    Awesome results there Pat! Could you please explain how did you port the vortecs to improve the flow? Is it with the stock valves?

  • @jordananthony9652

    That’s bad ass for a set of vortecs ! I have a set my self but I would love to see it live when those numbers were made like most would do , also how long do you think the heads would live with out cracking with what’s been done I ask this because I’ve been thinking of have larger valves installed

    • @cuttersperformance
      @cuttersperformance  4 місяці тому +1

      I usually just go larger on the exhaust valve (1.6) takes alot of porting to utilize the 2.02

    Refreshing a ZZ4 short block that i picked up. Vortec heads or the aluminum Chinese heads?? Going in a boat and having a hard time finding good comparison info.

    • @cuttersperformance
      @cuttersperformance  4 місяці тому

      The vortecs are good value if you can find good castings for cheap. If you have to buy new, then the china heads are typically a better option. I ordered a set of NKB eBay heads to try on an upcoming build for more comparisons

    Another quality SBC shows that the old shool block is still dishing out reliability and numbers would rather have this than an ugly LS motor
