    Just subbed I stumbled onto your channel Cool content! I love the now underdog SBC...., I have a 350 I've had since mid 90s it's been in different configurations and I've tried a bunch of cams in it from old crane fireball II to comp magnum 292 and the current camshaft in it is the absolute best overall "mild street" sbc cam I've ever tried... I recommend this to anyone that has a vehicle with a SBC that wants a great broad powerband and sweet lumpy idle with no vacuum issues... It's a Howard's flat tappet (112031-08). It's straight pattern.480" lift 231° duration @ .050, 285° advertised duration, 108 lsa. Howard's recommends it "for heavy vehicles", it Says it 2800-6400 rpm range but that's definitely conservative it's way broader than that, I have it in a 9:1 355 with ported and polished 2.02/1.60 GM 993 heads I bought from arrowhead in 90s and a 70s Eddy original Torker open plenum intake with 2" spacer, headers to dual 3" exhaust and it still pulls strong off idle with 26" tall tires 3:08 gears in a 4000lb truck! The powerband is strong all the way up to 6000. I had a 2500 stall converter in a built 700r4 but it wasnt necessary I had to put my original 700 trans back in with stock v6 converter and it drove fine, I can mash the throttle off idle and light the tires up (with a built 800cfm Q-jet and now a cheapo 600 Edelbrock).. Power brakes work fine and with a 108lsa the idle is pretty nasty sounding, people constantly come up grinning complimenting the sound when it's potato potatoing away at the gas pumps. I can not see anyone being disappointed with this camshaft if they are building a mild to moderate street smallblock. Another good cam I ran was a lunati bracket master II 292 that's a good overall cam, the comp 292 magnum was way to much duration for a daily imo, Crane Saturday night special cam was a dud for the street it had good Midrange for off corner torque but mehh low and top end, had 106lsa so has cool nasty idle but sucked on street overall. But that "max torque" Howard's cam is a home run plus it's Howard's so it's a quality American made product and with .480 lift it's compatible with most mild setups....and there only $150! you really should try it out in a build. There's a couple of video on my channel you can hear the sound.

      @@jimkillen1065 combustion chamber design spark location and port velocity has come a long way since then, awesome isn't it! i love a good 292 cam, being a solid , it really packed the cylinders with superheated air, thats where it got so much power, i cannot imagine how snappy that engine must have been when it got into power band. Me and my friend marcus we had an electric blue 67 cali special mustang with narrow slicks on it in high schooL it had the solid 292 cam in a 302 long rod made from a 289 hi po, it was a real fender shaker, made crazy torque , it had high compression, we used a restrictive intake to keep so much cylinder packing down. people would say "why don't you use just a smaller cam" we were like, well it feels amazing, and our compression was too high to use a smaller cam we would have detonated for sure, and there were performer rpm package 350's that would beat us, we were like 'dang' they got power. Well it ran footin the brake 13 flat consistently with stock mildly massaged heads in a hi po 289 long rods and forged pistons. the car was all metal, like no interior metal, it had a factory like main hoop, we got as far as having the seats reupholstered with errors, and metallic electric dark blue pearl paint with a few runs or errors, for 4+ grand. Hey we try not to argue with the local stoner shops if you know what i mean, hahahahahhah. that was fun stuff right there. the car was a dog on the street, and before we had a good torque converter we tried to drive to and from school about a mile away, i could run there faster, we were stuck at lights, and the gas gauge is going down, the car is shuttering, and pulling through the brakes, we tore up a 2 whole set of rotors and burned up countless gallons of gas, we barely had low paying jobs part time on hardship allowance. Well it was really fun messing with the first car. The fact it was a california special blows my mind to this day. When i found out by running all the numbers and seeing the parts on the car, we had to tell big brother whom owned it originally, well they weren't realizing still. Now a california special is worth many thousands of dollars restored. At one time i had 6 mustang and gen 1 camaro body shells stacked 2 together in my parents back yard, and they were just like, " . . . this has to go" had a yamaha motorcycle project didn't run well or fast , and a gorilla mini bike, and my very first car i bought for 300 dollars in new mexico it was a 1972 skylark with a high compression 350 2bbl that i added a 4bbl intake and headers off a 1970 400 or 455 that i could not afford from the person. Th400. it had a blue racer camshaft in it. made all the torque and revved out to 5500 rpm

      @@jimkillen1065 when I had that comp 292 it was in a 4wd granny tranny lifted square body and being young big cam rough idle how go wrong it was a bad application, compression was 9:1 really not high enough for optimal results either but it was totally dead below 2500 then as soon as it hit 2500 it woke up with the fury like a light switch! I could blister 2 35" bfg at's sideways up the road but what a turd on low end torque. Young and dumb before I knew how bad over cammed was, I bought a crane solid dz302 offroad blueprint cam years ago but when I see the card saying the power range started at 4500! It was like only .450 lift and crazy duration, I see that and was like naaa, i sold it and the guy put it in a warmed over 355 in a 1980 Camaro and it actually ripped sounded evil!

      Yea I was a kid back then and I wanted more hp . I had a 68 Camaro at that time also that I had built a 302 and it was a 4 speed car . So I liked high rpm hp ..The reason I called Comp cam and I told them I tired of the engine laying over from the small hydraulic cam I dont remember exactly 268 or what. I had over 10 to one compression. Not a great idea on cast iron heads at that time . I had a 2500 stall convertor in the 80 Camaro and 3.42 gears . The comp 292 would pull 6500 first and second and 6200 high gear as I did it many time when it was cool and with the meth water injection. Headers recuved HEI ect . I twisted the input shaft once on the transmission. I hated the automatic but it what I ordered for the x wife back then .

Add a 100 shot of nitrous for the track even with the right vehicle setup and in my opinion it would be an impressive budget build with even today's performance standards. Comment and then a couple of questions: Think about dynamic compression for a moment. As far as I'm aware, roughly 8.25 to 1 (dynamic) is about the max compression with 91 octane. I'm curious about 87 octane. What do you think that the max dynamic compression ratio that you can run with 87 octane pump gas? 8.0 to 1? And... if I ran around 8.10 to 8.25 to 1, could I simply take a couple or 3 degrees of total timing out of my motor (yes, I realize that it will decrease my hp and torque) and run 87 with zero issues? I've got a 355 that supposedly makes very similar power naturally aspirated.
    Trick flow 175cc heads. 245/195cfm@.600". The cam is a Comp xfi252hr. 252⁰/264⁰ advertised. 202⁰212⁰@.050". .550"/.546". It's a torque monster. I've got a performer air-gap intake (non rpm), and 1 ⅝" long tubes on it. Throttle response is incredible. The small intake ports help keep velocity high and part throttle driveability is great.
    Comp cams camquest software estimated 406hp@5500 and 463lb/ft@3000. Does this sound accurate or even plausible to you? I've heard that my torque number sounds very optimistic.
    I've added about 9.5psi of boost so it's a real monster in my old pickup now.

      I had the low end covered with the small cam so u wanted a little more top end with the rising boost curve of the supercharger. I think it makes peak torque at 4,500 now.. and peak hp at 6500. I think it's making around 625hp.
      The supercharger claims to be capable of 775hp.
      I bumped my compression with the tiny 56cc chambers. Maybe that's why the software power estimates seem high.

    Those Iron Eagles have a great .400 lift flow, shittty .500 flow. According to your flow chart it shows flow is getting worse after .500 and at .510 your into excessive valve spring parasitic loss range. Id choose a .485-500 lift cam, no more

    • @cuttersperformance
      @cuttersperformance  11 місяців тому

      You gotta remember the valve only sees peak lift once in the duration of the lift. A head that flow peak at say .500 lift will almost always benefit from a cam that goes to say .550+. No engine that I've ever tried swapping a high ratio rocker arm has lost power on the dyno with more lift. Some engines gain more than others depending on how undersized the cam is, but I've never lost power from more lift (1.5 rocker to 1.6 rocker). Hes a extreme example but we have a super stock SBC race engine, the head peak flow at .750-800 lift (400 cfm). The engine was down over 150hp with a 780 lift cam vs a .950 lift cam.
